Play For It, all a game

bib-4-cover-3Ooh, some men just make me angry! Especially when they think women are pawns in their game. Am I right?

Excerpt from Play For It

“Erika appears to have made a miraculous recovery,” Edward said as he took the seat opposite Jared at the table. “She and I have another date tonight.”

Jared ground his teeth. He hated that he’d not only had a taste of her and been forced to walk away, but he’d driven Erika right into the arms of a jerk who only wanted her for arm candy.

“You better treat her well.”

“Oh, I always treat women well. One night with me and she will not remember your name.”

Jared knew the guy was trying to get a rise out of him, but it didn’t stop him from reacting. “Don’t you dare touch her, you asshole.”

Edward lifted an eyebrow. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me. Don’t. Fucking. Touch. Her.”

“I do not remember asking your permission. I believe Erika is the only one who has a say in that.”

“What do you want, man?” Jared asked, feeling desperate.

“Want?”

Jared nodded. “Want. What do you want? I’ll do anything.”

Edward contemplated Jared’s offer for several long seconds. “I doubt there is anything you have that I would want.”

Jared waited to see if Edward would say anything else, knowing he wouldn’t have a chance at protecting Erika.

“Although, we could play for her.”

“Excuse me?”

Edward shrugged. “Play. A game. If I win, you back off. You stay away from her. You cut ties completely, including leaving this job, and stop interfering. If you win, I’ll never set foot in this casino again.”

“Erika would kill us both if she found out.”

Edward shrugged. “Then we don’t tell her.”

Jared shook his head. “I can’t do it. She’s not property.”

“No, she is not,” Edward agreed. “But you are in love with her. And if you want to ever see her again, you might want to play. Besides,” Edward added smugly, “when have I ever beat you?”

Q&A Sunday: Something New

I spent the day picking out pumpkins, riding in hay, and getting lost in corn today. It was a great day with my kids, parents, sister, brother-in-law, and niece. We all had fun, but it was chilly! Fall has definitely arrived!

While I was out, I realized I never posted today’s question! Oops!

Jeannie asked…

Are you always working on a story?

Ha! Yes, usually more than one!

I have more ideas than I have time and am always plotting something out.

Right now, I’m working on three different projects. Wanna hear about them?

bib-5-cover-1Go For It will be available November 1. I’m finalizing that one now so it’s ready for the release. I really like the story. Molly is sweet and unsure of herself. Owen is cocky and completely bowled over by Molly. It’s been a lot of fun watching them fall in love!

The other two I’m working on are just getting started. I’m not going to share much, but I’m so excited for them. I’m writing a brand new series that’ll be available in 2017. The first book will be offered as part of an anthology for three months with all the proceeds going to support March of Dimes. It’ll come out in February. The second book will be available in March.

The only thing I’ll tell you about the series is it’s set in a winery in the Finger Lakes, a region of New York known for its amazing wines. The first book is a prequel, set 15 years before the second book. I’ve been planning this series for a long time and am beyond excited to share it with you… soon!

Beyond those I am actively working on, I am always plotting. I’ve been thinking about the rest of the Big & Beautiful stories, and the series that’s going to come after that. I also have plans for another series that I’ll write beyond those and have started thinking about that one. I’m always planning, thinking, or writing at least one thing at a time!

Thanks so much, Jeannie, for your question! If you have a question, send me an email (mary (at) maryethompson (dot) com) with Q&A in the subject, or post it in the comments below, and I’ll answer your question right here on the blog!

Surrender the Wind by Elizabeth St. Michel

Please say hi to my friend, Elizabeth St. Michel! She and I met about a year ago and I’m honored to have her here today!

Tell us a little about yourself. How long have you been writing?

Elizabeth:  Always. Whether in my head or on paper there has always a story to unfold. As a young girl, indoctrinated into several family businesses, I relieved the boredom of daily tasks by daydreaming. Suddenly every customer who marched into our stores became a larger than life hero or heroine with an adventuresome past, present and future.

Yet I was handicapped as a storyteller. Storytelling and writing are two different things. I had to learn the craft of writing, and that process was cultivated over twenty-six years.

Fast forward. My first book, The Winds of Fate won numerous Romance Writer of America writing awards, and then out of ten thousand worldwide authors seized the quarter-finalist position for the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. The Winds of Fate went on to become a number-one hit on the Amazon bestseller lists. So all those isolated years of writing proved I must have been doing something right.

My second novel, Surrender the Wind, won “the Catherine” and “the Marlene,” the respective Romance Writer’s Awards of Toronto and Washington, DC. I am also the recipient of the prestigious Holt Medallion Award in honor of literary excellence in romance writing. Born and raised in western New York, I am the mother of five wonderful children.

elizabethstmichel_surrenderthewind_ecover2_comp02-2Where did your idea come from for your latest release, Surrender the Wind ?

E: In the southern tier of New York, the rail lines were the highways that led captured Confederate prisoners to Elmira Prisoner of War Camp.  Known as ‘Hellmira’ this camp housed thousands of prisoners under brutal conditions and existed the North’s answer to Andersonville. A local news story told the tale of a dead Confederate drummer boy’s body thrown from the train. Of course some Christian people gave him a burial. So I thought, what if…

Tell us about Surrender the Wind.

E: When Confederate General John Daniel Rourke is severely wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness, he’s captured and sent to a prison camp. On his way there, Union soldiers mistake him for dead and toss him from the train into the New York countryside, where he lands at the feet of Catherine Fitzgerald, a schoolmistress.

Rourke wakes to find the mysterious and strong-spirited beauty nursing him back to health. He’s intrigued but unaware of her true identity as the heiress to the Union’s ammunitions manufacturer, and their fiery battle of wits and wills commences.

Yet when outside forces begin to envelop them in a larger conspiracy, their own war begins. Torn between family loyalties and manipulated by a powerful leader from the Irish underworld, Catherine and Rourke will have to fight on both sides of the secession line to win the most significant battle of all: the fight for their love. http://hyperurl.co/qnu96k

elizabethstmichel_thewindsoffate800What is The Winds of Fate about?

E: London 1685 To thwart her uncle’s plans to marry her to a repugnant duke and secure her independence, Claire Hamilton marries condemned felon, Devon Blackmon, making a wicked promise. The man is scheduled to hang, so what is wrong with a little white lie that would be a balm for his soul?

Beyond her wildest imagination, he escapes, emerging as the Black Devil; leader among pirates, commanding his Caribbean kingdom and seeking revenge against the beauty who betrayed him.

The Winds of Fate is a swashbuckling adventure and emotionally fulfilling tale of love lost and retribution.  myBook.to/TheWindsofFate

The Winds of Fate “…captivating romance that takes us to the world of seventeenth-century London…Sexual tension and legal and familial intrigue ensue with the reader cheering on the lovely pair.” –Publisher’s Weekly

What manuscript are you working on now?

E:  I’m happily immersed on a series, introducing the powerful Duke of Rutland, a widower and his strong-willed offspring. The Duke has formidable enemies determined to destroy his family.

My first installment sweeps from the glittering salons of London across the Caribbean Sea to the Colonies during the American Revolution. This captivating tale centers on the Duke’s rebellious daughter, Abigail past marriageable age and yearning for adventure. One black night the fortunes of the Rutland family are changed forever…

Kidnapped, Abigail awakens to find her father’s enemy has cut off her hair; bound her breasts, dressed her like a boy and locked her in a hold of a ship. When her ship is captured by notorious American Privateer, Captain Jacob Thorne her troubles really begin. Falling in love with an enemy of her country is a thing she cannot do.

Captain Jacob Thorne is set on revenge against England and it aristocracy. He raids the British coasts, plundering any quarry ripe for his choosing, stunned to discover his new cabin boy is a ravishing beauty. From that first stolen sensuous kiss, a wild fire is ignited and he swears to possess her… When he learns she is none other than the Duke of Rutland’s daughter and cousin to the King will he really be able to give her up or will his newfound love for her rule?

How do you get your ideas?

E: Concepts and inspiration come far and wide. Sometimes hiking in the mountains behind my home, and listening to the east wind call to the west wind. Sometimes walks beneath undulating palms, listening to the rhythmic sounds of gentle surf beat upon a golden crescent of sand. Sometimes sipping coffee while my family gathers or sitting in a crowded airport. As often as not, I feel the total of life’s experiences becomes a bridge to ideas.

Do you find it a challenge to put your ideas into a novel?

E: With every book I write, I challenge myself with a situation I have never written about before, and that’s when I have to do a lot of planning and dreaming. That’s the most fun part of the job. The difficult part follows. Standing on the edge of an abyss, I hold my breath to get those initial words flowing in order to cross the divide. Over time, I have discovered the real essence of writing a completed novel is concentration and self-discipline.

What inspires your writing muse?

E:  I wish I knew. I would bottle the formula and sell it for a good price.

If your book was turned into a movie, what actor and actress would you choose to play your hero and heroine?

E:  I don’t know, but for my director, I would like to clone a hybrid of James Cameron, (Titanic) J.J. Abrams, (Star Trek Into Darkness), Nick Cassavetes, (The Notebook), and Joe Wright, (Pride and Prejudice).

Are you a plotter or a panster?

E: I’m a big time plotter. I research and prewrite, diagraming all my scenes then analyze and create character charts. I review both feminine and masculine journeys, detailing various goals, conflicts and motivations. By the time I’m ready to start writing, I have a pretty steady roadmap, yet sometimes I surprise myself with some delightful detours.

When did you first get interested in the historical romance genre?

E:  Growing up, I spent part of my summers with a dear aunt who was a bit of a hoarder. Literally, she had books stacked from the floor to the ceiling and it was a miracle her home did not collapse from the weight. She inspired my love of reading, first introducing me to the  Classic Comic Books, chucked full of fairy tales then acquainted me with my first historical romance novel, The Black Moth by Georgette Heyer. How could I not be hooked forever?

Why do you like to write Historical Romance?

E:  As an avid fan of history, I love painting on the larger canvas that a historical allows. I enjoy, creating strong heroes and heroines that I drag through the bowels of hell. They come up fighting because they are made for each other.

Mainly, I love to make my readers happy.

Play For It, release day

bib-4-cover-3I’ve been waiting to release this book for years. I’d originally intended to write and publish it over two years ago, but plans changed and life got in the way. It was always there, hanging over me, waiting for me to do something. I’m so happy it’s finally available!

Jared and Erika shared one night together. A night neither of them would ever forget, but both regretted. He knew he didn’t deserve her, and she knew she’d never love another man the way she loved him. Seeing each other every day was tough, but when Erika starts to move on, it becomes unbearable for both of them. Jared doesn’t want her to be with someone she doesn’t love, and he sets out to show her how she deserves to be treated. But first, a little game…

Excerpt from Play For It

Erika lowered her cards to the table and bit her lip as Jared looked at them. His eyes flashed up to hers, victorious for her, then darkened when they slid to her lips.

No. Fucking. Way. He wanted to kiss her?

Just as quickly as it came, the expression vanished and cheer was back on his face. “Nice hand, E. I knew all those lessons would pay off one day.”

Erika congratulated herself on beating him for the first time ever. It was possible he let her win, but Erika saw his cards. It wasn’t like he refused to show her. Plus, Jared had never let her win before, why would he start now.

He grabbed the deck again and started shuffling, pausing to kick off his shoes, then dealt them new cards. Erika had a king, queen, ten, seven, and two, and only the two and king were the same suit. She chewed her lip again and ditched the two and seven, hoping she could get something that would help.

Jared handed her two cards back, a king and a seven. She kicked herself for getting rid of the seven, but she’d been trying to get a straight. Hell, even if she wasn’t she still would have gotten rid of it.

Erika lowered her cards first. “A pair of kings.”

“Beats me,” Jared said. “I can’t get any good cards tonight.”

He messed with something under the table then pulled all the cards together to shuffle them. Erika was surprised and a bit giddy that she was actually beating him. That he was there. It was going to be a good night.

Erika won the next round and Jared flashed her a smirk before he reached behind himself and stripped off his t-shirt.

“What the hell are you doing?” Erika screamed, trying not to look at his chest. Jared wasn’t huge, but he was strong. She’d fit perfectly against his chest, his muscles providing a pillow she wished she could replicate. The dark hair that covered his chest and narrowed as it traveling south reminded her of the way she’d traced that path with her tongue the night they spent together.

He smirked. “Strip poker.”

Q&A Sunday: Down time

It’s the weekend. I love my weekends. I get to do whatever I want, usually! Vicki and Aliana asked…

Aside from spending time with your family, what is your favorite activity when you’re not writing?

I have a lot of things I enjoy. The short list…

Reading

Watching sports

Swimming

Drinking wine (does that count?)

But I do love my job and spending time with my family. I write frequently, and if I’m not writing, I’m usually plotting. It’s fun for me. I don’t feel like it’s work, which makes it enjoyable for me to write.

Of course, my kids are six and eight so a lot of my time is spent with them. My daughter takes gymnastics and my son is currently playing soccer. We’ve also done tee ball, ice skating (which I enjoy with them), swimming, and hockey. I’m sure more will come.

img_6173But during the rare moments that the kids are playing well together, or at school and I am not working, I love to read. It’s always been my favorite hobby. I read multiple books each week. My favorite genre is contemporary romance, but I also read a lot of books about being a better writer, marketing, finances, business, and raising kids. If you put it in a book, I’ll be willing to check it out. I’m a visual person so reading is great for me. I can re-read what I need to and it moves at my pace. I’ve never listened to audio books but I hesitate because I think my mind would wander. It’s also why I don’t like watching videos – I either get distracted or lost!

I’m also a bit of a sports junkie. Fall is great because I love football. Saturdays we watch USC Gamecocks (where both hubby and I graduated) and Sundays we cheer for the Buffalo Bills. We also watch hockey on TV, but prefer to catch other sports in person. Baseball, soccer, lacrosse, just about anything!

Every week I swim with my dad, which is a good chance to spend some time with him. I’d like to swim more than I do, but for now once a week is all I do. But wine… that’s a regular occurrence in my house! It’s also fueling my new series coming next year about a group of siblings who inherit a vineyard. What could be better than wine and romance?

Thanks so much, Vicki and Aliana, for your question! If you have a question, send me an email (mary (at) maryethompson (dot) com) with Q&A in the subject, or post it in the comments below, and I’ll answer your question right here on the blog!

Excerpt From Till Life Do Us Part

“Detective, please, don’t think I’m raving, but I have to ask. Do you know someone called Mabel?”

The man riveted Barbara with his dark blue eyes for a moment.

Barbara cringed inside. He’ll rebuke me.

The man passed a hand over his face and nodding, he answered, “Yes, I know a Mabel. My… my wife.”

“How long ago did she pass away?”

In a voice that was more than a little surprised he asked, “How on earth did you know she’s dead?”

“She’s here,” Barbara replied in a small voice.

His eyebrows shot up in disbelief. The steel in his voice was hard to miss. “What? What are you talking about?” He spun round and looked at the apparently empty space behind him.

Tell him I no longer suffer, Barbara heard Mabel’s voice.

Detective Fisher was still staring blankly around him.

“She wants me to tell you she no longer suffers. She hopes you’ve found in your heart the power to forgive her for committing suicide… for jumping off the bridge.”

The detective looked straight into Barbara’s eyes. The grief she saw in them was almost palpable.

Play For It, interrupted

bib-4-cover-3It’s so easy to get lost in a kiss. To forget everything around you and ignore the rest of the world. Until the world comes barging in and interrupts you…

Excerpt from Play For It

Erika’s brain stuttered over and over again, like a car running out of gas. She bounced between unable to believe Jared was actually kissing her, and unable to stop kissing him back. She needed him. He was going to hurt her again, she knew that, but she had a hard time caring.

She felt his erection pressed against her belly. It would be so easy to drop to her knees and take him into her mouth. To feel him come apart just from her touch. Her hand slid from his neck and trailed down his body, dancing over the muscles hidden by his clothes. When she came to his fly, she arced her body away so she could cup him through his pants. He jerked in her hand and moaned.

God, she’d missed that sound.

“Give me a minute!” someone yelled from right outside the door. The door right behind Jared. The door that led to the outside world. To work. To life. To other people.

Erika jerked back from Jared. It took him a few extra seconds to realize she wasn’t kissing him any more. His eyes slowly lifted to her face.

How dare he?

Q&A Sunday: Favorite Season

The weather finally got cool enough yesterday for me to put my flip flops away. It’s a mixed blessing for me. But I felt like it was time to answer this question from Vicki…

What is your favorite season???

Fall.

Hands down.

Why? I know you want to know why.

Summer is my least favorite season. It’s hot and I get sunburned and I don’t like it. Now, I love to swim, but I grew up spoiled with an indoor pool and don’t love swimming outdoors. In Buffalo, the weather is only good enough to swim two months, if we’re lucky, so I can’t even say swimming is a draw to summer.

fallen-yellow-leavesBut… when fall hits, I’m ready for summer to be over. I want the cooler weather and the beautiful colors of the changing leaves. I’m ready for the end of the year. I’m ready for the holidays. I’m ready for football and soccer and comfort foods and new tv shows.

After fall, I like spring. It’s still not too hot and my birthday is in spring. It’s hard to argue with that one. After spring is winter because the cold doesn’t bother me. I think if we had a backyard the kids could play in, winter might bump up to second or even first place for me. Unfortunately, we’re still in our apartment so winter requires a lot of supervision. One day…

For now though, I’m thrilled to be in fall. I’m watching football and new episodes of shows. I’m leaving my patio door open to get some fresh air. I’m enjoying the cooler weather for a change. I know it’ll be cold before long, but right now it’s pretty perfect for me!

Thanks so much, Vicki, for your question! If you have a question, send me an email (mary (at) maryethompson (dot) com) with Q&A in the subject, or post it in the comments below, and I’ll answer your question right here on the blog!

Life is so much Better In Bed

I’ve done a lot of skipping around this year with what I’ve released. Next year… well, next year will be a bit more logical. But for the last three months of 2016, I’m finishing up the Better In Bed series. We all know life is so much Better In Bed, right?

bib-1-cover-10If you haven’t read this series, I wanted to introduce it to you. It’s the first series I wrote, but it didn’t start out as a series. Cat’s story is first, Wait For It. Cat’s a virgin who feels like she’s waited so long to lose her virginity that her expectations can’t possibly add up to reality. She’s hesitant to sleep with just anyone and decides she’s waited that long, she’ll just wait until she’s married.

Enter Ryder. Sexy. Biker. Single dad. Yeah, he’s hot. She describes him as sex on a stick. Cat has trouble resisting Ryder. Ryder has trouble resisting Cat. For two people trying to figure out where their lives are headed, and if they’re headed there together, it’s a fun, easy read.

bib-2-cover-3The second book, Work For It, is Cat’s best friend, Lizzy. Lizzy is married, but thinks her husband, Aaron, might be cheating on her. There’s no romance left in their marriage. They barely speak to each other and when they do it’s about the kids. Lizzy feels unsettled and thinks Aaron doesn’t love her. So she does what any woman would do…

She sets out to change his mind and seduce him.

bib-3-cover-1Fight For It is the third book in the series. Jenny is Lizzy’s younger sister. She just graduated college and left her boyfriend there where he’s finishing grad school. Jenny is floundering, unsure where she’s going in life, like so many people just out of college. When she blows a tire on the side of the road, Logan comes to her rescue. In more ways that one.

These two dance around each other, back and forth as both try to figure out where things are going. The shit really hits the fan when Jenny’s boyfriend shows up.

bib-4-cover-3Play For It will be out October 4! Erika is hurt after a falling out with her best friend, Jared, who she happens to be in love with. Jared told her sleeping together was a mistake… the morning after… and Erika cuts ties. Three months later, she’s finally had enough and can’t resist when a sexy British guy wants to take her away.

Jared gets jealous and the two men play for the right to date Erika. Only Erika isn’t sure which one she wants to win!

Go For It is Molly’s story of uprooting her peaceful, boring life by marrying a guy she barely knows. Owen thinks Molly is the perfect woman to settle him down, but Molly thinks marrying Owen is just the craziness her life needs.

In Wish For It, Molly’s sister, Allison, takes Cole home with her after he’s too drunk to take care of himself. When Cole wakes up, he thinks Allison took advantage of him and insults her by offering her money to keep her quiet. Allison won’t take the bait and their game of cat and mouse begins.

The last book in the series is Drink For It. Heather avoided Luke’s since their one and only night together, but when she’s forced back, she can’t stay away from the man himself. Luke hasn’t been able to get Heather out of his mind, but when she walks back into his bar, he doesn’t want to let her out of his life again.

I hope you’ll check out all the series. These are shorter books that are quick, fun reads. They’re only going to be available in ebook version, but that helps me keep the prices down! Catch up on the series now before Play For It comes out October 4!

Puffy & Precious, such a tease

BB9 Cover 3What do you do when a man sweet enough to cancel a date to help you is ready for bed?

Tease him, of course! And make him bed for it!

Excerpt from Puffy & Precious

It was after midnight when we pulled the chocolate pound cake out of the oven. Max’s kitchen was covered in flour dust, sugar crystals, and dessert. We made red velvet cookies, rhubarb pie bites, blueberry doughnuts, chocolate dipped marshmallow stuffed strawberry pops, cherry fudge, cannoli dip with shell chips, and red and blue sprinkled vanilla cake pops.

I was exhausted.

I stifled a yawn and hoped Graham wouldn’t take it as a sign that I wanted him to leave. After the first orgasm he gave me I felt like I could stay up all night long to bake and have sex, but it was fading.

“You’re tired, aren’t you?”

“No,” I said on a yawn. “Well, maybe a little. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to finish what we started earlier.”

“I don’t want to mess up your meeting, Ab.”

I wanted to hear him call me that when he was inside me. Over me. Under me. I just wanted him.

“It would mess with my meeting even more if I went in there this wound up.”

“So I’m just a stress reliever?” he joked.

“Best one I’ve ever met.”

“Do we need to cover any of this stuff? Or put it in the fridge?”

I shook my head. “It’ll be fine until morning. I, on the other hand, will not. But if you’re not up to it, I’m a big girl, I can take care of myself.”

“Not gonna happen, Ab. Get your ass in that bedroom.”

I whirled on him, hands on hips. “Excuse me?”

“Please, Abby. Don’t make me beg. I’m not above it.”

He got down on his knees and was still almost eye level with me. He pressed his head to my chest and nuzzled. I laughed and he did it again. My nipples tried to say hi through my shirt and Graham turned his head. I watched, mesmerized, as his lips closed over one of my nipples. His arms circled me, one hand splayed across my back, holding me in place. My hands went to his head, securing him to me.

He drew my nipple into his mouth and swiped his tongue over it. The cotton of my tank top dulled the sensation. I needed his tongue on my skin. The night had been impossible to survive. Max’s kitchen was barely big enough for two people, but when one of them was the size of a truck, we needed a kitchen three times as big. He brushed against me every time he moved. More than once I wanted to turn off the oven and heat up the bedroom instead, but I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t nail the presentation for Mayor Ramsey.

Graham stood with his arms locked around me, his mouth still toying with my nipple. I clutched his shoulders so I wouldn’t fall and let him carry me to the bedroom.
