Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hi all! First, let me just say thanks so much for having me on today. I love connecting with readers. That said, I hate talking about myself, so…official bio time!

Tina Moss is an award-winning author of urban fantasy, paranormal romance, romantic suspense, and New Adult novels.  She lives in NYC with a supportive husband and alpha corgi, though both males hog the bed and refuse to share the covers. When not writing, she enjoys reading, watching cheesy horror flicks, traveling, and karate. As a 5’1″ Shotokan black belt, she firmly believes that fierce things come in small packages.

What, in your opinion, makes a good story?

Dynamic characters! I can forgive a shoddy plot or subpar writing, but I cannot read a story with dull characters. I want to get inside a character’s head and connect with the hero or heroine. I also love well written villains or anti-heroes; the ones you love to hate. I want to go on the journey with these characters not simply to be told about it. So, authors, make me feel something, whether it’s happiness or sadness, love or hate, anger or excitement! As long as it’s not boredom, I’m in.

What authors do you look up to, and why?

My list will be long, but my first love is J.R.R. Tolkien. For a man that wrote this massive fantasy, he still made you connect with those hobbits. That’s a skill I aspire to possess. In today’s paranormal world I am a huge fan of Jeaniene Frost, Ilona Andrews, Gena Showalter, Patricia Briggs, Nalini Singh, and J. R. Ward just to name a few.

Do you keep tabs on the constant shifting tides of romance writing? If yes, how do you adjust your writing (if at all) to suit them?

Yes, in my alter ego side, running City Owl Press, I have to keep up-to-date on what’s hot and what’s not in the world of romance. What I’ve learned, however, is that while trends come and go, die hard readers always pick up the next book in their beloved genre. So, while some may say that XYZ genre is “dead”, it rarely is. On the writing side, I stick to my guns and try not to chase trends. When I have in the past, I ended up either hating what I was writing or missing the trend anyway, so it’s not worth it.

What is your greatest struggle in writing, and how do you overcome it?

I’ve had different struggles at different points in my career. When I first started, having the confidence to put myself out there was a big challenge. Nowadays, it’s finding enough hours in the day to sneak in writing time. I used to guard my writing time like a momma bear protecting her cub, but now other responsibilities have come into play. The key is to know that all writers struggle, so you’re not alone. Connecting with other writers helps get through those hard times.

Do you have a set writing schedule? What time of the day is most conducive to get your creative juices flowing?

I was very consistent when writing my last two books. I’d write every evening from around 7pm to 10/11pm, depending on the day. When I changed jobs, however, it became more difficult to keep that schedule, so I’ve had to make adjustments. Ultimately, it’s about finding out what works best for you.

Which one of your heroines is most like you personality wise, and how?

Jame from RED ALERT, book 2 in the Paranormal Crimes Division series, has a lot of spunk and probably is the most like me. She’s little, but fierce and determined to succeed. Her stubborn streak tends to get her into trouble as well, which is more like me than I’d care to admit. I hope you’ll consider reading about her when the book releases this winter. For all her faults, she’s a pretty cool character and I’d have no problem being compared to her.

Are you a creature of habit when it comes to your writing? Do you need to have your space set up a certain way? Have a certain drink?

Honestly, I can’t afford to be a creature of habit when it comes to writing. I have to sneak it in wherever and whenever I can. I think it’s great to try for consistency, but I would advise any aspiring writers not to get stuck on needing to have things a certain way. Stephen King used to write in a closet, and when he’d felt that he had “made it” he bought a large ostentatious desk and placed it in his study. He soon got rid of the desk, because he found that writing takes place “in the middle of things”, not away from them. I found that to be a foundational truth.

What’s in the works for you right now? When can we expect to see it released to the world?

So much! It’s frightening in the best possible way. Out now is A TOUCH OF DARKNESS the first in the Key series, co-authored with Yelena Casale. It’s a gripping and award winning urban fantasy that takes the traditional angel/demon mythology and turns it on its head. CODE BLACK, the first in the Paranormal Crimes Division series, is featured in the MASTERS OF THE HUNT: FATED AND FORBIDDEN box set. It’s out now and will come out as a single title this October. The follow-up to CODE BLACK, which I hinted at before, RED ALERT, will also release this winter. Can you share an excerpt of your upcoming book, or recently released one?

Absolutely! Since I mentioned Jame earlier, I think it’s only fair to give her some spotlight. This is from a scene in CODE BLACK in Jame’s POV. IT features Jame, a feisty and spirited shifter along with her partner, Bull, a big bad vampire with a gentle heart.

Bull’s strong hands gripped his biceps as his arms crossed over his chest. Pound upon pound of muscle stretched under his t-shirt and jeans. His cowboy boots appeared polished as always. “Jeez Louise. Talon’s gonna be all-fired up ‘bout this for sure.” The scent of worn leather wafted on the breeze when he leaned closer. “Think it’s a good idea for you to tell him?”

“When you get back from the police station and I’m done handling these idiot reporters, I’ll call Talon. In the meantime, phone Slick and let him know the deal. Meg should have some concrete answers by then.” Jame shrugged. “Better Talon hears all the news at once, not bits and pieces.”

“Not what I meant.” His eyes glistened far too sympathetic for her liking.

“I’m fine, Bull.” She slapped his shoulder. “Gotta get over the school girl crush sometime, right?”

“I’m sorry, Jame.” He patted her arm. The gentle touch showed his expert control. His strength, both in his size and his natural vampire state, could be devastating.

“I know. Thanks.” She tried to smile, but couldn’t. Scratching her nails against the bricks, she opted for a subject change. “Anyway, let’s meet up back at the office. We can review there. Try to get some dirt from the local boys, ‘k?”

“That’s a job I like, digging up the dirt.”

“You sure? Don’t you want to talk to the press?” Her eyebrows raised, a quick shot of hope running through her veins.

“Nah, darlin’. That’s your department.”

With luck, not for long. Solving the case lay at the forefront of her mind, but even so, a plan began to take shape for her future. Visions of barking out orders and taking point danced in her head. “Yeah, alright. See you.”

Bull disappeared down the alley. His large body moved far faster than his size dictated and surprised many a criminal suspect.

Jame sighed and kicked a can into a nearby gutter. When she felt confident Bull was out of earshot, she screamed loud and long. Her veins pulsed at her temples, the blood pouring into her ears. Energy zapped through her like an electric shock. Her body begged for a shift, but duty beckoned. With a last groan, she prepared for a fate worse than stakeouts, shootouts, or even all-nighters without coffee—a press conference.

The things you don’t see have the greatest impact.

There are always people around you who work tirelessly to do whatever it takes to make your endeavors successful. We don’t always see them, and often they don’t get the thanks they deserve, but they’re there.

So, I’d like to take a moment to say thank you to Ellis Leigh, Diana St. Gabriel, and A.J. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m French but I’ve been living in the US for almost 15 years. I wrote my first short story when I was fourteen, and it probably borrowed enough from Star Wars that copyright lawyers would have rubbed their hands together gleefully if I’d shown it to more than a few friends!

And as I’m typing this I have a six weeks old little elf on my lap wondering why I’m looking at the computer rather than giving her the worship she is due!

How many books have you written, and which one is your favorite?

I just went to my site to check and it’s either 44 or 57 depending on whether I count the serials as one book or separate installments.

Part of me wants to say of course I don’t have favorites, I love all my characters equally but… Shhh… don’t tell anyone but Out of the Box, and its sequel Living Out of the Box, have a special place in my heart. Out of the Box started as a very short story about a young woman going out to a dancing club and meeting a sexy-as-hell vampire. It was meant to be a standalone, more erotica than romance… But Virginia, the heroine, didn’t care for a one night stand and she demanded I give her and Anando more nights together, more stories, and something more than lust at first sight. I ended up with two full novels, plus a third one that’s a crossover with another series, and a fourth one is percolating at the back of my mind…

Do you ever get writer’s block? If so, how do you deal with it?

Yes and no. Yes, I get stuck every now and then when a scene or a plot point aren’t as exciting or as clear as I’d want them to be.

But I always have multiple stories going on at the same time, so if I am blocked on one of them, I generally can switch to another one and let my subconscious figure out how to fix the issue.

What does your writing space look like?

Like a complete mess..! I write sitting on the sofa, with my laptop on a side table next to it.

Right now, on that side table are piled up a couple of congratulation cards, a box of thank you cards I need to finish addressing, the remainders of our birth announcements, an empty milk bottle, a bottle of vitamin D drops, nail clippers for baby, my camera and its USB cord and a box of tissues. As long as the files on my laptop are in their place, that’s all that matters to me and i can write anywhere.

What is your favorite part about being an author? And your least favorite?

My favorite part is the magic moment during the writing process when everything just ‘clicks’ together and the characters get a life of their own. It’s not about following an outline anymore, but about listening to them and letting them guide the story where it needs to go. That’s always exciting.

My least favorite is the promo… I am a deep introvert and I’m very good at telling myself that no one cares to listen to what I say (seriously, is anyone reading this?!). I was also taught that it’s very tacky to toot your own horn so to go out there, climb on an imaginary box and call out to whoever might be nearby ‘I have a new story out and I had so much fun writing it that I’m sure you’ll have fun reading it too’ is something I have to force myself to do…

How long, on average, does it take you to write a book?

I can write the first draft of a novella in about 3 weeks and a full length novel in 6 weeks. Revisions and edits take longer depending on the story and what it needs.

Do you ever write scenes based on personal experience?

Sort of… but no one would ever recognize them as such. I might pluck a few sentences from a real conversation, or a setting, or the general events, but I always change things to make them fit my characters better.

What advice would you give to an aspiring to be an author? Something you wish someone had told you when you first started out?

My advice would be to write. Sounds obvious, doesn’t it? But sometimes it’s easy to get bogged down in research and think you can’t possibly start before you know everything there is to know about the town where the action is set. Or you start writing, but stop to edit as you go, spending three times longer tweaking a sentence than it took to write the full paragraph it belongs to.

Research is fine, edits are necessary, but there’s a time for both, and a time for doing nothing more than putting words on a page and working toward ‘the end’.

Who are your favorite go-to authors? What are you reading now?

My all-time favorite author – and I’ve been binge-re-reading his stories lately – is a French novelist named Rene Barjavel. He wrote mainly sci-fi, and I bet he would have said he didn’t write romance, but in every one of his stories there’s an enthralling couple and their journey together as well as in the ‘main’ story is always a fascinating one. This is how I aspire to write!

What’s coming down the pike from Kallysten? Any new releases coming that we can look forward to?

Right now I’m putting the last touch to the ‘Serenade Serial’ by finishing up story #5, and once that’s done I’ll start releasing the installments monthly. The way this story came to be was amusing to me, as it centers on a character that gave a ‘villain’ feeling in my previous serial, Ward of the Vampire, but she’s now the heroine of her own story and – I think – much more pleasant than she was in Ward!

Can you share a short excerpt of your newest release10. , or a sneak peek at something that’s coming soon?

Here’s the beginning of Overture, the first part of the Serenade Serial. Meet Irene…

All the trouble started because of a human. A human. Honestly. After six hundred years, I really should know better than that. I do know better than that. So maybe it didn’t start because of a human. Let me begin again.

All the trouble started because of my idiotic offspring.

All right, maybe calling him idiotic is a bit unfair. Morgan has brains. Before I made him one of us four hundred years ago—four hundred years to the day when this all started, actually—I’d made sure he was smart. Vampire families stay close, or at least mine does, and I’m not one to saddle myself with anyone susceptible to boring me to death within a decade. I’ve had three offspring, and they were all intelligent. Even Ethan, whose vampire life ended much earlier than it should have.

But I wasn’t talking about Ethan, that’s done and gone. I was talking about the most infuriating man I know—or at least, the most infuriating one I knew when this all started, Morgan Ward. Another man may have taken the crown since. Possibly even two. It’s a close race.

Morgan decided a quarter of a century ago that he wouldn’t feed off living humans anymore. He started buying blood from hospitals, blood banks, butchers, and the First Maker knows where else, and starving himself both of fresh blood and of physical contact.

His sister Lilah and I watched him for a while, waiting for him to snap out of it. She worried more than I did—or at least, she worried more than I let her see I did—but I got tired of waiting first. When you get to my age, waiting starts to become really annoying.

I enlisted Lilah’s help and our plan was to come to fruition the very night this story starts. Morgan didn’t want to have close contact with humans, but he wouldn’t have a choice, not when we inserted a carefully chosen girl into his life and forced him to deal with her. That plan was the reason I was in Paris, where Lilah would join me as soon as she set things into motion. If we remained close to New York, Morgan would pester us to set him and the girl free.

Once he figured out where we were, he might come all the way to France to do the pestering in person, but I suspected he would not. The last time he’d been in Paris, he’d almost been outed as a vampire, and he had sworn never to set foot in the city again. Granted, a century had passed since then, but Morgan has a thing about keeping his promises, even those he makes to himself. He and I are alike in that regard, so I can’t really fault him.

And there you have it. I was in Paris because of Morgan, and it’s because I was in Paris that all this started. Frankly, the last thing I was looking for, let alone wanted, was a romantic entanglement. I’m much too old for that kind of nonsense.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m Kristen Strassel. I write paranormal and contemporary romance. I love music, especially hair bands, and I write a lot of musicians. I can think of a million ways to make playing the guitar sound dirty. I also work as a makeup artist for film and TV. I get to meet a lot of cool people and see some amazing places. My job creeps into my writing too. I’m a huge football fan, I can usually put the guys to shame on Sundays. I love decorating things and attempting extreme sports that I’m tragically bad at. I have a pet cockatiel named McGee and he’s in a serious fake bromance with Guy Fieri.

Have you always wanted to be a writer? How long have you been writing?

Yes. When I was a kid, I wanted to write for music magazines, but as I got to college, music changed and what I wanted to do didn’t exist anymore. I struggled a lot finding my ‘thing,’ I didn’t realize when I was younger I really could do whatever I wanted to do. I grew up in a small town and everyone I knew had a very practical, traditional job. I tried that, but I was like a bull in a china shop. My path to doing what I’m supposed to do wasn’t straight, but I think it made me a better artist, in both makeup and writing.

I’ve always been writing. My best friend and I used to pass a notebook back and forth and write a few paragraphs, adding on to what the other wrote. The same friend came to me a few years ago and said that she was writing a book. I had had the same idea kicking around in my head for YEARS. I felt so strongly about it that I moved to Las Vegas because I needed to research and experience the city so I could write about it. My problem was I never knew how to finish anything, or how to craft a story. The two of us worked together until we both had complete books! Mine was Because the Night, and hers was Running Home (Julie Hutchings). Now I can’t make the ideas stop!

We know you write Paranormal romance. Do you write any other genres?

I also write contemporary romance. The Spotlight Series is about reality show winners who are caught in a show scandal. It’s NA, but I don’t write college student meets the bad boy NA. Daisy is a very young military widow, and her best friend Bree is a single mom. Abby in Too Many Reasons is graduating from college, but that’s not the focus of her story. It’s the band and her relationship with Devon. I didn’t do college in a traditional way, and I was always intrigued by my friends who didn’t either. The ones who made terrible choices and pulled themselves up out of the muck and thrived. They inspired many of my New Adult heroines, in my paranormal and my contemporary stories.

What do you have in the works right now that readers can look forward to?

The Fire Dancer just came out on May 21, which is a spinoff of The Night Songs Collection. Holly’s a bad ass burlesque dancer who bursts into flames on stage. It’s a different twist on my own vampire mythology, but there are lots of familiar faces from Night Songs. I’m writing an adult contemporary romance, a woman in her late 30s who is going against everything she’s ever done and finding love…yes, I’m being intentionally vague.

Are you a plotter or a pantser? Do you do research for your books?

A little of both? I get an idea that won’t leave me alone and I write down everything that comes to me. Plot, character traits, snippets of conversation. When I’m ready to sit down and spend some time with the story, I write a list of things that I think will get me from beginning to end. As I don’t know the characters yet, this is always subject to change.

I go in with a plan, but I let my characters do what’s best for them. It’s not always what I want them to do!

Research is so important. Since I write romance, I tend to read a lot of relationship articles, and how to, ahem, do things better, because I need to strip it down and really explore why my characters want what they do. So it’s different for every story. I actually moved to Las Vegas which was early research for my vampire books. I did a ton of research for my shifter books, because I needed to add animal traits and perspective to each of the characters. I’m always checking out architecture, food, anything I can about a city that I’m not familiar with.

The book I’m working on now requires a ton of research, since it’s set in two cities I’m unfamiliar with: Washington DC and Miami. As much as I love research, I also find that I default to things I know a lot about…hence the entertainment angle that likes to creep in to most of my books.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I had to ask around on this one. So I have this great office that I put a ton of effort into decorating. It’s totally me. Zebra print with gray and teal accents, all sorts of throw pillows and a fuzzy white rug. Lanterns hanging from the ceiling, and I made art for the walls. I love the room. I NEVER write in there. Ever. I have all my accounting crap in there for both businesses, and I think I associate sitting at the desk with numbers and not words. I sit on the couch and write. Although, I think I might give the office a try today. Why not, right?

Some writers make this awesome soundtrack. I watch the worst TV available. Home shopping, those music channels that just have the picture. There is a reason for this. They keep McGee mellow. Or bore him into a stupor. Anyway, I can concentrate on words instead of birds.

Which of your characters is your favorite, and why?

Aww, I can’t choose a favorite! I love them all. I spend so much time with them that even if they’re pissing me off, there’s a piece of me in every one of them. They all represent something that I’ve overcome, want to overcome, or want to be. And they are who I was at that point in my writing journey.

What’s your favorite genre/sub-genre to read? What are you reading now?

Right now I’m reading Beyond Shame by Kit Rocha. I’ve been reading a lot of erotica lately because my new story focuses on the emotional journey of the main characters, and sex is one of the ways they open up to each other.

I read pretty widely. Biographies, paranormal, contemporary…the only thing I’m not into is crime stories. I’m really interested in voice right now. If something grabs me, I want to figure out why. I’m also reading more recently published works, and indie stuff. A little while ago, I tried to catch up on the classics, but I realized they started too slowly for me. That’s not saying anything bad about those stories, I thought it was fascinating that my tolerance for consuming a story had changed so much.

Can you share a short excerpt of your newest release?

Of course. From The Fire Dancer:

Blade broke through the force field, the final barrier that was keeping us apart. As soon as his lips brushed mine, it was like I was breathing his oxygen. I drew him in. He didn’t hesitate, his tongue darted between my parted lips, shyly at first, but as I balled fistfuls of his hair, he grew more confident, pressing me against his chest. It was different, kissing a man. His strength, the feel of his beard moving against my cheek, and the taste. So unexpectedly sweet. God, I could drink it like nectar. His fangs scraped against my bottom lips, and I cried out, but he didn’t break the skin.

The flames slowly licked my skin, his skin, it was all one as we melted together. The heat intensified as we got sucked into the core of the inferno, falling through the reds and oranges into the blues as everything around us exploded. All I could see was Blade.

We hit the ground hard. Gravity was the only thing that could tear us apart. Blade was shrouded in blue, his features flickered before me. I gasped as I realized we were fully engulfed in flames.

“Shit.” Blade’s voice warped in the heat. “That was a hot kiss, but—“

I grabbed his hand. “We need to get in the water!” Pulling him toward the pond, we broke the still plane, the heat hissing as it surrounded us in a cloud of smoke. The bench we’d sat on had been reduced to kindling, crackling in the dying flames, but other than that, we hadn’t disturbed the peace of the park. “Oh my God.” I laughed.

Blade’s eyes fell down to my body, my skin wet and bare after the fire. He took one step closer to me. “You’re beautiful.” His words were wisps, like the smoke still wafting from his bare skin.

He was covered in soot and nothing else. I could barely breathe looking at him. My fingers were drawn to his chest, leaving a clean trail as I traced the outline of his muscles. “I guess we should’ve known that would happen.” I dared to meet his eyes. They glowed blue, like the center of the flame that threated to engulf us again if we took one step closer.

“How?” He blinked rapidly, probably trying to stave off the burn that was rising again inside of him.

“There’s a fine line between love and hate.”

Once Upon a Fiery Christmas is out!

What a year it has been so far. I mean, it’s not quite over yet, but it’s getting there. Three weeks and we jump into 2015! That’s crazy. For a while, I wasn’t sure Once Upon a Fiery Christmas would come out on time. Life has taken me on a crazy roller coaster ride, but I finally made it. Book three in my Return to Avalore series has been released.

This story has been in the making since before Rhia and Drake joined. I think it was high time I gave Chantelle and Sebastian their very own happily ever after. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Chantelle Warren is just biding her time until after the Christmas celebration she’s planning. Then she’ll ask the Elders to name her mate, because after months of Sebastian’s flirty smiles and almost innocent touches, she’s ready for more and confident he’s the one.
