ASP All Stars
September 4, 2014 I launched the Author Stories Podcast. In the year since, I have released 54 episodes with guests representing the indie publishing movement, traditional publishing houses and a number of hybrid publishing authors.
When I set out to do the show, I wanted to create something special. There are a lot of podcasts that focus on business, and that’s great, but I wanted a show that focused on what makes writers tick. The past year has not disappointed. One listener told me that Author Stories was like a Master’s degree program in creativity. I think that’s a pretty great compliment.
I invest quite a large amount of time in this podcast. There’s finding authors to interview, show prep, recording at all hours of the day and night, editing and maintaining all the back-end tech. It’s a labor of love, but a time intensive one. I want to continue to bring you quality content, as a matter of fact I want to bring you more quality content. This is where you can help. You can be an ASP All Star.
The podcast has a Patreon page. Patreon is a service that allows people to support artists that are making art. You can pledge any amount you like, from 1-2 dollars per episode or more. That doesn’t seem like a lot, but when a group of people get together to support something, good things happen. If we reach $100 per episode pledged, I will start releasing 2 episodes per week. That will mean more quality content and more insight from authors you respect.
Another perk for Patrons is that each month I will post a special author round table that will only be available to Patreon subscribers. These shows are always popular because you get to hear authors interact with one another, and something magical happens when you get a group of creative people together.
The podcast this past year has played a part in some big book launches, sales and events. If you are an author or publisher that has a book launching, or a sale that you would like to promote, contact me at authorhankgarner@outlook.com to talk about adding a featured segment to promote your work.
Look at these amazing guests we’ve had this year, and here’s to an even better year two!

Episode 54 with Matthew Mather

Matthew Mather, author of Darknet and Nomad joins me again this week to talk sci fi, how he utilizes his mailing list and beta readers for research and feedback and much more.
Matthew joined me last December, and a lot has happened in his career since then. Check out episode twenty one.
In just three years, Matthew Mather’s books have sold over a half million copies and been translated into sixteen languages, with 20th Century Fox developing his second novel, CyberStorm, for film. He began his career as a researcher at the McGill Center for Intelligent Machines, before starting high-tech ventures in everything from computational nanotechnology to electronic health records, weather prediction systems to genomics, even designing an award-winning brain-training video game. He now works as a full-time author of speculative fiction.
Something massive is coming…
And it’s heading for Earth.
That’s what Dr. Ben Rollins, head of Harvard’s exoplanet research team, is told by NASA after being dragged out of bed in the middle of the night. His first instinct is to call his daughter, Jessica, who’s vacationing in Italy with his wife. “Something is coming,” he tells them, “a hundred times the mass of the sun. We can’t see it, we don’t know what it is, but it’s there. NASA’s calling it Nomad, and in just months, the Earth may be destroyed.”
“Compelling science, gut-wrenching adventure, and a truly original premise. The disaster thriller we’ve all been waiting for.” – Nicholas Sansbury Smith, author of the Extinction Horizon series.
But what is it? And how did they miss detecting it until now? In a frantic race against time, Dr. Rollins must unravel Nomad’s secrets. A mysterious clue surfaces in his old research papers from the end of the Cold War, more than thirty years earlier…
The world erupts into chaos as the end approaches–and Ben discovers that his wife and daughter are trapped in Europe. The key to humanity’s survival rests in the final answers Dr. Rollins pieces together, in the midst of his desperate scramble across continents to find his family before Nomad swallows the planet.
MORE ABOUT NOMAD
A story of family, redemption, love and hope set amid a brand new category of cataclysm–all the more plausible and terrifying as the science behind it is vetted by a team of world-class astrophysicists from CERN, SETI, the Keck Observatory and more. It even has its own simulation video, included at the end of the book.
Nomad comes from the mind of award-winning, Amazon Best-Seller Matthew Mather, whose books have sold a half million copies and been translated into sixteen languages, with 20th Century Fox developing one of his latest novels, CyberStorm, for film.
A terrifying new breed of predator evolves…
A dark secret determined to stay hidden…
Prophetic and frighteningly realistic, Darknet is set in present-day New York, the story of one man’s quest to overcome a global menace pushing the world toward oblivion, and his incredible gamble to risk everything to save his family.
Jake O’Connell leaves a life of crime and swears he’ll never return, but his new life as a stock broker in New York is ripped away when his childhood friend Sean Womack is murdered. Thousands of miles away in Hong Kong, data scientist Jin Huang finds a list of wealthy dead people in a massive banking conspiracy. Problem is, some of the people don’t stay dead. As Jin begins her investigation, she’s petrified to discover her own name on the growing list of dead-but-alive.
On the run, Jake O’Connell and Jin Huang race across continents to uncover a dark secret spreading like a cancer into the world. Why was Sean killed, and how is the list of wealthy dead connected? Are some of them really coming back to life? But all this becomes irrelevant when Jake’s wife and daughter are attacked…
Now in development for film by 20th Century Fox, award-winning CyberStorm is a new classic of apocalyptic fiction that depicts, in realistic and sometimes terrifying detail, what a full scale cyber attack against present-day New York City might look like from the perspective of one family trying to survive it.
Mike Mitchell, an average New Yorker working to keep his family together, finds himself fighting just to keep them alive when a string of disasters shreds the world around them…the Internet and communication networks go down…a deadly viral epidemic rages across the country…then a monster snowstorm cuts New York off from the world.
In the chaos, rumors fly about a foreign attack, but even this becomes unimportant as Mike and his family struggle to survive in the wintry tomb of a doomed New York.
“I couldn’t put it down…finally shows how dangerous our transition to an interconnected infrastructure has become.” – Karic Allega, Joint Cyber Command, US NAVY
CyberStorm is an edge-of-your-seat view into one family’s battle for life in a ruined mega-city, with millions of readers voting it into the top-20 of GoodReads in its category. It comes from the mind of Matthew Mather, a leading cybersecurity expert and author of Darknet, Nomad, and the science fiction series Atopia Chronicles.

Ordinary Heroes: Doug Bradley
Last week I posted a blog about ordinary heroes. I was talking about my love of superhero comics that has stayed with me since I was a boy. Looking at the state of movie making these days, I’m not the only one. But the real point of the blog was that we all can be heroes, and we don’t even have to wear tights.
Each person has something that makes them special, a talent or gift that they can share with the world, and most of the time we don’t even know it. We have spoken a kind word, lent a hand, or done something major that really made the difference in someone’s life.
One of those people that has had a profound impact on me is my friend Doug. I first met Doug nearly 40 years ago. We started elementary school together, and it was a small school. People that were different stuck out, because with so few people, there was no place to hide. Doug was different. He was in a wheel chair and had a hard time speaking because of Cerebral Palsy. It would frustrate him if you couldn’t understand what he was trying to tell you. But he was also a smart Alek, and didn’t take any crap from anybody. We actually had a different word, but this is a G rated blog.
People would try to help Doug, not out of pity, but because we genuinely wanted to help our friend, but he refused to be treated differently. I respected and admired him for his tenacity and attitude. In high school, when I was not a stellar student, Doug finished near the top of our class.
Doug is now a husband and father, and a well respected member of the community. He went to college and when he couldn’t find a job due to the hard time he would have at job interviews, he went back and pursued a second degree. He is now a civil servant in my hometown.
He has been adamant that people not treat him differently, to the point of finding himself in need. Doug’s condition brings all sorts of challenges and expenses. He desperately needs to upgrade his transportation to accommodate the fact that he now has to use an electric wheelchair instead of the manual one that he pushed around and loaded and unloaded all by himself. And he finds himself in a conundrum that an awful lot of people do. He works, therefore is not eligible for most benefits that he might qualify for if he was on disability. But a regular salary doesn’t take into account the special needs a person with Cerebral Palsy faces.
I helped my friend set up a Gofundme campaign to try to help offset this expense. It would mean a lot to me if you could chip in a little and help him, you can even donate anonymously if you like. This is your chance to be an ordinary hero, because believe me, my friend Doug is a hero to a lot of people here.
Here, in Doug’s words, is his need:
“About 2 years ago, I started having problems with my knees and legs. My wife started talking to me about possibly getting an electric wheelchair, because it hurt her to see me struggling so bad. I felt like I was giving up on my independence, but in the end I reluctantly had to start using an electric wheelchair to be able to go anywhere. It makes life less painful, but the electric chair requires a special lift be put on the back of the one car that I own. This requires that someone helps me load and unload my chair and help me into the car.
Having a wheelchair accessible van would allow me to regain my independence, but the accessibility conversions significantly raises the price of the vehicle. I am in a situation that many people find themselves in, I work, so that disqualifies me from many forms of assistance. I want to keep working and feeling that I am making a contribution to society and my family.
I have prided myself on being self-reliant and not requiring much assistance. Working and providing for my family are my first priorities, and having the freedom to do that unencumbered would make a huge difference in our lives.”
Doug’s Gofundme campaign is here: http://www.gofundme.com/pc2xb8nv
Email me if you have a story of an Ordinary Hero. I’d love to share their story. authorhankgarner at outlook.com

Ordinary Heroes

Remember these?
I am a comic book nerd. Have been since about 1976 or so when I got my very first Justice League of America comic from a spinner rack at the back of a drug store in small town Mississippi.
Opening those colorful pages and seeing these larger than life characters come to the rescue of people in distress gave me a sense of hope and excitement. The idea that I didn’t have to worry about an alien force attacking our planet was very comforting to a five year old. These men and women in spandex would be there to handle the heavy lifting. You could count on the good guys winning, and I liked that.
But life isn’t the same as the stories from the four color press. Sometimes bad things happen and the folks in tights don’t show up, but if you look closely, something far better is actually happening. Ordinary heroes show up.
These heroes are everywhere. Like the elderly lady that opens up her home to children after school that need help with homework until their parents get off work. Or maybe the man that takes the time to teach a child that is not his own how to throw a baseball. Maybe the people that ran into the World Trade Center to save anyone they could while everyone else was running out. Sometimes it’s off duty service men that take down an active shooter without firing a shot. Maybe it’s the neighbor that takes a meal to a family whose mother is sick, or the family that reaches out to the family that is different, in an attempt to build bridges instead of walls. Heroes are everywhere, if we just take the time to look.
In my new book Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Oliver Webber is an ordinary guy. Well, not exactly ordinary. He was born into unique circumstances, but even with a heritage like Oliver’s he still has to make the choice to be a hero. It’s not always easy, as a matter of fact, sometimes it’s life altering.
You might not have to tangle with a crazed occult obsessed pseudo-scientist, but the small acts of daily kindness that don’t get heralded on the evening news make you a hero to someone.
Hank Garner is the author of Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and the host of the Author Stories Podcast. Get Seventh Son for the introductory price of 99 cents.
Oliver Webber has a secret. In fact, his family have been the keepers of this secret for thousands of years. What he doesn’t know is that the ancient evil that his family has guarded has just been loosed, and Oliver is the only person on earth that can stop it. People everywhere are disappearing, an evil madman dead-set on ripping the very fabric of our existence, and a demon possessed civil war general seeking revenge, set the Mississippi Delta on the edge of annihilation. Oliver Webber, along with his girlfriend, his dog, and a crazy conspiracy nut, fight against time, and a secret death cult, to find his destiny as the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.

Mulligan is on sale
Mulligan is on sale this week. To celebrate the official launch of Seventh Son of a Seventh Son tomorrow night, I have marked Mulligan down to 99 cents. Pick up a copy here, and grab a copy of 7S7S while you’re at it.
The Facebook launch party is Wednesday night from 6-9 central. Use this link to join up. We will have lots of giveaways, author chats and fun for everyone.

Connor Mulligan is trying to escape what he sees as a less than stellar life when he finds himself eighty years in the past and possessing super-human powers. What Mulligan learns from his travels could hold the key to his future, and his survival.
Book one of the Mulligan Cycle.
