What the Mind Needs to Tune Into Cosmic Intelligence
In my previous articles – The (re)-Discovery of the Human Energy Field and Mindfulness, Pathway to Divine Consciousness – we speak about Prana or Qi regulating the human body and mind with Light Energy and Information. It would then make sense for us to connect to this energy in the strongest way possible. The company NESHealth who is redefining our understanding of the Human Energy Field and how to remove energetic blockages in the body to restore physical and mental health, describes Source Energy as follows:
Cultures from around the world and throughout history speak of pervasive natural energy, calling it Qi, Prana, and other names. NES calls this pervasive, universal energy, the Source Energy, and we feel that it is not some unknown cosmic energy but a real energy of physics, what is called Zero-Point Energy (ZPE), the energy of the Zero Point Field (ZPF). The ZPF in quantum field theory is is associated with the vacuum, which is erroneously thought of as empty space, but quantum physics tells us there can be no such thing as empty space. It has shown…that space is awash in the energy of microscopic vibrations produced by the interaction of subatomic particles. In fact, physicists estimate that there is more energy in ZPF than there is in all the matter in the universe. As Peter Fraser (NES founder) has shown, cavities (more or less hollow structures) are important structures for collecting and storing Source Energy or ZPE. It is no surprise that all the major organs of the body are cavities themselves and that they are composed of smaller structures that are called microtubules, which are tiny cavities. Cells are also cavities and contain within them many other tubular-shaped structures. Cavities are efficient structures in which to store, amplify, and even tune energy.
NESHealth and many others scientific organizations are confirming that our bodies are energy processing organisms. Furthermore, Energy carries Information. NESHealth believes that Source Energy is supplying critical information for the proper functioning of the Human Energy Field. Spiritual traditions describe connecting to Source Energy as linking up to Universal Consciousness, Big Mind, and the Will of God. To be aligned with the Source / Qi / Prana is to experience complete alignment with the natural order of the universe and divine consciousness.
As the brain is the processor / distributor of information in the body, then anything that distorts or causes noise in the brain will reduce our ability to connect to Qi / Prana / Source Energy in the cleanest way possible. The key thing that clogs up the brain is of course our thoughts and emotions. The best way to reduce that noise is through regular meditation. Yogis and mystics throughout the ages have travelled via this route to connect to higher states of consciousness:
The flowering of love is meditation. – Jiddu Krishnamurti
When there are thoughts, it is distraction: when there are no thoughts, it is meditation. – Ramana Maharshi
If every day you practice walking and sitting meditation and generate the energy of mindfulness and concentration and peace, you are a cell in the body of the new Buddha. This is not a dream but is possible today and tomorrow. – Thich Nhat Hanh
Neuroscience lately is catching up to the Mystics – In a study by Harvard Neuroscientists lead by Sara Lazar, they identified that when we meditate, we decrease the beta waves in the brain. Beta waves are associated with active mental activity and are an indication that we are thinking. Conversely, when beta waves are reduced, then we can say that we reduced our thinking. Professor Lazar’s team produced this before and after photo of a novice meditator to demonstrate the reduction in beta waves after a 30 minute meditation session. As you can see, the brain activity is much calmer and “neuro-noise” is significantly reduced.
MRI images before and after 30 minutes of meditation: Source: Psychiatry Research Neuroimaging
But to go to the next level, wouldn’t it be even better to reduce the noise from thoughts and emotions throughout our day in order to maximize connection to Source Energy? This would imply being in a semi-meditative state throughout the day. This doesn’t mean not thinking, rather, it means being very much in control of our thinking and choosing when and what to put cognitive resources to work on. When we operate in this arena, then we become very picky of what we let into our mental sphere – stray thoughts, disturbing external stimulus (that leads to unwanted and un-necessary thoughts), un-necessary interruptions, and of course, the dreaded multi-tasking.
Multi-tasking, which has become a “badge of honor” in our digitally driven world, may be one of the worst things we can do in terms of increasing the noise level in our brains and distorting our ability to connect cleanly to Source Energy. Neurologist Adam Gazzaley has created a well done documentary on the impact of multitasking on the brain. Below is a video of a lecture he gave at UC Irvine on the the Distracted Mind and you can read a summary of the key points of the Distracted Mind here:
Isn’t it ironic, single-tasking may be becoming the new ‘personal luxury item’ – but it may be much more than that. It may in fact be a profound tool to reclaim our connection to personal mastery, elevated levels of consciousness, and the access to Source Energy that powers all creation.
What else causes “noise” in our brain and mental systems?
In our modern world, tops on this list would be the various type of “disturbing” media. Much of what passes for “entertainment” these days contains absurdly high levels of violent and sexual content – many television programs, news broadcasts, movies, video games, and music are produced with the focus of creating disturbing images and themes that are meant to scare us and induce high states of arousal. Even most “news” programs are overly focused on presenting the most violent and depressing aspects of our society. The producers of these media products know that the reptilian portion of the human brain is hard wired for fight or flight and is on high alert for scary things that could be a problem. Therefore, if they show us scary things, we are more inclined to watch, and when we watch, the advertisers pay up. The money wins, society loses.
Media use a tool dictators have used with great success for centuries. They spread fear and pessimism because it sells. Editorial choices are determined by business interests and by stock prices. Newspapers have become like toothbrushes. Stories have become commercials. – Juriaan Kamp, Founder of The Intelligent Optimist magazine, in The Intelligent Optimist’s Guide to Life
But you may ask how bad could it be to watch a scary movie, tv program, 24/7 news, or play that violent video game for an hour? Well, there are two things to consider. One, does it raise violent, aggressive, or irratitive behavior in yourself or others. The research on that front seems to indicate yes, but the actual severity of the affect varies from person to person. So if you have violent or aggressive tendencies, or are even highly emotionally sensitive, consuming violent and disturbing media will heighten the effects.
The second thing to consider is that our thoughts create our reality. So, if we are filling our heads with disturbing images and emotions from the various media we consume, we end up manifesting that stimuli into our material world. In addition, given the strong mind-body connection, the impact on our physical health is significant. Should we be surprised that there are major upticks in all major disease categories along with psychological issues such as depression?
Between 1990 – one year before the twenty-four hour news invention – and 2010, the world population grew 40 percent – mostly in developing countries. According to the World Health Organization, the number of people suffering from depression rose 300 percent – mostly in rich countries – making it one of the biggest challenges to health and well-being. I’m not a social scientist, but I see a remarkable correlation between the rise of depression and pessimism and the twenty-four-hour negative news invasion over the same twenty-year period…Most people don’t pay much attention to how they feed their minds. And the impact of what we put in our eyes and ears is as deep as what we put in our mouths. ’News is to the mind what sugar is to the body. News is easy to digest’ – wrote Rolf Dobelli in the Guardian. To be healthy, we need to avoid sugar. It’s the same with the news. Like bad eating habits, continuous exposure to bad news makes you sick. – Juriaan Kamp
The sad truth is that most of what passes for news does us no good. We are fed disturbing images and content to keep us glued in fear to the screen, but the really helpful stuff is not covered, or at least covered very superficially. And, given the amount of time the average person consumes “news” content, the impact to the stability of our minds is high:
News is often about things you cannot influence. What can you do about the next bomb blast in Afghanistan? Or even about the next tortured and twisted soul who opens fire on an innocent school crowd? Nothing. But these sad stories do make you feel powerless and helpless. That’s how the news feeds pessimism and depression. It’s a fair guess that you read some twenty-four new stories every day, or at least their headlines. That comes to some 10,000 news stories per year. Do you remember a story you read in the past year that helped you make better decision about your life? Most news is not helpful to you. It interrupts your thinking. It stands in the way of creativity and the emergence of new ideas. As Rolf Dobelli wrote in the Guardian, “If you want to come up with old solutions, read news. If you are looking for new solutions, don’t.” – Juriaan Kamp
So, are there some tangible and real steps we can take to disconnect from this media firehose that is degrading our minds and affecting our ability to connect cleanly to Source Energy? Most definitely, and within a our highly interconnected digital world, there are a myriad of options that can provide us a new and much healthier media diet. I’ve expanded upon this in great length in the article – 21 Ideas to Free Yourself from Mass Media. And, one book to explore in particular would be Three Simple Steps by Trevor Blake. Blake has mastered the art of using the power of the mind to control his reality and is very careful with what he lets inside his mental sphere. The book is a wonderful life story and includes his method of mastering the Power of Thought.
So to Quickly Summarize:
Having a meditative like mind-state as much as possible throughout our day helps us to more strongly connect with and stay connected to Source Energy. This strengthens our Human Energy Field and provides for great advances in our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. The more we can learn to embrace being in silence, in appreciating quiet, the better. Silence quiets the mind, and allows us to connect to Universal Consciousness for deep insight and inspiration.
Anything that “disturbs” our mind un-unecessarily is counter-productive to connecting to Source. This means taking back control of our minds, and proactively deciding what we will think and what content we will consume.
Multitasking and consuming “disturbing” media are two of the biggest issues we face when attempting to calm our minds, staying in the present moment, and harnessing the power of thought to create our desired reality.
We have many choices available to us to proactively access a more healthy media diet so that we can reclaim peace of mind, and connect with the Source Energy that is powering every aspect of our reality.

Geertje Couwenbergh on being an ‘Innerpreneur’
Geertje Couwenbergh, the author, teacher, and founder of Potential Buddha spoke in the Intelligent Optimist in April 2013 about moving beyond Entrepreneurship into the more elevated realm of being an “Innerpreneur”:
By now, I’ve come to believe that innerpreneurship might provide not only me, but many of us, with a new model for thinking about work, money, life, and society. Being an innerpreneur means you see work not as time out from “real life” but as fertile soil where your deepest ethical and spiritual convictions can flower. Every innerpreneur’s business plan is founded on the awareness of connectedness – emotional, climatological or economic. The innerpreneur’s way of doing business is infused with friendliness and curiosity. Whether you’re a road worker, manager, writer or secretary, whatever you do can connect you to a sense of wonder at life.
For Couwenbergh, work has become a vocation of inner exploration and a path to higher levels of consciousness:
You might say that the only true work as an innerpreneur is to turn yourself inside out. You must drop the poker face of professionalism – that all-too-common excuse we use to lock ourselves into the harness of our on-the-job identity, whether it’s the strict boss, cheerful dental hygienist, loudmouthed construction worker or tormented writer. The innerpreneur wants to do her work as a human being first, then as a garbage collector, manager, or lawyer. After all, who are we without our Linkedin recommendations, our company car – or our rebellious I’ll -never-work-for-a-boss mentality?
Greetje believes that the path of innerpreneurship may even be the answer to finally remaking our economic systems into one’s that are more fair and equitable:
Still, grounding your way of doing business in a relationship with groundlessness, not knowing, and its partner, space, is incredibly powerful. It could even offset the crumbling of our culture’s economic – and ultimately, ethical – pillars. We’ve lost sight of the innerpreneur’s path. We’ve poured concrete over it and turned it into a five lane highway. Fortunately though, our hearts haven’t forgotten the path. More than that, walking that path – living our human existence fully – is our most personal and most shared desire.

Zen Teacher Norman Fischer on finding Love through Emptiness
In a recent piece for Shambhala Sun magazine, Zen teacher Norman Fischer writes beautifully on the Heart Sutra, the Buddha’s treatise of achieving love and compassion through mastering the concept of ‘emptiness’. But empty of what you may ask:
Empty of separate self, empty of weightiness, empty of burden, empty of boundary…The emptiness of the Heart Sutra isn’t the emptiness of despair; it’s the emptiness of all limitation and boundary. It is open, released.
Too often we find ourselves so constrained by our thoughts, circumstances, and historical conditioning, that there is no room to let the fullness and beauty of life enter in its entirety. Only by emptying ourselves of those burdens, can we release ourselves from suffering and move forward into love and oneness with all of reality:
When I am bound inside my own skin and others are bound inside theirs, I have to defend and protect myself from them. And when I do place myself among them, I must do it carefully, which is hard work, because I am often hurt, opposed, and thwarted by others. But when there’s openness, no boundary between myself and others – when it turns out that I literally am others and others literally are me – then love and connection is easy and natural.
May we all one day experience a world with no boundaries or limitations…

Wayne Dyer and The Power of Intention
Wayne Dyer has the wonderful gift of insight and wisdom gained through experience. Coupled with this is an ability to communicate the learnings from his spiritual journey with warmth and literate imagery. In that regard, your life will certainly be illuminated by reading his 2004 book – The Power of Intention. In the opening chapter, the former St. Johns University Education Professor and Psychologist, shares that the book is a sort of demarcation line in his professional and personal life. Up until that time he was focused more on traditional self-help psychology and personal development but in researching and writing The Power of Intention, a different perspective more strongly emerged within him:
My research reveals a fairly common definition of intention as a strong purpose or aim, accompanied by a determination to produce a desired result. People driven by intention are described as having a strong will that won’t permit anything to interfere with achieving their inner desire. I imagine a sort of pit-bull kind of resolve or determination. If you’re one of those people with a never-give-up attitude combined with an internal picture that propels you toward fulfilling your dreams, you fit this description of someone with intention. You, are most likely, a super-achiever and probably proud of your ability to recognize and take advantage of opportunities that arise. For many years, I’ve held a similar belief about intention…Over the past quarter of a century, however, I’ve felt a shift in my thinking from a purely psychological or personal-growth emphasis, toward a spiritual orientation where healing, creating miracles, manifesting, and making a connection to divine intelligence are genuine possibilities.
Dyer goes on to say that it was his battle with his Ego that lead him into his more introspective and spiritual approach:
My writing now emphasizes a belief that we can find spiritual solutions to problems by living at higher levels and calling upon faster energies. In my mind, intention is something much greater than a determined ego or individual will. It’s something almost totally opposite. Perhaps this comes from shedding many levels of ego in my own life, but I also feel the strong influence of two sentences I read in a book by Carlos Castaneda…The Active Side of Infinity…while I was waiting to have a cardiac procedure to open one clogged artery leading into my heart that had caused a mild heart attack. Castaneda’s words were: “Intent is a force that exists in the universe. When sorcerers (those who live of the Source) beckon intent, it comes to them and sets up the path for attainment, which means that sorcerers always accomplish what they set out to do.” When I read those two sentences, I was stunned by the insight and clarity it gave me about the power of intention. Imagine that intention is not something you do, but rather a force that exists in the universe as an invisible field of energy! I had never considered intention in this way before reading Castaneda’s words…I had experienced Satori, or instant awakening, and was intent on offering this insight to others. It had become clear to me that accessing the power of intention relieved so much of the seemingly impossible work of striving to fulfill desires by sheer force of will.
This book holds a very special place in my heart – both literally and figuratively. My father gave me a copy of this book in 2008 in the hospital when I came out of the Operating Room after having a cardiac stent procedure following a mild heart-attack – the same health scenario Wayne Dyer experienced a number of years earlier. He achieved his ‘awakening’ during his “cardiac wake-up call” and that similar event put me on my path to spiritual awakening as well. My father didn’t know the details of the Dyer book, something just lead him to pick it up in the hospital gift shop and bring it up to my room. The universe clearly works in mysterious ways…
In the beginning of the book, Wayne Dyer presents his view of the seven key factors of living an intentional life – I have provided a condensed version of the key nuggets that are included in his much more expansive and eloquent writing. Each short sentence should be contemplated with care in order to fully absorb the timeless wisdom it holds. If you find yourself asking “what did he mean by that” in various places, that’s good. Go find the answers – read broadly, meditate, keep an open mind, and most importantly, keep an open heart. One avenue to explore in particular is to go within yourself – get very quiet and still, then ask questions and listen attentively. The answers will come. Don’t give up, keep questioning and listening over a period of days and months, keep learning to quiet the mind, keep meditating and breathing, master mindfulness, and let love, compassion, gratitude, and kindness be your guides … the answers will definitely come…
Seven Faces of Intention – Wayne Dyer
Be Creative
Give form to your personal intentions
Wayne Dyer’s own examples:
My intention is for all my activities to be directed by Spirit
My intention is to love and radiate my love to my writing and any who might read these words
My intention is to trust in what comes through me and to be a vehicle of Spirit, judging none of it
My intention is to recognize the Spirit as my Source and to detach from my Ego
My intention is to do all that I can to elevate the collective consciousness to be more closely in rapport with the Spirit of the originating supreme power of intention
Be Kind
Kindness given is Kindness returned
Be Love
Being in a state of Love is absolutely necessary to reconnect to Intention – the Source
Love is the force behind the Will of God
Be Beauty
Beauty is not caused, it IS
To come back into conscious contact with your Source, look for and experience beauty in all your undertakings
Be Ever Expansive
By growing intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually, you are identifying with the Universal Mind.
Be Abundant
There’s no scarcity in the universal invisible world of Spirit
The ancestor to every action is a thought
Be Receptive
The universal mind is ready to respond to anyone who recognizes their true relationship to it
It will reproduce whatever conception of itself you impress upon it

Mindfulness – Pathway to Divine Consciousness
The practice of Mindfulness is getting a lot of attention these days from many non-spiritual avenues: medical based stress reduction efforts, corporate wellness programs, creativity workshops, and more. In these new and very welcome pathways, some of the benefits of Mindfulness are embraced (stress reduction, better mental focus, more attunement to the emotions of oneself and others), but the more spiritual underpinnings of Mindfulness are left out.
The same thing ultimately happened with the wider acceptance of meditation in the West. Meditation and Mindfulness are close and intertwined siblings and one relies on the other to realize full manifestation of itself. Meditation as an independent form however came into mainstream thought much earlier. In modern times, it was re-introduced to the West from the East in the 1960’s and some of its spiritual underpinnings came with it. However, over time, in order to drive more widespread adoption, the spiritual component was de-emphasized and only relatively recently are we returning to it in some circles. The Mindfulness movement is following the same path, and is now in the phase where more widespread adoption is desired.
In some ways we can think of Meditation as being an enabler of Mindfulness, in other words a tool to strengthen your mind to be highly present in your moment to moment awareness. Our meditation practice develops the capacity to calm the mind, slow down the train of thought, purposely focus our power of observation, and allow a deeper connection to the interconnected reality we all share. In fact, those with advanced Mindfulness abilities could be thought of as being in a semi-meditative state throughout their waking day. These individuals have learned to quiet their mind chatter, to be quiet observers of their world, and to allow a strong connection to develop to Source Energy to guide and inspire their purposeful thoughts and actions. Mindfulness in this context goes beyond just stress reduction (though you certainly achieve a great deal of calm), or heightened mental focus, it in fact takes you into a much deeper connection with every aspect of your existence. It is a keen driver of higher states of consciousness. When you release yourself from your thoughts and expand your awareness by tapping into the much more powerful set of knowledge and wisdom of Universal or Divine Consciousness, then by definition your own consciousness will rise.
Pathway to Divine Consciousness
In a previous post – The (re)-Discovery of the Human Energy Field – I spoke about how science and technology are validating the existence of the human Aura, Chakras, and Energy Meridians. More and more we are confirming that our bodily existence is driven by Energy and Information. But what is the Source of our Energy? The ancient wisdom cultures stated that Qi and Prana ( pervasive energy fields) were all around us. They were the ‘ether’ in the air so to speak. These cultures also believed that the energy and light from the sun was critical to our health. The company NES Health (covered in the Human Energy Field post), has validated both concepts – the driving of the human energy field from all-pervasive Source Energy and Sun Light.
So it would reason that anything that distorts our connection to this Source Energy, would weaken our Human Energy Field and significantly affect our physical and mental health. If Qi and Prana are all pervasive, then everything in our physical world is interacting with and being nourished by these fields, including ourselves. However, unlike other natural organic forms (a tree for example) or other biological life (animals say), we have advanced level cognitive capabilities. We can think. And, our thoughts themselves have a lot of Energy. We are creators in every sense of the word. But, if Source Energy is the driver of all physical creation, then our thoughts and emotions can either be aligned with Source Energy or they can distort it. If Source Energy is what drives our human Energy Field and provides all the information for the 100,000 cellular actions per second that take place in our bodies, then distorting that energy has grave consequences for human physical and mental function.
In this way then, having a meditation and mindfulness practice, will help you connect more smoothly to Source Energy, even if you don’t recognize the Spiritual implications. You will lower your mind chatter, lower the noise within your human energy field, and achieve a much more robust connection to Source. But we can go much farther if we open ourselves up to the true nature of reality.
That opening up requires surrender – surrendering of our desire to be in charge, to be in control, and to acknowledge that the Source itself – call it Big Mind, The Universe, God, The Divine, whatever is more comfortable for you – is conducting this energetic based reality we are a part of. Further, the Source since it is driving our Human Energy Field, is in fact then participating in this physical reality with us. The Source is sending energy and information and is asking us to receive it and take its lead in what to do in our physical manifestation. The information comes as inspiration, life purpose, and life direction. We then co-create with the Source by manifesting those ideas into the physical plane in the creative manner we choose.
Now, if we distort our connection to the Source Energy or choose to disconnect, then we float in the universe on our own. We are left using the rational brain’s ability to understand what it can within limited human-level knowledge and consciousness. It’s like limiting your research on a topic to whatever files you have on the local hard drive of your computer versus searching on the internet. We can certainly get some things done even with that handicap, but as all great artists and creatives know, the truly great work is when you tap into the intuitive heart and connect with an unlimited source of information, wisdom, and possibilities that is beyond the material plane.
The Mind Receives, the Mind Creates
So being mindful, quiet, attentive, and listening within ourselves, and connecting to our heart-based intuition – brings in the Light, the highest, cleanest signal of Source Energy. And what do we think that Source / God is broadcasting? Why, Love, of course. (see the background on why this is – Seeing the Oneness of our Reality). If our thoughts are aligned with Love Energy, then our Human Body Field prospers. When our thoughts are filled with fear, anger, anxiety, competition, and hate, then we essentially distort, dilute, and block Source Energy from reaching us effectively. The HeartMath Institute has actually measured the physiological effects of having thoughts and emotions centered around love, compassion, and kindness and reported the results in their publication The Energetic Heart:
We have found that the clear rhythmic patterns in beat-to-beat heart rate variability are distinctly altered when different emotions are experienced. These changes in electromagnetic, sound pressure, and blood pressure waves produced by cardiac rhythmic activity are ‘felt’ in every cell in the body, further supporting the heart’s role as a global synchronizing signal. Moreover, evidence suggests that of the bodily organs, the heart may play a particularly important role in emotional experience. Research in the relatively new field of neurocardiology has confirmed that the heart is a sensory organ and acts as a sophisticated information encoding and processing center that enables it to learn, remember, and make independent functional decisions that do not involve the cerebral cortex. Additionally, numerous experiments have demonstrated that patterns of cardiac afferent neurological input to the brain not only affect autonomic regulatory centers, but also influence higher brain centers involved in perception and emotional processing…Sustained positive emotions such as appreciation, love, or compassion, are associated with highly ordered or coherent patterns in the heart rhythms.”
Emotions are reflected in heart rhythm patterns – Source: HeartMath Institute
Real-time heart rate variability (heart-rhythm) pattern of an individual making an intentional shift from a self-induced state of frustration to a genuine feeling of of appreciation.
In other words, the brain is taking emotions and and processing them as information that is fed to major regulatory centers of the body and drives some higher level brain activity itself. So, if we quiet our minds and focus on positive emotions, we are directly affecting our physiology and brain processes in a very positive way. The heart functions as a critical information processor within the human body. But is it picking up “other information” outside the body as well and also feeding that into our physiology?
The heart generates the largest electromagnetic field in the body. The electrical field as measured in an electrocardiogram (ECG) is about 60 times greater in amplitude than the brain waves recorded in an electroencephalogram (EEG). The magnetic component of the heart’s field, which is around 5,000 times stronger than produced by the brain, is not impeded by tissues and can be measured several feet away from the body with Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID)-based magnetometers.
The Power of the Present Moment
So the heart’s powerful electromagnetic field is in a good position to connect with Prana and Qi, the Source Energy. The information it receives there it feeds into the body’s physiological centers and in fact, every cell. It would then reason that if Prana or Qi is Universal Source Energy (the pure undiluted Energy and Information meant to regulate our minds and bodies), that a strong, clear, and smooth heart rhythm would generate the strongest electromagnetic field. Which would then ensure the best connection to Source. If that information is then meant to be sent to the brain for processing and distribution to other body centers, then a mind that is calm will be in a better position to receive that vital information. Thus, we then have a key benefit of Mindfulness and Meditation practice that goes much beyond stress reduction. It goes into the realm of body, mind, and spirit optimization. Tuning our mental receivers into the Present Moment – where you step out of linear time into the only thing that ever exists (the Now), is the key. When instead y0u tune the mind to fearful thoughts of the past or future, you have changed the station from Source Energy to something that doesn’t exist. You’ve become disconnected at that very moment.
When however we start to use Mindfulness to tune into Source Energy in the Present Moment, then we begin to revisit its Eastern origins and the Bridge it provides to Divine Consciousness. Buddhist scholar Alan Wallace spoke of this in a 2008 interview for the Buddhist publication, Tricycle:
In Mahayana Buddhism, right mindfulness is…the intention to achieve perfect enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings. Without such a view and motivation, it is said the practice of mindfulness and all related forms of meditation will not lead to Buddhahood…Meditations for the cultivation of the four sublime virtues of lovingkindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity are all practiced with mindfulness…Generally speaking, right mindfulness is introspection involving clear comprehension. It must be guided by right view, motivated by right intention, grounded in ethics, and be cultivated with right effort.
Or, as Buddhist scholar Andrew Olendzki says so well in his book, Unlimiting Mind, when minfulness and wisdom are cultivated together, then we realize the true goal of the practice:
Wisdom, understood as seeing things as they are, is the crucial transformative principle in the Buddhist tradition. Just as you can practice meditation without manifesting mindfulness, so too can you practice mindfulness all you want without cultivating wisdom. If mindfulness is not conjoined with insight (another word for wisdom), it will not in itself bring about a significant change in your understanding. As with the arising of mindfulness, so also for the arising of wisdom: it cannot be forced by the will or engineered by the technology of meditation. Yet the conditions that support the emergence of wisdom can be patiently and consistently cultivated, moment after mindful moment, until it unfolds as of its own accord, like the lotus bursting out above the water of the moon flashing suddenly behind a cloud.

It’s the Poverty, not the Test Scores
This striking infographic appeared in Yes! Magazine last year and was based on data from the Economic Policy Institute’s 2013 report – What Do International Tests Really Show About U.S. Student Performance. Though we decry low test scores and are currently concerned about whether a Liberal Arts or STEM focused education is the right trajectory, the affect of poverty on a student’s ability to do well, is dramatic. As the data shows, U.S. poverty statistics are much higher than other developed countries. When we normalize the data to reflect similar poverty levels in the U.S. as the better performing countries, then U.S. international test results go up dramatically. Until we tackle the poverty issue, we will continue to spend ever increasing dollars and time chasing elusive test scores.

The (re)-Discovery of the Human Energy Field
Thousands of years ago, the Chinese and the Indians discovered that there is an inherent energy field within and outside the human body. The Chinese call it Qi and the Indians call it Prana. Both went on to map out this field within the body and identified internal pathways for internal energy flow – Meridians for the Chinese and Nadis for the Indians. Both healing systems also identified energy points at strategic spots within the body that act as Energy Centers, perhaps feeding surrounding parts of the organism and major organs – Meridian Points in Chinese Medicine and Chakras in the Indian mind-body-spirit tradition. Each of these ancient civilizations built an understanding of these energy pathways and centers and then created healing modalities based on relieving human body symptoms and disease. Through trial and error they identified various natural treatments (herbs and other plant based solutions) that would remove the pain (what they considered an energy block) within a person’s body. Both the Chinese and Indians continue to use this ancient understanding of the human energy field to treat patients and proactively maintain good health. The Traditional Chinese Medicine approach with their medicinal remedies, dietary changes, acupuncture, and energy moving exercises (Tai-Chi and Qi-Gong) and the Indians with ayurvedic remedies, dietary changes, meditation, yoga and breath work.

But in Western countries, except for small segments of the population, we have lost sight of this understanding. We handed over the keys to materialist science which had no place for any type of interconnected field of any type. We were separate physical entities composed of material substances that were hardwired to each other. We began to treat our bodies as “biological structures with an intricate plumbing system”. If there was an issue we would deal with the offending part of the system and either medicated it or surgically altered or removed it. The concept that our internal hardware was connected in more than rudimentary ways was no longer considered. Nor was the concept that our “physical hardware” had software and an operating system that was running the overall system.
But then in the early 1900’s the discoveries of Quantum Physics began the process of awakening us up from our multi-millenium slumber. The world at the quantum, sub-atomic level is all energy. Which means we ourselves are Energy Beings. Energy in turn, converts to matter per Einstein’s famous equation E=MC². Our physical reality – our bodies, our material objects, and nature itself are underneath their physical manifestations, pure energy.
But close to 100 years later, we still ask – Is this true? How do we know for sure? And if it is true, what do we do differently in terms of achieving and maintaining optimum physical and mental health? Is there a hybrid approach of modern medicine and ancient wisdom that makes sense for us to adopt? And, just as importantly, what is the source of this energy?
Fortunately, scientists and technologists in the last 20 years have learned more and more that the human body is being regulated by Light Energy and Information. More specifically, that the 100 Million Cellular actions that happen in our body every second are being coordinated by a field of light energy that contains critical information for the cells to do their work in the various sub-systems of the body. Anything in your environment that interferes with this human energy field, causes sub-optimal to very harmful effects in your physical, emotional, and mental body systems. This emerging view, which some call the Human Biofield, is bringing us back to the understanding that the Chinese and Indians had thousands of years ago. And, in some cases as we’ll see later in the article, new learning is being developed that builds upon the ancient knowledge and takes it further. It’s been a long journey home but we are finally getting close.
Indian Chakra and Energy Body System
The Illuminated Body
So how do we know that the body is light-driven? There have been four major areas of clinical and scientific investigation in recent decades that are showing this to be the case: (1) Electric and Acoustic Based Photography of the the human Aura; (2) Measurement of Biophoton light and information transmission within the body; (3) Measurement of Heart generated Electrical Fields and Information transfer inside and outside the body and; (4) Acupuncture point, chakra, and meridian electrical energy and information communication measurements and mapping within the body along with techniques to remove energy field distortions.
On the photographic front, a good place to start is at The Centre for Biofield Sciences (CBS) in Pune, India.
The Centre for Biofield Sciences has been studying how to measure the Human Biofield since 1998. It’s aim is to map the human biofield and explore its significance in modern healthcare. In CBS’s own words, they point out that their research is about recognizing how the human body’s function creates electromagnetic fields which can then be measured:
The presumption of the existence of the “Aura”, is based upon the principle that all mental activity is electromagnetic. While some medical theorists argue that mental activity is chemical, because of the chemical neurotransmitters involved, the fact is that neurotransmitters are created only when electrical impulses induce a voltage in a neuron which exceeds its firing threshold. In addition, EEG (electroencephalogram) technology shows that mental activity can be effectively analyzed and monitored entirely by electromagnetic principles. In electrical engineering, it is an established principle that all electrical currents produce surrounding electromagnetic (EM) fields. Accordingly, our psychological and emotional activities are sent throughout the body as electrical impulses, radiating electromagnetic fields outside the body, which are characteristic of the mental activity that generated them. Indeed, even the mere movement of atoms will produce a quantifiable electromagnetic field. This is most clearly observed in the case of charged radioisotopes, but even neutral atoms and molecules will emit a field through valence motion of the charged substructure particles. As proven by Russian Tesla technology experiments in the 1950s, this phenomenon causes prokaryotic organisms to produce an external electromagnetic field, which consists of the combined EM emissions from millions of molecules in the biological body.
There are a few different photographic techniques in use at the CBS that allow us to see various “light-fields” or “auras” that encircle the body:
Polycontrast Interference Photography (PIP) – developed in the late 1980’s by Dr. Harry Oldfield. He developed a scanner which could provide a real time, moving image of the energy field. He believed that the future of analysis lay in finding an effective scanner which can ‘see’ imbalances in the energy field rather than disease in the physical body.
“Harry thought that the human energy field might possibly interfere with photons – ‘energy packets’ of light – or even what might be called ‘subtle energy photons’ in some way. He decided that ambient (surrounding) light would be interfered with by the field both when the incident ray travelled towards the object and when the reflected ray bounced off the object. In the main, the ‘object’ of his interest was human beings. He devised a computer programme which would analyse the different light intensities being reflected from the person or object being scanned. Harry says: “We believe that we are showing up an energy interaction with light, which is giving us an insight into the energy counter-part, the etheric template on which our physical molecules are strung. On average, every atom in the human body is replaced every seven to nine years. Think of your body not as a physical structure but as a moving fountain of molecules that are constantly being replaced. So what keeps them a coherent recognisable form? We believe it to be an organising template of energy. To see the body’s energy field with PIP, ideally the person is in a room with full spectrum lighting at a controlled output, standing against a white backdrop. The picture is taken with a digital video camera which acts like an artificial eye. A lead from the camera acts like an optic nerve connecting it to a computer which acts like an artificial brain. The program which runs the system is the artificial thinking process which makes sense of all the millions of bits of information. The computer screen then displays the end project of what the ‘brain’ has seen.
The PIP system shows up many patterns and colours which a trained eye can relate to a person’s energy balance and well being and although some of these things might be connected to health we emphasise that the system does not take the place of medical examination or diagnosis. Harry is often asked whether the colours seen with PIP are the actual colours of the aura? “Absolutely. Some clairvoyants and mystics with their gifts helped me develop some of the filters in PIP which simulate what they see. They naturally have eye and brain mechanisms that can pick up these subtle changes of light. When you’re looking at chakra colours on our visual equipment, you’re not just seeing one colour, you’re seeing a mixture of colours. But if a chakra is behaving itself perfectly, one colour will predominate – for instance the throat chakra has more of a blue hue when it is balanced than when its not. The same with the base chakra – it will be a dirty muddy brown if there are problems and red if it’s healthy. Also when red kundalini energy goes elsewhere, that is, goes into the wrong place at the wrong time, there is a potential danger. We are able to show this potential danger to people when they have a PIP scan.” – from Oldfield Systems
Here is a wonderful video of Harry Oldfield demonstrating images and video taken with the latest version of his PIP visioning system:
There are other techniques being used including Resonant Field Imaging (RFI) which was created by Matthew Green. The RFI technique scans the body at various points and registers the various frequencies it is picking up. It’s software algorithm then translates these frequencies into different colors which correspond to the bio-energetic health state of the body. And there is a sound based measurement system called the Electro Scanning Method (ESM) which was also created by Harry Oldfield. In this system, the the patient is pulsed with high frequency sound waves via electrode which results in resonant fields appearing around the body. A sound meter than takes measurements around various parts of the body. These measurements are then compared against the readings of a healthy individual. The reading points usually correspond to the locations of the traditional Indian Chakra points.
What these devices / techniques are showing is that there are energy fields in and around the human body that we can measure with modern day technologies. In some cases the field is picked up as electrical changes and in the case of the ESM, as sound frequency emanations (noting that sound is also a form of energy). Our bodies are electrical / energetic systems. These systems also show that they are picking up distinct energy field readings at the locations of the ancient Chakra and Meridian systems. Meaning that there are electrical energy centers and pathways in the human body. By reading the state of these energy fields, we can understand a person’s physical and mental health perhaps earlier than with conventional means and take proactive steps to enable healing.
But a natural question is what’s traveling through these energy systems (chakras and meridians) and where does it come from? It also raises the question, what comes first, the energy field which then influences the human body, or does the body come first and then emit an energy field as a result of its functioning? Or do they work concurrently? Further, how are the various energy centers connected? Can they be isolated and healed independently or are they interconnected in certain ways that a different approach is necessary? And, if our bodies are running on light energy and information, what would affect the quality of that energy flow? Could our thoughts, environment, food, chemicals, physical exercise, access to the sun…all affect the energetic flow within our human biofield?
First, lets take a look at the 2nd major movement forward of understanding the Human Biofield – Professor Fritz Popp and the field of Biophotonics.
Biophotons are weak photon emissions within biological systems. These emissions can be thought of as weak electromagnetic waves in the optical range of the spectrum – they are thus a form of light. Since the early 1930’s, scientists have known of the existence of biophotons in the cells of all living things including plants and humans.
German biophysicist Fritz-Albert Popp since 1974 has been a pioneer in the applied research of Biophotons and has gone on to show that they originate from DNA and also have a coherent laser like nature. Professor Popp has gone on to show that biophotons are at the heart of energy transmission and information coordination in and between cells within the body.
Popp’s work answers some of the previous questions that we asked – what is driving the energy / information network within the body:
This light emission is an expression of the functional state of the living organism and its measurement therefore can be used to assess this state. Cancer cells and healthy cells of the same type, for instance, can be discriminated by typical differences in biophoton emission. According to the biophoton theory developed on the base of these discoveries the biophoton light is stored in the cells of the organism – more precisely, in the DNA molecules of their nuclei – and a dynamic web of light constantly released and absorbed by the DNA may connect cell organelles, cells, tissues, and organs within the body and serve as the organism’s main communication network and as the principal regulating instance for all life processes. The processes of morphogenesis, growth, differentiation and regeneration are also explained by the structuring and regulating activity of the coherent biophoton field. The holographic biophoton field of the brain and the nervous system, and maybe even that of the whole organism, may also be basis of memory and other phenomena of consciousness, as postulated by neurophysiologist Karl Pribram an others. The consciousness-like coherence properties of the biophoton field are closely related to its base in the properties of the physical vacuum and indicate its possible role as an interface to the non-physical realms of mind, psyche and consciousness. The discovery of biophoton emission also lends scientific support to some unconventional methods of healing based on concepts of homeostasis (self-regulation of the organism), such as various somatic therapies, homeopathy and acupuncture. The “ch’i” energy flowing in our bodies’ energy channels (meridians) which according to Traditional Chinese Medicine regulates our body functions may be related to node lines of the organism’s biophoton field. The “prana” of Indian Yoga physiology may be a similar regulating energy force that has a basis in weak, coherent electromagnetic biofields. – from the Health Angel Network
In February 2006, using a Somatoscope (a darkfield microscope with a magnification of 30,000 times) scientists were able to observe the inside structure of biophotons in various drops of water
Here is an interview with Dr. Popp on why Biophotons are highly coherent information transmitters within the body:
Professor Popp’s work shows that we are indeed “Light Bodies”. Moreover, his research suggests that if the body is being regulated by Light, then we can affect healing by using external “light” sources to help correct light deficiencies in the internal biophoton network.
The Third Major movement forward to re-discover the Human Biofield takes place at the HeartMath Institute. There they have discovered that as the Indians and Chinese stated all along, it is the heart that is the real “brains” of the human body system.
The HeartMath Institute has been investigating the role of the heart on human health since (1991). Their clinical results have shown that when the heart is in “coherence” – that its rhythms are smooth and consistent – it dramatically affects the overall functioning of the human body in many ways:
Over the years we have experimented with different psychological and physiological measures, but it was consistently heart rate variability, or heart rhythms, that stood out as the most dynamic and reflective of inner emotional states and stress. More intriguing are the dramatic positive changes that occur when techniques are applied that increase coherence in rhythmic patterns of heart rate variability. These include shifts in perception and the ability to reduce stress and deal more effectively with difficult situations. We observed that the heart was acting as though it had a mind of its own and was profoundly influencing the way we perceive and respond to the world. In essence, it appeared that the heart was affecting intelligence and awareness. Our research and that of others indicate that the heart is far more than a simple pump. The heart is, in fact, a highly complex, self-organized information processing center with its own functional “brain” that communicates with and influences the cranial brain via the nervous system, hormonal system and other pathways. These influences profoundly affect brain function and most of the body’s major organs, and ultimately determine the quality of life.
As was mentioned earlier in this article, the Indians and Chinese long ago identified the heart as the master of the human biofield within their Meridian and Chakra based systems. Thousands of years later, the HeartMath Institute is now showing us through their clinical studies that this is in fact true. The Institute of Noetic Sciences has done similar investigations into the heart energy field and this one-minute video makes it clear how the heart’s role in driving the Human Biofield:
You may be wondering, how do we know that the Heart has its own Brain and in fact that it is driving more direction to the brain than the other way around. The details are found in going back to research done in the early 1990’s in the emerging field of neuro-cardiology:
After extensive research, one of the early pioneers in neurocardiology, Dr. J. Andrew Armour, introduced the concept of a functional “heart brain” in 1991. His work revealed that the heart has a complex intrinsic nervous system that is sufficiently sophisticated to qualify as a “little brain” in its own right. The heart’s brain is an intricate network of several types of neu- rons, neurotransmitters, proteins and support cells like those found in the brain proper. Its elaborate circuitry enables it to act independently of the cranial brain – to learn, remember, and even feel and sense. The heart’s nervous system contains around 40,000 neurons, called sensory neurites, which detect circulating hormones and neurochemicals and sense heart rate and pressure information. Hormonal, chemical, rate and pressure information is translated into neurological impulses by the heart’s nervous system and sent from the heart to the brain through several afferent (flowing to the brain) pathways. It is also through these nerve pathways that pain signals and other feeling sensations are sent to the brain. These afferent nerve pathways enter the brain in an area called the medulla, located in the brain stem. The signals have a regulatory role over many of the autonomic nervous system signals that flow out of the brain to the heart, blood vessels and other glands and organs. However, they also cascade up into the higher centers of the brain, where they may influence perception, decision making and other cognitive processes. – from Science of the Heart, Heart-Math Institute
Here are some additional bits of information from HMI on how the heart is functioning within the Human Biofield:
If our hearts are generating electromagnetic fields and communicating within our bodies, then they are also communicating through those same fields outside the body with other people. We are all highly interconnected. The Heart Math Institute’s Research shows that the heart is an access point for spiritual intelligence and that as people increase their heart coherence through positive emotions such as love, compassion, and gratitude, that their heart-field grows stronger and thereby they access greater amounts of intuitive information. They explain more in this video:

The fourth major move forward is a beautiful culmination of the principles of Quantum Physics and Biology, Traditional Chinese and Indian Energy Medicine, Biophotonics, and a novel method to imprint energy healing information on to “neutraceuticals” to help the body regain its proper energy and information conductivity. This major step forward in understanding the Human Biofield is from two decades of work by Peter H. Fraser who later partnered with Harry Massey to form the company NES Health to commercialize their findings.
If you’ve ever watched Star Trek then you’ve seen the ship’s doctor, Dr. “Bones” McCoy, analyze a patient’s health with a hand-held scanner to determine exactly what is wrong with them. After the diagnosis, he then injects them with some type of liquid to allow their body to regain full function. Well, the future may have arrived sooner than anticipated through the work of Peter Fraser and Harry Massey. They explain the details of their research and technology in their book, Decoding the Human Body-Field:
Throughout your body, there are trillions of chemical processes that form a tangled web of interconnections to make the enzymes, proteins, hormones, and other substances that your body needs to work properly. All of the processes must be exquisitely timed, and these substances must be produced in specific quantities and delivered with precision to the correct cells. It seems only reasonable to assume that this intricate biological dance must be choregraphed by something. That something is information.
The NES team have focused on the observation that water is the key information conduit within the human body and Fraser’s background as an accupuncturist and homeopath, showed him that water can be imprinted with information, it has memory:
The latest research shows that DNA and genes can carry out their function only the help of water. As Felix Franks, of the University of Cambridge said in a New Scientist article, ”The Quantum Exlir”, “Without water it is all chemistry, but add water and you get biology. Homeopathic remedies are made from substances, such as minerals or plants, that are placed in a solution, usually mostly water, which is the success (vigorously shaken). The solution is the diluted further and the procedure repeated, often until not a single molecule of the original substances remains in the remedy. All that remains is information. In effect, the remedy retains a memory of information about he healing substance the body can recognize and use.
Fraser’s work over twenty years was driven by his own Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. In order to treat it, he decided to analyze his own acupuncture points and see if he could understand how to measure energy levels at the various meridian points and chakras and see if there were substances that would increase energy specifically at those locations. The main idea being that if he could resolve the energy level at a certain troublesome point(s) in the body, then that would “unclog” the overall natural energy flow or Qi throughout his whole body and restore him to proper health. He first tried with plants:
He had devised a way to test plants for their “energetic signatures” by using an electrodermal-type testing machine, which is an electronic machine that is said to detect the distinct energy of a substance. Traditionally electrodermal machines have been used to detect changes in electrical resistance at the acupuncture points on skin, indicating where there may be a blockage. However, you also can use such a machine to detect whether there is an energetic imprint in one sample that is similar to – or sets up a like-like response to – a different substance.
Thus Fraser with trial and error of thousands of plants and other substances was able to test if there was an energetic response between various substances and his own skin / blood. In other words, was there an energetic match where a substance “talked to” his own blood or saliva samples. He eventually found some that matched up well. But Fraser took this energy matching even further, he wanted to map out the complete chinese acupuncture meridian system to fully understand how the body was communicating energetically within itself.
Fraser acquired “ampoules, which contained the homeopathic, or energetic signatures of just about everything of importance in the body. He had ampoules representing nearly two hundred different kinds of cells and various kinds of tissues, form skin to gut to brain samples, and blood, enzymes, hormones, and the like. He had amassed droves of minerals and elements from calcium to potassium and he had the samples of environmental chemical sand toxins. He then attempted to match energetic aspects the contents of each ampoule to various acupuncture points on the body, using himself as the guinea pig.
In traditional chinese medicine, there are twelve main meridians and 365 acupuncture points along those meridians.
Peter explored the meridians by doggedly testing the contents of thousands of ampoules against the acupucture points for energetic matches. A match suggested that the substance in the test ampoule was important to the proper functioning of the meridian or to the organs and body processes correlated to that meridian. A match meant there was an energy connection, a communication between the two. “
By looking at these matches, Peter Fraser was able to map out what parts of the body were connected to and communicated more strongly to other parts. Some of his observations confirmed chinese medicine beliefs built up over thousands of years and some paved new ground:
Chinese medicine views the heart meridian as the master connector, holding all the energies of the body together and linking them to the brain. Peter found that was the case…but according to his test, the only part of the brain the heart talked to was the mid brain…the mid brain controls many of the regulatory functions of the body such as blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and body temperature. He also found that the meridians connect strongly to connective tissue, which forms a massive network in our bodies. It is a web of tough, fibrous fascia and branching tissue that serves as a soft framework for the body, reaching every cell in the body.”
So essentially, Fraser has been able to show how the ancient chinese meridian system is in fact working within the body and is connecting to every cell – thus providing an electrical grid for the body to deliver energetic information for its complete functioning. Here is a video giving an explanation of the NES Health System and some of the science behind their technologies:
The research work at NES is break taking and cannot be adequately conveyed in a short article. I would highly recommend reading the book – Decoding the Human Body Field. Through their efforts, NES is converging on much of what has been postulated by ancient wisdom teachings along with theories more recently generated by Quantum Physics and Biology. I will write much more about them in the coming months. In the mean time, here is a concise list of their ten key principles from the Fraser / Massey book, Decoding the Human Biofield, which illustrates their work and findings:
The universe is an interconnected network of information and energy. The human body is part of this web of relationships (via feedback loops), and our health is dependent upon the body’s correct processing of this information and energy.
Although genetics and cellular chemistry are important facets of how the human body works, there is a deeper reality to the body, one in which physics, especially the field of quantum electrodynamics, governs physiology. The interaction of quantum waves imparts energy and information that is encoded in what NES calls the human body-field, which serves as a holographic template for the physical body.
Information is directed in the body via many kinds of energy, including electromagnetic and vibrational (as phonons, the quantum aspect of sound) energies, and via frequency and phase relationships.
As an embryo develops the organs create Energetic Driver fields, which impart constitutional energy and information to the body-field and hence to the body.
There are at least twelve Energetic Integrator fields, which form a comprehensive communication network in the body field that directs information to the right place in the body at the right time so that body functions correctly.
Energetic terrains are energetic disturbances in specific body tissues that creative environments hospitable to microorganisms, such as viruses and bacteria, both real and virtual (the microorganism’s energy field, rather than the actual microorganism). They can be highly disruptive to the body field.
Symptoms of illness, whether physical or emotional, arise first not in the physical body, but as distortions or blocks in the underlying energy and information of the human body-field.
It is possible to analyze the holographic human body-field to determine if their are distortions in or blocks to the flow of energy and information that affect the state of our health.
Substances and liquids can be encoded or imprinted with information to influence the energetic state of the body field, and hence the physical body. The NES Infoceuticals are create according to this principle.
Correcting the distortions in the human body-field can help return the body to homeostasis, which refers to the body’s ability to maintain equilibrium, a process that is dependent on the body’s own self-healing intelligence.

Conclusion
Hopefully you’ll agree that the scientific and technical progress being made in recent decades to identify the Human Energy Field, if understood more broadly, would revolutionize every facet of our existence. We are closing in on a tipping point of understanding ourselves as Energy Beings whose own bodies are highly regulated by Light and Information through energetic fields and that those fields also interconnect us to everyone and everything on the planet (and beyond). When this tipping point occurs, how we view our health, our communication and relationships to others and the planet, and our connection to a divine Source Energy which is the fuel for all of the Energy Fields we are discovering, would strongly propel humanity to its next stage of evolution.

The Core Principles of the New Spiritualist
Dutch spiritual writer Lisette Thooft wrote an outstanding article in the May / June 2013 edition of a The Intelligent Optimist magazine in which she succinctly summed up the core principles of the New Spiritualist movement. This grouping is often identified with the phrase “Spiritual but not Religious”. The basis of the article is that an increasing number of people over the last 30 years have moved beyond organized religion into a realm where they believe that there is “something” beyond our ordinary reality. This “something” points to a more inward and direct connection with the divine:
Some say we have reached the end of the “grand narrative”: Not only is Christianity passe, but the meta-stories that tell us science or socialism will bring ultimate salvation have also failed to pan out. In the meantime, a new grand narrative is being created: a hopeful and uplifting story, one more and more people are starting to believe and from which we can derive inspiration and vitality. This is the narrative of the new spirituality. Our era is perhaps comparable to the first centuries of Christianity. A kind of fragmentation is underway, and a new spiritual paradigm is arising. Right now, things seem confusing and kaleidoscopic, without a core, without a leader. But those who look carefully will discover a common thread. The new grand narrative presents itself as a quest, upon which each of us individually embarks…If we take a closer look, we see that is new meta-story is anything but noncommittal: It make a strong moral appeal to our sense of personal responsibility.
With this as a foundation, Ms. Thooft outlines 7 core principles of the New Spiritualist Narrative.
1. All Religions tell the Same Story
First and foremost is the conviction that all religious traditions have a universal core. Their external trappings differ, their rituals differ, their commandments can even be diametrically opposed, the core belief is the same.
At their core all religions are trying to make it clear that there is a divine link to humanity. Where things get tripped up is when man inserts his own distorted view of reality in between the divine and other humans. Therefore, the human ego’s need to control and direct gets in the way of true understanding.
2. God Resides Within Us
God lives inside man. There is something sacred hidden in our deepest selves. In theosophy, that is the higher self; in anthrosophy, it’s the Christ within; in gnosticism, the divine spark; in Buddhism, the Buddha nature, in the human potential movement, the inner child – but whatever the term, they all point to the same thing: that which links us to the divine.
If the divinity lives within us, then we don’t need a middle man, we can make a direct connection as the divine itself is looking to experience life through us. The more we open ourselves up to that internal divine presence, to listen to our intuition and higher self, the more strongly we connect to divine source energy.
3. Only as an Individual Can We Find Harmony with Others
Because God lives within us and not in the church, the new spirituality is by definition an individual affair. We all make our own pilgrim’s journey to our own inner world. Because we are unique individuals that journey is different for each of us. We can travel a while along the path of a particular school, guru or teacher, but we are always free to develop our own variant on their teachings.
All the various new spirituality schools and teachers are providing guidance on how the individual him or herself can make the divine connection. They come in different flavors but they aim to do the same thing – to empower the individual to gain direct connection and guidance on what their personal purpose is in this life time. Each person is here to learn something different. For sure there are some common “truths” in terms of how best to live in society and what constitutes good and bad Karma as an example, but aside from those, each individual has different things to experience and learn based on their current level of consciousness. As individuals awaken to the divine core within them, they are able to achieve a new level of individual harmony, rising consciousness, and thus better able to harmonize with others.
4. Live in your Body, Not in Your Head
Because all feelings (fear, frustration, traumatic experience) are physical processes inside the body, the new spirituality is deeply involved with the physical experience, on and within one’s own body. “Navel-gazing” critics call it, and that’s exactly with it is: It’s about what you feel in your own gut. Most people start living in their heads at a young age: The way we raise and educate our chidren lends itself to that. For many people, there comes a moment, often through illness or overexertion, then they realize it: I’m in my head too much; I’ve lost the connection with my body, my heart, my feelings, my whole being, my ‘me’. They attend therapy or start mediating an rediscover their bodies. Body work is an important component of the new spirituality.
Every year more people are experiencing the benefits of meditation, yoga, and mindfulness practices. These Eastern origin tools have been around for thousands of years but especially in the West, we have so strongly moved in the direction of logic and intellect that we’ve forgotten that the body and mind are highly inter-connected.
For a deeper look into how to make a stronger connection between Mind and Body see – In Touch: How to Tune in to the Inner Guidance of Your Body and Trust Yourself by John Prendergast
5. We Must let the Ego Die
Ultimately we must experience “ego death”. We must transcend ourselves. Then we are our true selves; without masks, without survival mechanisms, without armor.
I actually believe that we don’t necessarily want the Ego to die but we want it to revert back to its rightful place as a servant of the Soul. The Ego’s original role was to protect us in terms of bodily harm while our soul incarnates in each life time to experience material reality. The Soul in this arrangement is directly connected to Source energy and receives guidance which the Ego can then translate into action in the material world. What’s happened in recent human history is that the Ego has completely taken over and cut itself off from the Soul and Divine Source. With the Ego fully in charge, we risk becoming entangled in its fear based approach to living and need for separation from others. When we reconnect to Divine Source, we can then make the Ego smaller and softer and put it into its rightful role of service to our Divine Intent.
Read an excellent post by Brandon West (a great example of a New Spiritualist) of Project Global Awakening on the subject – I Surrender to the Infinite that is within Me.
6. Humanity Evolves through Our Individual Development
Each person is traveling toward a complete union with the Source or God in a long series of lives that enable us to keep learning. Everything that happens in our lives can be used for spiritual development, even (or particularly) setbacks, illnesses, poverty, lack of recognition, loneliness and so on. None of it is an accident; it falls to us because we need, or are able, to use it at that moment. The people we have a problem with are mirrors in which we can see our own shadows, our doppelgängers.
The world around us is our personal mirror. We create the reality we experience with our thoughts and emotions. Everything that arises in our life is meant to teach us how to attain the ultimate lesson of this school called Earth – that we are all connected and the same, from the same Divine Source, and that learning to unconditionally love everyone and everything is our one and only goal. If we create everything in our reality with the intent of love, compassion, and a deep understanding of interconnectedness of all existence, then we are headed in the right direction. We come back life time after life time in an attempt to fully learn this one lesson. All our various lives, in various roles and their associated experiences are meant to show us what we think “the other” really is – it is ourselves, just wearing a different disguise. All our lives are provided for us to awaken at the deepest level to the reality that everything in our world is the same one thing – Divine Consciousness. We are Mini-Gods in training.
7. Everything is Connected
Everyone is traveling to God, and everyone is part of the whole, because – and this is perhaps the most comforting and uplifting thing – everything is connected to everything else. The entire universe is a single, infinite web of vibrating connections between everything and everyone. Science is well on its way to discovering this: Everything is immediately connected to everything else. That’s why everything that happens is seen, is known, in the farthest corners of the universe. Theosophists and anthrosophists call it the akashic records. And that seeing – that cosmic involvement, that omniscient and omnipresent intelligence that wishes us well – is God’s love.
For a deeper overview of our inherent interconnectedness, read my previous post series – Seeing the Oneness of our Reality
Ms. Thoost wraps up her article with a concise and striking metaphor of our human journey over many millennia to our current point:
These are the major hallmarks of the new spirituality. Many people today are talking about humanity’s U-shaped development. We originate at the top left corner of the “U” where primitive man had completely intuitive and natural contact with the spiritual world. Over the millennia, we descended to ground, to the materialistic world view currently in vogue, at the bottom of the U. Today’s world view is materialistic through and through. The existence of everything beyond man is denied. And even man is made smaller than he is, for he no longer has a Soul or Spirit. According to Science, we are an incidental mix of genes, hormones and other substances in the brain that determine our behavior. We are our brains. But many of us are already climbing up the right leg of the “U”, Upward, toward un-impeded contact with the Spiritual World – but bringing with us all the experience, knowledge, and awareness we’ve gathered along the way. When we arrive, we will no longer be babies but adults, with a free will and the associated responsibility for creation, for the cosmos. We’re not there, by any stretch of the imagination – but we’re all on our way.
Amen.

The Shortcomings of Religion and the Coming Revolution, by Roberto Unger (article plus video). “For over 200 years the world has been set on fire by a revolutionary message. The message is that every individual human being is divine. That all of us despite the constraints and humiliations that surround us can share in a greater life and share even in the attributes that we ascribe to God.” And with this as his starting point, Roberto Unger embarks on an exploration of the processes by which social change and spiritual rebirth could beget a living actualization of individual human divinity. The title of Unger’s new book, The Religion of the Future, refers to the theoretical product of a modern spiritual revolution. The goal of this revolution would be to promote a greater life for the ordinary individual. The means by which this revolution would be achieved depends entirely on the important relationship between personal conduct and the structures of society. BigThink.com

Inequality – The Choices We’ve Made – A Concise Timeline
Most of us recognize that Inequality is a growing problem and last year Thomas Piketty in his book, Capital in the Twenty-First Century, gave a data driven economic analysis on the self-feeding implications of capital concentration in the hands of the few. But to get a better understanding of the various political decisions that have lead to the current situation, Yes! Magazine created a stunning visual timeline of Hedrick Smith’s analysis from his book - Who Stole the American Dream?. Putting Piketty’s work together with Smith’s fleshes out the Systems Thinking analysis of the drivers and outputs of the current inequality problem.
Here is Hedrick Smith speaking in a 20 minute video presentation about his book – Who Stole the American Dream?

“Stop Stealing Dreams” – A Systems Thinking Approach to Our Current Educational System
In April of 2014, author and entrepreneur Seth Godin, wrote a very profound and insightful manifesto on the state of our current K-12 educational system – Stop Stealing Dreams. If you have school age children, you will have probably noticed the same issues that Mr. Godin speaks of. The acute problem is that the continuing test-driven, information memorization educational model no longer makes sense in a period when robotics and the internet make rote memorization less important. What is more important is making connections across different functional domains, how to access the necessary information dynamically as needed, understanding how to create new ideas and solutions, and having the skills to proactively learn new things and upgrade your capability on a lifelong basis.
“We spend a fortune teaching trigonometry to kids who don’t understand it, won’t use it, and will spend no more of their lives studying math. We invest thousands of hours exposing millions of students to fiction and literature, but end up training most of them to never again read for fun (one study found that 58 percent of all Americans never read for pleasure after they graduate from school). As soon as we associate reading a book with taking a test, we’ve missed the point. Even though the workplace and civil society demand variety, the industrialized school system works to stamp it out. The industrialized mass nature of school goes back to the very beginning, to the common school and the normal school and the idea of universal schooling. All of which were invented at precisely the same time we were perfecting mass production and interchangeable parts and then mass marketing. We continually raise the bar on what it means to be a college professor, but churn out Ph.D.s who don’t actually teach and aren’t particularly productive at research, either. We teach facts, but the amount of knowledge truly absorbed is miniscule.”
The focus of programs such as No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top fail at Systems Thinking. Saying that the main reason children don’t produce good test results is because test and teaching standards are not high enough fails to understand the myriad systemic linkages in that child’s life. We can look at many of the connections through a simple Mind Map:
This may not be a complete and thorough list but I think if we were to look at the children around us who are succeeding at a high level in school, we would check off most of these boxes for each child. Unless we change societal structural issues that allow more children to achieve these success factors in their lives, we will continue to be disappointed in the declining test results of American children as a whole. The countries around the world that are doing better in the student success area, have figured out ways to create societal programs and cultural norms that support and embrace much larger proportions of their population. Just implementing one of the factors above – implementing universal and free access to 0-5 Early Childhood Education (ECE) for all children, as an example, would dramatically alter the educational performance of children. Test results show that children who have had access to ECE far outperform other children, especially when it comes to being able to read well at the right age. This is important because if children are not reading adequately by 3rd grade, from then on they steadily fall behind their peers. The phrase often used is that up till 3rd grade, children are learning to read, and after 3rd grade, they are reading to learn. If kids can’t adequately read by 3rd grade, they can’t learn what we want them to, no matter how rigorous the curriculum, teaching, and testing. Moreover, this falling back by these students ends up costing dearly in terms of remedial training, lost class room time, and impact to other students who are further along. Some school districts are in fact finding that they should fund ECE themselves for their students because it is ultimately cheaper down the road.
That’s just one Student Success Factor, imagine if we took a look at each one of them and then started to see how they interact. That’s the level of Systems Thinking that the K-12 educational issue needs in order to be truly remedied.
To my mind this is one of the most important societal issues we face. The Godin Manifesto is essential reading (and worth sharing with friends, teachers, and school administrators). And, for more background on the benefits of Early Childhood Education, see this brief from Harvard University on The Science behind Early Childhood Education.
