Mentor Me: GA=T+E—Capture the Purse Duty
‘Tis the season for shopping and extra crowds at all your local department stores and malls. This holiday season, pay special attention to all the guys by the ladies’ fitting rooms.
As I wrote in Mentor Me: “I like to watch the guys standing by the ladies’ fitting rooms. You know the guys I am talking about, the guys on ‘Purse Duty’—the ones holding the purse for their girlfriend or spouse while she is in the fitting room trying on clothes. It is very funny that no man seems to really know what to do with the purse, or how they should hold it.
They hold it like it is a bomb waiting to go off, or maybe like it is a skunk and they are trying not to get sprayed, practically holding their noses. They typically hold the purse lightly, by their thumb and index finger, or lightly with all fingers, down at their side, almost as if they think they can hide it, or no one will see.
If you are a man, standing with the other men on ‘Purse Duty,’ you look knowingly at each other and crack a smile…as if to say, ‘Yes…I understand.’ You can see the men standing there communicating with each other knowingly, all with nonverbal communication.
You can also spot the ‘new guy’—the one smiling from ear to ear. He is in a new relationship and is possibly experiencing his first ‘Purse Duty.’
Interestingly, you never hear a man begging, ‘Please, please, please, can I hold your purse?’ Usually, when a man is handed the purse, you can see their nonverbal eye-roll and almost hear them sigh, as they surrender to the fact they are not getting out of ‘Purse Duty.’
There is so much nonverbal communication going on there, man to man, and significant other to significant other. This is just one example of a situation where you can read other people’s emotions and almost hear their thoughts.”

As we know, most guys will not want to be seen (let alone forever memorialized with photos) holding a purse.

Mentor Me: GA=T+E—Mentor Me Video Trailer
So how do you make a book trailer video and make it different than other existing book trailer videos? How do you make your video different than all the other book trailer videos in your genre (in this case any other, business, success, achievement, self improvement, and self help book)?
That was my dilemma when I thought about how to make the book video trailer for Mentor Me. How do you stay true to your message, gear your book trailer video to the same audience who are the typical readers for your book, capture people’s attention, and make it memorable?
Those were the questions I asked myself before I blocked off, wrote down, and visualized what I wanted to create for the Mentor Me book video trailer.
Make it Memorable and Audience Specific
Let’s take these questions one at a time starting with making it memorable. Have you seen other book trailer videos? My overall thought when I watch these videos is boring! Most of them lose my attention immediately or put me to sleep. I did not want the book trailer video for Mentor Me to be like those other videos as Mentor Me is not like other books in its genre (business, success, achievement, self improvement, and self help books).
Furthermore, it has to be audience specific. When I wrote Mentor Me, I had a laser targeted audience in mind: Oprah Winfrey’s audience. Oprah Winfrey is someone I personally admire (which is in the book and also my blog). You will find, the vast majority of self help book buyers are female. Why? Probably because us men do not like to ask for directions. Am I right?
So women (more often than men) are apt to look for advice on topics like success, business, achievement, self improvement, and self help.
Oprah Winfrey’s audience is a perfect microcosm of this. The demographics of Oprah Winfrey’s audience; the bulk of her audience is female age 25 to 50. This is the demographic I had in mind when I wrote Mentor Me (although I am very pleased to hear from high school students as young as 16 and men in their 60′s, they have also gained a great deal of insight and enjoyed reading Mentor Me).
You Have a Short Time to Capture Someone’s Attention Online
I have seen studies that say you have up to 20 seconds or up to 30 seconds to capture someone’s attention. Either way: people online have a very short attention span—you have to grab their attention quickly.
You will see in the video, after the initial quiet, sweet, soft music that begins the trailer—this changes quickly. At about 13 seconds (less than 20 seconds to capture someone’s attention—I erred on the side of being extra conservative to not put people to sleep), complete chaos breaks loose in sight and sound. If you will also notice, there is a predominate sound which is also audience specific.
Capture Emotions And Tie Positive Emotions to taking action
Along with having sights and sounds to capture the target audience’s attention, videos give you the ability to use music and visual means to capture people’s emotions. As I say in Mentor Me, “Life Happens.”
There is a lot that gets in the way of our achievement of success or self improvement. I incorporated this and other quotes from Mentor Me in the video.
I also wanted to give the message of hope, motivation, and inspiration that is a part of the tone of Mentor Me. You will see, music, words, and photos combine to convey this same message as is written throughout the book.
In the end, the video ties the emotions of having success, happiness, and achievement to taking action, just like Mentor Me is all about taking action. As it is not a typical success, business, achievement, self improvement, self help book, so the video is not a typical book video trailer.
In marketing, they name this a call to action (asking your audience to take an immediate action, such as going to www.mentormegate.com, buying, and reading Mentor Me).
