As a child of the sixties, it might be assumed that I had a wild and crazy upbringing. Instead, it was the beige suffocation of 1970s English suburbia, all broken tarmac, parkas, flares, chopper bikes and Doctor Who at teatime on the telly on a Saturday night. This early exposure to Sea Devils, Ice Warriors and the like, along with late-night showings of the classic Universal monster movies on BBC2, provided my escape from the mundanities of double woodwork on a Thursday afternoon, the unforgivable sin of being bad at sports and the inevitable humiliation of wearing National Health Service glasses.
