August 9, 1776, Nathanael Greene receives his long-desired promotion as one of the four new major generals. He commands troops on Long Island. Continental officer John Marshall describes the Continental Army as “unstable in its nature,—incapable, from its structure, of receiving discipline,—and inferior to its enemy, in numbers, in arms, and in every military equipment.” http://www.revolution240.com http://ow.ly/i/eD28n

On this day Aug. 8, 1776: “For the several posts on New York, Long, and Governor’s Island, and Paulus Hook, the army consisted of only seventeen thousand two hundred and twenty-five men, of whom three thousand six hundred and sixty-eight were sick,” Washington reports in a letter to the Continental Congress. “Under every disadvantage, my utmost exertions shall be employed to bring about the great end we have in view; and, so far as I can judge from the professions and apparent dispositions of my troops, I shall have their support.” http://ow.ly/i/eD67G

July-Aug. 1776, Though anguished to be away from her, Henry Knox is glad that his wife isn’t with him and George Washington’s army in New York. He writes her that: “Two ships and three tenders of the enemy about twenty minutes past three weighed anchor, and in twenty-five minutes were before the town. We had a loud cannonade, but could not stop them, though I believe we damaged them much.” #TBT #ThrowbackThursday revolution240.com http://ow.ly/i/eD1Dw

July 20, 1776 George Washington receives an apology from British General Howe and offers him a pardon. Washington responds “that those who had committed no fault, wanted no pardon” and that the Americans are only defending what they deemed their indubitable rights. http://www.revolution240.com http://ow.ly/i/eBgUf

July 14, 1776, On this day in history. Lord Howe sends George Washington a letter but fails to address him as “Your Excellency,” the common title for the leader of an army. Instead Howe addresses him as “George Washington, esquire,” the name for a private citizen. An insulted Washington refuses the letter and rightly concludes that the British aren’t serious about giving the colonies independence. #TBT Throwback Thursday #LovingAmerica http://ow.ly/i/eBffx

Huzzah! Washington orders the Declaration of Independence to be read to his troops in New York. Some of his men are so excited that they pull down the statue of King George III and melt it into musket balls. Samuel Adams aptly quips: “Monarchy seems to be generally exploded.” http://ow.ly/i/equs7
