Let’s Edit a Novel 📑🖊 (Day 8)

3½ chapters done today!

It’s become pretty clear to me that chapters 4-6 have been the hardest to edit in this book. They’re big chapters, with a lot of characters in them, and I’ve been having to do big cuts and re-writes.

It’s okay though.

Soon they will shine~ 🌱

Q&A: “How do you get yourself to edit/revise when you really don’t feel like it?”

It depends. If the reason I don’t feel like editing is because I’m tired (or out of spoons) then I just recognize the boundaries of my physical body & just r...

Let’s Edit a Novel 📑🖊 (Day 7)

Second Pass, Start! ✨

Today’s day was a bit on the short side (‘cause I was busy with other stuff), but I still managed to get through the first four chapters of the book!

Little by little, the writing gets better.

The whole plant metaphor is truer than ever~ 😅🌱

Q&A: “What do you do during this 'second pass’ of the editing process?”

My focus at this stage is just to make the story flow better, rephrase/cut clunky sentences, and search for anything that breaks the groove.

I achieve this by reading my w...

My bro lent me a bunch of Junji Ito manga, warning me that “it’s not scary, most of it is funny or just goofy.”

And he wasn’t wrong.

In the story I just finished two giant ghosts banged so hard, and for so long, that two towns straight-up exploded & killed everyone. Hell yeah.

Let’s Edit a Novel 📑🖊 (Day 6)

The first revision pass of this novel is done!!

✅ All chapters read
✅ All revision notes cleared
✅ All big changes/fixes complete

This is only the first of several passes. There’s lots of work ahead still, but it’s good to take the time to appreciate one’s hard work. 🌱💕

Q&A: “What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever had to fix/change while editing a book?”

I’ve had my share of embarrassing typos over the years. Here are some classics:

❌ “She burrowed her brow.”
✔ “She furrowed her brow.”

❌ “Tears...

Hi, I have a question! Do you find it’s easier to start with an outline, or write as you go? If the latter, how do you avoid drafting burnout? If the former, how do you know when you’re “ready” to start writing? Thanks!

Honestly, I do only the slightest amount of outlining before writing a novel. We’re talking like, two afternoon of writing down notes and I’m all set to go. This is mostly because I used to outline (a lot) and that led to drafting burnout, so there’s my solution to that little problem!

As to how to know when I’m ready to write, here’s a little secret:

I don’t outline until I’m ready to write the book.
I outline until I’m ready to write the first chapter.

The thing about outlining is that it is quite...
