Orthodox Western Saints for Today
Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
13th August (31st July O.S.):
CALIMERIUS, Apostle of the Po Valley, a Greek who served as Bishop of Milan. He was martyred under Commodus by being thrown into a well, circa A.D. 190, and is buried under the altar of his church in Milan.FABIUS, a soldier beheaded in Caesarea in Mauretania (North Africa) under Diocletian (A.D. 300) for refusing to carry a standard bearing idolatrous emblems.FIRMUS OF TAGASTE, (Date Unknown), a Bishop of Tagaste in North Africa who endured terrible tortures rather than betray the hiding-place of a member of his flock.

GERMANUS OF AUXERRE, a native of Auxerre, and one-time governor of part of Gaul, who went on to serve as Bishop of his city of birth (A.D. 418). He made to visits to Britain (A.D. 429 and A.D. 447), where he succeeded in stamping out Pelagianism. He reposed in Ravenna A.D. 448.NEOT, commonly believed to have been a monk at Glastonbury in England, who became a hermit in Cornwall at the place now called Saint Neot. He reposed circa A.D. 880, and some of his relics were later taken to the town now called St. Neots in Cambridgeshire.

ABDON AND SENNEN, (Third or Fourth Century), two Persian nobles who were brought to Rome as prisoners. Once there, they devoted themselves to looking after imprisoned Christians and burying the relics of the martyrs.ERMENGYTH, a sister of St. Ermenburgh (19th November), who lived as a nun at Minster-in-Thanet in England, reposing circa A.D. 680.MAXIMA, DONATILLA AND SECUNDA, three holy virgins who martyred in Tebourba in North Africa under Diocletian, A.D. 304.OLAV OF SWEDEN, a King of Sweden who was martyred by the heathen (circa A.D. 950) for refusing to sacrifice to idols at the spot where Stockholm now stands.PETER CHRYSOLOGUS, a native of Imola in present-day Italy; he was ordained to the diaconate there, and later archdeacon, and finally Archbishop of Ravenna (circa A.D. 433). Famed for his eloquence in preaching, thus the name Chrysologus (Golden Speech), he reposed circa A.D. 450. Many of his sermons are still extant.
RUFINUS, (Date Uncertain), a martyr in one of the early persecutions in Assisi.TATWINE, a monk at Breedon in Mercia in England who was famed for his piety and learning; and successor of St. Brithwald (9th January) as Archbishop of Canterbury. He reposed A.D. 734.URSUS, a hermit at the church of St. Amator in Auxerre who was made bishop of that city when he was aged seventy-five. A.D. 508 is given as the year of his repose.

FAUSTINUS, (Fourth Century), a disciple of St. Felix (18th May), Bishop of Martano near Spoleto, and present at his martyrdom. St. Faustinus suffered for Christ before reposing peacefully in Todi in Umbria.KILIAN, a seventh century abbot of a monastery on the island of Inishcaltra in Ireland, who authored a Life of St. Brigid (1st February).LUPUS OF TROYES, married to Pimeniola, a sister of St. Hilary of Arles (5th May), though after seven years, they separated by mutual consent with Lupus becoming a monk at Lérins. He was consecrated Bishop of Troyes (A.D. 426), and later accompanied St. Germanus of Auxerre (31st July) to Britain to oppose Pelagianism; he succeeded in saving Troyes from Attila (A.D. 453). He reposed A.D. 478, at the age of ninety-four.OLAV OF NORWAY (OLAF, TOLA), repenting of a youth spent as a pirate, he was baptised in Rouen (A.D. 1010), three years later he helped Æthelred II of England against the Danes. Upon ascending to the throne (A.D. 1015), he immediately summoned missionaries, mainly from England, to enlighten his homeland. This was only partially successful, and he was driven from his kingdom. In an attempt to recover it, he fell in battle at Stiklestad (A.D. 1030). In Norway he is regarded as the champion of national independence.PROSPER OF ORLEANS, a Bishop of Orleans, he reposed circa A.D. 453.SERAPIA, a slave of Syrian descent who was beheaded in Rome under Hadrian, A.D. 119.SILIN (SULIAN), (Sixth Century), a native of Brittany who founded a small monastery at Luxulyan in Cornwall.SIMPLICIUS, FAUSTINUS, AND BEATRIX, two brothers and their sister who are commonly believed to have been martyred in Rome under Diocletian, circa A.D. 303.

ARDUINUS (ARDWYNE), there is no reliable information on this Saint extant, however there are those who say he was one of four English pilgrims who reposed whilst on a pilgrimage to Rome in the seventh century. St. Arduinus is venerated as the Patron Saint of the town of Ceprano.CAMELIAN, the successor of St. Lupus (29th July) as Bishop of Troyes, from A.D. 478 to his repose circa A.D. 525.INNOCENT I, Pope of Rome from A.D. 402 until his repose A.D. 417. During his Pontificate Rome was sacked by the Goths under Alaric (A.D. 410), and he also led the condemnation of Pelagianism.LUCIDUS, a monk at St. Peter's near Aquara who reposed circa A.D. 938.LYUTIUS, a monk at Monte Cassino who reposed as a hermit at La Trinità della Cava circa A.D. 1038.NAZARIUS AND CELSUS, two martyrs in Milan under Nero circa A.D. 68. PEREGRINUS, (Second Century ?), a priest-hermit on an island in the River Saône near Lyons at the time of St. Irenaeus (28th June) and during the persecution under Severus.

SAMSON (SAMPSON), one of the greatest missionaries of his age, he began as a disciple of St. Illtyd (6th November) at Llantwit Major, and then for a time was monk and abbot of the monastery on Caldey Island. He left Caldey for Ireland, and then Cornwall where he was consecrated bishop by St. Dubricius (14th November). Settling in Brittany; he spent the rest of his life enlightening that country from his base at Dol. St. Samson reposed circa A.D. 565.VICTOR I, a native of North Africa who was Pope of Rome from A.D. 189 until his repose A.D. 198.

ECCLESIUS, the Bishop of Ravenna from A.D. 521 until his repose A.D. 532. He commenced the construction of San Vitale, where there is still a mosaic of him.ETHERIUS, a Bishop of Auxerre, who reposed A.D. 573.GEORGE, AURELIUS AND NATALIA, FELIX, AND LILIOSA, a group of martyrs in Cordoba under the Caliph Abd ar-Rahman II (A.D. 852). Aurelius and Felix, with their wives, Natalia and Liliosa, were Spaniards; but the deacon George was a monk from Palestine, who, though offered pardon as a foreigner, chose martyrdom for Christ with the others.MAURUS, PANTALEIMON, AND SERGIUS, three martyrs venerated in Bisceglia on the Adriatic. Maurus is said to have been born in Bethlehem, and was sent by the Apostle Peter to be the first Bishop of Bisceglia. They were martyred under Trajan, circa A.D. 117.

PASTOR, a priest in Rome who is thought to have been the brother of Pope Pius I. He reposed circa A.D. 160.SIMEON OF PADOLIRONE, an Armenian hermit who went on pilgrimages to Jerusalem, Rome, Compostella, and Tours. Renowned for the miracles he worked on these journeys, he settled at the monastery of Padolirone near Padua, where he reposed A.D. 1016.SYMPHRONIUS, OLYMPIUS, THEODULUS, AND EXUPERIA, Symphronius was a Roman slave who brought about the conversion of the tribune Olympius, the latter's wife Exuperia and their son Theodulus. s All burnt to death under Valerian, A.D. 257.VALENS, the Bishop of Verona from A.D. 524 until his repose A.D. 531.

APOSTLE JAMES, the son of Zebedee and brother of Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian, he was one of the Twelve and the first to be martyred (Acts 12:2) under King Herod Agrippa (A.D. 44). It is generally believed that he travelled as far as Spain; and certainly relics of the Apostle were later enshrined in Compostella, and owing to this apostolic link, it became the most important places of pilgrimage in the West after Rome. St. James is the patron-saint of Spain.CUCUPHAS (CUCUFATE, CUGAT, GUINEFORT, QOQOFAS), a North African who was martyred (A.D. 304) near Barcelona where the monastery of St. Cugat del Valles was later founded. He is one of the most renowned Spanish martyrs.EBRULFUS (EVROULT), a native of Beauvais who became a hermit and later founded a monastery at Saint-Fuscien-aux-Bois, reposing circa A.D. 600.FLORENTIUS AND FELIX, two soldiers who were martyred under Maximinius the Thracian at Furcona near Aquila A.D. 235.GLODESIND, betrothed to a nobleman who was executed on their wedding day, she became a nun and latter founded a monastery at Metz where she served as the first Abbess. St. Glodesind reposed circa A.D. 608.MAGNERICUS, the Bishop of Trier from circa A.D. 566 until his repose in A.D. 596. A close friend of St. Gregory of Tours (17th November), he was one of the most well known and highly respected bishops of his era.NISSEN, (Fifth Century), converted by St. Patrick (17th March), he later became Abbot of Montgarth (Mountgarret) in Wexford.THEODEMIR, a monk martyred in Cordoba under Abd ar-Rahman II, A.D. 851.

ALIPRANDUS (LEUPRANDUS), an eighth century abbot of St. Augustine's in Pavia.CHRISTIANA, (Seventh Century), though she lived a holy life in Flanders, she is generally thought to have been born in England. She is the patron saint of Termonde in Belgium.CHRISTINA, (Date Unknown), a virgin, most likely from Rome, who was martyred near Lake Bolsena in Tuscany.DECLAN, (Fifth Century), a disciple of St. Colman of Lismore (23rd January) who later served as bishop in the region of Ardmore in Ireland.DICTINUS, An adherent of Priscillianism who was converted by St. Ambrose (7th December), renouncing his errors at the Council of Toledo (A.D. 400), and soon afterwards became Bishop of Astorga. St. Dictinus reposed A.D. 420.GODO (GAON), a nephew of St. Wandrille (22nd July), who became a monk at Fontenelle and later founded the monastery of Oye near Sezanne-en-Brie. St. Godo reposed circa A.D. 690.LEWINA, a fifth century virgin-martyr who is venerated in Seaford in Sussex in England.MENEFRIDA, (Fifth Century), the Patron Saint of Menver (Cornwall); nothing else is known of this Saint.SIGOLENA (SÉGOLÈNE, SIGOLÈNE, SEGOULÈME), the daughter of an Aquitanian noble who, following the death of her husband, became a nun at the Monastery of Troclar in Albi (in the south of present-day France), later becoming abbess. She reposed circa A.D. 769.URSICINUS, the fourth Bishop of Sens in France. He was an opponent of Arianism, and reposed circa A.D. 380.VICTOR, STERCATIUS AND ANTINOGENES, commonly believed to have been three brothers who were martyred in Merida A.D. 304.VINCENT, (Date Unknown), a martyr in Rome, outside the walls of the city on the road to Tivoli.WULFHAD AND RUFINUS (RUFFIN), (Seventh Century), two princes of the royal family of Mercia, who were baptised by St. Chad (2nd March) and then put to death by their, still unconverted, father, at Stone in Staffordshire.

He was tortured to death for the Orthodox Faith, and his shrine is at the monastery of Classe in Ravenna.APOLLONIUS AND EUGENE, (Date Unknown), early Roman martyrs, the former was pierced with arrows at the stake, while the latter was beheaded.JOHN CASSIAN, most likely born in what is now Romania, he became a monk in Egypt and afterwards went to Marseilles, where he founded two monasteries, one for women and one for men, ruling both from Lérins. His Conferences and Institutes are still read throughout the Orthodox world. He was an ardent advocate of the Orthodox teaching on free will and opposed what later became known as Augustinianism.LIBORIOUS, the Bishop of Le Mans from A.D. 348 until his repose A.D. 390. He is the patron saint of Paderborn, Germany where his relics were translated A.D. 836.RASYPHUS AND RAVENNUS, (Fifth Century), natives of Britain who fled their country during the Anglo-Saxon invasions, settling in Gaul and becoming anchorites. They were martyred in Macé, and their relics are enshrined in Bayeux.RASYPHUS, (Date Unknown), a martyr venerated in Rome from early times.ROMULA, REDEMPTA AND HERUNDO, three holy virgins who lived an ascetic life near the church of St. Mary Major in Rome. They reposed circa A.D. 580.TROPHIMUS AND THEOPHILUS, two martyrs beheaded in Rome under Diocletian, circa A.D. 302.VALERIAN, a monk at Lérins who became Bishop of Cimeiz. He attended the Councils of Riez (A.D. 439) and Vaison (A.D. 442). St. Valerian reposed circa A.D. 460.

DABIUS (DAVIUS), (Date Uncertain), an Irish priest who worked in Scotland, where there are several churches named for him.MENELEUS (MENELE, MAUVIER), a monk at Carméry in Auvergne, who after seven years left to restore the monastery of Ménat near Clermont. St. Meneleus reposed circa A.D. 720.MOVEAN (BITEUS), (Date Uncertain), a disciple of St. Patrick (17th March), and Abbot of Inis-Coosery in Co. Down in Ireland.PANCHARIUS, a Bishop of Besançon who suffered much under the Arian Emperor Constantius, reposing circa A.D. 356.WANDRILLE (WANDREGISILUS, VANDRILLE), after a pilgrimage to Rome his wife became a nun and he became a monk at Roumain-Moutier. Ten years later he founded the monastery of Fontenelle, now the Abbey of St. Wandrille, in Normandy, which came to have over three hundred monks. St. Wandrille reposed A.D. 668.
