Law and Order.
Real life can often be summarised in fiction. I think a true example is Aesop's story of the grumbling frogs who decided they needed a king. At first their wish was granted by sending them a log of wood that turned out to be too placid. Then the frogs sounding somewhat ungrateful but insistent, had a new king as the log of wood was replaced by a hungry heron. Needless to say, there is a point to this tale and you should be careful about what you wish.
Mankind has striven to find a social system that protects and gives a chance for individual opinion, a chance to be heard over how life is governed. At first history records a lot of small bands commanded by leaders that eventually, after conquest or negotiation, became larger and the idea of kings became the fashion.
Some kings were good but others were very bad. To rectify the situation representatives of the population were given power to administer the laws of the area. In some cases the position of king became the figurehead to ensure the constitution and stability within society. Other societies dispensed with kings and opted for election of a leader with absolute administration power.
My point is that a governing system of society will often only be as good as the people operating it. Absolute power in one person runs the risk of returning the system back to the good and bad kings model of the past. Individual decisions of authority in leaders can influence international relations, it can either work to strengthen the bonds of unilateral participation or destabilise the working relationship and cause disparity.

Worldly Thoughts.
You could say that my introduction to worldly thoughts had an interesting start. As a young boy, my family lived at the top of a hill with a cul de sac. Opposite the house was a green, lined with trees. I was about eight or nine years of age and one day we noticed a man with a book standing in the street facing downhill. He was talking as if to an assembled crowd but there was nobody actually there. He had been talking for a little while when curiosity piqued and my father, who was less physically able, told me to go outside and stand there. I did as I was told and started to listen. Soon, I realised the man was a preacher and fervently seemed to believe what he was saying. Some of the local children started to gather and climbed the trees overhead. They started laughing and calling out. The preacher carried on speaking though, ignoring the distraction. It seemed an enormously long time before the preacher came to the end of what he was saying, by which time nearly everybody had gone. I was a sole spectator. He walked towards me and shook my hand and then left.
Later on thinking about the incident is when I came to the conclusion that my father's action to send me out to listen may have been driven by compassion for the lonely preacher. We did not follow any particular belief.
My next encounter with a faith was when I left school and was presented with a King James version of the bible and a little while later I started to read it. The more I read, although I appreciated the context, for me it increased the confusion of making sense of how things were. I was a scholar of science. For some people, the two could blend but I found I thought about it in terms of two separate categories. After pondering the problem the solution came to me. I concluded that either things happen with intention or they just happen. In fact, on Earth at this time both occur.
After looking at several world views, it became clear to me that in general, interpretation can be a transformative part of many things. I remember visiting a church one time and thinking how I would fight the good fight only to recall how I had the same feeling when I visited a mosque and both feelings had been valid.
As people grow, it is true that they can be shaped by the world and influenced accordingly. I think it is useful to be able to evaluate and build your own perception based on facts and as just judgement as possible. It can be good to be aware of thoughts and ideas, progress and assess altering viewpoints. Ultimately, it is right and good that with maturity a mind might change and even think differently. What I think is crucial is that worldly thoughts help to scope thoughts in the best way and give potential for positive growth.

World Current Affairs.
I would often hear my elders say, What is the world coming to? I did not used to think all that much of it, however due to recent world events and actions I find myself expressing the same sentiments.
Shortly, a second term for the newly elected President of America will begin, that is of course Donald Trump. Why should I be concerned about that? Because already every news night is full of Trump news. He is demanding American ownership of a list of geographical areas, such as The Panama canal, Canada and Greenland, which is part of Denmark. He has taken this objective further, indicating that he is prepared to use military force if necessary, which of course would mean war with Europe. This has come from a President who had claimed to end all wars and put a conclusion to one conflict in particular before he even officially took office.
If the United States of America leads by example, the flouting of usual parameters and codes of conduct might only cause unconventional events and responses to increase in politics. It is quite possible that Trump’s recent ambition will not be satisfied but the statements can in themselves be cause for destabilisation. In terms of ownership, Trump owns a golf course in Scotland and had in the past wanted to expand further until the people worried that the whole of Scotland was in question.
There is power in responsible ownership and one would hope that anyone with such a prominent influential political position should wield that status with a mind to promoting stability. The UK economy is plummeting down thanks to arguably inept decisions by chancellor Rachel Reeves. The Labour government has in a short time caused conflict with farmers, pensioners and the whole business community. The lack of trust in financial decisions could force the country into a depression as the cost of borrowing and paying the debt is climbing up and up. Rather than imposing costs on employment and income, financial Incentives should be used to encourage investment and productivity, as this way the economy will grow.
The result of the downturn of the economy is the far right benefiting from this situation. The Reform party led for the time being by Nigel Farage is seeing a surge in popularity. Many countries have appeared to be caught in a flux of extreme change in politics, perhaps due to a disparity between people and the governing state.
Elon Musk who happens to be the richest man in the world has waded into UK affairs, there was debate about a large donation being made to the Reform party and then direct public, strongly worded accusations to members of the UK government, bringing up issues of foreign gangs, grooming and rape. This sort of unconventional, attention heightening weapon in politics is another tool that should be handled with caution.
Current affairs matter and how these notions and actions are implemented can alter people’s perspectives and responses to how lives are lived. When platforms of free speech decide not to remove inaccurate information that potentially leaves the door open for intentional malicious lies to spread unchecked around the world. There are many recent controversies that, if normalised, could radically change our world. I think it is important to have a set of values and endorse what is only going to be helpful to society.

Christmas and Goodwill.
Christmas is a time for many to enjoy peace and goodwill and spread happiness. It is a springboard to remember family members as well as friends and acquaintances. It is the time when thinking about other people is regarded as even more of a priority and a time that should emphasise kindness and humanity.
We supposedly are a people who should be empowered with occasions to make wiser and better decisions. However it seems there are even more in the news that are suffering unbearable pain and possible death. Vulnerable members of society are forced into difficult dilemmas due to rising costs and cutbacks. Internationally, organisations and interests that should bring about proactive solutions seem inactive, paralysed to do anything to alter the plight of so many innocents trapped by war, crisis and conflict.
So many people, like me, are frustrated that after public demonstrations across the world nothing decisive happens to help those in distress. Investments in terms of finance and endorsement of public figures does not seem to have given way to significant, positive progress. At this time of year when thoughts of peace and good will to all should be at the forefront of everybody's minds, hopes for real improvement should not be forgotten.
Charities do their best but real change should be in the minds of leaders. At this time thoughts should focus on peaceful ways forward and not continuous destruction. I, as I am sure many other people, hope that better and more wise ways can begin to build and unfold.
I would like to wish a very Happy Christmas and healthy New Year to everyone. I will be taking a little seasonal break and will be back in January 2025.

Economy Thoughts.
The government has just announced its plan to nationalise the railways. I question the wisdom of such action, as I can remember the strikes and chaos of previous times when the railway was nationalised. Unless they have a master plan to ensure the smooth operation of the service, history is likely to repeat itself. If they want to nationalise something, why not the water or energy production.
Leaving the EU has not resulted in the bonanza of economic growth as promised. In fact the economy is one hundred and forty billion pounds smaller. The economic decision making of politicians, of all political parties so far, has been atrocious. Asking the public what economic policy should be pursued is arguably weak in terms of professional leadership. Labour has had years to work out what is necessary to grow the economy and it is no secret that there is a black hole of debt. Just as troubling is the minister for the NHS to ask the public how to improve the NHS. That surely should be something that his job requires for him to assert and decide upon.
The recent budget, far from stimulating progression, has decreased growth and reduced job opportunity. If Labour does not start to improve in public opinion and achievements, there is a distinct possibility that the extreme right will take over, as has happened in many other countries.
It should not need to be reiterated that running the country needs professional expertise and morals of a high standard. Both parties have shown a severe lack in their ability to manage the economy and morals are at a very low point. It is a sad state of affairs that billionaires and economic entities can dictate the direction and future of a country.

Horsing Around.
It is with some humour that I recall an incident from my past. When I was in my last year at school, it was time for the final set of exams and I thought my score was going to be pretty good. Often great plans can go awry and in this case it was no exception.
Preparation was uppermost in my mind as I viewed the box and springboard waiting for me. The queue of my classmates was behind me and I knew exactly what to do. I imagined myself charging towards the box and executing a perfect star position, lifting myself beautifully into the air as I cleared the box. The PT exam was the last of my exams so a good score would have helped no end.
One after another, my fellow classmates performed with ease and successfully completed the challenge of clearing the box, and then it was my turn. The box had a padded top with a lip around it. This important detail was not in my mind as I charged towards it. With a great bound like a rocket, I took off, only to catch my toes under the lip and land head first into the mat on the other side. Embarrassed, I was amazed that the teacher had given me any score at all. I asked him why he had given me that score, only to receive the reply of the following words. He told me simply, you got over the box.
After that somewhat challenging and significant moment, I reflected and possibly a more philosophical thought could be, that it is better to attempt a project even if it is not perfect. It was not what I had envisaged or planned for sure but I took from that early experience that it was ultimately better that I did something, than did nothing at all.
Even that low score helped with my overall marks. Failure is part of the progress necessary to achieve success. It is not always the happy times that shape the future. Not always the most according to plan achievements that teach the most.

Unfair to Farmers.
The inheritance tax proposed on farmers has recently been strongly debated and could be viewed as unfair and unjust.
Has the Labour government thought it through? I think not. Demanding twenty percent on an asset value of two million in value could cause generations to potentially cease farming and even drive some farmers out of business. The fact the government claims the tax will only affect a small number of farms is irrelevant when the tax itself in business terms could be seen as unjust and shortsighted. The average value of a typical farm in the UK is about nine million pounds and therefore a lot of farmers will be subject to paying the tax.
It does recently appear as if the government trot out the same lame excuse that taxes are necessary for the black hole and revenue from farmers will fund the NHS. The tax position is highly contentious given that it is used so often and opposes campaign election promises. Farming is arguably the backbone of our communities and country so to ignore the public's concern and the majority of their own backbenchers, who do not support the new tax, is troubling. Aggravating the farmers is perhaps not the best policy for the new government to take, as if they wish to stay in office successfully they should strive to serve the public better and come up with prosperity and longevity ideas.
I would have thought encouraging farmers to invest in farming would be a better way to go than maybe having to sell part of their land or vital resources to pay the tax.
The pro argument falls rather flat when there is no shortage of money to fund wars and wasting money on scrapped projects. I do not think it is very democratic that the Prime Minister can involve the country in unpopular policies and take decisions in regards to wars without consulting the public. It is unfair and causes major damage to the rapport between state and society.
Unfairness is an important trait that has destabilised many governing authorities, because if people do not feel heard then disapproval can quickly turn to dissension. I do not believe that after such a long term of disappointments and erosion of people’s trust in leadership and governmental decisions that the public needs any more turmoil.

Church Morality.
It is with relief that I see Justin Welby has resigned over the grave failure to ensure justice could be served on child abuser John Smyth. As the archbishop of Canterbury and Head Archbishop of the Church of England maintaining a high standard of moral responsibility is paramount to the integrity and respect of doing the job well.
However I was amazed to hear some of the senior clergy questioning if the man in the top job should have resigned in the first place. One can only assume if they were in the top job, morality over such a highly sensitive issue, would not matter to them. Another fact to think about is that several of the top clergy knew of the allegation concerning John Smyth and this was over some time, yet they did nothing to pursue proper investigation. Should they not consider resigning too?
To be fair to Justin Welby, he did have one or two good ideas but unfortunately putting them into practice failed to deliver the great goal of good for all. I remember his concern for exorbitant short term loans. Subsequently, he put forward the idea of the church launching a fair charge for short term loans. Upon checking the progress of the scheme, it turned out that as a condition, you had to be connected to the church establishment. It is a shame that the general public cannot take part in the scheme that is intended for people who need it.
As a representative of the church and someone who should have been in a position of trust, he is now the subject of debate and negative feelings. The church should represent positivity and embrace a message of trust. Welby had promised to be such a figure and a man who would prompt progressive change. An important idea and aim of inclusivity saw Welby encourage a more tolerant attitude for expression of sexual freedom. He also supported women's participation in the ministry of the church.
Some fear the credibility of the Church of England is beyond repair and point to the drop of church attendance as an example of this theory. Nevertheless I believe supporting principles of humane behaviour is essential to a healthy society and is not reflected in church attendance. It is important to have a system that empowers the qualities most needed, that provides help and reassurance. Trust is imperative and the way that this system is embedded into societies is crucial to how it can function and any potential good that it can do.

Letter of Advice.
Congratulations to Donald Trump for becoming the forty-seventh president-elect of America.
I have a few helpful suggestions as to what might be important actions for the good of America and the rest of the world.
The Ukraine conflict with Russia is, I understand, on the top of your things to do and this is followed by pursuing a two state solution to the Middle East war. On the home front, ensuring survivors of hurricanes and floods are receiving adequate help, I am sure everybody knows, is important on an individual and collective scale. Repairing the infrastructure of America including bridges and other transport links is critical as it enhances the capability of societies and economy. Delivering an affordable health care plan is an urgent action too. Tackling homelessness and drug abuse needs definite and hasty attention. Treating illegal immigrants humanely and processing applications for residency in the USA should be of prime concern. This is for both national and legal reasons, and of course implications. Interestingly, in historic terms nearly all of the population of the USA have come from emigrating parents.
The USA is claimed to be the figurehead of democracy and several international organisations are based there. Although the interests of America should be borne in mind by the President at the same time, concerns of the rest of the world help to shape trade agreements, common goals and values.
Let your time in office be celebrated by caring for all and perhaps indicate a presidency that can strive for peace at home and abroad. Sharing good ideas is a good policy no matter where they originate from and strength can come from many ideals.
One last point, I believe the recent success in the election could be due to the opposition ignoring the views of the public. Actions such as funding wars and supplying weapons for unrestricted killing in Gaza has led to disparity and disillusionment. The failure of an immigration policy that can appropriately work has been hugely impacting. Mistakes by others could be a useful guide for you in the future.

Water.
The subject of water is an interesting phenomenon. Without water, life as we know it would not exist. We are made of about sixty percent of it and in some organs this is considerably more. As an interesting contrast the Earth is covered by about seventy percent water. It is also extremely intriguing that given how important water is, once a molecule composed of two highly combustible substances is joined, this can render water to be inert. Even more puzzling is the way water expands when turning to ice.
The idea of running a car on water fuel is an ever terrific green, clean project and for a while took up my interest but the final mechanism has eluded me. But you never know one day it could become a reality. Running water, for years, has been used to power mills and electricity dams.
Perpetual powered devices often use water as part of the apparatus. Unfortunately not many seem to work successfully, but they are a mind bending fascination.
Historically, water was a vital energy tool during steam powered years. Water has carried us and given a way forward. There is something undeniably awe inspiring when viewing great steam trains and the way that they run. Steam powered ships of course use this same mode of power and were an important means of transport for both goods and people.
Over the years, society has found a unique way of utilising water in the form of water cannons and in cases of public disorder this has been a debatable display of crowd control. Water is of course the very essence of function in important vehicles such as fire engines. It has long been the go to for an environmentally friendly way to treat and respond.
Recently there has been much to highlight the role of water in many people’s lives because of the state of waterways, rivers and coasts in the United Kingdom. In the news and politics, water cleanliness has featured as an object for focus because it features so heavily in the physical lives of people and wildlife. It can mean quality of life and leisure is under threat if water conditions are put into question. Water can equate to health, wealth and happiness.
