Intellectual Property Law Amazon Giveaway

Given the interest in my two short story collection giveaways, I thought I’d do a giveaway of my Intellectual Property book as well. It will run until Amazon chooses a winner (probably a few days). If you are interested, you can enter here: https://giveaway.amazon.com/p/d07a803485634cb0

Unlike my law-related college textbooks and scholarly articles, this book is intended as a primer in the law of intellectual property for the general public. It should be of particular interest to authors, artists, librarians, entrepreneurs, managers and inventors. Unfortunately, unlike most of my other Kindle titles, this one does not appear to be available for library purchase for reasons I cannot fathom. The paperback version, however, is distributed to libraries so that you could request your library purchase the book if you’d like to see the full paperback version. (The Kindle edition omits a significant amount of material in the appendices that would not be readable on the small Kindle screen. The primary text, however, is the same in both the Kindle and oversized (approximately 9.5″ by 11″) paperback versions.

Second chance giveaway fora copy of my Mindscapes short story collection

This is the second giveaway – the first ended after one day with a winner notified (and 500 entrants). Try again? Please share if you are not interested in speculative fiction or science fiction. The ten short stories in this collection are not intended only for SF fans. Though a couple may fit into the hard and soft SF categories, most are speculative fiction hard to pigeonhole–and all are in some form about the human condition, about the interplay between (and nature of) dreams and reality, and about the duality of the human spirit in the eternal struggle between the divine and the profane that helps to define us all, for better or worse. As in life, you will find hope and despair, honor and avarice, the pain of unrequited love, the tragedy of lives destroyed in search of truth in all the wrong places, the comedy of hubris in the fatuous, the terrible sacrifices made in the name of friendship and the indomitability of the human spirit that refuses to surrender when all hope is lost. If you give these stories the chance, I hope they will do more than provide a few hours of light entertainment and leave you thinking about things that actually matter. (Beyond perhaps being thankful that the author has a good day job that keeps him busy and prevents him from writing too many of these . . .

Free until 1/31/2017 — Of Pain and Ecstasy: Collected Poems

The eBook version of my small book of poems (Of Pain and Ecstasy) is free through the end of January through Smashwords here: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/181370. It will also be available free of charge in a couple of days through B&N and iBooks. It is the least consequential of all my inconsequential books. But there is more of me in it (and in my short story collection) than in all of my combined published works. I’ll do an expanded edition as soon as time allows (read, not any time soon but with some luck before I die). For now, it has the saving grace of being brief . . . and for this month, also free. Smile

Unsung Heroes: Felipe

This is a rough, unedited reading of a poem I wrote days after my dad’s death in February. I seldom write poetry these days, as I’ve mentioned in other posts. But in times of unbearable pain and unbridled joy, now and throughout my life, I return to my roots.

This is in rough form both in its written form and especially in my reading. It retains the blank verse format (in quatrains) of my prior “Unsung Heroes” poem about my grandparents from my Of Pain and Ecstasy collection. It was written in one sitting, in one of the days of my life. It was read in one sitting as well with interruptions only when I could not continue to read. It is therapy for me and a very inarticulate, poor effort at sharing a few fragments of a worthy life known only to a very few still alive who can appreciate my loss and my need to have him remembered.

You can click here for a simple YouTube non-video (the only easy way to share the audio file, such as it is.)

A link to the written version of the poem and additional background information is available on my LinkedIn page is available here.

End of Days free until August 31

06959-91eod5tdnol-_sl1500_

My most disturbing (and I fear prescient) short story from my Minscapes collection is free through the end of August in all leading eBook formats (click here), and will also be available for free download from B&N and iBooks.

This short story poses a novel theory as to the role of black holes in both the creation and destruction of an endless number of universes that coexist in an incomprehensibly complex multiverse. It is a cautionary tale about the arrogance of scientists who are the cosmic equivalent of amoebas attempting to discern the secrets of the universe by thoroughly examining within the limits of their perception the drop of pond scum they inhabit. It is also a cautionary tale about the ability of determined, well-funded terrorists to begin the process that will inexorably lead to the destruction of our corner of the multiverse by the creative use of materials at their disposal.

The end is very, very near and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it.

My reading of the shortest story, “Justice”, is also available on YouTube, in a cold reading that contrasts with the audiobook Audible version of my Mindscapes collection which was professionally read and produced by Dale Wilcox. My version can be found here.
