Learn Korean Ep. 83: “Decide to Do”
Keykat wanted to see snow during the wintertime. Unfortunately, we're in Los Angeles where it doesn't snow. But I have a trick up my sleeve.
This episode will cover how to "decide to do" something using the ~기로 (결정)하다 form.

Korean Rice Cake Soup (떡국)
떡국 (rice cake soup) is eaten commonly in Korea on New Year's Day. It's made obviously with rice cake, but many other vegetables go into it too.
And there are several types of 떡국 you can get. The one I try today is made with 만두 (dumplings), and has beef in it. This type of 떡국 is called 떡만두국 (rice cake and dumplings soup).

Korean RPG: How to Tell the Time & Date
Here's the fourth episode of "Korean RPG," a series for learning quick and easy Korean words and phrases for a variety of situations.
In this week's episode, we'll cover how to tell the date and time.

Billy: 아, 잘 잤다! (a, jal jat-da!)
“Ah, I slept well!”
Billy: 몇 시지? (myeot si-ji?)
“What time is it?”
Billy: 새로운 마을에 왔으니까 시간을 바꿔야겠다. (sae-ro-un ma-eu-re wa-seu-ni-kka si-ga-neul ba-kkwo-ya-get-da.)
“I’m in a new town, so I’d better set my watch.”
Billy: 저기요! 지금 몇 시죠? (jeo-gi-yo! ji-geum myeot si-jyo?)
“Excuse me! What time is it?”
Man: 음…. 9시요! (eum.... a-hop-si-yo!)
“Umm…. 9 o’clock!”
Man: 아니… 아침 9시 2분이요! (a-ni... a-chim a-hop-si i-bun-i-yo!)
“No... 9:02 AM!”
Man: 아마도…. (a-ma-do….)
“Maybe….”
Billy: 오늘이 무슨 요일이죠? (o-neu-ri mu-seun nyo-i-ri-jyo?)
“What day is today?”
Man: 화요일인 거 같아요. (hwa-yo-i-rin geo ga-ta-yo.)
“I think it’s Tuesday.”
Billy: 고맙습니다! (go-map-seum-ni-da!)
“Thank you!”
Lottery Salesman: 곧 경품 추첨이 시작됩니다! (got gyeong-pum chu-cheom-i si-jak-doem-ni-da!)
“We’re about to start the prize raffle!”
Billy: 얼마예요? (eol-ma-ye-yo?)
“How much?”
Lottery Salesman: 천원이요! (cheon-won-i-yo!)
“1,000 Won!”
Billy: 한 장 주세요! (han jang ju-se-yo!)
“I’ll take one!”
Lottery Salesman: 부폐 식사권 당첨자는 53번입니다. (bu-pye sik-sa-gwon dang-cheom-ja-neun o-sip-sam beon-im-ni-da.)
“The winner of the buffet meal coupon is #53.”
Billy: 와~! 당첨됐다! 부폐 식사권! (wa~! dang-cheom-dwaet-da! bu-pye sik-sa-gwon!)
“Wow! I won! A buffet coupon!”
Lottery Salesman: 당첨자 분들은 4시까지 여기로 와 주세요. (dang-cheom-ja bun-deu-reun ne-si-kka-ji yeo-gi-ro wa ju-se-yo.)
“All winners please return here by 4 o’clock.”
Billy: 왜 아무도 없지? (wae a-mu-do eop-ji?)
“Why is nobody here?”
Billy: 4신데…. (ne-sin-de....)
“It’s 4 o’clock.”
Billy: 이런! 뭐야! (i-reon! mwo-ya!)
“Dang! What the?”
Billy: 시계를 잘못 맞췄나 보네…. (si-gye-reul jal-mot mat-chwon-na bo-ne....)
“I guess I set my watch wrong….”
Billy: 아, 배고파! (a, bae-go-pa!)
“Ah, I’m so hungry!”

Learn Hangul (Part 2)
Here's the second episode of the new "Learn Hangul" series - a series designed to help you learn the Korean alphabet from the very beginning to the end.
Part 1 introduced Hangul and talked about the basics.
Part 2 will teach you more of the alphabet, including 5 new consonants, 1 new vowel, and 1 new syllable block.

Smelly Korean Food - Soybean Paste Stew - DOENJANG JJIGAE (된장찌개)
Doenjang Jjigae (된장찌개) is an extremely common Korean stew that you'll find at many restaurants, especially if you're a fan of Korean BBQ.
It's made of soybean paste. But not just any soybean paste. It's made of fermented soybean paste. This means that the beans are left to age - kind of like aging kimchi.
However, while fermenting kimchi gives cabbage its distinctive sour taste, fermenting soybeans creates a smell that can only be described as... well, kind of gross. But it only smells bad before you've tried it! Once you can recognize the smell and have tried it, you'll probably enjoy it. I'd highly recommend giving it a try, and not worrying about the initial smell. You'll soon get over it, as I did.

Here's the third episode of "Korean RPG," a series for learning quick and easy Korean words and phrases for a variety of situations.

Billy: 휴~! 드디어 “고물” 마을에 도착했다. (hyu~! deu-di-eo go-mul ma-eu-re do-chak-aet-da.)
“Phew! I’ve finally arrived at “Gomul” Town.”
Guard: 누구시죠? (nu-gu-si-jyo?)
“Who are you?”
Billy: 안녕하세요! 저는… (an-nyeong-ha-se-yo! jeo-neun)
“Hello! I’m…”
Guard: 이리 따라오시죠. (i-ri tta-ra-o-si-jyo.)
“Follow us.”
Guard: 낯선 사람을 데리고 왔습니다. (nat-seon sa-ra-meul de-ri-go wat-seum-ni-da.)
“We’ve brought a stranger.”
King: 이름이 뭐야? (i-reum-i mwo-ya?)
“What’s your name?”
Billy: 제 이름은 빌리입니다. (je i-reu-meun bil-li-im-ni-da.)
“My name is Billy.”
King: 여기엔 무슨 일로 왔어? (yeo-gi-en mu-seun il-lo wa-seo?)
“What are you here for?”
Billy: 저는 한국어를 가르치는 사람입니다. (jeo-neun han-gu-geo-reul ga-reu-chi-neun sa-ram-im-ni-da.)
“I teach Korean.”
Billy: 여기에 한국어를 배우고 싶어하는 사람이 많다고 들었습니다. (yeo-gi-e han-gu-geo-reul bae-u-go si-peo-ha-neun sa-ram-i man-ta-go deu-reot-seum-ni-da.)
“I heard there are many people here who want to learn Korean.”
King: 그래, 맞아! (geu-rae, ma-ja!)

“Princess, come here!”
King: 내 딸이 요즘 한국어를 공부하고 있어. (nae tta-ri yo-jeum han-gu-geo-reul gong-bu-ha-go i-seo.)
“Lately my daughter is studying Korean.”
Princess: 만나서 반갑습니다. (man-na-seo ban-gap-seum-ni-da.)
“Nice to meet you.”

“I’m 30 years old.”

“Perfect! Let’s start classes right away tomorrow!”

“That’s it for today.”

“Do you have any questions?”
Princess: 드라마는 언제부터 보는 거죠? (deu-ra-ma-neun eon-je-bu-teo bo-neun geo-jyo?)
“So when do we start watching dramas?”
Billy: 지금은 기초적인 것을 먼저 배워야 합니다. (ji-geu-meun gi-cho-jeo-gin geos-eul meon-jeo bae-wo-ya ham-ni-da.)
“For now we need to learn the basics first.”
Princess: 그럼 지금은 K팝으로 공부해요! (geu-reom ji-geu-meun K-pa-beu-ro gong-bu-hae-yo!)
“Then let’s study now with K-pop!”
Billy: 아직 공주님은.... 나중에 다시 얘기하죠. (a-jik gong-ju-ni-meun…. na-jung-e da-si yae-gi-ha-jyo.)
“You’re still.... Let’s talk about it later.”
Princess: 드라마랑 노래로 공부할 거야! (deu-ra-ma-rang no-rae-ro gong-bu-hal geo-ya!)
“I’m gonna learn with dramas and K-pop!”
Princess: 아빠! (a-ppa!)
“Daddy!”
Princess: 빌리가 아직 드라마하고 K팝은 안 된대! (bil-li-ga a-jik deu-ra-ma-ha-go Kpa-beun an doen-dae!)
“Billy says we can’t use drama and K-pop yet!”

Learn Hangul (Part 1)
This week marks the first video in a brand new series that will teach you Hangul (the Korean alphabet) from the very beginning to the end.
Part 1 introduces Hangul and talks about where it came from, why it's important to learn the alphabet, and the basics of how the alphabet works.
In future lessons, we'll cover all of the rest of the alphabet, including all major sound change rules and plenty of practice along the way.

Learn Korean Ep. 82: "Planning to Do"
After staying in Korea for a few weeks, I started to gain a bit of weight. So that means it's time to start exercising. I'd heard about an effective, fun way to exercise and wanted to try it out. Unfortunately, Keykat doesn't seem to want to exercise with me. Not really sure why.
