Author Interview: The Caught Up in Love Series

What’s the main reason someone should really read this series?

The Caught Up in Love series is about three women from one family, their secrets, and their second chances at love. It’s kind of a Kerry Lonsdale meets Colleen Hoover blend of smart plots and edgy delivery.

The stories have underlying threads of redemption, hope, transformation, and sacrificing for the people you love. Family is a strong theme, along with how the dead play their part on the living. In each book, the heroine is shackled in some way to someone who has died.

That’s the gist, anyway! But it’s more than that. A tangential thread throughout the series is a crime syndicate investigation that brushes lightly against the family in every book.

Another reason to read this book and the rest of the series: It takes place in New Jersey! The books are set in towns where I used to live (Summit, Chatham) or where I’ve spent time (Morristown, Spring Lake). You can walk the steps of the characters in places like the Morristown Green, the Summit Train Station, the beach on Spring Lake, and more…

What inspired you to write the series? A particular person? An event?

LOL, yes and no. The first book in the series was meant to be a standalone novel. It’s a May / December romance about a widowed romance writer and a troubled young landscaper who she convinces to be her cover model when she spots him planting trees on the grounds of the local hospital. That was the inspiration, because it happened to me. Kind of.

In August 2013, I was visiting a close family friend when I spotted a group of guys planting trees, and one of them looked exactly like a character in the book I was writing. Unfortunately, I couldn’t muster the courage to stop. Missing that opportunity haunted me for months until it spun itself into a novel in my head and became Caught Up in RAINE (2017 IPPY Award in Romance). In the first chapter, Jillian stops the car, and offers Raine, a part-time college student, $300 to pose as her cover model. He accepts and the rest becomes their love story!

CUIR got me an agent, and when we decided to go on submission, the idea morphed into a series about Jillian, her niece Jenny (Shelter My Heart), and Jillian’s older sister, Kitty (featured in the third book, Surrender My Heart). Kitty’s story sprouted from two scenes I cut from the first novel at the advice of one of my editors, and became the book that anchors the entire series.

Since the series features heroines of different ages and blurs the line between Women’s Fiction and Contemporary Romance, we couldn’t find it a traditional publishing home. So I decided to indie publish, though Shelter My Heart was a 2017 Kindle Scout winner and received a publishing contract from Kindle Press.

What’s the best and the hardest part of being an author?

The best: Fan mail! I love when someone tells me how much they enjoyed my book, and that they couldn’t stop thinking about the characters and / or the story; that it touched them in some way, making them laugh or cry. I feel my characters deeply, and it’s very rewarding when someone else catches that same feeling.

The hardest: Discoverability, proving your work has been properly vetted, and having time to thoughtfully connect with bloggers, other authors, and readers. I have my inner circle, but quickly came to the conclusion that I couldn’t do everything. In my case, time is scarce and worth money. I pick and choose as I see fit, knowing that the price could be less readers who find me. Also, getting reviews! Please, please leave one! It’s the best way to honor a book you’ve loved.

Is there something in particular that motivates you (fame? fortune?)

What motivates me? Readership. Connecting. Impacting people’s lives in a positive way through my stories. Seeing one of my books on film or TV would be awesome, too. Oh, and did I mention hot guys with abs? (Kidding!)

Which book do you wish you could have written?

Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander!

Vote for a chance at an advanced copy of Surrender My Heart!

I'm running a Kindle Scout campaign through October 20th for Surrender My Heart, the next book in the Caught Up in Love series.

Vote here: https://kindlescout.amazon.com/p/35EE...

Everyone who nominates the book gets a FREE Kindle copy one month prior to launch if it's selected for a Kindle Press contract (my last one was, so here's hoping!)

The first three chapters are posted (pre-final edits, so there could be typos) for your perusal.

What's it about? Here you go:

For decades, Katherine “Kitty” McNally has secretly loved John Henshaw, the man lying shot and unconscious in the hospital bed next to her. Then again, maybe not so secretly. Those closest to her, including her soon-to-be ex-husband, have suspected it for years. Their story ended with a gunshot wound the last time, too. Life seems to have taken her full circle, but only the dead know the secrets she still keeps.

Detective John Henshaw fell in love with his “Kat” the moment she became his geometry tutor in high school. When they graduated, he thought their future was sealed. Wrong. Enter life’s nonstop curve balls. The worst two moments of his life were the two times he lost Kat. After thirty-five years and one failed marriage trying to forget her, he can’t escape the fact that he’s never stopped loving her. Maybe it’s just his ego, but he could swear he sees a spark of love in her eyes every time she looks at him. It’s why he stays in the New Jersey town that holds his most painful memories. It’s why he accepted his place decades ago as a family friend to the McNally sisters.

As John recovers from his hospital stay in Kitty’s care, they slowly rediscover each other. This is Kitty’s last chance to confront her past and rekindle their love—if John can forgive her once he learns the truth.

There you have it! Thank you for your support!!

Hugs,
LG

LOVE ROMANCE? LAUNCH DAY FOR SHELTER MY HEART & HALF-TRUTHS FROM KINDLE PRESS

I’m incredibly thrilled to share my launch day for Shelter My Heart (Caught Up in Love, Book 2) with fellow Kindle Press author, Randileigh Kennedy, and her amazing book, Half-Truths!

Read blog post: http://www.lgoconnor.com/site/love-ro...

Half-Truths by Randileigh Kennedy

On the surface, Whitley Rose appears relatively put together. People are in awe of her songwriting career, her Nashville apartment has a one-of-a-kind view, and her rock star boyfriend – well, he’s a dirt bag, and truth-be-told her tiny apartment actually sucks. Meanwhile, on the chance her crumbling dreams aren’t devastating enough, she’s called back home to face the reality that her father is seriously ill.

Sawyer Grant is dangerously handsome for a guy in jogging pants, and far too focused for a spontaneous girl like Whitley. However, having experienced the loss of his own family, he knows what it’s like to face the hard truth of losing someone. Despite the heaviness of their circumstances, they still find themselves smiling and laughing together under the summer sun.

Perhaps an open sky, laughter, and love are the only truths they really need.

Shelter My Heart (Caught Up in Love Book 2) by L.G. O'Connor

Two Weeks. One Life-Changing Proposal. Devon, an ailing, young CEO-in-training due to inherit his dead father’s conglomerate saves the day for Jenny, an engaged young woman on her way home to see her family. To repay his kindness, she agrees to be his date for his family’s annual society gala and convince the board that he’s healthy and going to marry. Two weeks are all Devon needs, and two weeks are all Jenny can give—until the stakes rise, forcing Jenny to answer the question: How far is she willing to go to save Devon’s life?

RandileighI nominated Randi’s book during her campaign, which ran with mine. As soon as I read the opening scene, and I saw that her book opened in an airport and her heroine was on her way home to see a sick family member (just like mine!), I was hooked. I feel so blessed to have been part of the 2-3% of authors chosen to publish with Kindle Press, and to be part of the incredibly supportive community we have on Facebook.

Randi and I decided to partner up on our launch, and she was kind enough to drop by here to chat! Welcome, Randi!

How many books have you published? All contemp romance?

I have 5 self-published books, all contemporary/new adult romance. They are also all “clean” romances which isn’t always easy to do, but I never want 18+ labels on my books – they are all perfectly suitable to be read by teenagers. I loved reading romance books at a young age, so it’s important for me to write them that way and I hope my audience can rely on their imagination when the lights go out. :)

What made you decide on Kindle Scout?

I wish I discovered it sooner, quite honestly! I read about it on the bottom of one of my Amazon pages and it sounded like a good fit for me. Obviously I’m quite happy now I submitted my book! It’s a great avenue for self-published authors to explore, or even for those who have just completed their first book.

Inspiration behind your story Half-Truths?

I got a call awhile back that my father, only in his 50s, was in serious heart failure – I flew back home (from the Midwest back to Nevada) and they told us he only had a 5% chance of making it. It was a very emotional few weeks. I had to write about it. Naturally for me the only thing that heals sorrow like that is love – so it’s still very much a love story.

Your story also opens in an airport. What gave you that idea?

Since the book takes place in 2 different cities, Mountain Ridge (Nevada) and Nashville (Tennessee) the airport made the most sense to me since they would have a connection to both cities.

Heard you have a pet pig! Tell us about him / her. What made you get a pig vs. a dog or cat?

I do, his name is Kevin Bacon and he is adorably charming (as far as pigs go, lol). They actually make amazing pets – he uses a litter box, pigs are hypoallergenic, and they don’t shed! All a bonus over a cat or dog. They are very smart animals though and are born with the brain of a human toddler, so pigs (like toddlers) aren’t for everyone – but for me, I like a little weirdness in my life, so it suits me well.

What’s next for you?

I’m already halfway through a new romance called “The Weight of Madness.” It’s a little darker than my other love stories. I hope to have that completed this summer.

One thing you wish you know before you were published that you know now?

Patience is a test I rarely pass. Sometimes the “waiting” is agonizing, but it’s just part of the process. (Even knowing that though, I’m never fully prepared for just how it feels…)

Finally, tea or coffee?

NEITHER – It’s got to be either Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi. I like a little fizz in my life. :)

About Randileigh Kennedy

Randileigh Kennedy grew up in Nevada and now resides in the Midwest. She has had many eclectic experiences – she has been a pig farmer, a world traveler, a Las Vegas cocktail waitress, a radio DJ, an expert at Monopoly, a party planning addict, a hypochondriac who overuses WebMD, a wife, a mother, a songwriter – and the list continues to grow.

She currently has five books available – all three books in the SIX Series (these are light, easy-to-read summer love stories and can be read independently, although they are more enjoyable when read in sequence), along with two separate standalone books, Ten Seconds of Crazy, and The Falling Kind. All of these books are more of a “clean” romance – no 18+ rating (they’re more like a PG-13 movie :-))

USA Today Happy Ever After Blog: Mac-a-Tastic Mac 'n Cheese from Raine's Roost

Raine, the mouthwatering hero of LG O’Connor’s upcoming Caught Up in Raine, stops in to share another mouthwatering recipe (sensing a pattern?) from heroine Jillian’s kitchen. Caught Up in Raine arrives April 18th.

Raine: Hey. How’s it going? I’m stoked to be here, and I want to thank Joyce Lamb for inviting me back. I’ll admit, when Jillian first talked me into doing this, I thought: Who’s going to want recipes from some half-naked guy with long hair? So, thanks to everyone who shared my post and commented on social media. I’m touched by all the support. Really.

How to create a fantasy world that works...

Hope's Prelude (The Angelorum Twelve Chronicles, #2.5) by L.G. O'Connor In celebration of the print version of HOPE'S PRELUDE, I'm reprinting this wonderful article written by Romantic Suspense Author, Alice Orr. You can read the interview I did earlier this month with Alice HERE about writing, romance, and her Riverton Road series.

This Q&A article originally appeared in the RWA / NY Chapter's Newsletter in the Keynote section published a few weeks ago, and is being reprinted with permission from RWA and Alice. I was thrilled that she mentioned HOPE'S PRELUDE in her article.

Here you go...

Q: How do I create a fantasy world that works?
