Reading Out Loud

When I get close to finishing the re-write of a story, I read it out loud at least once or twice. Not only does that help catch minor mistakes, it helps me check the rhythm and cadence of my sentences. It helps me to verify that dialogue I have written sounds true to life. I've even read a few of my stories and posted them on You Tube.I don't do it because I think I can read as good as a professional actor or announcer can. I do it because I trust the impact of the words I've written. Even if I don't deliver them perfectly, the words and sentences will allow my voice to come through. For that reason, I always prefer to hear an author read his or her own words rather than an actor if that is available.
