Lenten Wednesday: Water

The photo in this article is of the Patapsco River in the historic district of Ellicott City, MD. I took this photo last week during this cold, snowy winter we are having here in the mid-Atlantic.

Founded in 1772, Ellicott City is older than our nation and has a rich history. It was the first stop along the B&O railroad when traveling west from Baltimore, Babe Ruth was married (2nd marriage) in St. Paul’s Catholic Church overlooking the historic district, a civil war battle was fought nearby a...

Metaphors of the Church: Olive Tree

“What is a church?” A simple question, but the answers we get are not always helpful.

This article is part ofa series exploring metaphors used in Scripture to describe the church. These metaphors give us an expanded and impressive view of the church. This week, I explore a metaphor that comes to us in Romans 11:the church is an olive tree.

An Olive Tree

Romans 9-11 is often the unfortunate battleground over theological distinctives such as predestination and freewill or various understandings of...

Lenten Wednesday: Sand

Lent is a unique season set aside on the church calendar to help us prepare to grieve our sin that cost our Savior his life, to praise Christ for his atoning death on the cross, and to worship in awe at the strong hand of the Father who, by his Spirit, resurrected his Son from the dead.

I’ll post a devotional each Wednesday during Lent to help you reflect on Christ’s passion and resurrection.

Lenten Wednesday: Sand

Let me just put this out there: I much prefer mountains over beaches. That said,...

Metaphors of the Church: Family of God

“What is a church?” A simple question, but the answers we get are not always helpful.

This article is part ofa series exploring metaphors used in Scripture to describe the church. In case you’ve missed them, here are the other metaphors that I have addressed in this series:

Harvest
Bride of Christ
Branches
God’s House
Holy Priesthood
Pillar and Buttress of Truth
Family of God

This week, I explore a metaphor that comes to us in Ephesians 3: the church is God’s family.

The Family of God

In Ephesians 2:1-1...

Lenten Wednesday: Ash

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lent season, which ends on Easter Sunday. Lent is a unique season set aside on the church calendar to help us prepare to grieve our sin that cost our Savior his life, to praise Christ for his atoning death on the cross, and to worship in awe at the strong hand of the Father who, by his Spirit, resurrected his Son from the dead.

I will post a brief devotional on each Wednesday in the Lent season leading up to Easter Sunday. My hope and prayer is that...

Metaphors of the Church: Pillar and Buttress of Truth

“What is a church?” A simple question, but the answers we get are not always helpful.

This article is part ofa series exploring metaphors used in Scripture to describe the church. This week, I explore two metaphors that demonstrate the timeless relevance of the church in the world. The church is a pillar and bulwark of truth.

Pillar and buttress of truth

In his first letter to Timothy, Paul outlines to Timothy the task that lays before him in helping a hurting church. Timothy’s task will involve...

Wash Me: A Prayer Exercise

Here’s a little heart, sight, and sound prayer exercise that I crafted for you. It should take you about 10-15 minutes to go through.

After you pray through the following, I would love to hear your thoughts on the experience: Did you find it beneficial? Would you like for me to feature something like this on my website periodically? You can offer your thoughts in the comment section below or email me.

If you found this experience beneficial, please consider sharing it with others via email or o...

Metaphors of the Church: A Holy Priesthood

“What is a church?” A simple question, but the answers we get are not always helpful.

This article is part ofa series exploring metaphors used in Scripture to describe the church. This is the second week that I am exploring two metaphors found in 1 Peter 2:4-8. Today I look at the metaphor of the church as “a holy priesthood.”

A holy priesthood

The metaphor of the church as a holy priesthood is found in 1 Peter 2:4-5:

“As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God cho...

Metaphors of the Church: God’s House

“What is a church?” A simple question, but the answers we get are not always helpful.

This article is part ofa series exploring metaphors used in Scripture to describe the church. Over the next two weeks, I’ll explore two metaphors found in 1 Peter 2:4-8. I’ll begin with the metaphor of the church as a spiritual house.

A spiritual house

In 1 Peter 2:4-5, Peter describes the church as “a spiritual house.”

“As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precio...

What I’m Reading: “Redeeming Science”

I recently shared the stage with an astrophysicist at an event called “Science and the Christian Faith.” We addressed two questions: “Are science and the Christian faith incompatible?” and “How should Christians share their faith with people who use science as an attack on Christianity?” One of the resources that was helpful in my preparation for my talk(s) was Redeeming Science: A God-Centered Approach by Vern S. Poythress. Below is a brief review of the book in case you are interested in ex...
