Why the World Cup Has So much To Offer

Leesa Bow, author of Winning the Player tells why the World Cup has so much to offer…

Jun 20 2014, 11:20am

Which country has the hottest players in the World Cup?

This is a hard one and our Aussie boys are at the top of the list… along with Brazil, Italy, Spain and the USA. But I’d have to go with Brazil although Portugal has the hottest player in the world – Ronaldo!

AFL v Soccer.

I am enjoying the World Cup although I don’t find it as exciting as the AFL. Maybe because I have been raised in a country where there are a lot of goals scored in Aussie Rules Football. And I do become frustrated when no goals are scored and the game ends in a nil all draw.

But I’m not taking anything away from the world’s number one most popular sport with over 3.5 billion fans! I respect the skill of the players, their brilliant footwork, and of course their physique.

Eye candy is something most women want and the World Cup players certainly have much to offer…except most of their bodies are covered by a uniform until they score that all important goal and the tops come off in celebration – yay!

WAGS - Would you want to be one?

There is nothing like sharing the joy of winning with a partner involved with sport and feeling so proud of his achievements. Then there is the glamour and glitz of it all…not to mention the money that some of the elite get paid.

I think I could handle that for a while.

Book Blurb:  Before college, before responsibilities, Hadley Beauman and best friend Lily are determined to have a summer to remember. There will be all the usual dramas – ex-boyfriends who don’t seem to know what ‘ex’ means, pesky younger brothers with unrequited crushes, but what Hadley didn’t anticipate was the out-of-the-blue return of the seriously hot boy-next-door, Will Carson. The boy who broke her heart when he skipped town two years ago. Will may have shot up a foot and filled out (oh yes), but inside he carries the weight of guilt – for leaving, for coming back… Now he’s just passing through to tie up loose ends but it’s clear the old chemistry still crackles between him and Hadley. Trouble is, it’s built on two years of lies… This summer might just be the best time of their lives, but is Hadley ready for everything to change – again?

Write What You Know by Laura Greaves

Write What You Know

By Laura Greaves

Inspiration is a funny thing. It tends to strike when you least expect it (and invariably when you don’t have a pen and paper to hand) and can come from the most surprising places. I never imagined, for example, that a friend’s unplanned pregnancy would lead me to write my first novel, Be My Baby

When I was 22 and living the Aussie-expat-in-London dream, a close friend back home in Australia suddenly found herself expecting a baby. At the time, this was truly shocking. It felt like we were barely out of nappies ourselves, and here was one of us making her own people! What was even more shocking was that my friend asked me to be her unborn daughter’s godmother.

And most astonishing of all was the fact that I said yes.

As an only child myself, I’d never had much to do with babies. And I’m not religious, so the ‘God’ part was a little concerning. I wasn’t sure I’d be any use to my soon-to-arrive godchild. Plus, I was living on the other side of the planet – temporarily, sure, but how much help could I realistically be from 15,000km away?

Authors are lucky in that we get to explore our ‘issues’ on paper. All my worries about my likely ineptitude as a godparent went into Be My Baby’s heroine, Anna, who suddenly finds herself having to care for her best friend Helena’s baby daughter. (Happily, my friend never needed me to look after her little girl; she nailed the whole parenting thing from day one.)

Anna is also wrestling with a Big Decision: does she want children of her own someday or not? This aspect of her character was inspired by my own struggle with the same question (spoiler: I now have a beautiful baby girl!)

My goddaughter is 11 now and about the most precocious, gorgeous and terrifyingly clever kid you could hope to meet. Her mum remains one of my best friends. We’ve never lived in the same state – although we’re at least in the same country now – but I would do anything for either of them in a heartbeat.

Be My Baby is not an autobiographical novel, but it is very personal; the story was definitely inspired by events in my life, and coloured by my own thoughts and feelings as I was writing it. And Anna’s sexy next-door neighbour, Luke, bears a rather uncanny resemblance to my husband…!

 Interview

Welcome Leesa to Turner’s Antics and thank you for stopping by.

Can you please tell us a little about yourself with 5 fun facts?
1. When watching scary or action movies, I’m one of those annoying people who jump at loud noises and no one wants to sit next to me.
2. I am an arachnophobic.
3. In 2012, my family met Natalie Portman. It was an amazing experience.
4. During winter, I wear socks with thongs around the house. It tricks me into believing I’m on holidays J
5. I loathe winter to the point I become whiney.

When did you realise you wanted to be a writer and what was the very first thing you ever wrote?
In 2006 when my daughter was diagnosed with cancer, I jotted down dreams, and my inner thoughts. As you can imagine it was a stressful, and emotional time in my life. One dream turned into a book, and it was then I decided to become a writer. Although I held onto my manuscript until my daughter was in remission.

My first book is a fantasy romance, which I hope to revisit later in the year. {I hope your daughter is still well!}

In one sentence, can you tell the readers why they should read your book?
If you love sport or romance then my story is perfect, as it’s a mix of both adding tension and heart warming moments in one package.

Do you have a favourite non-spoilery scene or quote from Winning the Player?
Oh, there are many favourites. For me Aubree’s grandmother is a source of inspiration and I love her wisdom. There is a particular scene where she is giving Aubree advice on love.

“Remember your choices have consequences so learn from the past, appreciate the present, and without fear embrace the future.”

I think that’s a great piece of advice for everyone. {Very true, a fantastic quote to choose.}

What’s next after the Winning the Player and when is it due to be released?
My next New Adult book is Charming the Outback. It’s Maddy and Luke’s story and is based in a small country town. {Awesome I cannot wait to read their story}

What’s one piece of technology you cannot live without?
Oh that’s a tough one. I would have to say my iPhone, although my Kindle and laptop are also top of my list. {Oh, those are top of mine also.}

When you are writing, do you have a set routine that gets you started or just go with the flow?
Ideas stream best in the morning. I usually write on days off when I’m relaxed, and since I’m a pantser, it’s go with a flow. Music can also help me find a certain mood.

QUICK DRAW!
Tea, coffee or hot chocolate? Coffee
Ice cream or cheeses? Cheese
Cats or dogs? Dogs
Day or night? Night
EBooks or paperbacks? EBook.
Favourite all time book? Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

About the Author

Leesa BowLeesa Bow grew up in Broken Hill. Sport played a major role in her life growing up in a small country town, and Leesa had a passion for basketball. Although she loved to read books with happy endings, she never believed she would end up a novelist.

Leesa started her professional life nursing at the local hospital before moving to Adelaide in her early twenties. She married a football player, and inevitably her four daughters were also sporty. Leesa began writing seriously when her second daughter became sick with cancer. Initially writing was therapeutic, but when her daughter got the all clear, she decided to continue writing seriously. Stories about sport, romance, and characters aged eighteen plus seemed logical since her daughters were of a similar age, and often surrounded by athletes.

Leesa now works in merchandising and in her spare time writes New Adult romance. On weekends she enjoys watching basketball and football, having beach days with the family, catching up with girlfriends, and daydreaming about strong heroines.
