Book review now up!
Good morning, Write Edge readers! I’ve posted my latest book review for you. Today I share my thoughts on the sci-fi/tech novel The Future is Yours by Dan Frey. Here’s the opening to my review:
Two friends create a piece of technology that they think will be the next gamechanger in Silicon Valley. As they work on the details, however, their friendship and other relationships—not to mention the fate of the world—are put at risk. Author Dan Frey tries to keep the mood lighthearted but also keeps his readers at arm’s length in the unsuccessful novel The Future is Yours.

Last week of February!
Good morning, Write Edge readers. It’s the last full week of February. This year is slipping past us in the blink of an eye. Let’s hope we’re moving toward better things.
For those who are pursuing a life passion, we’re certainly encouraged and would do well to stay in touch with those goals. To keep moving toward them, as it were. This week’s motivational quote goes right to the heart of that. It mentions writers specifically, but I think you could substitute any creative outlet here:
“If you read good books, when you write, good books will come out of you.”—Natalie Goldberg
Good writing, like other skills, takes a lot of practice and time. Every month, on the last Monday, I share some pieces that made an impact on me. That means today it’s time for our regular writers’ showcase. Check out some fun pieces that run the gamut of emotions: melancholic; romantic; wistful; even creepy. Read all of them now on The Write Edge Writing Workshop!
Last week on Instagram I shared the book I’m going to be reviewing this week. On Wednesday I’ll let you know what I thought of The Future is Yours by Dan Frey. Find out how this #bookreviewpreview turned out on The Write Edge Bookshelf!
On Thursday, I return to the Bookshelf for the last installment of Thursday R.E.A.D.s for this quarter. All month I’ve been doing a deep dive into The Test by Sylvain Neuvel. Come back to see what I thought of this novella in the role of Dreamer.
Finally, at the end of the week, we go back to parenting adventures and Growth Chart. Find out what the kids and I have been up to in the last month. See the latest installment on Friday!

Book review up!
Good morning, Write Edge readers! I’ve posted my latest book review for you. Today I’m sharing my thoughts on the recent release The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Meissner. Here’s the opening to my review:
A woman moves across the country to get a new start in life. What begins as a situation with minor quirks becomes an earth-shattering reality, in more ways than one. Author Susan Meissner excels both in historical fact and compelling fiction in her newest book The Nature of Fragile Things.

Writing and thinking…
Hello, Write Edge readers, and happy snowy Monday! Here in Central Illinois, as I write this, my husband is battling wind and snow blowing all around to shovel the driveway after spending the day taking care of his patients. It’s coming down pretty fast out there, and we’re sitting tight through subzero temperatures. I hope all of you are warm and safe wherever you might be.
Thankfully, writing is the kind of life passion that can happen no matter how miserable the weather might be outside. To that end, this week’s motivational quote reminds us that those of us who are pursuing these big goals are always engaged with them:
“For a writer life consists of either writing or thinking about writing.”—Eugene Lonesco
I’ve posted this week’s short story. It’s actually something that’s been on my mind for a little while, and I might pursue it as a larger project at some point. For now, here’s an excerpt:
Both men took their places, and Marcus sat back with fingers tented.
“So, tell me why a young single man such as yourself wants to move here.”
Sameer smiled wryly. “How do you know I’m single?”

In the middle of the week, I’ll share a brand new review with you. This week I’m letting you know what I thought of The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Meissner. Check out that review on Wednesday on The Write Edge Bookshelf!
All month long, I’m taking a deep dive into Sylvain Neuvel’s novella The Test for Thursday R.E.A.D.s. Find out what I thought about this slim book as an Author on Thursday in the latest installment of this analysis.
Finally, Friday, it’s back to Instagram. I don’t know if I’ll be able to get any worthwhile pictures of the snow this week, but I’ll give it a try. Find out what else is going on in my corner of the world, both reading and non-reading-wise, on Instagram.
Wear a mask; stay socially distant; wash your hands; find out about the vaccine; and for heaven’s sake, bundle up out there!
Have a great week, readers!

Hello, Write Edge readers! I’ve posted my second installment of Thursday R.E.A.D.s. Book review up!
Good morning, Write Edge readers! I’ve posted my latest book review for you. Today I’m sharing my thoughts on The Love Proof by Madeleine Henry. Here’s the opening to my review:
Two college students find true love and vow to stay together forever. When one of them makes a drastic decision, however, the other does everything she can to find a way to prove the tangibility of their love. Author Madeleine Henry intertwines science and feelings in the thoughtful, touching novel The Love Proof.

Daring to go forward…
Hello, Write Edge readers! Before any of you think anything dramatic has happened, the title of today’s blog post is a simple reference to the fact that it’s so bone-crackingly cold here Central Illinois that I’d rather curl up under a blanket with a book than do any writing. Yet, I have to dare to go forward with my writing dreams, including revisions and brainstorming and all that entails. After all, no one else is going to accomplish my writing dreams for me, right?
To that end, here’s this week’s motivational quote. I don’t make a conscious decision to match these with how I’m feeling on a particular day or even the stories I write every Monday. Yet somehow it all comes together in a serendipitous way. This is a wonderful life lesson as well as a lesson for artistic endeavors:
“To be passive is to let others decide for you. To be aggressive is to decide for others. To be assertive is to decide for yourself. And to trust that there is enough, that you are enough.”—Edith Eva Eger
Next, this week’s short story. It’s about a girl who decides she’s enough, even if no one else sees her that way. Check out the excerpt:
She thought about hiking boots—her mother’s, specifically. When her parents moved them to the city, her mother had taken the boots she’d worn on that last hike and put them in a box for charity. The night before Mom drove all the donation items to the Salvation Army, Ruby sneaked down to the garage and rummaged through the boxes.

Next, it’s the month of love, and on Wednesday I’ll share a brand new book review with you about a book with love as its central theme. Come back in the middle of the week to find out what I thought about The Love Proof by Madeleine Henry. You’ll get that review on The Write Edge Bookshelf!
It’s the first quarter of the year, which means a new Thursday R.E.A.D.s analysis. This month I’m diving deeper into The Test by Sylvain Neuvel. Come back on Thursday to find out what I thought about this book as an Editor.
Finally, on Friday, it’s Instagram again! See what I’ll be reading for next week’s book review as well as other fun pictures from my life as a member of the publishing industry, a mom, a friend, and just a regular person. :>
