DAY 142 - A Good Ear

Welcome my wonderful readers!

It's now been two months since I left BOCA, a Korean English academy where I taught writing for nearly a year before returning to my own writing on a full time basis.

One of the fundamentals I tried to instill into the developing minds of these young people is the importance to have a good ear. Like singers and musicians, writers need to have the ability to not only create with passion, but also to hear with objectivity if they are to have a high level of quality in their work.

What do I mean by "hear with objectivity"? Like a singer who's not in pitch and realizes this when they sing a few notes, writers need to read their own work as if they were reading another's, being able to identify if the literature reads smoothly or not. And like an out of tune singer in need of a vocal coach, some writers might need the hand of an experienced wordsmith to help them in their development of becoming a skilled storyteller.

Outside of finding a personal mentor, the best thing a writer can do to strengthen their craft is to read great literary works, for the more you go on these journeys told with words, the more your brain will absorb the artful use of vocabulary, proper structure, and other fine methods of the trade.

So once you sit down to write your own masterpiece, allow part of your editing process to be reading your work aloud to yourself, for when you develop a good ear as a writer, that process of what to change and how to change it will become second nature, to where the words, sentences, and paragraphs all flow together seamlessly.

See you tomorrow:)
