NEWS: Alexandria Publishing Group Goes Live

Quality matters for these indiesA group of indie authors has declared an intention to take a stand for professionalism in self-publishing with the launch of the Alexandria Publishing Group, writes Mark Cantrell

THE world of indie publishing has often been referred to as the 'Wild West', a kind of hubristic free-for-all where anything goes, but now a small group of author-publishers has decided its time to rise above the fray - and enforce a little quality.

Authors Valerie Douglas and D Kai Wils...

ARTICLE: Scandal Of Forced Labour In UK Food Industry

Towards a very model of 'progressive' employment practiceThe Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) has uncovered evidence of forced labour in the UK's food industry. While this malpractice is surely shocking, Mark Cantrell can't help but wonder if this represents a model for future labour relations...

FORCED labour is alive and thriving in parts of the UK's food industry according to a new report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), which should surely provide some food for thought as we contem...

BLOG: Gift Of The Gab

Talking bollocks with books

THE boss threw the book at me the other day - he made me the literary editor of his new publishing baby, Cheshire Today.

After six years writing about the bleak world of housing, this new line in day job sweat and tears will certainly make for a refreshing change. Of course, my main subject matter isn't averse to throwing me an odd ball every now and again.

Take today, for instance: I certainly didn't go into work expecting to chat with the MoD about missile deploym...

POEM: Tender Mercies

If It Kills Me...
By Mark Cantrell

Success
Is like a horse,
Carefree and wild,
I ride it hard,
I ride it fast
Crying yahoo
As I gallop past.

Success,
Is like a horse,
Mean tempered and wild,
It throws me down to earth,
Kicks my arse,
Leaves me red raw and tender,
Saddle sore and dusty,
But still I climb
To ride for more...

I'll tame the horse yet!

BLOG: Sifting The Sites

Are we nearly there yet?

ONE of the many brainteasers involved in crafting a website isn’t so much about what you decide to put in – but what you decide to leave out.

As the old saying goes, less is more, but faced with the possibilities that modern web design offers, with all its widgets and gadgets and ‘Web 2.0’ interactivity, the tantalising possibilities can dazzle to the point of overload.

That’s the conundrum I’m facing right now, as I put t...

Check out the blog Indies Unlimited for an interview with Mark Cantrell, the author of Citizen Zero. And once you've finished that, you might care to stick around and discover a wealth of indie authoring talent...

Author Mark Cantrell  has been told his writing demonstrates a certain dry humor, a cynical wit, and a tendency towards the darker view of life. While he is at ease with all that, he also feels his work embodies  an underlying optimism,...
