What happens if you use 반말 to a stranger?

Have you ever mistakenly used Casual Speech, when you were supposed to speak politely?

I met with Korean Arah and we discussed what would happen in these situations, as well as why it's important to know the correct way of speaking.

Special thanks again to Korean Arah! Make sure to check out her web site for learning Korean, which I've linked in the video's description.

"Almost" 뻔하다 & 거의 | Live Class Abridged

Most Sundays I offer a free live Korean class through my YouTube channel, and this past Sunday we learned about how to say "almost" or "barely" using the grammar forms ~뻔하다 and 거의.

The full live stream was nearly 2 hours, but just the sentences we covered are only a few minutes. You can watch the summarized version here.

Why the Korean days of the week came from Latin | Korean FAQ

When I was a beginner, I learned the days of the week as everyone else - 일요일, 월요일, 화요일, 수요일, 목요일, 금요일, and 토요일. But I quickly noticed something interesting, like many people; I noticed they seemed to each start with some element.

일 "Sun"

월 "Moon"

화 "Fire"

수 "Water"

목 "Wood"

금 "Gold"

토 "Dirt"

So like anyone else, I concluded that the names of the weekdays must have been based on different elements, and that was that. Right? Well, there's actually a completely different reason for this, and it has to do with the Romans and Latin.

In this video I explain how old weekday names from Latin came into Korean, and how those changed and that Korea uses those today.

My bilingual son and I tried on Hanbok at Gyeongbok Palace (경복궁)

Have you ever visited Gyeongbok Palace? Did you know that if you visit while wearing Hanbok, that it's free entry? It's also free at the other palaces too (just double check on their web site to find what days they're open before you visit).

I brought my son (who's bilingual in English and Korean), and we rented Hanbok to do just that. I'd recommend trying this at least once because it's a fun experience.

Extremely Large Korean Numbers (억, 조, 경, 해…) | Korean FAQ

Most of the time when you're counting things, you can get away with only using 십, 백, 천, and 만. For really large numbers, 억 is your friend (100,000,000). But beyond that, you'll rarely (if ever) find yourself using. However, if you start reading articles about economics, or learn biology, or physics, or mathematics and other fields where you'll need very large numbers, these won't be enough. So let's talk about everything above 억.

In this lesson we'll cover the numbers (all of them), starting with 십, and going up to 백, 천, 만, 억, 조, 경, 해, 자, 양, 구, 간, 정, 재, 극, 항하사, 아승기, 나유타, 불가사의, 무량(대)수, and up to 구골 (googol).

Misconceptions about Busan Dialect | Korean Dialect Interviews (부산 사투리)

Busan dialect is one of the most popular dialects that people learn (right after standard Korean), but there are a lot of common misconceptions about it.

I sat down with Arah from the YouTube channel "Korean Arah" and she shared what makes Busan dialect unique, along with some things people usually get wrong about it.

척하다 & 체하다 "To Pretend" or "To Act Like" | Live Class Abridged

In this past Sunday's live Korean class I taught about the forms 척하다 and 체하다, which mean "to pretend" or "to act like."

The full live stream was over an hour, but the abridged version can be used as a quick way to review the entire lesson.

If you join the live streams, you'll get a chance to interact with the lesson. We usually make sentences together, and you'll have opportunities to practice the concepts that we're learning live.

Master Politeness Levels with Billy Go | #24: Final Notes

This lesson will cover some final notes that wouldn't fit in the rest of the series, as well as some things that are more specific to certain usages but might not be necessary to everyone.

This is the final episode of my 24-part series all about Korean Politeness Levels. How was it? Was there anything else you were curious to know about politeness levels?

And what sort of series would you like to see me tackle next? Let me know in the video comments (or here).

Koreans recommend these places to visit on your next Korea trip | Street Interview

Where would you recommend someone visits in Korea? I have some ideas of my own, but I wanted to ask Koreans what they thought; where would a Korean recommend someone visits the next time they're in Korea?

I went out to the streets in 연남동 and asked Koreans their opinions, and filmed their responses. If you'd like to see more videos like these, let me know!

Master Politeness Levels with Billy Go | #23: Additional Politeness Levels

The final three politeness levels we've yet to talk about are 하소서체, 하오체, and 하게체. These forms are still commonly found, but not in modern-day speech. Instead, you can find them in older materials, as well as Korean historical dramas. So they're really useful to know, but are also large topics on their own so we only have time to briefly introduce them. Be aware of them, but knowing how to create grammar for them is less important (unless you're trying to write a historical drama).

This is lesson 23 out of 24, so next week will be the final episode and will conclude this series.

What series would you like to see next on my channel?
