Spotlight on Promising: Book Two of Kira’s Story by Rebel Miller @RebelMillerBoox
Promising: Book Two of Kira’s Story
PROMISING, the riveting follow-up to AWAKENING by Rebel Miller.
Faced with diverging loyalties — between those she loves and her responsibility to the Realm — Kira has to make heartrending and strategic decisions that threaten to jeopardize her future.
As her connection to Tai deepens and turmoil in the Realm builds, so does Gannon’s frustration at being unable to call Kira his own.
Worlds at War … A Heart in Conflict
While the Realm stands defiant amidst rising unrest, Kira is thrust into a role that puts her at the forefront of her system’s governance and law, supporting a landmark position. Following a devastating turn of events, she turns to Tai for a shoulder to lean on after making a painful choice to ensure Gannon fulfils the role he was meant for.
As she becomes a reluctant – yet inspiring – voice for her caste, Kira learns about one of the Realm’s most well-kept secrets and how far leadership will go to prevent it from being revealed. What she doesn’t know is how much the decisions of her past have the power to bring enemies into her path, threatening to destroy everyone she holds close to her heart.
This novel is for mature audiences (18+) and includes committed relationships with multiple partners.

Excerpt
“How is it that with all our system’s technology I can’t make love to you from thousands of light years away?”
I snorted, but my lips tilted up at the corners nevertheless. “I’m sure the Protectorate has some sort of virtual reality device that could be refashioned just for that purpose,” I offered, rearranging the wool blanket on my lap.
I was curled up in bed, facing my monitor and resting against a pile of pillows. It had become a familiar position over the last few weeks, one from which I would relay the day’s activities during my nightly call with Gannon. Well, it was a nightly call for me. The sun had already risen where Gannon lived, on Dignitas One.
Suddenly, Gannon seemed to be deep in concentration. “No, on second thought, there’s no technology that could ever measure up to the real thing.” He grinned.
I smiled, heat rising to my cheeks.
“There’s the smile I was looking for,” Gannon said, leaning closer to his monitor, and so closer to me.
He was sitting in his office. He had been holding our calls from there more frequently over the last month. From what I could see, his office was a large, well-lit space. A wall of floor-to-ceiling glass ran its expanse directly behind him. Through it, I could see citizens of every caste striding by in obvious haste to get things done, more than likely at Gannon’s bidding. During these nighttime conversations with Gannon, and within the intimate surroundings of my bedroom, it was easy to forget who he was and his status. As chancellor, he surely had, every day, a checklist as long as my arm, filled with tasks.
I frowned as I noted the time. “I should let you go,” I said, sitting up.
“Why?”
I glanced pointedly behind him, fiddling with the thin strap of my top. “Your office looks incredibly busy.”
He blinked then swiveled in his chair to look at the steady stream of people behind him.
“Oh, my support always look like that,” he said, mischief glittering in his clear blue eyes as he turned back to me. “They think it’ll prevent me asking them to do anything else.” He winked, and I laughed, loving his cheekiness.
If his office was anything like the Judiciary on Prospect Eight, where I worked, there would have been, since Septima, a heightened state of activity and an added fervor underscoring every project. The Corona had wasted no time gaining approval from Realm Council to initiate an investigation that would seek out who was responsible for the attack. In her own words, it was an act of war against law-abiding citizens that would not go without justice.
A shiver rippled through me as I recalled her remark.
“Gannon,” I said so sharply that he became somber at once, “promise me you won’t monitor my family anymore.”
He narrowed his eyes. “Why would I do that?”
I swallowed. “Uncle Paol made his decision, but my cousin, she’s safe with my parents,” I said. “He’ll need to answer for his own choices.”
“I would rather be aware of what your uncle’s up to,” he said. “If he’s still aligned with the factions, then, depending on what he does, you or your family could be in danger.”
I was shaking my head before he finished speaking. “It would be best for Adria and my family if we just let things lie,” I said.
Gannon scowled. “That’s not something I normally do, Kira,” he said. “Things have a way of coming back up to haunt people.”
I leaned toward him, clenching my fists. “Please.”
Gannon must have seen something in my expression because he nodded, though with a great amount of obvious reluctance.
He ran a hand through his hair, disheveling the blond locks, as he lowered his gaze to his desk. “How’d it go today?” he asked.
I thought for a moment then ended up with “Good.” It was odd to describe a farewell as such, but there was truly no other way to describe it. I sighed. “A lot of people came by.”
He glanced up from under his lashes. “Was Tai there?”
I hesitated then nodded.
Gannon lowered his gaze again, this time to his hands, which were now clasped tightly in front of him on his clear glass desktop. “And how is the newly appointed commander of Prospect Council?” he asked, still looking at some point around his wrists.
I blinked. “He … seems fine.”
Gannon nodded, still not looking at me.
I studied the crown of his head with a frown. “When will you be back on Prospect?” I asked, hoping to change his mood.
Finally he glanced up, with apology clear in his eyes. “I was hoping to be there in the next few days,” he said, cringing, “but my father just asked me to lead discussions on Hale Three. Since their minister’s murder on Septima ¾”
My pulse spiked. “Where on Hale Three?”
Gannon drew back, frowning, no doubt at my sharp tone. “A town called Tork.”
I shot up to my knees, gripping the blanket on my lap. “Don’t go.”
Worry flickered across his face. “Kira, what’s wrong?”
I licked my lips. “The factions,” I said. “They’re using Tork as a command center. You could get hurt.” Or worse. Oh gods.
Gannon’s shoulders dipped as he frowned. “Lahra,” he began, and I melted a little at the endearment. “There’s violence everywhere. I’ll be well protected.”
That wasn’t enough. “Can’t someone else go instead?”
He shook his head, regret clouding his eyes. “It’s not that sim¾”
“Please,” I said, holding back a swell of fear. “I can’t have what happened to my aunt happen to you.”

Spotlight on Black Dawn by Rose Wulf
Hello and thank you for having me today!
I’m super excited to tell you about my newest release, Black Dawn (Dark Light 1)! As the start of a new paranormal romance series starring angels, demons, and a few things in between, Black Dawn lays the ground work for the Dark Light world. I’m thrilled to be bringing this series to you and am absolutely sure that the gamut of sexy, bad-ass, Alpha heroes and their capable heroines will keep you begging for more! But I don’t want to get too ahead of myself, so here’s a little about Black Dawn:
Blurb:
Demons are real, and they walk among us.
Isolde Duchane grew up with a demon for a bodyguard. But as she’s matured, so have her preferences. And she’s got a thing for tall, strong, dark, and powerful demonic men. Really just one very specific demonic man. It’s too bad his life is bound to hers, putting her in a terribly awkward spot since what she wants is something more than a bodyguard.
Darr was summoned to protect Izzy when she was young. And he played the part to keep his own personal demons off his back. But things are starting to get out of hand, and not just because of his powerful attraction to the woman she’s become. The demon he’s been hiding from may have found him, and if he has… he may never get to tell Izzy the truth.
Excerpt:
“But how do you know he isn’t interested?” Letty pushed.
“Couldn’t your father release him from the bond?” Britt asked.
Izzy smiled a bit and shook her head. “Why would he be? I’m the face of his servitude, essentially. I’m amazed he doesn’t hate me—or he hides it insanely well. And no, a Life Bond is a permanent thing. Breakable only by someone’s death.”
“Like yours?”
All three jumped at the unfamiliar male voice coming from the back of the cabin. A male figure stepped into the yellow globe light, the sneer on his lips assuring Izzy he wasn’t there to make friends.
“How did you get in here?” Britt demanded, pushing to her feet.
“Britt,” Izzy called as she and Letty stood as well. Clearly Britt wasn’t attuned to identifying demons like Izzy was.
“The usual way,” the demon returned. He switched his sneering gaze to Izzy and added, “I don’t suppose you’re interested in releasing Darr from the ties that bind?”
Izzy swallowed. “If you kill me he’ll die, too.”
“Supposedly.” The demon rushed her without warning, knocking her off her feet and sending her friends diving out of the way.
Izzy crashed over the futon and into a wall, her body aching from the impact. And he’d only hit her with his hand. If he summoned a dark energy wave for her she’d be a goner.
“Darr.”
Sometime in the first couple of years, Darr had taught her a short, wordless spell she could use to call for him when he wasn’t already beside her. He said it sent a jolt through him, alerting his senses to her situation and pulling him to her practically without his consent. She hated using it, but she couldn’t let this demon kill her. And he’d surely go for her friends next if he succeeded in killing her. She couldn’t let that happen, either.
“Get up,” the demon commanded. An invisible hand wrapped around her throat and hauled her mercilessly off the floor. She could barely dig her bare toes into the wood floor. The demon smirked and cocked his head. “Little Izzy Duchane,” he taunted, rolling his extended wrist slightly. The force holding her throat rolled to match, straining the side of her neck. “Goodby—”
A strong arm locked around the demon’s own throat and threw him bodily backward. The demon rolled several times before his spine met with a wrought iron bedpost.
Darr stalked up to him, his shoulders visibly tight beneath his shirt, fists clenched at his sides. “You dare,” he growled, his deep voice full of venom and promises of pain.
“W-wait!” the demon begged, pushing to his knees and struggling to stand.
Darr yanked him to his feet and locked a hand around his neck. Izzy couldn’t hear what he said next, but she didn’t need to. A cold chill swept through the room, the overhead lights flickered, and the demon let out a gurgled scream Izzy could barely hear. Darr released the corpse a moment before it was consumed in black hellfire.
The chill faded. The lighting stabilized.
Izzy pushed herself to her knees, realizing her ankle had twisted when her attacker’s concentration had snapped and she’d fallen. But that was the least of her pains. She’d crashed into a metal bar and tumbled into a solid wooden wall, cracking her head and at least one of her shoulders. He made it…
“Izzy,” Darr called gently, dropping to a knee in front of her as his hands landed on her shoulders. His touch was feather light as he discerned her injuries. “I’m sorry.”
The guilt that choked his voice squeezed her heart.
“I’m okay,” she insisted. “Just some new bruises. No bikini for me tomorrow.”
Darr frowned deeply. He clearly wasn’t appreciative of her attempted humor. “I’m going to pick you up,” he warned. A heartbeat after she nodded her understanding, he’d swept her into his arms. The movement sent some new jolts of pain through her, but being settled and cradled against his strong, broad chest countered that pain with encompassing warmth.

Rose Wulf is a giant romance fangirl. Hot, protective, sometimes even downright barbaric heroes and spitfire heroines are her favorites. Rose has been writing for as long as she can remember, and over the years she’s only grown fonder of it. The bonds between characters have always captivated her, and as an author those are Rose’s favorite things to play with – not always to the relief of her fictional babies!
Behind the scenes Rose is a quiet personality. She enjoys spending her non-writing time with her four year-old German Shepherd, Shadow, her mom, and her friends. Be it a fun game of Cards Against Humanity or a relaxing movie night, Rose believes everything is better with company. Spotlight on Viper by Moira Callahan
Thank you for letting me visit your blog today to share my latest release with your readers.
This story was a complete surprise from my muse one night. When the first niggling thought took root I had no idea what it would become, but quickly it began to take form and The Scoundrels MC came to life. VIPER is my first foray into this new genre and I’m rather excited that it’s finally here.
BLURB:
The Scoundrels MC, 1
An enemy from the club’s past returns with a vengeance. The MC president and his old lady are missing, and the man behind the act is in the wind.
Krista Richmond has always been protected from the club’s shadier endeavors. In one split second she finds herself thrust head first into the chaos. Relying on a man she knows she can trust with her life, if not her heart, Krista isn’t backing down from whatever he and the club need from her. Now if only her heart would get the memo.
Dillon “Viper” Kendrick is not a man to be trifled with. He’s earned his spot at the table by being smart and merciless. There is nothing that can push Viper off balance—except her. It’s futile fighting his feelings and yet losing her would kill whatever good remains inside him. Which means saving her parents and killing the man who threatens them all.
Be warned: anal play, spanking
EXCERPT:
Viper couldn’t resist her. He took her mouth in a kiss that was anything but gentle. He was too hungry for her. Her taste only sent his need higher and made his cock twitch against her thigh. She pressed in closer to him, the heat from her pussy making him growl deep in his throat. Dropping a hand to her ass, he cupped a cheek and pulled her in against his aching dick. Then she began to rock her hips.
Tearing his mouth from hers, he found forming thought a challenge. “Fucking hell, woman, what you do to me. But I won’t take you until you talk to me.”
She pouted at him but settled down on his thighs again. “I should hate you.”
“Yeah, you should.” His hope was that she didn’t.
“I should also throw you out of the room and demand you leave me alone. But I can’t. I don’t think I could ever truly hate you, Viper. I’m still upset with you and I might be for a while yet, but I also want you something fierce. I have for years. Yes, Daddy’s going to be upset, and we’ll deal with that together. Mom will help there. She’s rather fond of you, after all. And I’m definitely worried about the fallout this could have on you with the club. Not enough to let you go, though, for the record.”
He could deal with all that. In fact, the coiled tension in his chest loosened up a lot from her words, letting him breathe easier. “I will do anything you need me to do to help you get over your upset with me. Tell me what you need and I’ll do it, no questions asked.”
“Right now, all I need is for you to follow through. I need you, Viper. Inside me and making me forget everything for a time. Then I need you to hold me tight and never let go.”
“Done.”
“Then strip me down and fuck me already.”
A shudder tore through his body at her husky demand. He grabbed her shirt hem and pulled it off over her head. The instant he saw her bared, the air was slammed from his chest. “Beautiful,” he got out with a groan. Tight nipples surrounded by darker areolas topped heavy breasts. She was his fantasy made real, and she was all his. Dipping his head toward a nipple, he flicked it with his tongue and then latched on.
Her hips lifted to rub against his cock while a moan tore from her body. Krista grabbed onto his head and hair, pressing him in closer to her lush breast. Sucking hard he rolled the nipple against the roof of his mouth while grabbing her ass in both hands to pull her tighter against his throbbing dick.
Krista used the hold on his hair to yank him up for a kiss. Thrusting his tongue in to meet hers in a duel, Viper pushed up to his feet and spun around. Slowly, he laid her out on the bed, keeping their mouths fused together. His weight pushed her into the bedding but never stopped her hips from moving. She was trying to drive him insane.

BLURB
Biosystems engineer Blair Adams has worked for Oliver Fairchild, CEO of Fairchild BioSystems, for seven years. And for the past two years, she’s turned him down every single time he’s asked her out. Blair has more than one secret from her past she prays will stay hidden. If Oliver discovers them, she risks losing more than her heart to her charismatic, sexy boss.
Oliver is part of a group of friends financing the efforts to put a stop to The Madeline Project. The program now has a mind of its own, thanks to a virus called Tommy Twister. These men have power, resources, and money, but they’re as ruthless and possessive as the storms ravaging Earth.
They call themselves the Weathermen…
EXCERPT
When Oliver returned he was barefoot, and she moaned softly. There was something so damn sexy about a barefoot man. He dumped a box of condoms and a bottle of lube on the table next to the sofa, and then he grinned in a way that had her pussy wet all over again.
“Now, I’m ready to make love to you.”
He kissed her again, rougher this time, but she didn’t mind at all. He was so fucking sexy in the way he moved his mouth over hers. When he released her mouth and planted kisses along her neck again, she pushed her body against his, desperate to be skin to skin.
Oliver pulled off her top, nuzzling his face between the cups in her bra. “This is very pretty, but it needs to go.” He unhooked it with one hand, forcing another soft moan from her at the expertise of his gesture, and then he pulled it off her and tossed it onto the floor. “I knew you’d be fucking exquisite. I just knew it.”
No one had ever called her body exquisite. Fat, yes. Lush, definitely. Curvy and full were both used alongside not so thinly veiled suggestions to lose a few pounds so she’d be healthier. But exquisite? Never.
“You’re so damn sexy.”
He grasped her breasts and teased the nipples with his teeth and tongue, taking turns, making such satisfied noises in the back of his throat that she was sure she’d cry from happiness. She’d never had this experience before. This worshipping of her body as though it was meant to be treasured, not merely taken and then made fun of, or picked apart and critiqued.
“Oliver, thank you.”
He looked into her eyes tenderly. “For what?”
“For being like this. For making me feel so … so wanted.”
He brushed a finger along her face, sending shivers down her spine. “Oh, Blair. I do want you. I’ve wanted you for a long time. You’re beautiful. I mean that. It’s very hard right now to hold myself back. I’m dying here.”
She swallowed hard against the lump in her throat. “So am I. In a good way, I mean. I’ve never been this turned on.”
His sweet, sexy smile sent fresh arousal racing through her. He licked her breasts again, paying attention this time to the undersides, and then he pushed her down until she was on her back, and peeled off her Capri pants, panties, and sandals. He sat back on his heels, his gaze traveling lazily over her, the same smile still on his face.
“Damn. You’re more beautiful than I pictured.” He took his dick out of his jeans and pulled on it. “I don’t know where to go first.”
Blair’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. She watched him stroke his cock, mesmerized by the length and width of it. Red, swollen, and glistening with pre-cum already at the tip, it grew in his hand. She couldn’t stop staring at it. Oliver pleasuring himself this way, like he did it all the time in front of people, was the sexiest thing she’d ever seen.
When he released his dick, he moved his hands over her thighs, up and down, then gently spread her legs. He turned her torso toward the edge of the sofa and sat on the coffee table, his cock still free, and licked her inner thighs.
Blair cried out loudly, the desire climbing to crazy levels now. With each pass of his tongue, he moved closer to her labia, until he licked them, too. She whimpered softly as he teased the opening to her wetness with a finger, and when he slid it inside her pussy, she clamped down on it, trying to make herself come.
He made soft noises in the back of his throat as he licked her clit, over and over, while moving his finger in and out at the same time. “Oh, baby. You taste like heaven.”

She ran her fingers through her cat’s soft fur, shooting a glance at Dylan, who stood at the counter. She hadn’t seen him since high school, and the years sure had been good to him. He wore a lab coat over a rumpled blue button-down shirt and a pair of worn jeans. Carly found herself itching to slide the lab coat off his shoulders so she could get a better look at his physique. His apparel did nothing to hide the fact that he was perfectly cut, but she wanted to see for herself. She wanted to slide her hands down his arms and feel the muscles there. She thought of her arms circling around his waist and tilting her head up for his kiss as she cupped his muscular backside.
Suddenly Dylan turned to her, and she realized she’d been staring at him. He smiled, revealing perfect white teeth. “Something wrong, sweetheart?”
Blushing furiously, she turned back to her cat. “No, nothing,” she mumbled, but her pink parts were throbbing with need. Damn, she needed to get laid.
Wow, when has that thought ever crossed my mind? She’d finally given in and had sex with her one serious college boyfriend, then wondered what all the fuss was about. Somehow, she’d bet Dylan could show her what it was about.
When he walked slowly toward her, she realized she’d been staring at him again. She stood up straight and faced him, expecting him to stop within a couple of feet of her. But then she noticed his expression—his hooded eyes, his parted lips—and her heart sped up.
Dylan backed her up against an empty cage, not touching her, but standing so close he trapped her nonetheless. “Carls, I’m trying to be a good boy, but it’s very hard when you keep looking at me like that.”
She almost giggled at the double-entendre. Yes, sometimes she had the sense of humor of a twelve-year-old boy.
Dylan smirked and raised one dark eyebrow, immediately catching her meaning. Her smile quickly disappeared as he pressed his lower half to hers. She gasped as she felt his erection. My God, he must have a monster in his pants. She lifted her hands, thinking she should push him away, but instead she fisted his shirt, pulling him closer. When he bent his head to kiss her, she let her eyes float shut.
His lips had barely brushed hers when…

“Detective James, what can I do for you?” Captain Coleman Douglass leaned back in his chair and looked the detective in the eye. Deep down, Cole suspected what Ethan James was about to tell him. He didn’t relish the fact his suspicions would be confirmed, but he’d known for weeks that this night was inevitable.
He only thanked God there were no fatalities.
“Sir, I need to talk to you about Detective Knowles. It’s urgent.” “Sit down, Detective. Let me get you a cup of coffee and—”
“Thank you sir, but no,” Ethan interrupted. “I didn’t come for coffee.”
Okay, obviously this isn’t a social call. He watched Ethan draw in a deep breath, and scan the room, as if unable to meet Cole’s eyes.
“Well, all right then. Say what you have to say. What about Detective Knowles?”
Just saying her name was like pouring syrup over flapjacks. Alicia Knowles was the sugar in his coffee, the up to his down, the left to his right.
They’d first met two years ago. Both had been on vacation in Miami. Sun, sand, and surf—it had all changed his life forever. Cole had never thought his first vacation in three years would lead to love.
On his last night in Miami, he’d sat by the sand at midnight, the light from his beach house behind him reflecting over the water. On one of the benches along the boardwalk, unwilling to believe he needed to return to work, he’d listened to the breeze, the sounds and movements of the waves crashing against one another.
He wasn’t sure how long he’d sat there, lost in his own thoughts, when he felt the bench beside him shift. He’d looked over to his left and had never glanced away again.
Not the time, Cole. Not the time. Think about her later.
“I think she came back too soon.” Ethan cleared his throat. “To the job, I mean.”
To suspect it and then hear the words spoken aloud didn’t settle within Cole. He’d seen it for weeks, in the shadows beneath her eyes, watched the far-off look that settled over her face more times than he liked. He thought she might be reliving the past and the ordeal she’d gone through. Dammit, he wanted to take Parker Feeney apart with his bare hands. Too bad the bastard was already dead.
Cole’s heart had ached at the pain, sadness, and even fear on Alicia’s face too many times to count. What he wouldn’t give to be able to erase the memories from her mind.
“Christ, Ethan, sit the fuck down. I’m getting a crick in my neck.” He got up from behind his desk, and moved to the small table in the corner where the coffeemaker sat.
He filled two mugs with steaming brew, added two sugars and milk to his, then turned to Ethan. Thankful the guy had taken a seat, Cole felt sorry for him. He waited with elbows parked on his knees, head between his hands, and forlorn, as if he’d lost his best friend. “You take your coffee straight or…?”
“Straight,” Ethan mumbled.
Cole carried both mugs back to his desk, placing one in front of Ethan. He sat with mug in hand and took a satisfying drink. Time to get things out in the open. “Why do you feel Detective Knowles returned to duty too soon? What happened tonight?”
Ethan sat up, dragged both hands through his hair, and leaned his head back to stare at the ceiling. “Sir, have you ever done something that would change your life forever? Even though it would be for someone’s own good and well-being, you still hesitated because in mere hours, they could end up despising you?”
Ethan lowered his chin and stared at Cole through confused and worried eyes.
Cole’s heart went out to the guy, but he suspected Alicia had to be taken off the street. He just needed confirmation of the fact.
“Yeah, I have, but I got over it. You have to do what is best for yourself and your partner, not to mention your fellow officers who could be called out to a scene with you two. And let’s not forget the citizens on the street. There is more than just one person’s life on the line if your partner can’t handle the job and something goes awry. You can’t let it get personal. Sounds cold, but it’s a harsh world in which we live. I don’t have to tell you that.” Cole set his mug on his desk, sat back in the chair, and crossed both arms over his chest. “Tell me what happened, Ethan.”
“Sir—” Ethan began.
“Call me Cole. You should know by now I don’t stand on ceremony.” Even though he had only been with Precinct Fifteen for about sixteen weeks, he had been welcomed well by all but one detective in the division. The only one who hadn’t been as welcoming was the woman Ethan obviously needed to discuss.
After he’d replaced her father when he’d retired, Alicia’s glares and icy façade whenever he was present let Cole know she disapproved of his status. He was sure she hated him for taking her dad’s place.
Of all the critics he’d been forced to deal with since he took the new job, her opinion of him was the only one that cut him to the quick. Alicia used their work relationship as a wall between them. He couldn’t really blame her. It was one of the reasons he didn’t act upon his feelings for her, or try to rekindle the spark.
Not yet anyway.
Ethan must not know about Alicia’s discomfort with me. If he did, he might not be so quick to speak up.
She would no doubt be livid about Ethan’s recommendation to take her off the street. She’d be even more irate that Cole would sign the order.
“Yeah.” Ethan cleared his throat. “It’s been nearly six months since the night Detective Knowles was kidnapped. The first thing we saw when we got to the scene tonight was Monica Fuller gagged, her body on the ground. It was like seeing Ali, uh, Detective Knowles, as she was that night when we found her in a similar condition. Tonight, she went pale, seemed to stagger, almost as if she was confused and off balance. It shook her up so bad, she never once asked about the suspect. It was very much unlike her. Usually in a case like this, if she sees the suspect, she’s the first on foot after him.”
Ethan stared Cole in the eye. His expression was pained and a little bit sad. “She even tried to lift the body from the cement where Fuller had dragged the victim. That it was against procedure didn’t bother her.”
“If you were aware it was against protocol, why did you allow her to get that close to the victim, Detective James?” Cole had a pretty good idea why, but he needed the full version of Ethan’s story before he could make the decision that was already ninety-nine percent final in his mind.
“I did it because Ali seemed so agitated. I know she was reliving what happened to her, and part of me remembered, too. What if the night we found Ali had gone differently? What if we were too late?”
A shiver ran through Cole at Ethan’s words. Just the thought of things playing out any differently chilled him to the bone.
A second chance. It’s what you have here. Remember that, Douglass.
Ethan took a deep breath and reached forward to retrieve his coffee. He took a swig of the warm liquid then continued. “I know I may have been a bit biased and in the wrong myself, Captain, to be that close, contaminating the scene. I’ll take the reprimand for it. But as soon as I got her in the car, Ali calmed down considerably. I’d hoped it would get her head back into the game, but it didn’t.”
Cole leaned back in his chair, hesitant to ask, but he had to. “What happened after you got her away from the victim?”
Ethan looked toward the window to Cole’s left, seeing what, he didn’t know. But the sorrow on his face told the whole story. Cole knew he wouldn’t like the next words.
“After the M.E. got to the scene, he was surprised to find the body had been moved slightly. He was really lit up about it and….” Ethan took a gulp of his coffee and set it back on the desk, almost sloshing the dark liquid over the rim. “I tried to explain it all to him, but he wouldn’t listen. He got loud. Before I could stop her, Detective Knowles was out of the car, angry at him for what she called callousness. Then Alicia just decked him. I have never seen her lose it like this while on the job.”
It was worse than he’d thought. Sighing, Cole picked up the yellow memo pad to his left and held it out toward Ethan. “Write it down. All of it. I’m sure the M.E. will bring this to my attention before the day is out. I’m surprised I haven’t heard about it already.”
Ethan quickly averted his eyes, without taking the pad.
Cole suspected there was more to come. He dropped the pad back on his desk. “What else happened out there, Detective? I can’t have omissions on this. I need to handle it,” Cole said, putting the weight of authority in his voice. “I need to know all of it.”
“Detective Isabella Knowles arrived on the scene. She took it over and settled the M.E. down. It was over and done with. I doubt he’ll make a complaint. Hell, he was probably just pissed off at being dragged out of bed. Or maybe being decked by a woman. I don’t know. I shouldn’t have mentioned it.”
Cole threw his pen on the desk. “Don’t make excuses, James. You know damn well these incidents have to be reported. You and Detective Knowles should not have moved the victim at all, and Knowles shouldn’t be on the job if she can’t handle it.”
“But Cole—”
“No, I’ve heard enough.” Cole tossed the memo pad toward him. Ethan caught it, but just barely. “All of it. You came to me and you can be certain I’ll take care of this matter. A citation will also be put in your folder about disturbing the victim. The only reason you aren’t suspended right now is because your record is squeaky clean. Don’t make me change my mind.”
Cole reached for the phone on his right. He’d order Alicia to his office within the next thirty minutes or he’d go get her. Rage boiled within him. It was as if a beast wanted to claw its way through him, manic to be released. He’d known she shouldn’t be back on the job. To risk her pensions, suspension, everything important to her because of her anger…. He was furious she couldn’t manage it.
It just showed how out of control she was. She couldn’t keep herself in check. But his feelings for her had shaded the truth. He was as much at fault as she was.
“Cole… damn it. I know you have to talk to her about all of this, but what consequences will she face?”
Cole’s fingers tightened on the telephone receiver. His jaw clenched. He understood Ethan’s loyalty to Alicia. Dammit, he’d walk to hell and back for her, too. She’d touched him in more ways than one the night they’d first met. He wanted more of the pleasure and the swell of emotions that consumed him when he was with her. She had made him feel ten feet tall, strong, and powerful. She’d made him feel like a man—her man.
“You know exactly what consequences your partner will face. You realized it before you came in here. While I should suspend your ass, too, I need one of you on this case that has insight into Fuller. It might take anyone new too much time to catch up. But you’re on desk duty only. Stay put in your office unless I direct you otherwise. Now, take the pad, head somewhere private, and write down everything that happened this morning. Have it on my desk in an hour.” Cole punched the numbers on the phone, angrier than he had ever been in his life. “You’re dismissed, Detective James. I’ll handle things from here.”
As the phone rang at the other end of the line, Cole watched Ethan leave his office and prayed he could keep himself from killing Alicia Knowles with his bare hands. He was in a tough spot as her boss and as someone who cared about her. But he had to stop the downhill slide her life was on before she got herself killed.
He’d see to it that she was protected.
Even from herself.

Excerpt:
Theo obviously liked how I looked. He’d enjoyed an eyeful of my bra-less chest and he’d also taken a sudden interest in my lips. I licked the lingering droplet of wine off the upper while lowering my glass. Time to get things moving. “So.”
He lifted his gaze, brow quirked. “So.”
“Why’d you agree to come over tonight?”
Theo’s sexy smirk sent flutters through my stomach. “I enjoy making you laugh. Helping you remember there’s life outside of your life’s goal.”
“Is that all?”
He nodded and tipped up his glass, not taking the time to savor the dry, oaken flavor.
My entire body tingled with the thought success was in reach. “Why didn’t you sit over here with me?”
Theo peered at me with his dark eyes. Fathomless and unreadable. “Because you’re on a mission.”
For the second time since he’d arrived, laughter bubbled from me. “I am.”
“And according to you, you always succeed.”
“I do.”
He studied the wine while swirling it in the glass. “I sat over here to thwart your plans.”
I narrowed my eyes as I studied his face. “Why?”
“You don’t need any distractions right now.”
Spine stiffening, I lifted my chin. “Or perhaps that’s exactly what I need right now.”
“Not my kind of distraction.”
His gaze latched onto me, and finally—finally—heat I’d dreamed of simmered in his stare. I fought the strange desire to lower my eyes. “I never back down. Ever.”
His coy smirk sent a rush of moisture straight south to slick my panties. “You should.”
“Oh?” I allowed my smile to grow and rubbed a fingertip along my shirt’s drooping neckline. His attention swung downward. “And why’s that?”
“You’re messing with fire.” He lifted his gaze and scorched me with the lust in his black eyes.
Fire? Oh yeah. My body ignited, and burning need swelled between my thighs and settled into my clit. I got up and set my wine glass on the coffee table while moving around it—all without breaking eye contact. Focused on his face, I peered down at him from between his legs. “I can handle a little heat.”

Spotlight on Libby Bishop’s Ghosts of Emerald Bay
Title: Ghosts of Emerald Bay
Series: Revenant Investigations, Book Three
Blurb:
Kate Briar is enjoying her vacation when her boss calls her to the office about a job. As head researcher for Revenant Investigations—a paranormal investigation team—she’s unsure why he sounds so wary about her taking the case. After all, there’s very few people in Noble, Maine she’d refuse to work with. She’s even more uncertain about his hesitation when he announces that the case is one she’s dreamed of since she was a teenager. That is, until he tells her who she’ll be working with.
Murphy O’Keefe is a well-known legend hunter. He chases the legends of the dead for profit. Kate used to be good friends with him, and they were growing much closer before he betrayed her. She was helping him with a case when she woke up one morning to find all of her research and all of the artifacts she’d found gone—she hasn’t seen him since.
To keep things civil, she offers him a truce, not wanting to spoil the importance of the new case. But she doesn’t realize the turmoil of anger and attraction that truce will ignite. Nor that her fate is directly in the hands of the man that broke her heart.
Excerpt:
Sitting at his desk, Folger leaned his forearms against it and folded his hands together. “I’ll start by telling you the investigation is at the Norling Lighthouse.”
Excitement sparked within her at the name, and she couldn’t help but smile wide. “Folger! I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to investigate Norling since I was a teenager.”
Folger chuckled. “I know, which is why you’d be the perfect person for the job.”
“Exactly what does the client want?” The lighthouse was known to be haunted by three different ghosts, but it was rumored to be connected to the pirates who came through Noble during the summer months.
“The interest is in the ghost who walks the lighthouse, but the other ghosts should be noted as well. The most important thing for him, our client, is to find the lighthouse keeper’s journal, because he believes it’s somehow connected the pirate legend.”
The joy that was coursing through her drained away, and dread took its place. She understood now why both he and Arabella had kept the client’s name from her—it wasn’t a Noble resident. Their client was a legend-hunter: a person who hunted myths of the dead for profit.
“Kate, look at me.”
She met Folger’s gaze, which was filled with understanding.
“It’s Murphy O’Keefe.”
Her throat went dry and refused to work. Murphy was the one person on the face of the planet she never wanted to see again. Their last encounter was so engrained into memory, all she had to do was think about it and she was right back there in the moment, feeling the anger at his betrayal all over again.
“He has presented enough facts to the town council they’ve agreed to allow him to dig deeper into the lighthouse keeper, who, as you know, is the one haunting the lighthouse itself.” Folger leaned back in his chair. “They had a stipulation—Revenant Investigations is to send someone with him to document the investigation and help him search. They asked specifically for you since you know the history of the lighthouse and the pirates better than all of Noble, save Doyle,” he was the head of the Historical Society, “—but if you don’t want to do this, I’ll understand.”
Kate took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. She swallowed hard, the motion near painful. “Does he,” she cleared her throat, “have to be at the lighthouse? Can I investigate by myself or with another team member?”
Folger shook his head. “No. He has to be there—it was his stipulation. However, if you feel it necessary to bring in another member of the team, that’s what will be done.”
Kate crossed her legs, wondering what to do. This case was a dream case for her. She practically begged the Historical Society every year to let her go in for even just one night. But to deal with Murphy? She’d trusted him as a friend and teammate before she started with Revenant and he’d betrayed her. Gutted her, to be more exact. But still, the Norling Lighthouse…
What if she never got another chance to investigate?
“He can’t run with the goods, so to speak? He has an ironclad agreement with the council?”
Folger handed her a piece of paper. “I have the entire document on file, but that’s really all you need to see.”
She began to read it, very carefully.
“In summary, it states that Murphy cannot use any of the findings for profit. That includes documents, journals, jewelry, or any other historical artifact relating to the pirates of Emerald Bay and those who dwelled in the lighthouse, or once dwelled where the lighthouse and the keeper’s house now stand.”
That’s exactly what the paper she was holding stated. She’d read it four more times before handing it back to Folger. “No profit.”
“Not a penny. All he’ll receive is credit for helping find anything we don’t already know for a fact. He can’t even sell the story, Kate—Noble will control how everything will be announced and released.”
So Murphy would only get credit… Kate took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. “I’ll do it, Folger. I’ll take the case.”

He’s used to the weird undercurrents of the city and now works in StarZ that caters to the supernatural folks. His band, Deep Dream, play there. He’s tasked with taking care of the ‘ordinary humans’ that arrive in the club and he does this happily …
With a broken heart to heal Ethan swore off love long ago … that is until starry eyed Anna Prideaux wanders into his life.
Then sparks start to fly …
Read an excerpt
She watched him disappear into the gloom. Anna stood and scooped her phone from the counter. She glanced around to check who might be watching her. When it looked like no one was, she quickly followed Marcus. She quickened her pace as she lost sight of him in the swirling mist at the back of the club’s main room. Marcus disappeared.
When she reached where she’d last seen him a shiver spiked up her back. The mist was freezing cold, the air thick with potent. Anna turned away as a weird fear gripped her. She practically ran back to the bar, weaving through the groups of patrons, and muttering, “Sorry,” as she knocked into one, splashed the drink from the glass of another, until she stood in front of Ethan.
His gaze mesmerized her. She wasn’t even sure she actually heard his voice, but somehow he soothed her.
“Anna, it’s time you went home now. You want to go home. You have work to do transcribing the interview with the band. Everything’s fine.”
She smiled at him. “I’m off now. Thank you for answering my questions. Thank Marcus for me. He left.” She gestured toward where she’d run from. A flutter of fear rose in her stomach and then Ethan was leaning forward, his blue eyes capturing her so that she dreamily froze to soak up his low voiced words.
“Goodnight, Anna.”
She left the club happily, a faraway feeling carrying her along …

Excerpt
Looking down at the petrified Josephine, Kieran rationally understood why she was nervous, but he didn’t care. Not one tiny bit.
The woman was an adult, after all. She wasn’t being forced—maybe ‘manipulated’ was the word—into the marriage. To hold back the feeling of pity creeping into his conscience, he remembered the look on her face when she saw his scars at their one meeting before the wedding. The repulsed reaction was just like all those women before her who trembled at his disfiguration, and reminded him that like those vapid bimbos, she was as superficial as them.
It was the main reason he felt little guilt in picking her purely based on looks. She’d been stunning as a sixteen-year-old girl and now six years later, she’d grown into her body and was absolutely beautiful. Her figure was something out of a 1950s pinup: smooth curves and dips, filling out in all the right places. Unbelievably fuckable.
Her skin was porcelain smooth with a few freckles across the bridge of her nose that looked a bit out a place on her alabaster skin yet gave her something unique. But it was her mouth that really killed him: luscious and pink, with a distinct curve along the upper lip that he wanted to lick. They looked permanently swollen and ever since their brief meeting to discuss the prenuptial agreement, he’d spend many a night imagining those lips wrapped around his hard cock. At least that hadn’t been damaged by the landmine.
Josephine’s innocence practically radiated off of her. Her father had informed Kieran that she’d attended a strict boarding school before returning home and now attended college through an online-learning program. Considering her father’s social standing, her isolation seemed suspect, but Kieran didn’t let himself dwell on it too much.
Kieran watched her lips now as she began to speak the words that committed her to the marriage. Committed her to him.
“I-I-I do.” The tremor in her voice was audible.
It was now time to kiss the bride, he heard the priest inform them, and he waited for the moment of revulsion to cross Josephine’s face as she turned to face him, just as it had two weeks ago. But all he saw was slight trepidation as she looked up into his eyes. Her gaze didn’t even wander across his face and onto the scars. She remained looking up at Kieran, focusing intently on his own hazel eyes. Why wasn’t she recoiling?
Irritated by the feelings of confusion her stoic stare caused in him, he wrapped one arm around her waist, whilst grasping the other behind her neck, and firmly pulled her flush against him. Leaning down, he smashed his lips against her perfect mouth. He stiffened as he felt her small hands grasp his biceps.
Kieran expected her to subtly try and push him off her, but inside she melted into his arms. Not only was she not pushing him away, she seemed to be willingly letting him draw her small, soft body against his own. She didn’t even stiffen in his grasp. Her hips pressed against him and as he pulled away from her mouth, he heard a faint sigh escape from her lush lips.
Almost as if she’d enjoyed it.
Aware of their location, he willed himself to step back. He released his wife from his grasp but moved to grasp her hand and turned to walk out of the church. Kieran glanced over at her, amazed to see that a flush had spread across her cheeks and neck. As if she’d relished his touch. No, it was impossible to think that she was anything but repulsed by him. After all, he was a monster.
Nothing more than a beast.
