The Mark Taylor Series: Books One and Two

Here are a couple of review excerpts from Amazon:

This review is from: No Good Deed: Book One of the Mark Taylor Series (A Psychological Thriller) (Kindle Edition)This book is so well researched and written, it feels true. The author is gifted and we are the beneficiaries...Outstanding.

This is a fantastic story. The basic premise (an antique camera that produces photos of future calamities) is a great hook, especially the doubts that Taylor has about using it. The interrogation scenes are quite disturbing, as they should be, and it is obvious that the author did her homework. I especially liked the romance between Taylor and Bishop; it felt real, without all of the corniness that usually accompanies romantic story lines. The way they finally hooked up, with neither of them sure that the other was still attracted to them, was spot-on. I also liked how totally alone Taylor felt after his release, when he discovered that his home is no longer his.

For March Into Hell:
M.P. McDonald weaves a brilliant, well researched tale, equally as riveting as her first novel. "March into Hell" will keep you on the edge of your seat rooting for the good guys and hissing at the evil one who is designing a plot to have the power that is inherent in Mark Taylor's unusual camera. It's a great read and one that lives up to its description, "psychological thriller." Just what we need on a cold winter's evening. Curl up and feel your pulse quicken with the fast paced story line.

McDonald's characters are well defined and pulled me into the story right from the beginning. There is no shortage of suspense here and the battle between good and evil is quite compelling. Both this book and No Good Deed: Book One (The Mark Taylor Series), first book in the series, have unusual plots which make for great reads! I recommend that you read the first book before March Into Hell as they tie into one another so very well. Enjoy! I surely did!

Also, March Into Hell is being featured Wednesday at The Fussy Librarian, a new website that offers personalized ebook recommendations. You choose from 40 genres and indicate preferences about content and then the computers work their magic. It's pretty cool -- check it out! www.TheFussyLibrarian.com

Waiting on the Island of Misfit Toys

(This is a slightly updated re-post from a year ago.)
Like most self-published authors, I have found that writing the book is the easy part--it's reaching the reader is so difficult. Sometimes I imagine that I’m on the Island of Misfit Books waiting for Santa to come and find a home for my novels, but instead of landing, the jolly old elf thumbs his nose at me as he flies on by.
Good thing there are sites like ENT, POI, Bookbub and Michael Gallagher's blog, Free Kindle Books and Tips, plus ton more to help a struggling author find homes for his/her books. Blogs like those are a bridge from the Island to the Kindles of readers who are looking for something just a little bit different from what they can get from trade publishers. Not that trade published books aren’t deserving of homes too, but they get loaded onto Santa’s sleigh every year all polished and shiny. They already have plenty of elves working on getting them under the tree. With the above mentioned blogs, I have had the opportunity to fling freebies from my iceberg as I floated close to the mainland. Many readers even picked them up, read them, reviewed and emailed me. I have been humbled, overwhelmed and immensely grateful for the positive response. The recurring comments are that they feel they are right there with Mark Taylor, the main character of my series, experiencing what he's going through.
My books are shiny and polished like the mainstream books, but they don’t follow genre rules. While they are thrillers, the focus is on Mark Taylor and putting readers in his shoes as much as possible. There is action, danger and bad guys, like many other thrillers, but there is also a little magical realism and lots of angst.  In other words, trade publishers would categorize my books as misfits.
When I started writing my first Mark Taylor book, No Good Deed, I had a story I wanted to tell of an ordinary man who becomes a hero. Through a twist of magical realism, he acquires the ability to see tragedies before they happen and can attempt to change the outcome. Unfortunately, his attempts to warn authorities about 9/11 lands him in the brig as an American enemy combatant.
I came up with the idea after reading a few articles in the news about real American enemy combatants and after doing some research, wondered what it would be like for an innocent man to be locked up—especially if he had no way to prove his innocence. I added the magical realism because I wanted readers to know for certain Mark was innocent, and also just because I love that kind of thing. I was a huge Quantum Leap fan, and recently I have been enjoying Person of Interest, and both shows have similar concepts of reluctant heroes. I mean, who doesn't love a reluctant hero?
As I wrote that first book, I had no clue it would be the first in a series. I mean, I already had a lot of fantastic company on the island of misfit books. Was there room for more? Daring readers who had taken a chance on my first book let me know they wanted a sequel, and then another and another. Being the industrious elf that I am, I hammered away in my little workshop and produced three more books. I am thrilled readers want more, and I intend to put down roots on this island of Misfit Books —maybe even build a cute bungalow complete with a garden. (I’ll just have to push Hugh Howey over to the mainland to make room.)
I’m thinking the books aren’t really the misfits, perhaps instead they just needed to find special people to read them. Maybe I’ll start calling it the Island of Books That Stretch the Imagination.  Catchy, don’t ya think? Or maybe Island of Books Too Awesome for Words? If you have any suggestions, please share!
Mark Taylor Omnibus (The Mark Taylor Series Box Set)
Last year I got an idea. What if I combined all four books and bundled them into one ginormous e-book called Mark Taylor Omnibus? Genius, right? I’m just like that dentist elf with the way novel ideas pour out of me. Okay. I realize I’m not the only one to have this idea. There was this one guy who did something similar with a book called Wool. Anyway,  Mark Taylor Omnibus is packed with all four novels currently in the series: Mark Taylor: Genesis, No Good Deed, March Into Hell and Deeds of Mercy as well as some bonus content currently only available in Mark Taylor: Genesis. The word count is over 320,000, and if printed out, would consist of more than 1200 pages. That's a lot of entertainment for $9.99. Where else can you find a gift for a book-loving friend for under $10? Of course, you could also try an individual book—they make great stocking-stuffers.

Thinking Outside the Box: Marketing Ideas

Sales of No Good Deed have really slowed and I'm getting desperate so here are just a few book marketing ideas I'm tossing around. What do you think?
On Amazon

1. Print books on rolls of toilet paper:  Can you imagine the water cooler conversations?

Lisa: "I can't believe what happened to Mark! That Jim Sheridan...what a horrible person."

Jen: "Wait...what happened to Mark? I blame it on the chili in the cafeteria, but the roll went from Chapter 3 to Chapter 9 in like, two hours! I missed the whole middle of the book."

Lisa: "Oh, you must have been in the handicapped stall. The middle one was still on chapter 4 the last time I went. Oh, and you know Sandy from HR? Well, she was in the first stall forever! She went in just before me, and I didn't see her come out for twenty minutes, so it was either the chili or she was in the middle of a good part."

Jen: "Hey, I'm going to go find Sandy and get a recap of No Good Deed. See you later!"

2. Go the Laffy Taffy route, only with quotes from the book. Of course, I'd have to call the candy something else. Maybe Tortured Taffy? Waterboarding Wafers? No Good Milk Dud? Suggestions welcome.

3. I got this idea last year when I saw the Google Street View car driving in my neighborhood. Create colorful lawn signs of No Good Deed's cover with the Amazon link large and readable. Then, scope out where Google Street view is currently active. They don't post a schedule, but I bet I could do searches on Twitter and find out. Then plant the signs in prominent places.

4. Create a board game called No Good Deed. You have to draw cards to see how far you can advance--or go backwards. One card could say, "Jim doesn't believe you and orders 2 waterboarding sessions. Go back ten squares." Or, "Good news! It's Christmas! No interrogation sessions scheduled! Advance 3 squares!"

Book 1:  Jill Jennings’ dream of becoming an elite runner turns into a nightmare when she breaks her leg less than a year before the Olympic trials. After two surgeries and a lengthy rehabilitation, she’s ready to pursue her goal again. Or is she… Jill’s healing and ready to hit the pavement, but her passion for the sport she’d planned to make her career unexpectedly wanes. On a whim, she changes course and runs right into tall, blonde, and gorgeous Tyler Bloodworth. Fly fisherman come and go in south central Colorado, but Ty’s back for a second summer, minus his girlfriend and hotter than ever. Tyler Bloodworth’s life plan to start a fly-fishing business with his dad back home in North Carolina is suddenly snagged when Jill Jennings runs circles around his heart during a summer stint as a fishing guide in Colorado. Back for a second summer, he sets his bait and casts his line, but Jill’s not so easy to catch. A catch and release fisherman hooks the one girl he won’t let go. A distance runner with big dreams and an uncertain future falls hard for a summer fling. Can Jill risk losing her career and her heart to Tyler when he’ll be gone in a few months, or will Ty reel in the biggest catch of his life?

Guiding the Fall: Book 2 Sexy multi-millionaire Jack Forrester has never needed anyone, and although he’s suffered a crushing blow to his personal and professional life, he’s not about to start now. When he moves to Hailey, Colorado, to look into a new business venture and work with a biographer documenting his career, he meets the beautiful and irresistible Olivia Golden – a woman creating more gossip in town than he is, and making him rethink his views on being alone. Olivia Golden has always enjoyed the attention her beauty has garnered. On the brink of finishing her student-teaching job, she’s ready to leave her hometown, start her career, and find love. Her plans go awry when she’s forced to fight charges levied against her at school and the insanely rich new businessman in town makes her a proposition she can’t refuse. No stranger to loss and public humiliation, Jack offers to help Olivia with the fall-out from the scandal…and soon, she’s offering him something as well. A no-strings-attached relationship. But as the sensual attraction between them grows, Olivia breaks through Jack’s carefully constructed walls to reach the lonely man inside. Will Jack risk his heart to save Olivia’s sinking ship, or will the beautiful teacher guide herself straight into a fall, and take him with her?

Taming the Moguls: Book 3 In the finale of the Golden Rule Outfitters series, small town business mogul Tommy Golden faces the biggest fight of his life. A corporate giant is threatening to commercialize the area’s quiet ski lift and change the fabric of the valley he calls home. When he discovers the woman sent to plead Holcomb Industries case is the woman who ripped his heart out a decade before, his passion to fight the development becomes a personal quest for revenge. Gretchen Lowrey knows her first and only love Tommy Golden lives in the valley where she’s been sent to negotiate with a group fighting her employer, but she doesn’t know he’s in charge of the resistance. If there’s one thing Gretchen understands it’s that she can’t change the past, but dealing with Tommy in the present is anything but pleasant. He’s still furious at her for walking out on him, but she can’t explain her reasons for leaving now any more than she could years before. The best thing she can do—the safest thing—is to broker a deal and get out of town fast. But fate has other plans. When Tommy and Gretchen are stranded on a snowy mountaintop, the last thing on their minds is a deal. The gloves come off and the rules get tossed out the window. Because in the game of love, there are no rules.

Follow Christy: Website § Blog </ a> § Facebook § Twitter </ div> Excerpt From Mending the Line: Book 1 Purchase Now : Amazon § Barnes § iTunes § Kobo § Smashwords“I’m a pretty good guide. You could start with me.” Oh, she’d like to start with him. Maybe his lips, that fascinating scar over his eyebrow, the scruffy chin, the broad shoulders, narrow waist, and long, blunt ended fingers. She’d start and never stop. She shook her head and tried to calm her racing heart. “I’ll give it some thought.” As if she needed an excuse to think of him. He still didn’t make any attempt to leave, but held her captive with his eyes. Her heart raced, her breath came out in short bursts, and she felt her insides turn to liquid. “Ty?” she breathed, her voice a shaky whisper. “Jill?” he mimicked. She stood up on legs she willed to stop trembling, her fingers splayed on the desktop for purchase in case her legs gave out under his stare. “I’m not exactly schooled in this whole thing,” she waved her hand between them, “but I get the feeling you’re hitting on me.” He grinned and she wouldn’t have been surprised if a canary yellow feather popped out of his mouth. “You’re pretty perceptive.” “Okay…why?” “Excuse me?” “I mean, you could have anyone here. Anyone anywhere. I saw your girlfriend. She was petite and blonde and gorgeous. Pretty much the exact opposite of me. I know you know Olivia. She’d run naked through the streets to get your attention, not that she’d need to do that to get a man’s attention, but…” She lifted her shoulders and let them drop as he flashed a mischievous grin. “Do you own a mirror?” he asked. “Yes,” she stated unequivocally. “I do, which is why I’m asking, quite poorly, why me?” He stepped around the desk. She turned, afraid to break contact with his stare, and the back of her legs ended up pushed against the desk. “For the very reason you’re asking and about a hundred more.” He lifted a hand and ran the backs of his fingers down her cheek. The zing it produced felt like lightning coursing through her blood. She felt the electric zap as it whipped through her body, setting fire to every single nerve ending. It was a wonder she didn’t burst into flames with just that one touch. He lightly gripped her chin, lifting her lips to angle perfectly over his. He touched his lips ever so gently to the corner of her mouth. Her hands found their way to his t-shirt and she had just enough firing synapses to register the wall of solid muscle beneath her touch. Then it all went dark as he breezed those lips over hers again and again, whisper soft, never quite making full contact. He cradled her head in his hands until she was practically panting with want. His teasing brushes were the most tantalizing torture she’d ever experienced. Excerpt from Guiding the Fall: Book 2 Purchase Now : Amazon § Barnes § iTunes § Kobo § Smashwords Lyle rolled his eyes. “My breathing makes you uncomfortable.” “That’s not true. But I refuse to fall starry eyed at your feet like every other woman in this town.” Lyle jerked back, his brows shooting up to his hairline. “What other women?” Erica felt her face heat and spun around to grab the water pitcher she’d filled for the table. “Never mind.” Lyle said and stepped in her path. “No, I’d love to know what other women in town are dropping starry eyed at my feet.” “I’m not going to stand here and feed your ego.” “What ego? I haven’t had an actual date in…” His eyes roamed the ceiling as he did mental calculations. “Months. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m not the one getting mauled on your patio. I’m the one getting his ass chewed inside.” “Don’t get all fussy with me because your girlfriend’s playing the field.” “I told you before Olivia’s not my girlfriend.” “I don’t care what she is.” “Then why do you keep throwing her and every other woman in town in my face as if I’m some kind of womanizer? You don’t know anything about me.” “You’re right, I don’t. And I don’t want to. I think it would be best if we just stayed out of each other’s way.” She tried to step around him, and he blocked her again. She tried the opposite direction only to have the pitcher bounce off his chest when he stepped in her path again. “What is your problem?” He looked down at her with his piercing brown eyes full of fury. His impossibly adorable dimples flashed. “Maybe I don’t want to stay out of your way. Maybe I’m sick and tired of having you pop in and out of my mind fifty times a day. Maybe if I actually got to know you, I’d have enough reasons to stop thinking about you all the time and wondering why your cantankerous attitude is so damn appealing to me.” “Who says stuff like that?” Erica hollered. “I’m not cant—whatever that word is. I’m pissed, and if you don’t get out of my way and let me put this heavy pitcher on the table, I’ll pour it over your head.” When he grabbed the pitcher and challenged her with his eyes to make the next move, Erica stood speechless and fuming. “Cantankerous, “Lyle said, “means crabby, grouchy, and generally irritable. And in your case, for no good reason.” Olivia didn’t seem to notice the tension when she breezed inside and asked where the bathroom was located. “Down the hall.” Erica pointed without breaking eye contact with Lyle. “Second door on the left.” Jack sat at the table. “Are you two going to stand around flirting all night long or are we going to eat dinner?” “Urrrrghh!” Erica grunted through gritted teeth. She turned around, grabbed the lasagna she’d worked all day to prepare, and plopped it on the table. “This was a great idea, Jack. Just great.” Excerpt from Taming the Moguls: Book 3 Purchase Now : Amazon § Barnes § iTunes § Kobo § Smashwords Tommy stayed seated and stretched his long legs beneath the table, crossing his boot-clad feet. The door at her back jangled at Dodge’s retreat. Gretchen remained standing. She didn’t trust herself to be alone with Tommy. She’d anticipated a difficult audience before she knew he was involved. But standing there, facing him, felt like facing a one-man firing squad. “If you don’t have any questions, I suppose we can call this meeting adjourned.” “I’ve got plenty of questions,” Tommy said, gripping his chin. The motion drew her attention to his mouth and the lips she’d dreamt about only the night before. In her dreams, they were soft and inviting, a far cry from the tight line they formed as he pressed them together. “Was this fun for you? Ambushing me?” “It wasn’t an ambush. I didn’t know you had anything to do with STS until a few days ago. By then, I was already here and it was too late to back out.” “Backing out is your style. Why change now when you can dig the knife a little deeper into my back.” Oh, God. She’d hurt him. The anger and the pain were so evident, and she’d tried so hard to shield him from pain. “I’m not trying to hurt you, Tommy.” “You can’t hurt me, Gretchen. I’d have to care for you to hurt me, and I just don’t anymore. You made sure of that.” She swallowed against the wave of nausea. What would he do if he knew the truth? What would it cost her? “I’m sorry you feel that way.” He stood up slowly, tucking his legs beneath him and straightening to his full six feet, two inches, forcing her to look up to meet his icy stare. “I don’t feel anything but disgust. I remember the girl who wanted to see the world and make a difference. I never thought she’d become a corporate hack. Course, I never thought she’d do a lot of things. Shame on me for expecting better of her.” She should be numb. Why was he able to aim those darts right where it hurt the most? “That girl is gone. She died right along with her dreams.” Tommy leaned down. Gretchen felt his breath stir her hair and squeezed her eyes closed. “I could have told you he wasn’t worth it,” he whispered. His boots clicked on the hardwood floors as he moved toward the door. “We don’t always get to choose,” she murmured. The door jingled as he gripped the handle, and Gretchen turned her head just as he cut his eyes out the front window. “Everything we have in life is a choice. I’m not going to let this valley suffer because you made the wrong one.”

Quick Tip for Facebook posts

I didn't intend to experiment but it worked out like one. Yesterday, I put a post on my author FB page announcing that Mark Taylor: Genesis was doing a Kindle Countdown Deal. I've been aware that Facebook wall posts with links in them aren't seen by as many followers, but I really had no concrete proof.

The post I made yesterday had only 49 views in over 24 hours. I looked at it a few minutes ago and realized I had forgotten to put the link to my book in the comments rather than in the wall post itself, so I re-posted the exact same post, except I moved the link to the comments. A half-hour later, out of curiosity, I checked to see how many views it had. I couldn't believe it! It had already been seen by 70 people!

I don't know how long this tip will be valid before FB changes their ways, but it really stinks. They want us to pay to boost posts, and I've done that a few times, but I hate doing that. It's not organic and shows the posts to friends of those who like my page--as if their friends will automatically want to get posts about my books and share the same reading tastes.

What I really hate is that whenever I post something on my wall, a box pops up encouraging me to 'Boost this Post' and it usually has a starting cost of $30 already marked in the box. All I would have to do to 'boost' the post is to hit an enter box. That's it. Sometimes it comes up for $60!  I'm scared to death I'll accidentally boost a post or two. You can go in and change the amount to as low as $5, which is the most I've ever done, but it bugs me that we have to pay to boost the posts to our followers.

Anyway, does anyone else have any good tips for using Facebook to reach readers?

ETA: It's now been 50 minutes since I posted the FB post. It's been seen by 149 people. Quite a difference! The one from yesterday is still at 49 total.

Another Kindle Countdown Deal--Mark Taylor: Genesis

November is shaping up to be a fun month for marketing. Maybe it's the whole Christmas mood creeping in--I don't know. I have a new Kindle Countdown Deal today, and stay tuned, next week I'll be hosting a Hopping the Boxes Blog Hop. The hop is to highlight some fantastic box sets that would make great Christmas gifts and introduce some amazing authors to new readers. In addition, there will be prizes!

It's kind of fun playing around with these Kindle Countdown Deals and I think I may someday figure them out.  I have Mark Taylor: Genesis available for just 99 cents . This time, there will be no price increases. When I made March Into Hell a KCD, I did the incremental price increases, but as the little clock ticked down to when the price would go up, I kept dreading it! I wanted the sale to go longer, but I couldn't change it at that point. So, this time, it's 99 cents for the whole deal time, which is, I believe, I have going until 11/14. (seven days is the max allowed.)

I also screwed up the sale for March Into Hell in the U.K. I thought it automatically enrolled a book in both markets when we set up the deal, but it doesn't. So, my apologies to those in the U.K. who might have tried to get the deal only to see that it wasn't on sale. I managed to mess it up a little bit again with this book. The original price, based automatically on the U.S. price, wasn't high enough to meet the threshold--which seems silly since it met it in the U.S. , but anyway, I had to raise the price a tiny bit to meet the threshold, and I hope once it's done republishing at that price, the sale price will kick in.

Here's my little blurb, and U.K. folks, check to make sure it's on sale before one-clicking if you intend to get the book. :-)

Kindle Countdown!
Only 99 cents for a limited time.

Ordinary guy, extraordinary hero.
In this prequel to M.P. McDonald's Kindle Bestseller, No Good Deed, find out how Mark Taylor was gifted with powers to change destiny. What drove him to risk his life for others, and why did everything go so wrong on that fateful September day?

March Into Hell--Kindle Countdown Deal

I'm all excited because Amazon has added another tool to the Select author toolbox. It's called Kindle Countdown and it means books can be put on sale for a limited time.

March Into HellSo, here is my first Kindle Countdown sale. I have March Into Hell on sale for the VERY FIRST TIME! (I think--I don't recall it being on sale before.) From November 3rd-7th, it will be priced between 99 cents and $1.99. Oh yeah, that's feature of the promotion--you can have the price change a few times during the sale. You don't have to, though. I entered mine as changing price about 36 hours in, I believe. I had second thoughts about that and was going to make it 99 cents the whole time, but it was too late to edit the sale, so if you want it, get it early! If you miss it at that price, it will still be $1.99 for a few more days and that is half off the usual price--which hasn't changed in almost two years.

For now, these deals are only available for books on Amazon.com, and Amazon.uk. They say they are looking to expand it to the other Amazons soon. I sure hope so!

Audio book Teaser Video

I'm in the process of having No Good Deed turned into an audio book. I am so excited by how well it's turning out, so I was going to make a little teaser video. I emailed the narrator, Daniel Penz, to make sure he was okay with the idea, and he was. Not only that, since he does video for a living, he offered to make one. Boy, am I glad I took him up on the offer! This is so much better than I could do! Check it out:

Also, No Good Deed, the ebook,  is free for the next few days. :-)
