What’s New Buffalo Wool Co?

What’s New Buffalo Wool Co?

What’s New Buffalo Wool Co? was the big question of the day for our sponsors of the Yarn Thing

[image error]podcast with Marly Bird, and Ron Miskin was here to share with us, calling in from an event in Harrisburg, PA. Yes, while on the road!

The Original Buffalo Wool Company was chartered in 1821 by the Hudson Bay Co. in [image error]Red River Manitoba, headed by Lady Selkirk, the wife of the then governor.

The plan was to harvest bison fiber and make ladies hosiery They were founded and funded with £5000,and after spending almost 4/5th of that investment on rum, proceeded to go bankrupt fairly quickly.  Fast forward 190 years, The BWC was revived both in name and spirit by Theresa & Ron Miskin.  Ron an ex-restaurateur and Theresa, a public housing councilor.  Ron and “T” have spent the last 10 years traveling around the globe as “bison ambassadors” showing off the beauty and benefits of bison and bison fiber.[image error]

Follow more adventures with Buffalo Wool Co through their website, www.theBuffaloWoolCo.com as well as their Facebook page, and their products can be found in Amazon as well.

If you missed hearing this LIVE you can catch it as an archive where it aired originally: http://tobtr.com/9755667 or look for the video from Marly’s Birds of a Feather Studio that was Live on Marly’s Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/MarlyBird/

New creativebug Knitting Class with Marly Bird

[image error]You are the first to know! I have a new creativebug knitting class coming out this month. The first lesson is scheduled to come out on February 8th.

With the introduction of this class I will have NINE classes on creativebug’s platform. I love working with their team and truly believe you will enjoy the format of their classes.

This class is an Entraloc workshop. It will be run as a three part series. Every Wednesday over three weeks will release a new part of the class. Throughout the workshop you will be able to make three different projects.

What you will learn in the new creativebug knitting class:

During the three weeks you will learn how to knit entraloc flat in a shawl, and in the round for a cowl and a hat. We will talk about how to decrease and increase with this technique as well.

How to sign up:

Although the class doesn’t launch until February 8th you can sign up now to make sure you don’t miss it.

If you sign up today you will get a two week free trial. If you go to my class page you can click ‘start free trial’ in the top right corner.

You can try out the first two weeks of the class and even try my other classes with creativebug. If you love the classes you can sign up for the monthly membership on creativebug’s site, they have new classes added often.

Crochet Cables and Lace Shell Stitch Pattern

As seen in the Free Crochet One Skein Soft Essentials Cowl, the Crochet Cables and Lace Shells Stitch Pattern is one that is beautiful and easy to memorize. [image error]

The cowl pattern is written in the round but some of you have requested that I offer instructions to be worked flat as well. Because I know exactly what it is like to fall in love with a stitch pattern and wanting to use it in something else, I will certainly offer you the free crochet cables and lace shells stitch pattern to be worked flat.

Just as the Soft Essentials Cowl pattern (see image), the stitch pattern uses the post stitches to create its texture and next to the delicate lace shell stitch. This is a great stitch for many projects and one that I loved to use with the new yarn on the market exclusive to Michaels, Red Heart Soft Essentials Stripes. This yarn is part of the Soft Yarn family but now in BULKY weight!

Crochet Cables and Lace Shell Stitch Pattern

Worked Flat (stitch multiple of 14 + 4)

Abbreviations with Video Tutorials

FPdc: Front Post Double Crochet

FPtc: Front Post Treble Crochet

BPdc: Back Post Double Crochet

Slip Knot

Ch: Chain

Sc: single crochet

Hdc: half double crochet

Dc: double crochet

Tc: treble crochet

TCH: Turning Chain

St(s): Stitch(es)

Pattern

Foundation Row (RS): Work a chain in a multiple of 14 plus 4 stitches.

Designer Note: It is best to do at least three repeats for your gauge swatch.

Skip 5 chains (counts as a dc, and 2 foundation chains), [(dc, ch 1) 3 times, dc] (shell stitch created) in next ch, skip next 2 chain, *Dc in next 4 ch, skip 2 chain, shell in next chain, skip 4 chain, shell in next chain, skip 2 chain; rep from * to last 10 chain, dc in next 4 chain, skip 2 chain, shell in next chain, dc in last chain, turn.

Begin Crochet Cables and Lace Shells Stitch Pattern (worked flat)

Row 1 (WS): Ch 3 (counts as a Dc), shell in center ch-1 space of next shell, skip [dc, ch 1, dc], * BPdc in next 4 sts, * [shell in center ch-1 space of next shell] twice, skip [dc, ch 1, dc]; rep from * for repeat to last shell, shell in center ch-1 space of last shell, Dc in top of TCH, turn.

Row 2 (RS cable row): Ch 3 (counts as Dc), shell in center ch-1 space of next shell, *FPdc in next post stitch, skip 1 post stitch, FPtc in next post stitch, FPtc in skipped post stitch (crossing in front of previous st), FPdc in next post stitch, [shell in center ch-1 space of next shell] twice; rep from * for repeat to last 4 post stitches, FPdc in next post stitch, skip 1 post stitch, FPtc in next post stitch, FPtc in skipped post stitch (crossing in front of previous st), FPdc in next post stitch, shell in center ch-1 space of next shell, Dc in top of Tch, turn.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 to desired length ending on a row 1[image error]

Designer note: just want to point out that the last row for working this stitch pattern flat should be a row 1 (WS), but if you are making the cowl in the round you will notice that I have you end on a cable row. The cowl ends that way because I was using up only one skein of yarn and needed to make sure I didn’t break into a new ball by working one more row.

Final Row to even up the height of the stitches (RS): Ch 3 (counts as a Dc), Dc in space between tch and first Dc of shell, hdc in next ch-1 space, sc in next ch-1 space, hdc in next ch-1 space, dc in space between last dc of shell and next post stitch, * FPtc in 4 post stitches, dc in space between last FPdc and first dc of shell, hdc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp, hdc in next ch-1 sp, hdc in space between the two shells, hdc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp, hdc in next ch-1 sp, dc in space between the last dc of the shell and the first FPdc of next repeat; rep from * to last 4 post stitches,FPtc in 4 post stitches, dc in space between last FPdc and first dc of shell, hdc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp, hdc in next ch-1 sp, dc in space between the last dc of the shell and the TCH, Dc in top of Tch. Fasten off.

Crochet One Skein Soft Essentials Cowl

This week’s Free Pattern Friday is the Free Crochet One Skein Soft Essentials Cowl. This pattern uses the post stitches to create it’s texture and next to the delicate lace shell stitch. This is a great project to learn a new stitch and use a new yarn on the market exclusive to Michaels, Red Heart Soft Essentials Stripes.

For many of us it is the time of the year when we need to get out our cold weather accessories. It is always a treat to be able to have something new to add to our collection. This cowl is made with one skein of Red Heart Soft Essentials Stripes. This yarn is part of the Soft Yarn family but now in BULKY weight!

The stitch pattern I used for the cowl only has a 14 stitch multiple and two rows making it easily memorizable. It is a fun stitch pattern using post stitches to make crochet cables along with a lace shell stitch. Not sure you know what those stitches are? No worries, I did a video to show you how to do it!

The Knitter’s Journal by Jane Klein

The Knitter’s Journal by Jane Klein

The Knitter’s Journal by Jane Klein is a handy resource that we learned about on the Yarn Thing [image error]podcast with Marly Bird.

Jane Klein was an elementary school teacher for many years and then a psychotherapist.  After retirement, she got an idea for an on line internet knitting kit company located in NYC. They were just at the Vogue Knitting Expo showing their kits, the book and some accessories as well, the favorite wwas the ‘Grab and Go’ knit which sold out. Another item that was very popular were the animal scarves.

Finally the essential knitting journal that can be customized to meet your personal needs. For the novice, tables of yarn estimates, understanding yarn labels, properties of yarn and recommended books. Knitters of all levels will benefit from the needle inventory, swatch and needle gauge. But what makes this book special is that we have unique features such as 6 erasable swatch pockets to keep track of your current projects and pages that allow you to keep samples of your yarn stash. The spiral binding with elastic page holder add the perfect finishing touches.

We can be found at www.janesknittingkits.com and Facebook.
