Ghosts and ghostings in haunted Virginia

(748 words)

Ghosting is the act of deliberately departing a social event or relationship without informing friends or your partner.

Cherlize Theron was recently in the news for ghosting from Sean Penn. No message. No explanation. After a nearly year-long love affair, she just split.

It was very cold, yes, and I’m always saddened anytime celebrity love dissipates, but Penn’s been such a

What you need to do to earn blog name mention

(676 words)

I’m observing a new phenomenon that leads me to believe the blog is either succeeding or that reader perspectives have lurched into realms of the absurd.

Lots of people want me to mention their names in the blog.

They tell me they think that would be cool.

By this, I must infer they mean it would make them cool.

They are mistaken.

I know this because my blog everyday

Who can help me quit caring so much?

(605 words)

I wonder if caring too much is going to kill me.

I care so much about so much.

Do you care that I care?

I care whether you do or do not.

I care the bees are disappearing. I read all the stories that say the bees are like the canaries in mines. Once they go, that’s it. We’re toast.

I care that prior to sensitive air monitoring systems many innocent canaries in mines were

Who'll take on Trump & what Cher has to do with it

(687 words)

I first spoke to Donald Trump in the early 1990s. I remember word-for-word our entire conversation.

Trump: “This is Donald Trump calling for Wayne Castleman.”

Me: “Hold, please.”

I think we had that exact same conversation about four or five times over the next week. I remember thinking each time how ironic it was for me to be transferring a call from a man who lived in a

I'm lovin' cornhole! Who wants to join me?

(630 words)

Due to changing definitions of the pastime, I’m about to make an announcement about which I’m still just a bit sheepish.

Here goes . . .

I’m becoming a cornholer!

I’m into it. I spend about 30 minutes or so each day cornholing. I anticipate I’ll soon become a better cornholer and if you ever want to spend an hour or so cornholing with me just give me a call.

I’m

Seven Dirty Words & Buddy "No. 6" Guy

(926 words)

I don’t know why I feel compelled to defend amplified profanity at the Pittsburgh Blues Festival in a forum that is the blog equivalent of the “Peanuts” comic strip.

We're both innocuous, family-friendly and never resort to profanity.

So the key difference is that “Peanuts” earns millions while this blog earns peanuts.

The closest I get to "going blue" is when I remind

RRS: "The summer I ran away with the carnival"

Seeing advertisements for area county fairs always reminds me of the summer my buddy Doug persuaded me to run away with him and the carnival. What a rich experience. So many memories, so many lessons.

So many corn dogs.

(1,058 words)

We were in the midst of the gaudy sensory overload known as the Westmoreland County Fair when my wife surprised me with a career suggestion.

She

What good is Twitter? Dunno. But here're my monthly best!

After quarterly reports disappointed, Twitter CFO Anthony Noto said a nimble explanation of what Twitter does or why anyone needs it remains elusive. I’ve tweeted 4,685 times and I have no idea either. Still, I enjoy twitter and the platform eliminates the need for me to write all this stuff on some dingy bathroom wall, the otherwise logical destination for these sort of things.

Cecil the Lion & my ever-diminishing regard for dentists

(923 words)

So many questions in the wake of the murder of Cecil the Lion: What’s a fitting punishment? Will the U.S. extradite? Does Walter Palmer have a soul?

Mine is more down-to-earth.

Just how much does a Minnesota filling cost?

It must be exorbitant. How else could Palmer, 55, afford to jet around the world killing endangered beasts that make the rest of us go, “Ahhhh …”

Killing the Mockingbird: A publishing industry lament

(799 word)

I’ve had a number of people ask me if I’m going to read Harper Lee’s newly released 1957 novel “Go Set a Watchman.”

I will not.

Reading belatedly that Atticus Finch hates blacks would have the same effect on me as watching a newly released “Lone Ranger” program and seeing the Masked Man say his horse Silver sucks.

Lee, 89, is now the author of books that will be
