Julia Ember has stopped by the blog today to talk about how she promotes her work. Idea's that all us writers could use in the future.

Promotion as a Small Press Author

Increasingly, self-promotion is becoming important for all authors. Gone are the days where a physical book tour was the norm, and publicity mostly involved costly billboards and train station advertisements. Now even bigger publishers are relying on digital marketing and big conventions where they can promote more than one author at a time.

For small press, self-promotion and social media presence is even more important! Smaller publishers have smaller budgets and rely more heavily on digital campaigns. I know that new authors are often confused about what is their responsibility vs what is their publisher’s, but my experience has been that if your publisher seems reluctant or slow with publicity, the best way to get them excited about promoted you is to start promoting yourself. Publishers want a partner that they can work with.

For this post, I’ve prepared a short list of things debut YA authors can do themselves:


Find and join a debut group! This doesn’t necessarily sound like a promotional thing, but it’s important. In YA, there are usually several debut groups for new authors. These are groups made up of new authors helping each other. Other authors will have great ideas for how to market yourself, as well as provide essential support in your first year! Many of the author friends I still talk to the most regularly, I met as a debut author when we were both new and scared. Setup social media handles on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Facebook … in that order. For the bookish community, I would argue Twitter and Instagram are the most important platforms. Snap chat is becoming increasingly popular among teens, but due to the intimacy of the communication/messaging style on it, I don’t think it’s a good choice for authors. Twitter allows you to both post about your own work, and also keep up to date with developments in the YA community. Pre-order giveaways! I’ve done a pre-order giveaway for both of my last two books and it’s been very helpful in generating early sales. Bookbub recently posted on all the ways these can boost your book, and they talked about the giveaway I ran for The Seafarer’s Kiss: https://insights.bookbub.com/ways-to-...   It’s worth checking with your publisher to see if they will help you defray the costs of this. Some will and others won’t.Make teasers and aesthetics for your book! Of all the things I’ve shared on social media teasers and aesthetic posts about my book have been the most popular and most shared. A lot of authors think you need expensive software to make these, but you don’t! Canva.com is free and has lots of templates to help you create beautiful posts.

Originally from Chicago, Julia Ember now resides in Edinburgh, Scotland. She spends her days working in the book trade and her nights writing teen fantasy novels. Her hobbies include riding horses, starting far too many craft projects, PokemonGo and looking after her city-based menagerie of pets with names from Harry Potter. Luna Lovegood and Sirius Black the cats currently run her life.
Julia is a polyamorous, bisexual writer. She regularly takes part in events for queer teens, including those organised by the Scottish Booktrust and LGBT Youth Scotland. A world traveler since childhood, she has now visited more than sixty countries. Her travels inspire the fantasy worlds she creates, though she populates them with magic and monsters.
Julia began her writing career at the age of nine, when her short story about two princesses and their horses won a contest in Touch magazine. In 2016, she published her first novel, Unicorn Tracks, which also focused on two girls and their equines, albeit those with horns. Her second novel, The Seafarer’s Kiss will be released by Interlude Press in May 2017. The book was heavily influenced by Julia’s postgraduate work in Medieval Literature at The University of St. Andrews. It is now responsible for her total obsession with beluga whales.
In August 2017, her third novel and the start of her first series, Tiger's Watch, will come out with Harmony Ink Press. In writing Tiger's Watch, Julia has taken her love of cats to a new level.

#MovieReview | The Zookeeper's Wife

Review:  No matter how many movies, or stories I see about world war 2, It never ceases to amaze me about how cruel people can be and how utterly fearless others are in the face of such atrocities. I didn't know going into the movie that it was based on a true story, not that it would have changed anything. This movie was a deeply emotional ride. One that I will not easily forget.
The Zookeeper's wife saved over 300 Jews from being sent to the death camps. At one point, the zookeeper himself helped children on to the train, knowing full well where they were headed, but had no power to stop it. I couldn't imagine how hard that would be not to break down and cry. 
This was a great movie to watch and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to be emotionally moved. I can't wait to pick up the book.

Review: Rita Stradling has done it again. I absolutely love this book and its historical fantasy feel. The story throws you right into the action when Annabelle learns of her parents death and her color fads. Essentially, she becomes inadvisable.
We follow a wonderful twisting and turning plot to find out how Annabelle's parents died, and hope that she can regain her color and become real to the world again. I felt really immersed in this old historical world, but also grounded in a new world feel. The characters were wonderful and full of life. Even the one that was colorless. 
Another fantastic read by Ms. Stradling.

I think I need a vacation from my vacation. Its been a long week even though we had a blast at the beach. The boys ran in the waves, rode bikes around town, walked the shopfronts, and had an amazing meal at Mo's. All our favorite things.
This week we are back to being normal, except I have to work Monday. The first Monday in three years. We'll see how the eclipse affects our work day. That is to be seen.

“Just kindness.” I responded. I don’t think he expected my answer to be truthful, and he looked taken aback. He had probably expected me to say “Oh, no worries! Nothing important.” He made no comment, but backed off a little. When he continued talking, he had a bit less snap in his voice.

You, me, and all of our techs, so we can go over your trick and map out how it will be safely implemented into the show.” He knew that calling what I had done a “trick” instead of an illusion I would take as a slight. It’s sort of like telling someone who had just won an Olympic gold medal and was proudly wearing it around their neck, that their necklace was cute. Mac kept incessantly tapping his Sharpie on the side of his clipboard and shifting his weight between his feet.
I stood up slowly and calculated, looking him square in the eye, which probably surprised him a bit, since he was at least six feet tall. I’ve always enjoyed the luxury of being a tall girl. I’m five foot nine inches and so while I don’t usually tower above any guys I know, I can definitely look them directly in the eye. Most girls who at five feet five inches (which, I believe, is an average height for a woman) have to look up. My height was an advantage that I never took for granted and here, again, I was happy that I didn’t have to look up to him—figuratively or literally. In heels I could even be as tall or taller than him and I’ve always loved that part about being the height I am. I half smiled and slowly spoke, “Maybe you misunderstood. I don’t show anyone how it’s done. That wasn’t just for the audition. I handle this illusion on my own.”
Mac held still for a moment, and then glanced up from his clipboard, looking irritated. He pursed his lips and flared his nostrils. The tapping stopped. He dropped the clipboard from his stomach and held it in his hand while pointing his finger directly in my face. “Listen, lady, I don’t know who else you worked for, but we don’t do that Lone Ranger stuff around here. I’m the technical director and in charge of everyone’s safety, no matter how stupid you want to be. You do what I say, and I keep your pretty self from getting hurt. Got it?” I’m fairly certain he growled at me as he spoke.
Myriad thoughts ran through my head and I’m pretty sure several seconds passed in silence as we stared each other down. I could feel my hands tightening into fists. I really did want to punch him. I could see it happening. I’m not strong by any means but I’m also not a wimp. I wouldn’t have broken anything, but he would have been bruised and sore. I quickly ran through the possible outcomes of punching the technical director on my first day of work. It didn’t really seem to be the best idea.
I leaned into him so closely that it might have looked like to an outsider that I was about to kiss him. I huffed a little and my words were slow and deliberate. “I understand this is your job and all, but I don’t think you’re listening to me,” I hissed. I tapped his chest with my finger and he jolted a bit at my touch. He looked at me like I was speaking some kind of foreign language.
“I’m not listening? Lady, you need your ears cleaned,” he snarled back. He turned around to walk away, as if that was the end of our conversation. If he was trying to piss me off more, it was working.
I grabbed him by the shoulder, stopping him in his tracks and swinging him around to face me. My face had flushed and I’d raised my voice to a full yell. “And you need to get some manners. I’m not showing you how it’s done, okay? If we have a problem I can go to another show where the technical director doesn’t have a God complex. I’m not a girl who needs a knight in shining armor.” I was practically snarling at him.
Mac gritted his teeth and looked like he might hit me, but I knew that wasn’t really an option for him. Guys like him didn’t hit women, no matter how mad we made them. He laughed loudly. “Ha! Good luck finding a Technical Director who will treat you like the princess you clearly think you are. If I found you locked in a tower, I promise I’d leave you there.” Mac whipped around again and this time saw Riley, who had been standing just a few feet away from us the whole time. Riley was pretending not to be paying too much attention, but you could tell that was all he had been doing. I couldn’t blame him. Mac glowered at Riley and barked, “Where’s C.S.? Riley, go find Charles. Now!”
“On the move,” Riley replied with a nervous, almost panicked look on his face as he ran off to the side and disappeared.

Lani Sarem basically grew up in the entertainment industry. She began acting at age three and continued to act and perform through her early years. Lani began writing scripts when she was eleven. Review: The story follows Cory as she tries to come to terms with the death of her best friend. Along the way, she realizes that Kyra's death might not have been an accident.

I was really hoping that I would like this one, but sadly it was just a cluster of whining and terrible people. There was no murder mystery. Cory blamed everyone for her friends death and the entire town blamed Cory for leaving their small community. There was no action until the final 10% of the book when some strange chase scene happens out of no where. I really tried to like this one. I really did, but sadly I had to give it a two star rating.

Review: What a creepy little novel. I really liked the story on this one. Prosper has a demon living inside of him because of a broken deal that an ancestor made 300 years ago. 12 year old Prosper is a most interesting child. His character is well developed and you can't help but love the kid. The world building was a little bland, something I had seen before, but not boring. I gave the book a three stars and think that people will love this little read around Halloween.

Review: There is nothing like a good out of body experience to start your day. I really was intrigued by the whole concept of uploading the mind into a super computer and living forever. The whole world, description and people were great. I wish the beginning was longer and had more of Rose's story as she was transferred into the virtual world. Everything seems great at this point until the world turns upside down and people start turning on the sisters. 
I was enamored with the story from start to finish. A wonderful summer read.

The entire morning had been one shock to his system after another. The nice long weekend in his giant but silent house had made him all but forget about the weird run-in with Janet. He’d spent the entire time working on his homework and enjoying the peace and quiet.

There was just so much noise. Nick pulled his hood up, but it did nothing to block the sounds. Every single thought that crossed someone else’s mind entered his. He didn’t give a damn about someone’s new pet lizard. And while he appreciated the girl across from him’s glances and thoughts of admiration—at least, he was pretty sure those belonged to her from the way she watched him—he didn’t want to know what other people were thinking.
What had caused this? Was it some sort of mental illness? Was he imagining these things? He couldn’t be sure he was even hearing real thoughts. He considered quizzing someone, but he was almost too afraid to confirm what he suspected.
He was reading people’s minds. Hearing their thoughts. Without even trying.
And it was excruciating.

J.D. creates artistry in many ways, as a baker and cake artist by day and author by night. You can usually find her typing away at the computer or covered in frosting.
Since discovering she has a knack for writing, J.D. has so far written and self-published eight books of the Everealm and Songs of Everealm Series and is now venturing into the world of paranormal with her new superhero-themed series. She is an avid reader and lover of all things romance so she always includes a good love story in her paranormal and fantasy novels.
