Worldbuilding 14.2 – Silver
Today is a new day for a Worldbuilding article. It takes me several days to produce one of these articles, as I do a lot of research into them, to which I am glad to do. There is a lot of satisfaction when I can bring it all together, and enjoy the feedback, especially on reddit.
Today we discuss Silver. Silver is part of the 7 Metals of Antiquity, which are the known metals of the world until the 1800’s. I plan to cover each of these as they are the most likely metals to show up in your worl...

Worldbuilding #15 – Concrete
So far we’ve discussed metals for the worldbuilding series, today we take a sidestep and look at another element important to our society, Concrete.
It’s hard to go anywhere today and not see some form of concrete, whether in building, roads, bridges, or a vast variety of other things. Like metal, it has been one of the key elements that has shaped our modern society, starting nearly 300 years ago. However, it is not a new concept and has been around since prehistoric times.
First off, conc...

IWSG – The Curse of Editing
It’s Wednesday again, that means it is time for IWSG. The last month has been hard on me. Of all the things we do as writers, I think the one thing I hate most is editing. Many will say marketing, but for me, I’d rather do marketing.
For the last month I’ve been doing editing, and it has been quite challenging. My disability doesn’t make it easy on me, often having to take long breaks that can last for a day, not feeling good most of the time. But I am thankful for the attention to detail my...

Worldbuilding #14.1 – Copper
Welcome to the second article of my new Worldbuilding series. Today we discuss one of the most important metals: Copper. Copper is really the unsung hero when it comes to metals. While noted for its use when there were only a few known metals in the world, it soon fell out of favor over time, only for it to resurface and the is metal responsible for the modern age of electronics. However, it is not just electronics that make Copper so valuable, but how it reacts to water as well.
Of all metal...

Worldbuilding #14 – Metals
Welcome to the first article of my new Worldbuilding series. This, in many ways, is a sequel to my previous Worldbuilding series. Unlike the last one, which focused on Geography and Map Making, this series will cover everything else that goes into Worldbuilding. The goal with this is to be able to answer questions that many other Worldbuilding sources will ask you. This series will help educate you on a variety of topics that are important to designing your world that you likely never thought...

#IWSG – To Patreon or Not Patreon
Welcome to another edition of Internet Writer’s Support Group. A time honoured tradition for my site where I reveal my thoughts and feelings as a writer. Sometimes those thoughts are good, other times, not so good. Today, I will discuss my new Patreon account. What is it, why am I doing it, and how this will affect me as a writer.
There is a bit of a stigma when one does Patreon. Many see it as selling out and it has certain gotten some bad raps in the past. Many see it as just a means to...

Madness Worldbuilding New Series Intro
Welcome to the next Madness Worldbuilding series. For a long while I have been promising this series, and today I get to realize my dream.
My goal with this series is to bring you a great resource of information that has been my pleasure to bring in the past. It has always been my belief that when you write an educational article, you must identify the how and why beyond the initial what, and I will continue that work with this series.
Before I started my map making series, I had a few ques...

Literary Terms – Catastrophe
Here’s a word we often hear. But do you know what it means? Most people would say something really bad, and they’d be right, but like most definitions, there is more to it than that. It has another meaning rich with history and today we will explore that to help us understand what a catastrophe is when we write, and how it can be both a positive and negative thing.
This is a rather difficult topic to discuss, as the word in modern usage is something negative, though once upon a time, it cou...

Literary Terms – Anti-Climax
Welcome to another Literary Term. Many of my terms are things you haven’t heard of before, but once in awhile, they are terms that you have heard, or at least should have heard.
Anti-climax is a great words that describes a great plot device that, like a magic trick, you have to be careful in its execution. A poor execution can lead to a lot of angry viewers.
Anti-Climax, also written as Anti-Climatic, is an interesting element to a book. To understand this, we need to take...

ANNOUNCEMENT: Moving to a New Server
To fix some of the performance issues I’ve had, I worked out something with GoDaddy to improve performance. For that, I am having to basically move my site. It will still be the same, except all the weblinks will be altered. I will try to update where I can. So if you come to this site by mistake, please go to http://writing.chrisvotey.com
This site will be up until April 17th.
Thank you for everyone who helped make this site a success, and while everything will be similar, the new server is...
