Ծնած է Պոլիս՝ Օտեաններու նշանաւոր գերդաստանին մէջ, կրթութիւնը ստացած է տան մէջ՝ մասնաւոր դասերով, ապա՝ իր հօրեղբօր՝ Գրիգոր Օտեանի շունչին տակ, տիրացած է զարգացման բարձր աստիճանի, շնորհիւ իր հետեւողական ընթերցասիրութեան։ 1879 թուականին հօրեղբօր՝ Գրիգոր Օտեանի նախաձեռնութեամբ, իննամսեայ ուղեւորութիւն մը կը կատարէ Եւրոպայի մէջ՝ Փարիզ, Հռոմ, , Նիաբոլի, եւ այլ քաղաքներ։ Օտեանի անունը թուրքական իշխանութիւններուն համար եղած է «անբարեյոյս անձանց» ցուցակին մէջ։ 1896 թուականի Օգոստոսին, երբ Կ․ Պոլսոյ մէջ կը սկսին հայկական ջարդերը, ան գաղտնի կը հեռանայ այնտեղէն։ Օտեան հեռանալով դէպքերէն եւ Կ.Պոլիսէն, տասներկու տարի կ'ապրի թափառական կեանք մը, շրջելով՝ Աթէնք, Փարիզ, Գահիրէ, Վիէննա, Լոնտոն, Պոմպէյ։
