I will shortly be publishing my next book, The Monmouth Legacy:-
The Monmouth Legacy
For most the legacy was mind numbing heart stopping grief. For a few the legacy was travel, adventure, friendship and love on the beautiful island of Barbados.
Three weeks in the summer of 1685 changed the lives of the people of a small English town for ever. The Duke of Monmouth, the Protestant illegitimate son of King Charles II was in the West of England leading an army of ill-equipped, untrained farmers and artisans. They were supporting Monmouth’s claim to the throne of his Catholic uncle James II.
The men of Bridgwater joined him and marched to meet the king’s professional army. The outcome for Monmouth’s ramshackle troop was 1,300 killed on the battlefield, 320 executed and 750 transported.
In the years immediately after the calamity, the people of the town rebuilt their lives, some mourning for the dead, some living with hope that they would one day see the boys and men who had been transported return home.
