Here are ten ways to have a difficult leadership conversation and succeed:

Be strategic about time and place: As a leader, it’s important to be strategic about the timing and location of difficult conversations. Planning the timing and location of these conversations can help ensure that you are at your best and able to handle the emotions that come with them. Consider doing difficult conversations outside while walking to take advantage of the benefits of movement.

Validate difficult emotions early: As a leader, it’s important to recognize and accept difficult emotions, rather than trying to solve or avoid them, to reduce emotional intensity and tension. Difficult emotions, while uncomfortable, are not dangerous.

As a leader, it’s important to have a balance of care and accountability for your employees. While it’s important to have a supportive and motivating environment, going overboard in certain areas can have negative consequences for both the leader and the team.

Here are six times when a leader can go overboard and they should stop immediately:

When leaders are being a perfectionist:  When leaders are perfectionists, they tend to scrutinize everyone’s work, disempowering their team members in the process. This can lead to disengagement and turnover and can also derail the process. The best leaders understand that perfectionism is a constant source of stress and that it’s impossible to achieve. Instead, they focus on setting realistic goals and working towards them.

When leaders are asking for too many options: Effective leaders make quick decisions, even if it entails painful consequences. Overboard leaders can get stuck in a cycle of asking for too many options, but the best leaders understand that indecision and over-analysis can lead to missed opportunities and wasted time. They take steps to avoid this and make decisions that will benefit the team.

When leaders are leading with autonomy: Leaders can also go overboard when leading with autonomy by not being inclusive and leaving talent behind. This can make their team resentful. The best leaders avoid this by leading with valuing the contributions of their team members.

When leaders care too much: Can leaders care too much, yes they can when it makes them avoid confrontation or giving honest feedback. A true caring leader understands that making difficult decisions and inflicting short-term discomfort can lead to long-term benefits for everyone, and the real caring is being honest.

When leaders are micromanaging: Micromanaging is a way leaders can go overboard, stifling creativity and initiative among their team members. As a leader, here are the four critical times you must keep your distance:

When you play favorites: Favoritism is a surefire way to erode trust and create division among your team. When you show favoritism, it sends a message that some employees are more valuable than others, and this can lead to resentment and negative feelings. As a leader, it’s important to be fair and impartial in your decision-making and interactions with your team.

When your judgement is being questioned: As a leader, your judgement is crucial to the success of your team. However, there may be times when your judgement is called into question. When this happens, it’s important to keep your distance and listen to the concerns of your team. Take time to reflect on the situation and consider different perspectives. Be open to feedback and be willing to make changes if necessary.

When you have crossed boundaries: Boundaries are essential in any relationship, and this includes the relationship between a leader and their team. Empathy: Great leaders are empathetic communicators. They understand the perspectives and feelings of others, and are able to respond accordingly. They are able to put themselves in the shoes of their team members and stakeholders, and communicate in a way that is respectful and understanding.

5 Important Tips to Help Leaders Avoid Overwhelm

Leadership can be a demanding role, and it’s all too easy for leaders to become overwhelmed by the pressures and responsibilities that come with the job. However, there are steps that leaders can take to avoid or manage feelings of overwhelm.

As an executive leadership coach, here are five important tips I coach my clients, to help them avoid becoming overwhelmed:

Prioritize self-care: Leaders need to take care of themselves physically, emotionally, and mentally in order to be able to lead effectively. This means taking time to exercise, eat well, get enough sleep, and engage in activities that bring them joy and relaxation.

Learn to delegate: As a leader, it’s easy to feel like you need to do everything yourself in order to ensure that it’s done right. However, delegating tasks to other team members can be a great way to reduce your workload and build the leadership skills of others.

Set boundaries: It’s important for leaders to set clear boundaries around their time and energy. This means learning to say “no” to tasks or requests that aren’t essential, and being mindful of the time and energy that different tasks require.

Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment, without judgment. By focusing on the present moment, leaders can reduce feelings of overwhelm and anxiety, and make more effective decisions.

They also motivate and support their team members to achieve these goals, by clarifying roles and creating an environment that allows them to do their best.

Setting values: Leaders are responsible for setting the values and culture of an organization, and they must lead by example. They must model the values and behaviors that they expect from their team members, which helps to build trust and reinforce the strength of the organization’s values.
