Listening-Themed Poetry Contest

The Florida State Poets Association offers members the opportunity to sponsor and choose a theme for one of their annual poetry contests, so I'm happy to announce the contest theme: LISTENING!

The submission period begins in May (details below), but as March is Listening Awareness Month, this is a great time to start thinking about it!

This category was inspired by the many wonderful poems people have shared with me in response to "The Beauty of Listening" poetry collection, International List...

Join the National Day of Unplugging!

The National Day of Unplugging invites us all to unplug for 24 hours, March 4-5, 2016, from sundown to sundown. This event takes place annually on the first Friday of March, which seems like ideal timing as March is also Listening Awareness Month! (While technology helps connect us with those who are far away, very often it can interfere with focusing on those in the room—or even our own quiet thoughts).

Because this is difficult for many who will genuinely need to check in or who suffer from...

"LOVE LETTERS" A Love Poem for Handwritten Letters

A collection of love letters dating back more than 100 years inspired this poem, which celebrates the flair and artistry of old-fashioned handwriting and language. So here's an ode to handwritten letters and cursive writing, those "letters thoughtfully written / in beautifully tied ink ribbons"...

(Did you know today is National Handwriting Day? Read more about this special day with a personal touch below the poem!)

Photos from Jack London State Historic Park

Back in October, I shared some sightseeing photos from California. The only writing I did on the trip was with my camera, which I've decided to call "light writing" (after all, it's a way of writing with light). We also visited Jack London State Historic Park. As today is Jack London's birthday, it seems like a perfect time to share.

This mini-photo tour starts with Jack London's office. Next you'll see small bedroom area he set up beside the office to accommodate late-night and early-mornin...

Happy New Year!

Big changes are flying in on THE PIG'S WINGS this year! This blog "took flight" around this time last year, in February 2015. (Has it been almost a year already?!) It's been so much fun sharing "Poetry and Other Fanciful Means of Flight" that I'll be making some changes to allow more time for poetry and Pig's Wings posts!

In 2016, it seems, it's time to say goodbye to the Listeners Unite Blog (est. 2006) and The Beauty of Picture Books Blog (est. 2010). At the same time, the Listeners Unite We...

Holiday Poem: "After Christmas" (A Postscript to "The 12 Days of Christmas")

Here's a little holiday poem about the day after "The 12 Days of Christmas"! ("After Christmas" is also recorded as audio and video. Both are posted below the text.)

AFTER CHRISTMAS

By Linda Eve Diamond

In a one-room apartment,
My true love gave to me
Swarms of birds and people
And a whole pear tree!

The partridge alone
Would have been enough
Or a little stocking stuff,
But pregnant geese?
French hens and turtle doves
And more calling birds?
Another four noisy birds!

My sweetheart calls this love?
Swans are...
