Novel Poems

In honor of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), here are three poems on the theme of novel writing: THE NOVEL; NOVEL IDEAS: A Sequel to "The Novel"; and A NOVEL IN VERSE. The "verse" poem rounds out with some poetic video fun from 1901.

THE NOVEL

By Linda Eve Diamond
(from The Beauty of Listening)

I want to write...
but the pen is so far away...

Across miles of minutiae,
snacks, a telephone,
the world outside,
a winding superhighway.

As I binge my time away,
I contemplate my novel—
my navel—

Why the...

Light Writing: A California Mini Photo Tour

Jeff and I spent time sightseeing in California this month. I was so busy taking pictures that I haven't done much writing. Then again, as photographs write with light, maybe it's more accurate to say I've been doing some light writing. (Light poems?) ;) I'd like to share them here and invite you to join us on a mini photo tour of some of our favorite spots.

Let's start out with a little walk on Muir Beach...

Dog Day dreams - A New Poem Inspired by a Daydreaming Dog and a Cool Cat

I photographed the couple in this poem separately, the dog by a Florida beach and the cat in a painted alley in Toronto. (I believe the dog has traveled to Toronto...)

DOG DAY DREAMS

He's a wild dog
in love with a stone
smooth cat.

She's tender
as bricks, open
as a wall.

She's so cool, even
free-falling leaves
freeze around her.

She pays polite hellos
(and rude cat calls)
no attention at all.

Still, the dog dreams
of an autumn breeze
ruffling her fur...

Moving her to soften and turn
to pour herself toward him
w...

I and You - Fiction in a flash

Introduction

Meet I and You. These are the names of the characters in the following flash fiction story, which is told in the third person. As you'd imagine, the character named I is thoroughly self centered, seeing only what I wants to see. The grammar may take a little getting used to, but these characters were born to embody their names in this little story about love and listening. It all begins with I looking for love the way that only I knows how...

IMAG_INE

The following poem was inspired by the interactive traveling IMAG-INE sculpture by Australian artist Emma Anna, which has traveled Australia New Zealand, Denmark, and is on its way through the US. The sculpture invites people to pose in place of the missing letter or take photographs highlighting the open space or anything that might align within the space and capture the imagination.

Butterflies Taking Flight! For the Love of Libraries, Books, Words and Ideas...

In my recent post, "In support of libraries, books, words, ideas..." I wrote about the famouslyanonymous book sculptor and her final project. The artist is inviting butterflies from all around the world, and she's even given a basictemplate for making them. You can joinin this collaborative effort by cutting butterflies out of old magazines and (respectfully, damaged or unusable)books. If you'd like to makebutterflies, there's still time! Butterflies should arrive atThe Butterfly Collection, c/...

Escher's Drawing Room - Flash Fiction (or Flash Truth?) ;)

"Escher's Drawing Room" is based on the work of artist and mathemagician,M. C. Escher. For story illustrations, follow the links throughout. (Links will take you to images at M. C. Escher's official Website.)

ESCHER'S DRAWING ROOM

By Linda Eve Diamond

I’m not sure where the story begins, but somewhere in this middle loop, I find myself at the home of Maurits Cornelis Escher. As this story has no real beginning, I suppose we can enter anywhere. Let’s start at this moment, as he has invited me up...

Poem for Rent - A New Poem (complete with tear-off tabs)

"Poem for Rent" was inspired by this clever formatting of Wislawa Szymborska's "True Love" poem, which I came across while writing this blog post. I thought it would be fun to write a poem to fit the form. In the spirit of National Poetry Month, the item for rent is a poem.

If you would like to share the "Poem for Rent" flyer for National Poetry Month (or any time), please feel free to download the pdf here. Let's post some around the neighborhood and see if we have any takers... ;)

End and Beginning: Meeting Wislawa Szymborska

Since my post about poetry in film, I realized I didn't include documentaries, which leaves out one of my absolute favorite poetry films, End and Beginning: Meeting Wislawa Szymborska. I just watched it again and it's a treat every time.

Here's the trailer, which shows her telling a wonderful little joke...

From the beginning, she's as warm, inviting and funny as you'd expect if you've read her poems. We see her playing a guessing game with her friend and laughing while pouring brandy from her...
