The Flood of ChatGPT Crap About to Clog Up Publishing - Counter Craft

Editors know. They won't buy it.
Today, Panzer went to the Counter Craft site. There he found a post about ChatGPT Crap. In a post earlier this week Panzer did tell you about ChatGPT being known for writing crap. According to Lincoln Michel's post, people are submitting ChatGPT works to publications as their own. Editors aren't being fooled and are closing down their submission portals. Editors know garbage when they see it.  (Near the beginning of the post you will be prompted to subscribe but, if you click the continue reading prompt, you don't need to. You can subscribe for free or paid.)
Panzer says, "Don't try to pass ChatGPT work off as your own. You will get caught."
Note: This is a long post. You should read it all; especially, if you are planning to submit ChatGPT work as your own. Bring a large cup of cocoa, a muffin and a chocolate chip cookie for today's reading selection.

25 Marvelous Writing Conferences and Workshops in March 2023 - Publishing ... and Other Forms of Insanity

Today's trip into the Catosphere took Panzer to the Publishing . .. and Other Forms of Insanity site. There he found a post about conferences and workshops for writers.  March is a busy month.
Erica Verrillo's post includes 25 writing conferences and workshops in March. There are opportunities to attend fiction, nonfiction and publishing conferences and workshops. Some are small with a projected attendance of 200 people and some are large with a projected attendance of 20,000 people. Most are in-person. Panzer says, "Be sure to read the attendance guidelines." Note: This is a long medium length post. Bring a cup of cocoa and a large muffin for today's reading selection. If you plan to follow the links to the various sites,  you'll need to decide what to bring to eat and drink.

Oral Argument Set in Internet Archive Copyright Case - Publishers Weekly

Today Panzer is feeling better, so our recovered kitty pilot made a trip to the Publishers Weekly site. With hardly any digging at all in the posts, he found one about the copyright infringement court case against the Internet Archive.
According to the post by Andrew Albanese, the attorneys for the publishers and the attorneys for the Internet Archive (IA) will present their oral arguments to the judge beginning on March 20. The case involves the IA scanning and "lending" books without the knowledge of or payments to publishers and authors. The IA says they are a library and therefore can do it. The publishers say the IA isn't a library, it's a piracy site. Now, the judge gets to decide.
It still hurts where I got that shot.
Panzer says, "Hmm ... Can anybody just get up one morning and say, 'I'm a library'?"
Note: This is a medium length post. Bring a cup of tea and a muffin for your reading selection.

What 'AI" Isn't: An Interview with Thomas Cox on ChatRPT - Publishing Perspectives

Today, Panzer found an interesting post over at the Publishing Perspectives site. It's a post about what ChatGPT isn't.
The post by Porter Anderson is an interview with Thomas Cox. In the interview he explains why ChatGPT can't separate truth from fiction in the answers it gives to your questions. Given this, there's no way to tell what's information and what's misinformation. He also explains why artificial 'intelligence' is a misnomer. ChatGPT is not a thinking being nor is it intelligent. Included in the post are several links to other information about AI.

Cat says, At least they're good for something. At least they're good for something.
Panzer says, "I watched Mom work with that ChatGPT. It's no smarter than a puppy and that's not much."
Note: This is a long post. Bring a large cup of cocoa and a large muffin for today's reading selection. If you plan to follow the links in the post, you'll need to decide what to bring to eat and drink.

A Monday Panzerism

Panzer on moral concepts:
Mom said, "Bad kitty," when I scratched the furniture.
You know ...
What's His Name always says Mom is pretty smart.
So, I thought about what Mom said for a long time in between my morning nap and my noon nap.
And ...
This is what I decided:
Sorry ... You're wrong again, Mom.*
There are two ways to look at it,
My way ...
And ...
The wrong way.

Findaway Voices, Machine Learning and the New Rights Frontier - Writer Beware(R) - Update

Today's trip into the Catosphere took Panzer to the Writer Beware (R) site. There with a tiny bit of digging in the posts our inquisitive kitty found what he was looking for. It's an update to a post by Victoria Strauss Panzer told you about last week.

In last week's Writer Beware (R) post she told you about the clause in the Findaway Voices contract which allowed Apple to use author's audio books to train Apple's AI to do audible books.
One visit was all it took.
The new post includes an important update about that contract clause. After audio book narrator members complained to SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) about the contract clause, the group contacted and met with Findaway. It was brought to Findaway's attention, that the contract could not force authors to sign away narrators rights without proper negotiations with the narrators union. Findaway agreed to remove the clause.
Panzer says, "That didn't take long to fix."
Note:This is a long post. Bring a large cup of cocoa and a big muffin for today's reading selection.
