Review: Nordic Gods and Heroes

Nordic Gods and Heroes

Nordic Gods and Heroes by Padraic Colum

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I talked our school district into ordering this book for my Mythology class. I certainly haven’t regretted it. We spend the second quarter of the semester class studying Norse mythology. This book is very accessible, even to the students who are dumped into the elective class just because there’s nowhere else to put them. The myths are told in short story format, using simple but poetic language. Sure, the names throw the kids,...

Review: I am Legend and Other Stories

I am Legend and Other Stories

I am Legend and Other Stories by Richard Matheson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The book is a little slow in the middle, but overall it’s an excellent read. If all you know of the story is the Will Smith movie, you don’t know anything! Pick this up and read it. Be ready for the deep irony of the ending. Then, when you read it a second time, you’ll pick up on many clues that reveal the inevitable.

I’d read this book a couple of times previously. I’ve just finished re-reading it with my four sections...

New audio interview

If you’re like me, you know there’s nothing worse than the sound of your own voice being played back to you. Nonetheless, I offer you this interview of me by Rick Hipson for his Dark Bites site. Put on your boots, pull up a cow pie, and try not to laugh too hard at the Okie.

Married at a Con

For those who don’t know, about a year ago I went through the incredibly easy process of becoming an ordained minister through Universal Life Church, and followed it up by registering with the State of Oklahoma so that I can actually perform weddings (and baptisms and funeral services). So far, though, I haven’t conducted a marriage ceremony. But I have this idea …

What if I was to dress in some kind of costume — I’m thinking a medieval friar’s robe, but in green instead of brown — and perform...

Review: A Game of Thrones

A Game of Thrones

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’m not sure what I can say about this book that hasn’t been said already. This book has everything fantasy readers want — epic proportions, sword fights, wars, political intrigue, dragons, family drama and, oh yeah, freakin’ zombies, or something close enough to them. This is all wrapped up in excellent writing, and it better be because this book is a brick of a novel, and only the first in a brick house of a series.

A word of a...

Review: The Winter of Our Discontent

The Winter of Our Discontent

The Winter of Our Discontent by John Steinbeck

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Not Steinbeck’s best work, but a very enjoyable read with a message that is even more relevant today than when he wrote it.

I found the constant barrage of pet names Ethan used for his wife Mary to be silly and annoying. Maybe there was a message there about superficiality. I’m not sure.

I also thought Ethan’s final decision seemed pretty rushed. I would have liked to see at least a few more paragraphs as he contemplates wh...

New Murdered by Human Wolves Cover

Ain’t it fantastic? This cover was done by Russell Dickerson. The artistic process amazes me, and he did this on a tight deadline. I couldn’t be more pleased with it.

The book is scheduled to be released on Oct. 29, the full moon, by Graveside Tales Publishing.

Werewolf Saga in Audio

I’m thrilled to announce that the first three books of The Werewolf Saga will be released in audio format by the end of 2012. Each volume is currently in production right now and will be available for download through Amazon.com, the iTunes Store, and Audible.com.

Murdered by Human Wolves will likely be ready for release in audio shortly after Graveside Tales debuts the new print edition. The novella will be narrated by Gwendolyn Jensen-Woodard. Her credits include a narration of H.P. Lovecraf...

After Obsession U.S. trade paperback

Yesterday the FedEx man dropped off a big box for me. I tore into it and found a bunch of copies of the U.S. trade paperback edition ofAfter Obsession, the young adult paranormal romance written with Carrie Jones. What do you think of the cover? (It looks my scan wasn’t all that straight.) The paperback will be released next month. I can’t remember what day off the top of my head, though.

I kind of like the red background, and our names look more balanced on this one than on the hardcover. Nee...
