#BookReview Demorn: Blade of Exile by David Finn @redlantern2051

Title: Demorn: Blade of ExhileBy: David FinnGenre: FantasyRelease Date: December 4th, 2015Publisher:
Summary from Goodreads:
Demorn will go anywhere, sell her blade to the gods themselves, to resurrect her dead girlfriend's soul!

Demorn has been the exile of dead world since she was thirteen. Reality has been infected, setting up different Universes and wiping the memories of the population throughout past and present. Her birthplace, Asanti was destroyed in aftershocks. It’s known as the Fracture Event.

She belongs to the Innocents, a Clubhouse of mercenaries and assassins based inside the future city of Babelzon.

Uncovering a terrifying conspiracy of multi-dimensional demon gods hiding in plain sight, she must risk everything in a desperate quest for something bigger than a bounty if Babelzon and everything she loves are to be saved!

Review:This book started off with a bang. The main character, an epic heroin births a blade of fire from her chest. How much more exciting could it get? I found that I was quickly lost though, There was a lot of world building that was missing and I couldn't keep up with the scene changes and new magical things that had no previous explanation. I have to say though, this author has a way with words and kept me reading all the way to the end.

Bound by Duty #Playlist Guest Post by Stormy Smith and #GiveAway @stormysmith

Hi everyone! Stormy Smith here.
Music is a HUGE part of my life. I am addicted to Spotify and adore finding new artists. I spend a lot of time getting to know local artists and live shows are among my favorite places to be. When I wrote Bound by Duty I knew it would have a soundtrack. Every significant moment in my life has a song associated with it and the book I spent a year pouring myself into would be no different!
I’m a little bit of an odd duck in that I can’t actually write listening to music that has words. So, I spend my writing hours listening to classical music that helps distract my mind just enough to keep the creativity flowing without stopping the lovely voices in my head from telling me their stories. But, once I’m in the car, cleaning, or doing anything else, I’ve always got an ear out for songs. I find that the lyrics often inspire new plot lines, emotions or authentic reactions in characters.
You can check out the full Spotify soundtrack for BBD here, but here are my top ten in no particular order!
1. The One That Got Away – The Civil Wars2. Haunted – A Taylor Swift cover by Jess Moskaluke and Alex G.3. In My Veins – Andrew Belle, featuring Erin McCarley4. Hurricane – MSMR5. Clarity – A Zedd cover by Corey Gray6. Boston – Augustana7. I’mnotwaiting – Bonne Finken8. Breathe Again – Sara Bareilles9. Promising, Promises – Jon McLaughlin10. No Light, No Light – Florence and the Machine
It was really important to me to not only cover the storyline with my choices, but also the emotions of the characters. Music is really important to Amelia, my heroine, and she often lets herself get lost in it. I didn’t want to date my story by announcing the songs and artists in the book, but in my head I always knew what she was listening to.
Bound by Duty is truly a coming of age story. It’s a paranormal fantasy that explores the many layers of what makes a person themselves. Is it your family, your duty, the ones you love, the pieces of you that you can’t control or the family (i.e. friends) you choose for yourself? How do you balance the person you are with the life you want? Amelia faces all of these questions as she finds herself with her first-ever best friend – a sassy Southern girl – and her first dose of young love. But there are situations out there bigger than she ever imagined and she has to decide who she’s going to be and what she’s made of.
Synopsis for Bound by Duty: Amelia grew up in a world of half-truths. She knows she's an Elder, but has no idea what that means. Her father reminds her daily that she must maintain control, but he refuses to explain why. Even worse, she's betrothed to the prince of the Immortals and doesn't even know his name.
Finally breaking free to live a few normal years at a community college, the last thing Amelia expects is to find her best friend in a cheeky southern girl, or fall for a self-assured human who sees her for who she is, not what she will become.
As she learns more about herself, Amelia realizes the line between love and duty is a thin one. As her power continues to increase exponentially and her questions are slowly answered, Amelia must make the ultimate choice. The question is, will her head win the battle, or her heart?
If you decide to give Bound by Duty a shot, I’d love to hear the songs it brought to mind for you! Hook up with me at www.facebook.com/authorstormysmith or @stormysmith on twitter.
Excerpt:
To set the stage, Amelia Bradbury is our heroine and the center of this next scene. Amelia knows that she is an Elder and that she is betrothed to marry the prince of the Immortals. What she doesn’t know is the source of the power that continues to grow and evolve inside her and what that power will mean for her future. All Amelia wants is a little bit of time to be normal, but she’s about to meet the guy who will forever change the way she looks at herself and what she wants from life.
An excerpt from Bound by Duty:
As soon as I stepped out on the giant deck, the sea air hit my face. It tangled in my hair, whipping it around my shoulders as if playing hide and seek in the dark strands. I exhaled, not realizing I had been holding my breath. I stood there a moment, just listening to the waves beat against the sand as the tide came in. The full moon came out from behind the clouds, brightening my path and leading me to the stairs that would take me down to the beach. I didn’t hesitate. Almost leaping to the bottom, I kicked my gladiator sandals off as soon as I hit the sand and ran toward the water. Just as the tide touched my toes, the hair on the back of my neck stood up.
Someone was there. Instantly, a jolt of power raced through my veins. I tried frantically to calm it back down, to maintain control. But, against all effort, I’m sure my eyes went from their normal hazel to bright violet, as they always do when my power takes over. I stood there, staring out at the sea, trying to decide how to react. I couldn’t draw attention to myself, but I could protect myself if I had to — I had learned that much. I felt my power build; like small pinpricks of electricity racing through my veins, filling my blood inch by inch. I forced myself to soften my stiff posture, but kept my right hand open and out in front of me in case I needed to use it.
Since moving to Brighton, I’d been working to actually use my magic, but it still felt like a second person trapped inside me that I couldn’t force into compliance. Sometimes it worked with me, sometimes not. We’ve been fighting this battle for as long as I can remember and in times like these, when I didn’t know what I was dealing with, I trusted it more than myself. I stood there, my body still as my power rippled beneath the surface and cautiously probed around me, just waiting to be unleashed. I slowly started to turn around when he said, “Oh, so you’re hiding from them too, huh?”
His voice was smooth and almost melodic, with just a little fire behind it. I somehow knew he was smirking even though I couldn’t see him. The moonlight hadn’t breached the shadow from the deck where I could see his outline sitting on a picnic table. He was sitting on the top with his feet on the bench and elbows on his knees. I heard the old, weather-beaten table creak and groan as he set his feet on the ground. A shiver ran through me; he looked dangerous.
“Do I know you?” Something told me I’d seen him before. The fear that had ignited my magic instantly turned to curiosity, the danger melting to intrigue. I could actually see the thready, purple wisps spreading out, poking around, trying to get a read on him. It’s a good thing humans don’t actually see our power unless we let them. Abruptly, I turned back toward the ocean, kicking myself as I mentally drew it back in.
What am I doing?! I don’t even KNOW this guy. What if he’s...?
“You don’t have anything to worry about,” he interrupted, as if reading my thoughts. I could hear his voice coming closer, a little tentative, feeling me out.
I’m sure he thinks I’m nutcakes. Well done, Amelia. You are here to blend in, not prompt people to think you’re a freak a month into the semester.
I sighed, took a breath, and turned to face him, not realizing how close to me he now was. The full moon cast light and shadow across his body as he stood just feet from me, silent, sizing me up as I did the same to him. I drew in a quick breath as all my thoughts came together in just two words. He’s gorgeous.
I couldn’t stop my eyes from roaming. There was something tortured about him, I could feel it as easily as I felt my own curiosity building. He stood just a few feet from me, clearly trying not to be intimidating. But, between the hints of a tattoo peeking out from under his black T-shirt and the leather cuffs on his wrists, there was an intensity he couldn’t hide. He had big eyes with long lashes a girl would kill for. As my gaze followed the strong, angular features of his face, I realized he had a dimple, just on the one side that must only come out when that corner of his mouth lifted into the smirk I had heard in his voice earlier. The one he was wearing now as he watched me watching him. For some reason, that dimple changed everything; transformed him in my mind as just being a boy on a beach.

Stormy Smith calls Iowa’s capital home now, but was raised in a tiny town in the Southeast corner of the state. She grew to love books honestly, having a mom that read voraciously and instilled that same love in her. She knew quickly that stories of fantasy were her favorite, and even as an adult gravitates toward paranormal stories in any form.
Writing a book had never been an aspiration, but suddenly the story was there and couldn’t be stopped. When she isn’t working on, or thinking about, her books, Stormy’s favorite places include bar patios, live music shows, her yoga mat or anywhere she can relax with her husband or girlfriends.

Excerpt
It took most of a day to get the equipment. Fortunately, in the decades since they’d arrived, the team had created stockpiles of weapons, technology, and safe houses. They came from a time when vanishing off the streets into an underground network was the only way to stay alive. They never forgot the habit, no matter how soft the gentle insanity of the so-called modern world became. Garrett, especially, stayed abreast of medical research and breakthroughs. Some nightmares a person never forgot. Security collars and electronic tagging were just a step below the “invisible fences” for pets.“You don’t have to do this, Garrett. Drake and Rex both volunteered to take your place.” Simon came down to the main level of the warehouse to help him but, instead of loading the van, he studied Garrett’s profile.“It’s not a problem. I’m the most logical choice. I’ve already developed a rapport with the doctor.” He selected a crate of dried foods. Cooking wasn’t something he enjoyed, but he could add water and heat with the best of them. He liked the noodle cups. They actually reminded him of his childhood. An oddly pleasant sensation, rather than a painful memory, filled him with every serving.“Walk me through it again.” Simon let the argument go for the time being, but Garrett wasn’t fooled by his mild tone or patient expression. The telepath may invade their minds upon request, but he kept his own thoughts buttoned up tight.“We have the estate on the other end of Long Island. It’s extensive and heavily fortified—she can work there. It’s late in the season for the normal tourists, which will provide us with a quiet cover. Once we’re embedded, we’re going to stay in lockdown. I can use an electronic jammer to block cell signals. Depending on how long it takes the doc to finish her work, we’ll check in every day.” The plan was hardly complicated.“Closest neighbors?”“Over a thousand yards. The location is a prime piece of real estate with its own beach. Motion sensors will alert me to any arrivals. No one from the team will approach without notifying me ahead of time. You do realize that this is hardly my first picnic. ““How are you feeling about Ilsa?”Garrett swung around to meet Simon’s paler than pale gaze without a trace of humor. “She’s a means to an end. That’s it. She may prove helpful to the cause. Beyond that, I feel very little.”Which wasn’t entirely the truth but, unless Simon dug down past Garrett’s innate defenses, it was the only truth he planned on sharing. The woman was beautiful, curvy, and real. She possessed a wildly keen intelligence, but he hadn’t missed the way her eyes lit up or the excitement that teased her nipples beneath the too thin shirt as she hammered them with questions about the chip.Protect her. The chip’s command aside, he understood his task. Keeping her alive to do her work helped the mission. The entire plan fell within an acceptable parameter.“That’s not what I meant and you know it. Any unusual urges where she is concerned?”“You mean lust?” Garrett snorted. “No, my brain is still in my head. I haven’t turned into a hulk of monosyllabic testosterone driven by the urge to strip her naked at the first opportunity.” Although he imagined she would be as lovely without her clothes as she was with them. Her height and generous curves gave her a soft, lush look.“It’s a valid question. You’ve already established a bond with her, volunteered to let her study you and inserted yourself into an uncomfortable and potentially dangerous position. If you flip, it could have severe consequences.” Michael might be their tactical strategist and leader, but Simon counseled their souls. He kept them whole and on track with his unflinching logic and patience.“You mean if I go all caveman à la Michael? No. Not likely. It didn’t bother me that you were all in the room or talking to her. I doubt that will change during the course of her work. Besides, if necessary, I can put the doc out without harming her physically or mentally. Until we know what she knows, we need to keep her healthy.” Finished with that aspect of the conversation, he inspected the supplies he’d stored. “Will Rory be able to get the FMRI thing? I know we have the rest of the pieces she asked for.” They’d converted the wine cellar of the Hamptons estate into a medical facility. They only used it periodically if an injury were too severe for their high functioning metabolisms to handle.Which meant not often.Simon’s brows knitted together. “Garrett…this might be more difficult for you than you realized. It could wake up a lot of dormant memories.”“I appreciate the concern but enough with the touchy feely crap. This is a job, no different than every other job we’ve done since we got here. The chips are active. We need answers. She can provide us with answers. End of story.” His temper edged toward frost. “Clear?”“Clear.” Simon exhaled and held his hands up. “But you call us if you need us.”“Yes, father. I will call you if I have a booboo that needs a Band-Aid. Or maybe I’ll call Michael if I get the sudden urge to go skipping through the daisies with the doc.” He was done playing the game. The faster they got the scientist to work, the faster this would be over. It was a job.No different than the hundred other jobs they’d performed, great and small, in the last four decades. He checked the gear one last time and shut the van up.Absolutely no difference. It was a job.

About the Author:
National bestselling author, Heather Long, likes long walks in the park, science fiction, superheroes, Marines, and men who aren’t douche bags. Her books are filled with heroes and heroines tangled in romance as hot as Texas summertime. From paranormal historical westerns to contemporary military romance, Heather might switch genres, but one thing is true in all of her stories, her characters drive the books. When she’s not wrangling her menagerie of animals, she devotes her time to family and friends she considers family. She believes if you like your heroes so real you could lick the grit off their chest, and your heroines so likable, you’re sure you’ve been friends with women just like them, you’ll enjoy her worlds as much as she does.

August #MovieReviews - Part 1

Welcome back to another edition of monthly movie reviews. I have some good ones for you today.
10 Years (2011) - I'm usually entertained by movies about reunions and and school, but this movie actually put me to sleep. I had high hopes because it had Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt in it, but sadly, it let me down. Its all about these friends who go to their 10 year high school reunion and some of them have changed and some of them haven't. It was really boring and nothing really happened the whole show. In fat, I fell asleep halfway through and woke up at the end with two people slow dancing in a bar.
If you want to see the trailer, go here.
This move is going to get a 1 out of 5 stars because I hated it, pure and simple.

Batman Vs. Superman (2016) - My husband has been wanting to see this movie since it was in the making and finally he bought it on Amazon because he couldn't wait for it to show up in Redbox.
I was hoping it would be as epic as all the Marvel movies and launch the DC universe, but all I could think of the whole movie was how fat they made Batman look in his giant metal outfit. I know he had to have some sweet armor to fight Superman, but really? It was more like Fatman! I'm not really sure how I feel about it yet.
If you want to check out the trailer, click here.
I'm going to rate this movie with a 3 out of 5 stars. I'm glad I saw it but I wont watch it again.
Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) - Every time I try to watch this movie I find it ridiculous. The cast is ridiculous, the plot is ridiculous and the characters are ridiculous. With that being said, sometimes you just need to watch something a little ridiculous.
If the name does't give it away, the movie is about a hot tub time machine. These four guys go on guys weekend getaway where they get completely trashed and dump a drink into the hot tub's mechanics. They wake up the next morning in the 80's and all hell breaks loose.
To see the trailer, click on this link.
This movie gets 3 out of 5 stars for complete ridiculousness.
Riddick 2013) - This latest installment of the Riddick Chronicles is nothing to scoff at. Every time Vin Diesel puts on the glasses he becomes a bad ass of epic powers.
I loved this movie just as much as I loved Pitch Black when my husband first introduced me to it. It doesn't disappoint. This movie almost takes you back to a Pitch Black like planet where things go bump in the night. It will give you nightmares.
Please, check out the trailer here.
This movie gets a strong 5 out of 5 because it is excellent and shouldn't be missed.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) - This movie was a long time coming. People said a movie with a female lead and a minority wouldn't do well in the box office, well, they were wrong. Very wrong.
The duo of Rey and Finn is the perfect combination of whit and sarcasm. I really loved the fact that its not your typical Star Wars. There are no Jedi, really. Only the hope that Jedi still exist, but somehow, the heroin learns to touch the force without any help. Kylo Ren is a huge dork, but I loe him and hate him at the same time.
Stop comparing this movie to the originals and check out the trailer.
This move gets 5 out of 5 stars because I loved it and you will too.
