“Bruise”
For GRIP, my latest release, I commissioned an Atlanta-based spoken word artist to write an original piece called “Bruise”. I ended up co-writing some of it, and am so pleased with how it turned out.

Driving something foreign, windows with black tint
Handcuffed on the side of the road, second home for black men
Like we don’t have a home that we trying to get back to when
PoPo pulls me over with no infractions,
Under the speed limit, seat belt even fastened,
Turned on Rosecrans when two cruisers collapsed in
Barking orders, yeah, this that Cali harassment
Guns drawn, neighbors looking from front lawns and windows
I know cops got it hard, don’t wanna make a wife a widow
But they act like I ain’t paying taxes, like your boy ain’t a citizen
They think I’m riding filthy, like I’m guilty pleading innocence.
They say it’s ‘Protect & Serve’, but check my word
Sunny skies, ghetto birds overhead stress your nerves,
They say if you ain’t doin’ wrong, you got nothin’ to fear,
But the people sayin’ that, they can’t be livin’ here . . .
We all BRUISE,
It’s that black and blue
A dream deferred,
Nightmare come true
In another man’s shoes,
Walk a mile or two
Might learn a couple things
I’m no different than you!
You call for the good guys when you meet the bad men,
I’m wearing a blue shield and I still feel the reactions
When I patrol the block, I can sense dissatisfaction
There’s distrust, resentment in every interaction,
Whether the beat cop, lieutenant, sergeant or the captain
We roll our sleeves up and we dig our hands in
I joined the force in order to make a difference,
Swore to uphold the law, protect men, women and children,
These life and death situations, we make split-second decisions
All for low pay, budget cutbacks and restrictions
We’re ambushed in Dallas, now where’s all the chatter
Gunned down in Baton Rouge, don’t blue lives need to matter?
Not just a job—it’s a calling, a vocation,
My wife’s up late pacin’, for my safety—she’s praying,
And yet you call me racist? You wanna trap me with your phone?
I’m just a man with a badge trying my best to make it home.
We all BRUISE,
It’s that black and blue
A dream deferred,

“I’ve got control issues.” Rhyson sucks my bottom lip between his like he can’t help himself before he goes on. “I’ll work on ‘em. I swear.”
“Yes, but….” I pull his top lip between mine, sucking and groaning into the contact I’ve missed so much. “We need to—”
“We’re doing what we need to do right now.”
He fuses our lips together, stoking the passion higher with every second we touch. It’s even better than I remember, kissing him. His tongue brushes inside my jaw, over my teeth, licking the roof. Repossessing me with every stroke. I taste his desperation, his regret. I know he must taste my forgiveness because I can’t hold it back. It rushes up to meet him, burning my throat and streaking tears down my face.
“I’m so sorry I hurt you.” His voice wavers as he wets his lips with me tears. “I won’t do it again. I promise. Not like that.”
“I know.” I slide my fingers into the cool, silky hair. “I believe you.”
“I miss you so fucking much, Kai,” he breathes the words over my neck. “I need…I have to…baby…”
He gives up on words, pressing me back onto the soft hay. He dips his nose into the cleft barely visible between my breasts, inhaling.
“Pear and cinnamon,” he whispers, continuing down my torso, past my waist. His hands slide the dress up my legs, and I’m already gasping just from his palms caressing behind my knees. His head disappears under my dress. He pushes my panties aside, and his lips close over me. My back arches up, pressing my breasts into the air like an offering. He slides the panties off altogether, pulling my legs over his shoulders. He nibbles at the lips, separating me with his tongue. Spreading his mouth over me as his hands traverse the backs of my thighs to grip my bare butt, pulling me into his hunger.
“This is mine,” he says hotly against the wet flesh. “And I’m yours, Kai. Nothing changes that. Ever. You know that, right?”

I know it’s just a date, but it feels special. We’re not party people. We’re as content…no, more content…staying home. Or going to the studio. Or to the beach. But a date? Dinner? Like normal people? Yeah, I’m excited.
Ella thought it would be fun to play up my Asian ancestry. The shantung silk dress she brought over is the color of cherries and has black piping. It’s sleeveless with a stiff mandarin collar framing my neck. High side slits extend from the mid-calf hem to a few inches above my knees, flashing my thighs with each step. The material clings to my every dip and curve. Ella insisted I ditch the bra, so my breasts strain against the tight material. The rear view provides the dress’s true drama. A tiny onyx button clasps at my nape, and from there the dress cuts out, laying my entire back bare. The dress lovingly exaggerates and cups the rounded curve of my butt.
Glancing over my shoulder, even I see that it is…provocative. Ella knotted my hair and secured it with shiny black chopsticks. My make up is heavier than usual, with pencil and smoky shadow highlighting the slant of my eyes. My lips pop a vibrant matte red.
“Kai!” Rhyson’s voice climbs the stairs. “Come on, babe. We’ve got a reservation.”
“Be right down,” I yell back. Why do we even have intercom when Rhyson always resorts to the old cup and string method of communication?
“Oh!” Ella digs in her little bag of tricks, handing me a small beaded clutch. “You’ll need this.”
“Thanks, Ella.”
“And those.” She points to the backless heels on the bed which add a good four inches to my height.
I step into the heels, teetering a little until I get used to the air up here.
“Pep!” Rhyson yells again from downstairs. “Baby, we need to go.”
Ella gathers her things and heads toward the landing with me. We’re chatting, laughing over something from Grip’s shoot, when I catch sight of Rhyson at the bottom of the stairs wearing a slate gray suit with a navy button up, no tie. The slacks are impeccably tailored. He’s gotten his hair cut today. Must have been one of his “appointments.” It’s tapered in the back and on the sides, but still longer on top, dipping into his eyes. He looks like exactly what he is. A devastating famous rock star who can have anyone he wants. If I pinched myself every time I tried to wake up from this dream where I’m the one he wants, I’d be black and blue for the rest of our lives.
I stop right in front of him on the last step, which between my high heels and the elevation of the step, puts us basically eye to eye. We stare at one another for long moments, his eyes thoroughly assessing me, and mine doing the same. Ella says her good-byes, and I wave vaguely in her direction, transfixed by Rhyson’s stormy gaze. Finally he grabs my hand, draws my wrist to his lips and leaves a sweet kiss there.
“Well, I hope you’re happy,” he says softly, making another journey up and then down my body with his eyes. “You did it.”
“Did what?” I’m startled by how husky and breathless I sound.
“You’ve made me want to stay home and say screw our plans.”
“Remember, reservations.”
I lean in to plant a kiss on his full lips, barely resisting the impulse to thrust my tongue in and set off some fireworks. I step down and walk past him. His indrawn breath once he sees the back of the dress renders a pleased smile on my face. My hand is on the door handle when his wide palm splays over my stomach, pulling me up short. His hard chest warms my back.
“Your ass in this dress is obscene, Pep,” he husks at my ear, grinding his erection into my butt. I’m reminded of my own cries bouncing off the bathroom walls this morning when he took me from behind as we watched each other in the mirror.
I glance up and over my shoulder, giving him my most seductive smile and turn to face him.
“I know.”
