Lord of Wonder (Psalm 26)
Two questions to think on as we pray this psalm today:What inspires awe and wonder in your heart, mind, and soul? What moves your body to worship the Lord?
Psalms 22-30 are referred to as the Passion Psalms and are commonly read and prayed regularly during the Lent season. Psalm 22 is usually reserved for Holy Week (Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday).
Each week of Lent I am exploring one of the Passion Psalms as a prayer that can help you and I prepare our hearts to worship the sacrificed Lam...

Lord of Mercy (Psalm 25)
I need mercy. Right now, in this place. Do you feel it, too?
Psalms 22-30 are referred to as the Passion Psalms and are commonly read and prayed regularly during the Lent season. Psalm 22 is usually reserved for Holy Week (Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday).
Each week of Lent I am exploring one of the Passion Psalms as a prayer that can help you and I prepare our hearts to worship the sacrificed Lamb of God who rose victorious over sin, Satan, and death.
Today we pray Psalm 25 and reflect on...

Lord of Glory (Psalm 24)
Psalms 22-30 are referred to as the Passion Psalms and are commonly read and prayed regularly during the Lent season. Psalm 22 is usually reserved for Holy Week (Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday).
Each week of Lent I am exploring one of the Passion Psalms as a prayer that can help you and I prepare our hearts to worship the sacrificed Lamb of God who rose victorious over sin, Satan, and death. Today we reflect on Psalm 24 and reflect on the Lord of Glory.

Lord of Presence (Psalm 23)
Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is the roughly 40-day period of time leading up to Easter. Traditionally, Lent is embraced as a time of abstinence and somber-mindedness as Christians around the world reflect on the passion of Jesus Christ. Christians typically fast from something during Lent, although not everyone does nor do all Christians observe the season of Lent.
I have written a lot about fasting in the past, so I will not spend time in this devotional...

The Long, Dark Winter: Depression, Anxiety, and Insomnia
Last week, we received over 30 inches of snow from the great blizzard of 2016. It was the single largest snow storm on record for my city, Baltimore. Any hopes of having a schedule or plan for the week were immediately scrapped as digging out our cars, drinking hot cocoa by the fireplace, and huddling together under blankets became the new schedule for my family. It was a great, memorable week.
Winter brings amazing displays of God’s grandeur and power like this snow storm. There’s something...

Book Review: “Broken and Whole”
There are books that you read, and there are books that you journal with. You should read both kinds of books—its healthy for your journey.
I recently read a book that took much longer to get through than I anticipated. The reason? It was a book I couldn’t just read, but had to journal with as I read it. The book is Broken and Whole: A Leader’s Path to Spiritual Transformationby my friend and doctoral mentor, Stephen A. Macchia.
Let me say this right out of the gate: if you are a ministry pra...

Two Important Questions
I get asked all kinds of questions all the time. My children ask me questions as they investigate this great big beautiful world. Members of our church ask me questions about the Bible, ways to live the Gospel, and sticky theological issues. Even my phone asks me questions (“Do you want to allow this app to send you notifications?” “Do you want to delete this message?” “Do you want to allow this app to know your location?”)
A few weeks ago, I was having coffee with a friend of mine who is exp...

2015 Top 5
As As the year draws to a close, its a fantastic time to pause and reflect on the year gone by and hopes for the year to come. This reflection time need not be stressful or terribly invasive to your life. Simply sitting down with your pen and journal and writing down thoughts on these topics can be sufficient.
Here are two articles I previously wrote that may be of benefit to you as you reflect on the year gone by and the year to come:

Advent: The Gift of Love
A couple of daysago Kim and I asked our children what they liked the most about Christmas. Abby, our 8 year old, said “snow and visiting grandparents.” Joshua, our 5 year old, dutifully followed his sister and said “snow” and then added “and getting gifts.”
Gift giving and gift receiving at Christmas time is sometimes a mixed bag, isn’t it? On the one hand, we might say that giving gifts and receiving gifts is not what Christmas is all about. On the other hand, we get stressed about not findi...

Resource: The Message 100
I am a massive Eugene Peterson fan. I love everything from his quirky book titles to the seemingly endless insights to life that he peppers throughout his works. This is why I was super excited when Tyndale House Publishers contacted me and asked if I would be interested in receiving a copy of The Message 100: The Story of God in Sequenceand review it on my website.
Here are my thoughts…
About the BookThe Message 100is the entire Bible laid out in 100 readings. It contains all 66 books of th...
