Out and About, A Legend Sets Sail

With Windmaster setting sail, I'm going to be taking a virtual cruise through the worlds of Windmaster and the Dragshi Chronicles. Passengers on cruise ships used to throw streamers at those on shore when the anchor lifted.  For this sail, the streamers will be shimmering ribbons cast by mages or stopped by dragons. In a change of pace, instead of a focusing on a single topic, this post will change and expand as the links go live with a note about each port of call.

Itinerary for Windmaster Legend's inaugural sail

First port of call.

Talking about magical equines, pets, and a cat with attitude (as well as books I've written) on Marcia James blog, Go Pets. A special itinerary note: Will be there all March.

Hooked on Windmaster Legend, Shall We Dance? #mfrwauthor #mfrwhook

A forbidden love. An impossible quest. The accusation of witchcraft. Can love survive?

Today I'd like you to meet the man I hope you'll love to hate, Leod of the House of Pirri. Since he is from the same trading guild as Pelra, he is supposed to live by the same code of honor, and treat her as kin. However, Leod makes his own rules. And his relatives on his house's ruling council of the House provide him with the power to do so.

The scene takes place the night of the captain's conclave. Leod senses something happening in the maze and heads in to see what secrets he might find--secrets that could be used to gain more power. He sees an unknown woman sitting by herself and presents a proposal and receives Lady Pelra's response.

Excerpt:

My lady, I am Leod, a seated member of the ruling council of the House of Pirri.” He rose from his best court bow. “At your service.”

Surprise stopped his hand in mid-gesture of offering her the glass of wine. The “come hither” smile that normally resulted from his introduction was missing. Instead, there was just silence and a raised eyebrow. He’d heard the bards could strip a man to the bone with a glance or single word. But he’d never believed it. Until now.

“The best wine in Stratven for the most beautiful woman.”

Assurance filled him. That line had never failed to win over a woman. This one might be a bard, but she was still a woman. However, instead of an encouraging smile, her response was a chilled, “No, thank you.”

He shifted to the approach that had bedded him many a fair maiden. “Then may I have the honor of this dance? A man only has the opportunity once in his life to have such a beautiful companion, let alone one bard-trained.”

The slight tightening of her lips gave Leod little insight into what he had said wrong. Still, he held the smile that had won over so many women.

His target still didn’t submit. Instead, she gave a slight shake of her head. “I appreciate the compliment. However, I am quite content where I am. Maybe you should return to the dance.” Her head-to-toe scan of him added to the fire building under Leod’s skin. “There should be someone there suitable for you.”

Hooked on Windmaster Legend, Performing Isn't Rewarded, #mfrwauthor #mfrwhook

A forbidden love. An impossible quest. The accusation of witchcraft. Can love survive?

Last week you were introduced to Lady Pelra. There is a saying no good deed goes unpunished. Iol had no idea that an order from his superior would have an unexpected result. In response to readers requests, the aftermath of Iol's house volunteering him to assist the performers of the evening's finale. Is it accolades? A promotion? Fate decreed banishment for all. The scene takes place just after a captain mast is called and Pelra answers charges of selling herself and treason to her house. The accuser is rebuked and sent to his quarters aboard ship.

Excerpt:

Commander Pelra, I offer the apologies of my house, and mine personally,” Kursko said. “Leod will not bother you anymore. I’m sorry, but you can’t stay in Stratven. He does have friends in town, and I and the rest of the council value you too much to risk you. Fortunately, we have the perfect solution. Clan Daimh petitioned the council for someone with skill in contracts to work with them during the cold season at their winterhold; then in the spring travel with them as they trade and help with any contract questions. You have been given the assignment.” He offered a wry smile. “This assignment is not punishment and should not be considered such. You will be doing your house a favor.”

And continuing the excerpt, once the proceedings were over.

Conall bowed to acknowledge the thanks. “I also have news. The head of the guildhall here in Stratven called me to her office this morning. I, too, am being reassigned for the winter.” His smile warmed Pelra even as she wondered about the mysteriousness of his words. “It appears, Lady Pelra, we will be traveling together. I am taking new music to Clan Daimh. And since winter closes the passes, I will be staying until spring to help teach the little ones and to record the clan’s ancient tales for the Bard Guild archives.”

Pleasure at the change to what she had expected would be a lonely winter chased away the last of the chill left by the captain’s mast.

Iol doesn't escape unscathed either as his superior, the man who actually broke up Leod's attack on Pelra renders one final judgement.

“It seems there are apologies going all around today. Iol, our council feels, especially after today’s court, that the risk of retribution from Leod is high. To keep you away from him until our two houses work things out, you are being sent to Botunn Loghes to run the Cszabo post there. The previous postmaster is ill and returning to his family in the Southern Continent.” Sadness flickered across the man’s face then disappeared. “Unfortunately, no gold comes with this command, but you will have a ship. I don’t know what shape Loch Bird is in, except that she is in the water. When you report to me tomorrow, I’ll give you the authorization you’ll need in case repairs are needed.”

Conall clapped Iol on the back. “It looks like we will all be traveling together for a while.”

Pelra wondered at the look on Iol’s face. But I have time on the trail to figure it out.

Bonded by friendship and their music, some paths diverge while others entwine. You'll have to read Windmaster Legend to see what the future holds and which of the suitors, if any, win Pelra's heart.

Tuesday's Title To Catch A Fox, Susan Calder

A Calgary woman recovering from a psychotic breakdown searches for answers in California.

Title: To Catch a Fox

Author: Susan Calder

Date of Release: 01/18/2019
Genre: Psychological Suspense

Publisher: BWL Publishing Inc.
Buy Links:   Amazon  /   Books2Read / Indigo /

Blurb:

Julie Fox is on the run. A psychotic breakdown has shattered her career in Calgary, her marriage and her love for her child. Julie travels to California to search for her mother and learn the root of her problems.

Clues at a cult-like retreat appear to hold the answers. As the retreat leaders lure Julie into their twisted game, her ex-husband tries to wrest her from their control. Trapped in a tangle of lies, Julie’s grip on reality falters.

Who will catch Julie Fox? Or will she break free, confront the truth about her past and set out on a new journey?

Behind the Scene:

To Catch a Fox has been a work-in-progress for 25 years. An earlier version of the story was the first complete novel draft that I finished. I revised the manuscript for many years, eventually decided it didn’t work and put it away the drawer. I was certain that was the end of it. But about eight years later, the fox leapt up and bit me with a totally new concept. By then, I was writing and publishing murder mystery novels. But I worked on the new To Catch a Fox on the side, and then it was finished.

The story was inspired by my episode of clinical depression when I was nineteen years old. Twenty years later, a personal crisis propelled me on an internal quest to discover the roots of my problem. I emerged with a desire to write about this experience through fiction. Along the way of writing my novel, a mentor suggested I make Julie psychotic to raise the stakes of the story. I told her this would be a stretch for me, but with research and more years of writing fiction I felt able to imagine a woman going through a psychotic breakdown.

The novel’s major setting in California was inspired by holidays in Italy and California, which share a Mediterranean climate. I realized California would be easier for me to revisit for further research. So the novel’s primary location is a California retreat with an Italian fantasy theme. My favorite character in the novel? Julie, my heroine, although I can’t help falling for my charming rogue, Sebastiano.

Author Bio:

A native of Montreal, Canada, Susan Calder worked as an insurance claims examiner before taking up writing at the age of 39. Susan moved west to Calgary in 1996 with her husband and two sons. She is the author of three novels and numerous short stories. Her work ranges from murder mystery to mainstream and suspense.

Susan teaches fiction writing courses and workshops at the Alexandra Writers Centre Society. She is a member of Crime Writers of Canada and serves on the board of Calgary’s annual When Words Collide Festival for Readers and Writers. Her non-writing activities include traveling, hiking and visiting her sons and granddaughter in Ontario. To learn more about Susan and her writing, please visit www.susancalder.com.

Hooked on Windmaster Legend, Meeting a Lady, #mfrwauthor #mfrwhook

A forbidden love. An impossible quest. The accusation of witchcraft. Can love survive?

Last week I showed you the cover and blurb for my upcoming fantasy romance, Windmaster Legend. Today you are introduced to Lady Pelra as seen through another's eyes.

Excerpt:

A slight shift in the shadows behind the low stage on which a quartet from the Bard Guild performed caught Iol's attention. With quick steps, he slipped into the maze, heading towards whatever caused the earlier disturbance. He stopped behind the tall hedge that separated two of the maze paths. The movement repeated. This time the cause was clear. A woman in her mid-twenties sat alone on a cushioned bench. She held a small guitar case on her lap and balanced a slender metal tube of a flute atop the larger instrument.

Iol searched his memory for any recall of the woman. She hadn’t taken advantage of the special table set aside for the performers or taken food or drink from any of the servants. He was sure of it.

She’s probably an apprentice about to give her first solo journeyman performance, he thought. Memories of his own exam and the nervousness before it surfaced. Loathe to disturb the woman’s quiet solitude, he slipped back to the more boisterous courtyard where he sought out the head servant and questioned him about the woman in the arbor.

“No, she hasn’t eaten or taken a cup all night. I’m sure of it.” The other man glanced towards the stage. “I even took her a plate myself.”

“Thank you, Latrell. It’s not your fault. You did as you should. If she refused, it was her right.” Iol laid a hand on the older man’s shoulder. “You have outdone yourself this evening.” He glanced around to make sure no one was within hearing range. “Even old Second Seat of the House of Pirri was seen to crack a smile tonight.” Straightening, he resettled his tunic. “Keep an eye on things, Latrell. I’ll see what we can do with our mysterious bard.”

A Cover, A Blurb, And A Lady. Windmaster Legend #mfrwauthor #mfrwhook

A forbidden love. An impossible quest. The accusation of witchcraft. Can love survive?

Today’s hook isn’t a snippet, but rather a cover reveal and a blurb reveal for Windmaster Legend, my upcoming March fantasy romance release.

First the Blurb:

Fate conspired to keep Iol and Pelra apart. Friendship is allowed between members of competing trading houses, but nothing more. He loves the sea and wants his own ship. She hates the deep blue and has worked too hard to allow her dreams to be sidetracked. Despite a beautiful woman on his arm every night, Leod wanted the one he couldn’t have—Pelra. His kin on the ruling council did more than put him on the fast track to his own ship. It provided him the power to fulfill his desires, or to ruin those who refused him.

Exiled to distant posts, given impossible challenges, and subject to Leod’s machinations, Iol and Pelra only have the hope of a future together to sustain them. But can their love survive the accusation of witchcraft?

Now the Cover.

Without further fanfare, I present Lady Pelra of the House of Pirri. A talented musician, leader of wagon trains, and skilled in trading and contracts.

Windmaster Legend - Available March 11th at books2read.com/Windmaster-Legend

Next week, more on the star-crossed lovers, Pelra and Iol.

~till next time, Helen
