Publisher Spotlight - Love is Love

Bottom Drawer Publications Showcase
Love is . . . love
As a romance publisher, we love LOVE! To us, love is love, and it is a beautiful thing, whether it’s between a man and a woman, a man and a man, a woman and a woman . . . or a combination involving a delicious mix of 3 or more. It was so important for us when we started this publishing business that we didn’t split out and categorise separately our LGBT romances. You will find LGBT romance scattered pretty much equally with het romances across all of our genres. To us the key to our business is romance—whether it be sweet or spicy or erotic—but always with a great story attached.
Our characters find love on holiday, meet up with their first loves, find strength and passion while dealing with diversity, and sometimes they fight alongside the loves of their lives as they battle rebel forces in a dystopian world. But the key ingredient is love not gender.

The GroomWhen Lyle Cummings is left standing at the altar on his wedding day, all of his carefully composed plans for the future come crashing down around him. The pragmatic doctor is left questioning his well-ordered existence and wondering if there isn't more to life than the achievements of wealth and career.
When he meets Katrina Giordano, a fiery lounge singer with more passion in her pinky finger than he possesses in his entire body, his mundane life is turned upside down. In Katrina, he finds everything his life has been lacking. With her, he will learn that what he thought was love really wasn't at all.
But will Katrina's dark past threaten the happiness that Lyle has found after so much heartache? With her life, and now his, hanging in the balance, Lyle will find himself tested when it comes to how far he will go for love.

I’m Your ManWhen Ruth Jones wakes up one morning suffering from a major hangover, she realises she’s not in her London apartment but in the hotel where last night’s work function had been held. The last thing she remembers is sitting at the hotel bar next to an average-looking guy with a nice accent and large hands, and wondering just what those hands could do given half the chance. When the bathroom door opens and Mr. Average walks out, she realises that at the ripe old age of thirty-three, she has experienced her first one-night stand. A one-night stand that is about to send her world into utter turmoil. The problem: her boyfriend Justin. He’s handsome, has a killer body and the sex is awesome—and he would be perfect if only he didn’t keep standing her up whenever she needed him.

Mythica

Caiden Jones is part-selkie and lives an idyllic life by the sea in South Australia. He’s had his fair share of disappointments, like being kept out of the Navy due to his mythica status, but overall he’s got a pretty good life. Until he’s in the wrong place at the right time.
Cai steps in to subdue an out-of-control minotaur and in the process suffers a serious injury to his ribs. As Cai struggles to breathe, a gorgeous suit-clad sy’lph with mesmerising blue eyes races to his rescue. When it’s learned that the minotaur was poisoned, the sy’lph, Gray, makes it his personal mission to keep Cai and his family safe.
Cai has always harboured some resentment towards the sy’lph because of their easy acceptance into the community, so the attraction he feels for Gray takes him by surprise. But how can they find out what this might mean when the lives of Cai and his family are endangered by someone closer than they realise?

Stealing Serenity
Serenity, a photograph worth four million dollars, was sold at auction to an anonymous bidder, and stealing it will represent the largest payday Daniel will have ever had. To make that happen, he poses as a photography curator to attract the attention of Kearin, the auction house owner.
Kearin takes Daniel under his wing to work in the non-profit branch of his business, but it’s a cover for his desire to see Daniel naked, bound, and needy for the camera. Kearin has a client interested in a very specific portfolio—filling the request would put him at the top of his field. Daniel thinks he can use the modeling to get closer to Serenity. What he doesn't expect is to fall for Kearin's brand of intensity instead. So does he go for the photograph or Kearin's heart? He wouldn't call himself a master thief if he couldn't steal both.

“Irwin deftly creates the modern real world as well as the fantasy one.” Bruce E. Arrington - Author
“This is a faced paced book with no dull moments and I am really looking forward to the next in the series... well done Michelle on a fantastic Debut!” Jenny Schwartz - Author

Evie Meyers’ life is one spent on the run. Every minute of every day, her life is in danger if anyone should suspect the truth about her ancestry. Her father was willing to risk everything to keep the truth hidden, even from her, but the lies he fabricated were exposed when her high school crush, Clay Jacobs, inadvertently stumbled upon her secret. His discovery puts Evie at risk from a secret organization tasked with washing the world clean of nonhumans—and Clay is one of its deadliest soldiers. Forced into a war she doesn’t understand, all because of what she is, Evie is left with no choice but to flee with her father to escape persecution.
When Clay reappears in her life, battle scarred and mysterious, Evie is unprepared and terrified as he forces his way back into her heart. When the battle catches up with her, and a tragic accident tears apart the peace she discovered, she finds herself alone and without the protection of her father, or her lover. Besieged by Rain(Book One – Son of Rain series)Michelle Irwin
Bottom Drawer Publications is proud to provide a cover reveal for Besieged by Rain, book one in the New Adult Paranormal series, Son of Rain, by Michelle Irwin.

The Son of Rain series is a companion series (of sorts) to the Daughter of Fire series featuring Evie Meyers. We say of sorts because Clay’s story, albeit partly told in Evie’s books, is so much bigger. This is not simply a retelling of the story from Clay’s perspective. Clay lives a whole other life that Evie only gets a glimpse of when their story unfolds.

Clay Jacobs is a soldier. His family—elite members of a secret organization—are tasked with washing the world clean of all supernatural threats. Each new day brings the opportunity to fight at their side for a cause that he’s never doubted is just.‏
But Clay harbors a dangerous secret. The object of his teenage obsession was not human, and he failed to detect the truth until it was too late to destroy her. Even after she fled, he couldn't bring himself to report her. Now, the memory of the one who got away not only haunts him, it holds him captive and assaults him nightly. Unable to escape her hold on his mind, he races across the country to locate her and restore his sanity. Only instead of the monster he expects, he finds a woman who ensnares him with her charms. In her embrace, Clay dares to imagine a different life.
When his family discovers his betrayal, and threaten to destroy his dreams in the worst way imaginable, Clay has no option but to return to their side and convince them he’s back on the right track. Will he be able to play his part convincingly when the cause he’s spent most of his life fighting for is the very thing that will end his lover’s life?

Let's Talk About Sex Redux

So a few weeks back (my gosh Christmas was crazy wasn't it?), I did a post about sex. In particular the acceptable number partners for girls versus the acceptable number of partners for boys, and the double standards therein.

Today, I'm going to talk about something slightly different. Sex in books.

I've seen a lot of conversations happening at the moment on Facebook about a book with too much sex, or not enough sex, clean versus erotica, and everyone has a steadfast opinion on it. The thing is, everyone is right. There is too much, or not enough, purely depending on the preferences of the reader.

Like many things in life, I come somewhere in the middle. I don't particularly enjoy books full of sex for he sake of it, but that doesn't mean I think less of anyone who does. I don't mind if there are sex scenes though either. I don't need something completely clean. For me, the driving factor in it all is the plot. If the plot warrants sex, I'm happy to read a sex scene. If there is a highly emotional scene where emotions of any kind will help the sanity of the characters, I'm happy for that emotion to come from sex. If the two characters are in the middle of a deadly serious murder investigation where one of them is being stalked by the killer and they take a few hours to explore one another's bodies . . . hmmm not so much.

That said, that is entirely my preference. I know others who love erotica, and prefer books that don't let their plots get in the way of good sex. Which is totally fine too.

It comes back to the same simple premise I try to live my life by, read what you want, read what you enjoy, don't judge others on what they like, and don't let others judge you for your preference.

Let's Talk About Sex

Please note: This isn't a rant. It isn't a negative statement on anything. It is something I wanted to talk about after a few notes I've seen on reviews of Through the Fire, and that had been raised in conversations. It's not directed at any one person or any specific review. It's just an observation and a something to ponder.

Also, please note: There might be spoilers ahead for Through the Fire. If you haven't read it, want to read it, and don't want to be spoilered, please turn away now. In fact, I'll even break out my meme again just so that you are extra warned.

Now that's out of the way, shall we talk about sex. More specifically, sex with multiple partners (No, not all at once! Yes I'm looking at you. I know exactly where your mind went).

In a few reviews and conversations about Through the Fire, I've noticed a trend. A number of people have hinted that they weren't happy with Evie having more than one sexual partner over the course of the book. And I get that, I do. There is something a little romantic about finding 'the one and only' and having things work from there and they are your literal one and only. It was very clear to me very early though that Evie wasn't going to be the sort of girl to wait around forever for 'the one and only', especially when she's scared and vulnerable, and seeking love and acceptance. I'm sure there are many people who've made similar, and worse, decisions in that frame of mind.

To be honest, I didn't know how it was all going to go down, I rarely do when I start writing, but it was very clear early on that Clay wasn't going to be the one to claim her virginity. I think, given the circumstances, he would have been a bit of a douche if he had. I mean, just think about it . . . before events he would have been giving her a less than stellar surroundings for it and after events, well if he'd done that and left he would have deserved a junk-punch. But that's neither here nor there--I have a different point to make with this post.

Okay, so what is my point then?

It's this: not one review has mentioned that they wish Clay had saved himself for Evie. He made it quite clear in a certain scene that he's had other partners too, but no one seems to mind that. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is my point. That's what I wanted to raise and discuss: why the double standard?

The thing is, this isn't something unique to my books or my reviews. How many countless books are there where the hero is an unapologetic manwhore and the woman is the virginal beauty just waiting to tame him with her patient love and understanding. All of which almost immediately turns him from from his womanising ways. It very rarely happens the other way around. I've seen it a few times, but it's definitely the exception rather than the rule.

I don't know what this says about authors, book readers, or even the community at large. Maybe nothing. Maybe everything. It's certainly something to ponder though, isn't it?

Totally (Para)normal

Originally posted as a guest post on Books All things paranormal and romance
Totally (Para)normal
I write paranormal romance, verging on urban fantasy. It is unabashedly the genre which I feel most at home in, both as a reader and as a writer. I think the biggest reason for this is that I am a big lover of fantasy at heart. I can't define exactly what it is about it that draws me in, but I think it's the same thing that led me to drama as a child. The idea of something bigger and better, waiting out there, just beyond the rainbow or out of reach. It's a world where the biggest problems aren't what the bully in class might do today, whether you'll be late for work, or where the next mortgage payment is going to come from. The sort of place where dragons can roam, people are more than just people, and fae abound. A place of heros and heroines, who take turns to rescue one another both physically and emotionally. It's somewhere where the drudgery of a regular, normal, day to day life disappears between the cracks in the pavement as danger and intrigue take hold. This is the sort of world I like to imagine, and is the setting which bleeds through into my stories.
The world the characters live in is this world, our world, but different. Better in some ways, worse in others. It's not an epic Lord of the Rings scale fantasy (not that there is anything wrong with that), the setting is more urban. It is now. One thing I always strive for is an undercurrent of realism, that these creatures *could* be roaming in your backyard; if only you knew where to look and exactly what you were looking for. That the flash you saw in the corner of your eye wasn't just your imagination but something watching you . . . following you. Maybe something is lurking there to protect you, or maybe its intent is somewhat more nefarious. There's no way of knowing until the story is explored in greater depth.
I believe keeping the underlying question of "what if these creatures were real" in my head with every turn is a big part of what helps infuse realism into my stories. It's thinking through the logic of exactly how, for example, the fae world might interact with our own. Does it operate on it's own plane of existence, and if so, how can we access it when we need to? It's looking at the many stories and folktales that exist about a particular paranormal creature and trying to extract the "real" elements of that. I don't want some giant, three-headed beast in a story unless that three-headed beast is able to exist, at least hypothetically, within the laws of our world. It still allows for a wide scope of what might be. Sometimes it just requires putting on your thinking cap to work out how. And that's the fun part.

I'm Your Man Blog Tour

I’m Your ManJoanne Rawson
Blog Tour December 8-14, 2014

Bottom Drawer is proud to present I’m Your Man by Joanne Rawson, a rising star in the chick lit genre.
Book Details: NovellaGenre: Contemporary Chick LitAuthor: Joanne Rawson
Summary
Ruth Jones loves her boyfriend Justin. He is handsome, has a killer body, and the sex is awesome. He does have one major fault though. He travels so much with work that she only gets to see him once or twice a week, and that is his reasoning for always wanting to . . . stay in. At first she’s happy that he only wants to be with her, but over time, his habit of jibbing out at the last minute for every family occasion, work function, or any bloody occasion that involves socialising, really does her head in. All she wants, for goodness sake, is for people to get to know her boyfriend. Okay, so she wants them to see she has a hunk of a boyfriend, but is that so wrong?
When Ruth wakes up in a hotel room one morning suffering from a major hangover, she tries to piece the events of the previous night together. Feeling let down by yet another no-show by Justin at a work function, she headed to the bar and ordered a drink. The last thing she remembers is sitting next to an average-looking guy with a nice accent and large hands, and wondering just what those hands could do given half the chance. When the bathroom door opens and Mr. Average walks out, she realises that at the ripe old age of thirty-three, Ruth Jones has experienced her first one-night stand.
A one-night stand that is about to send her world into utter turmoil.

Author Interview
How long have you been writing? Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?
My first attempt at public writing was a competition at school when I was about eight or nine with John Miller my next-door neighbour, we wrote a funny short story that won us a Magpie badge. (Magpie was a 70’s kids programme).
While most girls wanted to be Farrah Fawcett, or marry Donny Osmond, I on the other hand wanted to be Enid Blyton. I always had my nose stuck in a book, and dreamed that one day when I was older I would be an author.
However, I had more important things going on in my life. Studying, dreaming of the boy in the sixth form who drove a motorbike, college, marathon dating. Work, dating a string of no-hopeful men, work, falling in love, work, marriage and work.  Before I knew it, I was thirty-nine. Then my husband and I shocked our family and friends by taking early retirement. People asked me how I was going to spend my time. I just knew this was the right time to put my dream into a reality. It took me eighteen months to write and get my first book published. Now I have an Australian and American publisher, and ten published books. I wouldn’t say I have achieved my goal just yet; there still is a lot of work ahead.
What inspires you in your writing?
I have no idea where my inspiration comes from. I have a weird technique that involves playing scrabble while listening to music and drinking wine with my hubbie, I hear a song and something in my head sparks a character, a book title, or a plot for a story, so I grab my notebook and jot down my ideas. It’s surprising what you can achieve after a few glasses of Blossom Hill. (Should have had a few glasses before I did this interview!)

I am also a very nosey person, I love to people watch, this is a great way to build up characters, and yes, I admit I have an awful habit of listening to people’s conversations. Rude I know, but you would not believe what useful information you pick up. So, be warned, if you are ever at a table near me, I may be using you in my next book!
Do you have a favourite place to write?
I used to write at the kitchen table, not really an ideal place, but now I have converted our spare bedroom into an office. From October to April, my husband and I spend a lot of time in South Goa, and I find sitting outside a bamboo hut, looking at the sea and sand inspirational.
Music while you write, yes or no?
Yes!
What is your current favourite book? Or if you can’t name just one, what was your last five-star read?
The Lady Killer by Martina ColePart of the DI Kate Burrows storiesAlso, Peter Kay.He is without doubt the funniest British comedian and talented writer. He has a fantastic ability at observing people, and making it hilarious.  Ideally, we would combine his skills of witty observations and my romance, to create an awesome romantic comedy film!
Tell me a little about I’m Your Man.
It all started one Friday night, Scrabble and Music night in the Rawson House.
A bottle of wine, a game of scrabble and Michael Buble crooning, when all of a sudden I started to listen to the words of I’m Your Man, and it suddenly struck me, this is what Danny wanted to say to Ruth, but couldn’t.

If you want a lover
I'll do anything you ask me to
And if you want another kind of love
I'll wear a mask for you
And if you want a partner, take my hand
And if you want to strike me down in anger
Here I stand, I'm your man
And if you want boxer
I will step into the ring for you
And if you want a doctor
I'll examine every inch of you
And if you want a driver, climb inside
If you want to take me for a ride
You know you can 'cause I'm your man
And if you got to sleep a moment on the road
I will steer for you
And if you want to work this street alone
I'll disappear for you
And if you want a father for your child
Or only want to walk with me a while
'Cross the sands, well, I'm your man
I've called at your heart
And I tear at your sheets
I said please, 'cause I'm your man, I'm your man
'Cause I'm your man

Scenes Inspired from the song.

Danny pulled me off the bed, apologising profusely to the sales assistant. “That’s great news, but he’s not going tonight, is he?”My moment of elation plummeted to the floor like a skydiver with no parachute. “No. Jenny was right, sure as eggs are eggs, I’ll be dateless.”Why did people always have to spoil things by being right? Why couldn’t I frigging well be right for once?“I’m your man. I’ll come with you tonight.”“Oh no, Danny, I couldn’t expect you to give up your plans. You’re meeting colleagues from work.”“Shush... it’s a totally selfish gesture.”~~~“Thank you, Danny, for being my man.”“Anytime you want me to be your man, all you have to do is call.”Once again, our lips met, this time lasting longer, he broke away slightly. “I should go.” I nodded. “Can I call you in the morning, perhaps meet for breakfast and a walk in the park?”“Yes, that would be nice.”He kissed me one last time before walking away. Before he reached the taxi though he stopped and turned. “Still just friends?”I smiled, but inside my heart I was aching. “Yes, just friends.”

The karaoke Scene:
In this scene, there could only be one song, Mustang Sally by The Commitments. A classic Karaoke song that after a few beers all men think they can sing perfectly. Once that music starts up, people cannot help clapping, singing and dancing along, regardless of how bad the singer is.
The intro to “Mustang Sally” boomed from the speakers. Vikki and Jenny shrieked, clapping their hands, boogying to the beat of the music.Joining in, I moved closer into the room, tentatively clapping my hands, feeling certain Luke had pushed Danny to make him look like a fool, and that Danny may have bitten off more than he could chew.

What’s one thing you want people to know about the book?
I’m your Man has romance, comedy, and a heroine that my readers will be able to relate to in some form or another. Ruth is like every woman in this day and age, she is in a relationship but he is always getting out of things that are important to her. Then after one crazy, drunk night, she has a one night stand with a complete stranger, her entire way of thinking about her relationship and her life turn upside down.  How many of you can relate to that?
Describe the main character in three words.
Realistic, romantic, enchanting.

Interview and Release Day Information - Brenda Cheers

Interview How long have you been writing? Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?I published my first picture book at age five. I was the author, illustrator, editor and publisher. I even stapled the spine perfectly. It was the story of a car. It possessed human feelings. Yes, I always knew I’d be a writer, but there were obstacles—children, career, etc. Several years ago I experienced an epiphany.  As a result I changed my life to accommodate what I’d always wanted to do. I undertook a course in creative writing and followed that with an advanced course.  I haven’t stopped writing since. What inspires you in your writing? A scene will come to me. I’ll see it in great detail. This is usually the opening of the book and the story flows from there. I am usually astonished and delighted by how the plot unfolds.Do you have a favourite place to write? No, just a practical one, which is my desk with laptop and a separate monitor. I also have a tablet at hand. With all this technology I can flick from screen to screen and move information around. The romantic notion of fine paper and flowing fountain pen only works when I’m composing difficult scenes and need intense concentration.Music while you write, yes or no? Only to block out noise, if necessary. What is your current favourite book? Or if you can’t name just one, what was your last five-star read? When Richard Flanagan’s “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” was first released, I downloaded a sample, read a page or two and didn’t buy it. The Man Booker prize announcement made me rethink that decision. I was at Tullarmarine Airport, about to board a flight for Brisbane. I downloaded the book within minutes of hearing of the award and began reading it on the flight.  Wow. I was totally captivated. It is some of the best writing I’ve had the joy of reading in years. Tell me a little about The Secret Life of Julia Hawke. Redemption is always an interesting theme. Julia Hawke finds herself in a position where she must fight to win back the affections of those she loves. She has to redeem her reputation. That’s hard when she has so much to hide. The bond between women is also fascinating. It can be an unequal relationship which causes hurt to one of the people involved. The friendship between Julia and Rachel is examined closely in this book. I wish I could experience the unconditional friendship of someone like Rachel. What’s one thing you want people to know about the book? The first draft was darker and very edgy in parts. Two of my trusted beta-readers said it went too far. I used the Stephen King method--taking notice if more than one person gives the same feedback. I rewrote four chapters. Describe the main character in three words. Naïve, spoiled, maturing.
Biography: Brenda Cheers is a novelist living in Brisbane Australia. Raised on a flat and windy farm in rural Victoria, where rain fell 24/7/365 (or so it seemed to her), and where there was no public transport, Brenda soon found that survival from a ‘death by boredom’ lay in books, which she began devouring at a great rate. This was quickly followed by writing in many forms. Long letters, diaries and short stories were her main outlets at that time.As a young woman, Brenda escaped the rural existence and moved to a suburb of Melbourne.  After twelve months she migrated to the warmth of the Sunshine Coast of Queensland.A combination of motherhood and hard work curtailed her writing efforts for a few years. Eventually the itch to write became too much and she undertook classes in creative writing. She had written several novels before the first was published. “In a House in Yemen” was printed in 2013 and this was quickly followed by “In Times of Trouble”.  Both these stories are action-packed suspense thrillers. Both feature strong-willed female protagonists.“In Conversations with Strangers” was next off the presses. This was a breakthrough into literary fiction which has since earned critical acclaim. In it, Janine arrives home unexpectedly one day to find something so shocking that it propels her on a road-trip across Australia. During this journey we find out about Janine and the extraordinary forces that have shaped her.“In Strange Worlds” was published in February 2014. The protagonist, Meg, wakes to find that everybody else has died in their sleep. What does she do? How does she feel? Where does she go? This is an enthralling story and many readers have complained that it is too hard to put down.Brenda is now living in Brisbane with her partner and daughters. She is currently drafting the third installment in the “Strange Worlds” series.

Blurb:Julia Hawke and her friend Rachel are celebrating the end of their final year of schooling. They deceive their parents and embark on an adventure to the Gold Coast of Queensland. Many years later, Julia is still keeping secrets in an attempt to hide what happened during those few, fateful days. A series of events force her to realise that keeping these secrets comes at too great a cost. What can Julia do to regain the trust of those she loves? “The Secrets of Julia Hawke” explores, not only the destructive nature of secrets, but also the miracle of unconditional friendship.
