Shannon Okey shares Knitgrrl’s BIG Project

Shannon Okey shares Knitgrrl’s BIG Project on the Yarn Thing podcast with Marly Bird. This is the first episode of 2017, Marly’s TENTH year podcasting, so it’s only fitting that Shannon join us as she’s a special friend.

Shannon went full-time in the Yarn Industry in 2004. She began with a knitting blog, and was discovered, so to speak. Kathy Cano-Murillo (known as the Crafty Chica) let Shannon know her publisher was looking for someone to write knitting books for teenagers. She wrote two books Knitgrrl and Knitgrrl 2 (links to the books in Ravelry so you can check out the patterns), and later began her own publishing company, Cooperative Press, in 2010.

This was a big adventure because people don’t buy hard copy books anymore, a lot of books are actually more popular as e-books. Because Cooperative Press is an on-demand books, meaning that until you purchase the book, its not printed. That’s really cool with knitting books, any errors can be on every book published from the point the correction is made. Also, by being in partnership with the authors, helps keep costs down and everybody profits right away. Printing in the US and by printing on-demand, means they can have a book done in under a month.

Since 2009, Cooperative Press has been in a warehouse of about 500 square feet, which this creative person has outgrown, so she’s found a bigger space which will allow her to do yarn dying, and some other things. She’s had a hand-made craft show since 2004, so in the new space she will be hand-dying a wool fabric and still it’s not enough for Shannon.

With 2017, through Patreon, Shannon is creating a weekly, pattern and with it will be studying various aspects, gathering data and putting it in a book as a state-of-the-industry report. They will be charting the success of the pattern with the various elements that went into it, like photography, tech editing, sample knitters, etc., making sure that everyone who worked on each pattern in the project are compensated, plus where were the patterns sold successfully. There has been a lot of conversation about what designers are paid, so hopefully this will make us all aware of how this works.

The point is: Let’s figure out how to keep this wonderful industry from completely disappearing but still be viable for those participating. We who are the consumers can only benefit from the work of those that care and are willing to share what they are learning.

Shannon Okey can be followed through her website, www.KnitGrrl.com, also in Facebook, there is Knitgrrl Studio page and the Cooperative Press page, watch what happens and/or participate in the project at the Patreon Page. She previously visited the Yarn Thing podcast in 2014 and 2010.

Also, sharing the link to the visit of Kismet Andrews (of Bar-Maids) shownotes when she shared her new book, The Art of Schlepping.

If you missed getting to hear this live it’s is still available where the audio aired originally CLICK HERE or with a podcast catcher like iTunes or Stitcher Radio. You can also see the ‘behind-the-scenes’ video of Marly from the Birds of a Feather Studio, that aired live on her Facebook page.

Planned Pooling Crochet Finishing Starting Chains

Planned Pooling Crochet Finishing Starting Chains with Marly Bird

I don’t think that I have had enough of the planned pooling crochet trend yet, how about you? I have already shown you how to start your planned pooling project in my Best Crochet Planned Pooling Post and in my 10 Secretes to Crochet Planned Pooling. In this post I want to address what to do with the left over starting chains that you might have, let’s talk about Planed Pooling Crochet Finishing Starting Chains.

Shop Red Heart, America's Favorite Yarn

When you start your planned pooling project I recommend, in my Best Crochet Planned Pooling Video Post, that you should start your project with a longer starting chain than you think you need. This will allow you adjust where the stitches should be in the first row. The question becomes, “What do I do with those remaining chains when I finish?”. This may seem like a complicated question but really it is quite an easy problem to address. I will answer that question for you in the video below.

Planned Pooling Crochet Finishing Starting Chains:

Before you can address the extra chains you must first finish the boarder of your project. Once that is finished you will cut your starting chain to be about 2 inches from your project. Then you will use a tapestry needle to unravel the chain until 2 chains remain.

Wool Yarn from Knit Picks

With 2 chains left you will pull the tail tight to lock in the knot. Once that is complete you will weave in the end as you normally would to finish your project. Then you are done and ready to wear your project.

Watch the video below to see how I work through the process. You can checkout my YouTube channel for more videos on planned pooling crochet and other how to videos and projects.

10 Year Anniversary of the Yarn Thing Podcast

Yarn Thing Podcast with Marly BirdCan you believe it! It has been TEN years since I started the Yarn Thing Podcast. Time sure does fly when you are having fun. I wanted to take a moment and look back on the 10 year anniversary of the Yarn Thing podcast.

Just incase you don’t know what the Yarn Thing Podcast is, it is a twice weekly show that I run on Blog Talk Radio. I interview different designers, yarn companies, and other interesting people/companies in the yarn industry. The show airs on most Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10am Mountain Time (9am PST and 12pm EST). There is a chat that you can join on Blog Talk radio or you can watch a behind the scenes Facebook Live chat as the podcast airs. You can get notifications of the shows on my Facebook page. Set your calendar reminders now!

Shop Red Heart, America's Favorite Yarn
The podcast started all because I left a comment on a fellow bloggers site and they said I was funny and should start my own podcast. When you give me an idea that I like I will run with it, so I did. The Yarn Thing Podcast was the first crochet podcast on iTunes and the only one that talked about knitting and crochet. Over the past ten years the podcast has grown so much. I am so proud of it and love getting to spend some time with you each week.

Early Yarn Thing Podcast Episodes: Yarn Thing Podcast with Marly Bird

When I started the podcast I talked about my life and how knitting and crochet fit into it. It was prerecorded and took a lot of time to edit and produce. The Yarn Harlot was the first episode where I started to talk about designers and others in the industry. I enjoyed it so much that I turned the path of the podcast to start talking about designers in the industry.

Once I started to talk about others in the industry I reached out to review books on the show. Jill Wright used to come on the show and help me talk about different topics. The more episodes I produced the more they morphed into what you hear today.

Wool Yarn from Knit Picks

First Interview on the Yarn Thing Podcast:

The first designer that I interviewed on the show was Annie Modesitt. I am a HUGE fan girl and loved her on Knitty Gritty. I was so excited to have her on the show. Unfortunately the platform that I used to record those first episodes is no longer around and I don’t have those shows to share with you. I switched over to Blog Talk radio in 2009 after the recommendation from Mary Beth Temple.

One of the other first designers that I had on the show was Drew Emborsky. I mentioned to him that I secretly wanted to be a designer. He encouraged me to start my path and the rest is history.

Yarn Thing Podcast with Marly Bird Moving to Blog Talk Radio:

Recording the show and editing it was quite difficult. I was doing everything myself and I had three little kids at home. These factors made me decide to switch over to a live show. I was so nervous to go live for the first time. There wasn’t going to be any time to remove the pauses or times when the wrong thing was said.

My first live show was on March 18, 2009 with Kristin Omdahl. Kristin is a regular on the show and loves to share new things with us. Once I went live I started to produce the show at a regular time once each week. Over time people kept asking me to interview more people and more designers wanted to get on the show. Since everyone seemed excited about the show I added a second date and run the show on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (most weeks).

I decided that the format would work best as a chit chat session between friends. Since the show is live I wanted to allow the listeners to feel like they were sitting in on a great conversation between friends. I try not to talk about what I have going on but rather really dive into what the guest has going on in their business and to hear their story to share with all of you.

10 Years, 4 million downloads, 400+ episodes:

Yarn Thing Podcast with Marly Bird-Benjamin LevisayIn the ten years that I have been running the Yarn Thing Podcast I have had just shy of 4 million downloads from Blog Talk Radio. Please help me get to that 4 million mark this year! This year I also

reached my 400th episode. The title of 400th episode goes to Benjamin Levisay from Stitches.

I feel so lucky to be able to bring you the show each week. I love getting to chat with my friends while brining you all of the new things in the industry. The best thing about the show for me is being able to giveaway a prize each episode. We give away a prize to the live listeners and one to someone who leaves a comment after the show.

Marly Bird Yearly Review 2016

Marly Bird Yearly Review 2016-Thank you for an amazing 2016As 2016 draws to a close I thought that it would be fun to look back on all of the amazing things that have happened this year. Come with me as we catch up on everything that happened with a Marly Bird Yearly Review 2016. *post contains affiliate links*

Thank You:

First, I would like to give a sincere thank you to all of you that have followed me for a long time and for those that have just started to be apart of my community. I enjoy interacting with each of you, learning from you and being able to teach you new tricks along the way. You allow me to do what I love every day and I am so grateful for that. I look forward to what 2017 will hold and I hope that you will join me in the journey.

Marly Bird Yearly Review 2016
New Gig:

My biggest accomplishment this year was being chosen as the new Red Heart Yarn National Spokesperson. This has been an amazing opportunity and I am really enjoying getting to work with such an amazing company. Their support has allowed me to do many new things. Through their partnership I have organized two CAL/KAL’s this year. I have also expanded my YouTube teaching and started a “My First” series where I walk you through making some of their FREE patterns.

Crochet Along/Knit Along:

Marly Bird Yearly Review 2016-Crochet Along

This year we had a poncho crochet along and a shawl knit along. If you didn’t hear about these projects you can join the respective Facebook groups (CAL Group/KAL Group) so that you know when the 2017 projects will be started.

We started with the shawl knit along in the beginning of the year. Marly Bird Yearly Review 2016-Knit AlongIt was amazing to see all of the new and experienced knitters gather together and make beautiful shawls. It was the BIGGEST KAL so far in Red Heart History! Thanks so much for making that happen.

Marly Bird Yearly Review 2016-New Production Studio Personal Studio:

As part of working with Red Heart Yarns they wanted me to continue to make tutorial videos to help you all with learning new techniques and learning the details of some of their FREE patterns. In order to do this my family and I built a home studio, Birds of a Feather Production Studio, so that I could make all the videos from home. Although this may sound super high tech, it is still just a one woman team! I am always working to make the videos the best that they can be fore you.

YouTube:

Since building my own studio and producing more videos my YouTube subscribers jumped from 10,000 to 30,000 in the past year! Thank you for showing me so much love! This is only my second year producing videos and I love being able to teach you new things. When looking back at all of the videos from this year the BEST Tutorial for Planned Pooling Argyle has the most views of 2016.

The Sidewalk Shawl has been viewed the most times since the start of the channel. The Sidewalk Shawl is a beautiful FREE pattern from Red Heart. You can download the pattern on their site and then watch the video to help you learn how to make it.

I am always looking for new things to make videos about. Leave comment on this post with what you want to learn. Let me know if there is a stitch, a technique or a FREE pattern from Red Heart Yarns that you want to see how to make. I will do my best to add it to my list for 2017 videos.

If you haven’t already, please take a minute to subscribe to my YouTube channel so you never miss a new video.Learn on YouTube with Marly Bird

There will be another CAL and KAL this year. Stay tuned for the KAL to launch in spring of 2017. Don’t forget to join the Facebook group for the CAL and KAL to know when the new project will be starting.

Until Next Year:

That wraps up the Marly Bird Yearly Review 2016. I hope that you were able to be apart of many of the events and I would love for you to join me in 2017 as we take more knitting and crochet adventures.

Crochet Stretchy Slip Stitch Rib

Crochet Stretch Slip Stitch Rib Tutorial by Marly Bird

Shop Red Heart, America's Favorite Yarn
Last week I published a new FREE Pattern called the Ribbed for Him or Her Hat. This was my take on a messy bun hat and it included a brim. When I wear a hat with a brim I like something that has structure and doesn’t lay flat on my face. I found that by using a crochet stretchy slip stitch rib I could get the perfect brim for this hat.

After publishing the hat pattern, people started to ask me more about the brim. In order to help you all understand the technique better I put together a video tutorial. The video does not show how to make the exact brim for the Ribbed for Him or Her Hat but that will be coming out shortly. I have included a photo tutorial for how to complete the brim and you can read more about it in the blog post I did about the hat.

The crochet stretchy slip stitch rib is great to use for a hat brim or cuffs. It has so much memory which makes for such a stretchy band on your project. Another great thing about this rib is that it looks like knitted rib but is really crochet. In order to get the stretchy properties you will only be working in the back loop of the stitch. Take a look at the video and see where you can apply this crochet ribbing.

Free Crochet Cowl Pattern-Black and White and Red All Over Cowl

Free Pattern Friday with Marly BirdThis week’s Free Pattern Friday is the Free Crochet Cowl Pattern-Black and White and Red All Over Cowl. This pattern uses the shallow post stitch to create it’s texture and pinstripe look. This is a great project to learn a new stitch.

For many of us it is the time of the year when we need to get out our cold weather accessories. It is always a treat to be able to have something new to add to our collection. This cowl is made with three colors of Red Heart With Love. Red Heart With Love is such a soft yarn that you will love wearing this cowl every time it is cold out. With 64 colors to choose from you can customize this cowl to fit your needs.

The shallow post stitch used in this free crochet cowl pattern is very similar to the front and back post stitch that you may already know. The only difference is the placement of the stitch. I have put together a blog post and YouTube tutorial to show you exactly how to do the stitch.

Shallow Post Stitch Crochet Tutorial

Shallow Post Stitch Tutorial with Marly BirdIf you have been following me on Facebook you would have seen the new messy bun hat that I just published. The Chunky Monkey Bulky hat uses a special stitch called the shallow post stitch. Since it is different than a front or back post stitch I put together a shallow post stitch crochet tutorial.

**this post may contain affiliate links**
Front/Back Post Stitch vs. Shallow Post Stitch?

If you already know how to do the front and back post stitch the concept is the same for the shallow post stitch. If you don’t know how to do the front and back post stitch I already have tutorials for them on my YouTube channel.

Learn on YouTube with Marly Bird

The difference comes with where you place your hook. Typically, in a front or back post stitch, you would wrap your hook around the whole post of the stitch in the row below. For the shallow post stitch you stick your hook around the ‘V’ portion of the stitch in the row below.

By using the shallow post stitch you can achieve a pin stripe look depending on how you place the colors. I will show you this effect later in the week with a new pattern.

This may sound a little confusing but trust me you will understand after you watch my tutorial.

I recently published my Chunky Monkey Bulky Hat, which is a great messy bun hat, and it uses the shallow post stitch. Check out my blog post about this hat and test out this new stitch today!

If you want to try this stitch out and the Chunky Monkey Bulky Hat isn’t for you, come back later this week for a Free Pattern Cowl that will also feature this stitch.
