9-16-1776 “They were opposed with spirit,” American George Clinton writes about the four-hour skirmish at Harlem Heights. Even though the redcoats outnumber them two to one, the Continentals push back the British three times. “I consider our success in this small affair, [at Harlem] at this time, almost equal to a victory. It has animated our troops, gave them new spirits, and erased every bad impression the retreat from Long Island, &c., had left on their minds.” http://ow.ly/i/eErx1

Sept. 11, 1776. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge meet with Admiral Howe on Staten Island for a peace conference. Disappointing them, Howe does not acknowledge U.S. independence and only offers for the patriots to put down their arms await the generosity of the British government. Peace is only available on the condition that the colonies return to their allegiance and obedience to the British crown. They reject his terms. revolution240.com http://ow.ly/i/eEqLQ

Sept. 1776, Two Clintons oppose each other in New York. Aug. 28-9, 1776. George Washington and his army silently evacuate Long Island by boat to Manhattan during a heavy fog overnight to prevent the destruction of his army. Believing the Americans to be much stronger than they are, British General Howe makes no immediate attempt to force their lines. “The safe retreat of the patriot army was by many attributed to a peculiar Providence. It was a trust in this Providence, a calm assurance of ultimate success under its guiding care that strengthened the hearts of the patriots in their darkest hour of trial,” future historian William Jackman concludes. http://ow.ly/i/eD59F

Aug. 1776-George Washington gives his men a pep talk before the Battle of Long Island. “The time is now near at hand, which must determine whether Americans are to be freemen or slaves. Whether they are to have any property they can call their own; whether their houses and farms are to be pillaged and destroyed, and consigned to a state of wretchedness from which no human efforts will deliver them. The fate of unborn millions will now depend, under God, on the courage and conduct of this army . . . Let us then rely on the goodness of our cause, and the aid of the Supreme Being, in whose hands victory is to animate and encourage us to great and noble actions.” http://ow.ly/i/eD2vK
