Saam Medical Meditation’s ‘Organ Centered Consciousness’ And The Brain In Consideration Of Consciousness.

Saam MedicalMeditation’s ‘Organ Centered Consciousness’ and the brain in consideration of consciousness.
Evan Mahoney
Abstract:
Saam Medical Medtation’s ‘Organ Centered ConsciousnessModel’ is derived from the Five Element Theory of Acupuncture Medicine, whichis the basis of the Korean Traditional Acupuncture Technique known as SaamAcupuncture. Saam Medical Meditation’s(SMM) Organ Centered Consciousness de-emphasizes the brain as the central roleor foundation of our understanding of consciousness. This can help explain thecontinued experience of consciousness during clinical death.

The Five Element Theory of Acupuncture Medicineascribes specific patterns, attributes, and characteristics to individualorgans. This includes natural elements, channel pathways, pathological factors, colors, tastes, smells, emotions, seasonal and daily cycles, tissues, sensory organs, etc.

Figure 1
The five organs Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lungs, and Kidneysare Yin organs, they are matched with the Yang equivalent organs in row three. The pathological factors are listed in rowfour (Mahoney, 2017)
The Five Elements are fundamental theories ofAcupuncture Medicine. This is the theorywhich the first year acupuncture student immerse themselves in. This is the introduction to ‘Organ CenteredConsciousness’, where one begins to witness these organ specific patterns inoneself.
Saam Medical Meditation (SMM) organizes on the themeof Organ Centered Consciousness according to four branches. The first is as described above of one’s ownimmersion and self- experience of the Five Element Patterns in self.
The second branch is according to the example of PTSD,which SMM considers to be a conscious pathology specifically affecting the Kidneys. Per the Five Elements the emotion of Fear isascribed to the Kidneys. Traditionallywater (the element of Kidney) has connotations of danger. In Western Medicine the ‘Fight or FlightResponse’ when faced with a dangerous situation triggers the release of adrenalinefrom the adrenal glands which sit atop the Kidneys. In SMM’s ‘Organ Centered Consciousness Model’we recognize fear as a physical disease residing in the Kidneys and not in theHead. Per the treatment we have thepatient meditate on the Kidneys and its Harmonized Channel the San Jaio toexpel the conscious pathology of PTSD out of the mind and body.
The third branch of SMM ‘Organ Centered Consciousness’ is thecounterpart to conscious pathology, which is unconscious pathology recognized by Dr. John Sarno’s‘Unconscious Rage’. This is characterized in high achieving, successful,do-gooding people who take on a lot of responsibilities to further their life’sgoals, but have an unconscious rebellion against such responsibilities. This theory of Dr. Sarno’s corresponds toSaam Acupuncture’s Gall Bladder pathology where one may experience‘Revolutionary Rage’ at one’s political powerlessness against perceivedinjustices. This also includes angergenerated from close intractable stressful relationships whether it is betweenspouses, co-workers, neighbors, etc. This Unconscious Pathology of rage and anger is expelled using SMM’sHeart / Gall Bladder technique.
The fourth branch of SMM ‘Organ CenteredConsciousness’ is The Interpretation of Dreams according to Saam Acupuncture’sThree Levels of Human Needs which is not discussed here (Mahoney, 2017)

Figure 2
In the article “Treating Grief with Saam Acupuncture /Meditation” the author wrote about channeling the energetic emotion of grief tothe point prescriptions of the Lung / Urinary Bladder channels. This is atreatment derived from Five Element Theory which recognizes grief or sadness asa pathology of the Lungs. ‘OrganCentered Consciousness’ channels grief so that it does not become a respiratorypathological disease.
SMM’s ‘Organ Centered Consciousness’ de-emphasizes thebrains role as the foundation of consciousness, which in the opinion of theauthor is often taken as the de-facto position of Western Medicine. SMM recognizes the brain’s obvious criticalrole in life and the integration of the brain with the Organs and Five ElementTheory. In other words neither the brainnor the organs are stand-alone foundations of consciousness.
The author has been considering this in cases of NearDeath Experiences, where a person has been deemed clinically dead, but laterrevived with memories of after life experiences. In Acupuncture Medicine Theory there are twosouls, a Corporal Soul which lives and dies at first and last breath and isrooted in the Lungs (hence sadness, grief). The Ethereal soul is rooted in the Liver and is considered theeternal.
The article by Cornide – Petronio, et al. suggest thatLiver tissue can remain undamaged several hours after Brain Death. “Once thediagnosis of BD was established, the dog was monitored for 16 h before theliver was removed… As reflected by the hepatic enzyme release during the courseof BD, no evidence of deterioration of function in livers retrieved from BDdonors was found” (Eugenia, et al, 2018)
Cases of Near Death Experiences challengeunderstanding of what is ‘consciousness’ as well as the brain’s role in consciousness, becausethey occur when the patient has been pronounced clinically dead, without brainfunction.
Dr. BruceGreyson of the University of Virginia School of Medicine says, “These featuresand the occurrence of heightened mental functioning when the brain is severelyimpaired, such as under general anesthesia and in cardiac arrest, challenge thecommon assumption in neuroscience that consciousness is solely the product ofbrain processes, or that the mind is merely the subjective concomitant ofneurological events” (Magis Center, 2022)
Perunderstanding of acupuncture theory with Near Death Experience this wouldsuggest that the immortal soul is tethered somewhat to the Liver, which enablesconsciousness to function in spite of clinical death.
Conclusion:
Cases of NearDeath Experience where examples of consciousness remain in spite of absence ofbrain function, challenge the notion of the brain’s central role ofconsciousness. Acupuncture Theory andSaam Medical Meditation’s “Organ Centered Consciousness” offer an integrativeexplanation of consciousness. This canbe witnessed through self – experience of the Five Element Theory and canexplain partly the continuing role of consciousness after death. As with the goal of Acupuncture Theory ingeneral, the understanding of these things can lead to one’s fullest achievementof both physical and spiritual health.
