No. Wire. Shelves!!
My husband and I moved into our home back in 2004. It was brand new; we’d picked the lot, the floor plan and everything in it.
Even the wire shelving.
I must defend myself by saying we were told that everyone was using wire shelving. And we ‘d seen proof to back up this statement. We’d been house hunting for several months and every house I could remember had wire shelving in the bedroom, bathroom and hall closets. So I didn’t fight the shelving. The exorbitant fee for built in shelving probably had something to do with it, too. ;-)
Fast forward 11 years later and I’m done. Done. I probably could’ve gone on forever with dimpled towels and sweaters. But when I found myself in my pantry wiping up spilt syrup–again–from a bottle that fell over and dripped on the the two shelves beneath it and the floor , I knew I couldn’t go another day with that f*^%in’g wire shelving in our kitchen.
Unfortunately, I would have to. The syrup incident happened after dinner. LOL But that didn’t stop me from putting a plan into motion. I googled “wire shelving solution” and found that I wasn’t alone. Lots of other people were just as disgusted as I was with this shelving. I found loads of cute ideas and pictures of how to fix them:

thefrugalhomemaker.com

iheartorganizing.blogspot.com

fakeitfrugal.blogspot.com

salvagesavvy.com
As appealing as I found those pictures, I didn’t have the time to do a complete pantry do-over. I just wanted to do something to prevent bottles from tipping over, straws falling between spaces and bags slipping between the cracks. After more searching I found a solution–
Vinyl tiles.
I know! But it’s true. Vinyl tiles offer a semi-permanent, smooth & stylish solution. :-) I purchased mine from Lowe’s. They are 12″ x 12″. You can buy them individually for like .70 cents or a pack of 30-40 for ~$25. I’d measured my shelves and had a rough idea of the number of tiles I’d need, so I opted to purchase the pack.
So here’s my pantry pre-reno:
Steps:
1. I removed everything. Which was a good thing. There were some items that had …uh… lingered past their prime. I wiped down the shelves to remove dirt, dust and any other sticky residue that remained.
2. I applied the vinyl tiles. I removed the paper backing and then carefully applied them to the shelves. The sticky backing is good because it adheres to the wire shelves, so the vinyl tiles don’t shift. Plus, should I ever have to remove the tiles I can do so.
3. I replaced the items in my pantry, with some additional organization.
What do you think? Do you have the dreaded wire shelving? Do you have your own tips on how to deal with them? Or do you like them? Let me know.

My Weekend at Virginia Festival of the Book, Part 2
Last week, I talked about the panel I participated on. You can find the link to that post here. But my weekend wasn’t over. On Sunday, I was an honored guest at the Charlottesville Chapter of the Links, Incorporated 12th Annual Celebration of the African American Literary Experience. If you’re not familiar with the Links, they are an exclusive non-profit organization, comprised primarily of professional African American women, with a focus on civic, cultural and educational endeavors. In my debut novel, The Tycoon’s Socialite Bride, my heroine’s mother belonged to the Mires Social Club. While that’s a fictional club, I based it on elite social clubs like the Links and the Girl Friends.
The brunch began at 11:30 am. I showed up to the Omni Hotel Ballroom and was shown to my table. The first thing I noticed were the beautiful decorations.
The second thing… the hats. Hats of all shapes and colors. I wanted to take pictures, but it was clear this was not that type of event. LOL I grabbed these from the Links’ Facebook page.
Each table had several authors. Among the authors at my table was Turk McCleskey who wrote, “The Road to Black Ned’s Forge: A Story of Race, Sex and Trade on the Colonial American Frontier.” There were also two very prominent families, with whom I had very enjoyable conversations. Both were old Virginia families who knew a lot about the Commonwealth. We talked about the county where I’d spent half of my childhood, where one of them had spent several years working at the college there. We also talked about the place where I now reside, as another of my table mates was born nearby. I couldn’t have been placed at a better table.
After a lovely brunch buffet, each author was asked to stand and speak for a few minutes about themselves and their work. I was nervous, but when it was my turn, I talked about how my father encouraged my love of books by reading to me from an early age and how I was thrilled to be fulfilling my dream as a published author. At the end, I read the back cover blurb of The Tycoon’s Socialite Bride, which elicited a few oohs and aahs. LOL
I was the only romance author there. The other genres represented were non-fiction, literary fiction and poetry. Actor Tim Reid was there for a book he’d written, as well as professors from several universities, sociologists, economists and civil rights activists. We were serenaded by wonderful singers from the University of Virginia’s Black Voices Gospel Choir and treated to piano selections from a talented local youth. Afterwards, I signed books and talked to the guests and other authors. I was proud to be part of such a special event honoring African American authors and if I participate in Virginia Festival of the Book next year, I hope I’m invited to the brunch again. :-)

My Weekend at Virginia Festival of the Book!
For five days during the third week in March, Charlottesville has played host to the Virginia Festival of the Book. This year marked the 21st annual celebration of books, literacy and literacy culture in Virginia. According to their website, “[t]he Festival is the largest community-based book event in the Mid-Atlantic region and has attracted audiences of more than 20,000 for each of the past eleven years.”
While the Festival wasn’t always friendly to romance, we’ve seen a change in the past few years. This year, I was honored to be asked to participate on a panel entitled, “They Lived Happily Enough For Now: Challenges in Writing Modern Love” with fellow romance authors Kimberly Kincaid, Carey Heywood and Delancey Stewart.
Considering I’m new to publishing, I have to say I was nervous about the panel. All of the other authors are multi-published. I wondered what I could contribute. And the planning! I couldn’t just concentrate on my panel and what I had to say. I had to act as my own PR firm and deal with that aspect as well. Because my books are print on demand, if I wanted to have my books sold after the panel, I, instead of my publisher, had to procure the print copies and work with the Barnes & Noble vendor to sell them.
My friend and fellow author, Mary Behre, was part of the festival, too, appearing on a panel entitled,”Wicked, Witchy & Wonderful: Strong Heroines in Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy.” Before we left she surprised me with these necklaces, featuring charms of my book covers!
I’m happy to report my worries were a waste of time and energy. :-) The audience was really engaged and interested in our thoughts on conflicts in writing modern day romance. I write in the genre of contemporary romance and I don’t have devices, like vampires or werewolves (paranormal) or murders and mysteries (romantic suspense) to help with the plot and external conflict. Similarly, I don’t have the strictures of societal mores (historical) to keep my hero and heroine apart. So my books live and die by my characters and their internal conflicts. In this day, there isn’t much to keep two people apart if they want to be together. My job is to create characters who possess some barrier to love and then craft a story where they conquer those fears so they can find love! In some ways, that makes me a relationship counselor, but in reverse. :-)
Afterwards, we signed books and talked to the attendees. It was amazing fun. When I write, I spend a lot of time by myself in my office (which should be enough to confirm that I am a writer LOL) but its at these events, when I talk to fans who’ve read my work or I meet new readers, that I’m amazed I’m actually doing something I’ve wanted to do my entire life. I know how rare and special that is and I don’t take it for granted.
But my weekend wasn’t over. Next week I’ll tell you about the brunch I attended the following day.

The 12 Days of Christmas Blog Hop– Day 10
Day
Memory/Family Tradition
Welcome to Day Ten in our Twelve Days of Christmas Blog Hop!! We’re almost done. :-( It’ll be hard to say good-bye, but I don’t have to think about that right now. Let’s enjoy all the tips, recipes and decorations, not to mention the new authors and books to add to your TBR pile.
Today, it’s Memory or Family Tradition: Gifts from Santa!
I have three older brothers and an older sister. Yup, I’m the baby. :-) Our family opened gifts on Christmas, and like most kids, we couldn’t wait until Santa came. On Christmas morning we would come down the stairs and our gifts from Santa wouldn’t be wrapped, but laid out on our assigned chairs in the living room. It wasn’t until I was much older that I learned Santa wrapped other kids’ gifts. But I liked our way. It was like an immediate explosion of excitement. My eye never knew where to land. I’m surprised I never had a seizure. LOL
After drying your tears from remembering your own family tradition, you’ll need the wonderful escapism of Christi Barth’s latest, Tinsel My Heart, available Now! As part of the 12 Days of Christmas Blog Hop, Christi is giving away the complete ebook set of her Aisle Bound series. Click here for a chance to win. Scroll to the eleventh screen for this particular giveaway.
Becca Huntley’s produced the Lyndale Park Player’s over-the-top Christmas pageant for ten years. The beloved Minneapolis tradition is the theatre’s main fundraiser. But this year’s production is almost canceled when their director disappears into rehab at the last minute. Good thing his directing partner steps in to save the day. Except for the minor fact that he hates everything about Christmas.
Jack Whittaker wiped the Twin Cities off his shoe with his graduation tassel and never looked back. But duty compels him to fulfill Tyler’s promise to direct the show. Even though it means working side-by-side with Becca, the girl he always wanted, lost to Ty, but never forgot.
It’ll take more than a few handfuls of tinsel to soften Jack’s heart toward Becca’s favorite holiday. Steamy kisses that melt the snow right off his boots are a step in the right direction. They’ll both discover that Christmas is about making each other’s dreams come true. But will doing so destroy their chance at a happily-ever-after together?

Dessert Recipe/Holiday Movie Swap
Welcome to Day Nine in our Twelve Days of Christmas Blog Hop!! Thanks for coming back. Are you having fun? Hold on to all the memories as there’s only four more days to take part in the celebration. If you’ll recall, I made a little mistake on Day Two of the Blog Hop. It was supposed to be Favorite Holiday Movie, but I did Favorite Holiday Recipe. My bad. So today, instead of doing another Dessert Recipe (see Day One), I’m going to finally talk about my favorite holiday movie: Hallmark Holiday Movies!
I know, you’ve never heard of that movie. ;-) That’s because I don’t have one favorite holiday movie. I love all the romantic holiday movies that Hallmark plays in the month leading up to Christmas. Movies like Comfort & Joy, Snow Bride, A Very Merry Mix-Up and A Princess for Christmas. I could spend an afternoon with hot cocoa and a warm blanket lost in the romance of the holiday season. This shouldn’t surprise you, I’m a romance author, after all!
Now before you sneak off to catch A Royal Christmas (yup, an actual Hallmark movie :-) ), take a moment to check out Aidy Award’s latest, Curvy Temptation, available Now! As part of the 12 Days of Christmas Blog Hop, Aidy is giving away a $10 Amazon Gift Card and a set of curvy-love bracelets. Click here for a chance to win. Cade, the stoic Dom, always in control but never in love, is drawn to Vanessa’s size 20 submissive streak. He can’t keep his hands (or his tongue or any other part of his body) off this voluptuous new sub. Her open and honest exploration of her new found kinks excite him like no one else he’s ever been with.
Amazing orgasms and intimate cuddles soon grow into love for Vanessa, but Cade’s the one person everyone has told her not to develop feelings for. This Alpha male drops his subs the moment they express deeper feelings for him. What’s a girl to do?

The 12 Days of Christmas Blog Hop– Day 8
Day
Favorite Holiday Song
Welcome to Day Eight in our Twelve Days of Christmas Blog Hop!! Thank you for sticking with me. :-) The end is rapidly approaching as there are only five more days to take part in the celebration and learn some useful holiday tips, traditions and recipes. Plus, more authors and more books! :-)
Today, it’s Favorite Holiday Song: All I Want for Christmas!
This was a no brainer. I knew the instant I saw this theme what my post would be. I listen to this song year round, not just at Christmas, that’s how much I love it. And believe me, it has stiff competition. I grew up listening to the classics sung by The Temptations and the Jackson 5. I’ve lived through every pop diva having to do their own Christmas album, putting their “spin” on them. Believe me, my Christmas play list is LOOOONG. LOL
But this is the song. And not the Mariah Carey version, either. (Sorry, Mariah, don’t mean to pile on.) I listen to the Olivia Olsen version from the movie Love Actually. I dare you to listen to it and not be filled with the Holiday spirit.
Now before you start another rousing rendition, take a moment to check out Stephanie Berget’s latest, Sugarwater Ranch, available Now! As part of the 12 Days of Christmas Blog Hop, Stephanie is giving away a PB copy of Sugarwater Ranch and a keychain. Click here for a chance to win. Bullrider Sean O’Connell’s life is perfect, or it was until his partying lifestyle affects his riding ability. Now he’s ended the season too broke to leave the Northwest for the warm southern rodeos. When a wild night with his buddies gets out of hand, he wakes up naked, staring into the angry eyes of a strange woman. His infallible O’Connell charm gets him nowhere with the dark-haired beauty. It’s obvious she’s not his usual good-time girl, so why can’t he forget her?
Catherine Silvera finds a waterlogged, unconscious cowboy freezing to death in front of her uncle’s Sugarwater Bar. She saves his life—then runs faster than a jackrabbit with a coyote on its tail. Any man who makes his living rodeoing is bad news, especially if he thinks partying is part of the competition. He’s everything she doesn’t want in a man, yet she can’t shake her attraction to the rugged cowboy.

Welcome to Day Seven in our Twelve Days of Christmas Blog Hop!! I’m so pleased you continue to come back and find some useful holiday tips, traditions and recipes. Today, it’s Finger Food Recipes: Bacon-Wrapped Smokies, y’all!
First off, I know the difference between an appetizer and finger foods, but practically speaking, in my house, the difference in minimal. I don’t serve several course meals, so if I’m making an appetizer, it’s probably going to be a finger food, like my Deviled Eggs. This is a good one, and most holiday parties contain some version of it. (Or this version. Not like it’s especially difficult.) LOL Enjoy.
Tip: Use foil on baking sheet or use disposable baking sheets. Cleanup can be messy!
Ingredients
1 lb sliced bacon, cut into thirds
1 package (14 oz) beef cocktail wieners
3/4 cup brown sugar, to taste
Directions
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
Wrap each cocktail wiener with a piece of bacon and secure with a toothpick. Place on a large (foil-lined or disposable) baking sheet. Sprinkle brown sugar generously over all.
Bake for 40 minutes until the sugar is bubbly. Serve immediately or place in slow cooker on low setting, if serving later.
Now before you shove another delicious wiener in your mouth (OMG!) take a moment to check out Heather Miles’ latest, Merger, available Now!
