"Even If" ~더라도 ~ㄹ지라도 | Live Class Abridged

Last Sunday I did a live Korean classroom about the grammar forms ~더라도 and ~ㄹ지라도. Both of these forms mean "even if," and are different than the regular ~아/어/etc. 도 form (for example, 하다 becoming 해도).

The full live stream lasted over an hour, but the abridged version comes in at just under 8 minutes long. Check it out here~!

“Too Bad” 아쉽다, 아깝다, 안타깝다 | Korean FAQ

Do you know these three verbs? 아쉽다, 아깝다, and 안타깝다.

These are three verbs which can often be translated the same way in English, as "too bad." But each of these are used in different situations, so it's important to be able to tell the difference between them.

In this video I give a simple explanation of their differences. Check it out here~!

Important Hanja: “Each” or “Every” 매 (每) (한자) | Korean FAQ

I keep getting asked to make more episodes about Hanja, so this will be another such episode.

Today's lesson is about the Hanja 每, which means "every." Where have you seen this Hanja used before?

Master Politeness Levels with Billy Go | #1: Course Introduction

Ever since finishing my "Beginner Korean Course" last year, I've wanted to make another free course that was for Intermediate and Advanced level learners to help enhance their speaking skills. And in my opinion, the most difficult and time-consuming piece of the Korean language, that especially effects those learners are Politeness Levels. Politeness Levels can take years to master, as they do for native Korean speakers, and are a deep topic that I haven't seen covered in detail anywhere else.

So today is the first episode of this series. The entire series will have 24 episodes, and I'll post one new episode each week as my schedule permits. However, if you're one of the Members of my YouTube channel you can actually watch several more episodes in advance right now, with plans to have the whole series visible to Members before the end of May. This is just an extra benefit to those who are supporting me, but the entire series will be completely free once it's uploaded to my channel.

So check it out here~! The first episode is now on my YouTube channel, and the next one will be up next week.

~만하다 "Worth Doing" | Live Class Abridged

This past Sunday we had a live Korean classroom about the grammar form ~만하다. This form attaches after verbs and means "worth doing," among several other translations. It can attach to both Action Verbs and Descriptive Verbs.

We also learned about a similar-looking form, ~만 하다, which is used to compare the size of things.

A Polite Way to Ask Favors Using 부탁하다 | Korean FAQ

부탁하다 and 부탁드리다 are two commonly used verbs that are a bit tricky to translate, but mean "to request" or "ask for" something. These verbs are used together with nouns to politely request someone to do something. Another way to think of these verbs is to mean "I ask that you" or "I ask for your."

I explain what they mean and how to use them, and give a few examples in this latest Korean FAQ episode, which you can watch right here.

How speaking Korean affects your English (feat. Forrest)

How has speaking Korean affected YOUR Korean? What sorts of things do you say now in English, after having learned some (or more) of the Korean language?

I sat down with my friend Forrest and we talked about some common things that English speakers do after they've started studying Korean, as well as the reasons why we do those.

~고자 "Desiring to Do" | Live Class Abridged

In Sunday's live Korean classroom (which we have almost every Sunday), we most recently learned about the grammar form ~고자 (하다). This form is used to show that someone has the desire to do something, or intends to do something. It's a formal grammar form, and is similar to the (으)려고 form.

The full live stream was about an hour long, but you can learn about this form in just 8 minutes here in the abridged version.

What are Politeness Levels? | Korean FAQ

Politeness Levels are, in my opinion, the largest and most complicated part of learning Korean - more than any other type of grammar. However, like any other type of grammar, they can also be learned and mastered through regular practice and exposure to the language. I actually created a new free 24-episode course called "Master Politeness Levels" which will start being posted April 8th, but before that I wanted to do an overall summary of the politeness levels.

So if you've already learned the basics of how politeness levels work, then this video is for you. I'll summarize how each type of speech is used, and discuss how using each one feels.
