Remembering to Celebrate Our Successes

In the lives of ambitious and creative people, the view is often forward. The view, in fact, is often tunnel-visioned in the sense of the…

My favourite books— what I’ve read in 2019

Reading has to be my favourite thing to do. I read on the streetcar, I read when I’m waiting for people who are late for meetings, and I read at home in the evenings.

Needless to say I’ve read some incredible books this year. I thought it would be cool to share some of my favourites. These books aren’t necessarily books that came out this year, just books I’ve read over the past 12 months.

A list of my favourite books

The Water Cure by Sophia Mackintosh

Milkman by Anna Burns

The Book of Night Women by Marlon James

That Time I Loved You by Carrianne Leung

Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot

Have you read any of these? What are some of your favourites books?

CRY

MORE FROM CRY

Have you read my Thoughts of a Fractured Soul? It’s my first novel about a teenager whose life changes when he becomes a father. The story is an emotional depiction of the battle he faces between his ambitions and the real-life responsibility of being a parent.

My favourite books— what I’ve read in 2019 was originally published in C.R.Y on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

What’s the best thing you’ve done for yourself this year?

I know everyone’s coming up with these book lists, but what’s the most important thing you’ve done for yourself this year?

For me, it’s taking a fiction writing course. It helped elevate my novel writing to another level. I’m a much better writer right now and I’m so grateful for taking that opportunity.

But what about you? Doesn’t have to be just one thing. What did you do for yourself this year that’s improved your life in some way?

CRY

MORE FROM CRY

Have you read my novel Thoughts of a Fractured Soul? If you haven’t, here’s a short description:

Corey is reflecting on his life as a teenager who has just had his first child. He relives his story through a series of fragmented memories, pieces of sporadic thought capturing moments of his life as he tries to care for his family. But Corey is failing, and as he continues to struggle he realizes how easily the world can fracture his ambitions and force him to settle for a life of mediocrity. Thoughts of a Fractured Soul pushes the reader to piece together these fragments themselves, and decide on what part of Corey’s conflicting tale can be trusted.

What’s the best thing you’ve done for yourself this year? was originally published in C.R.Y on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Ashamed of my ambition

Someone asked me about my biggest fear. I already knew the answer. I knew it since I was a young boy dreaming of these moments.

More writers need to use Artery

Do you know about Artery? It’s this resource that allows you to host small gatherings in people’s living rooms (and other more intimate type venues). Musicians, artists, chefs and even yoga trainers are taking advantage of this platform.

Writers and authors should jump on this, too. It’s a good way to gather small groups to test out some excerpts from a project you’re working on. It’s low pressure because you don’t need too much people. And if you’re still worried about hosting yourself, partner up with another Artery host to give your audience an even better show.

Learn more about Artery.
