Big, sexy men who don’t relate well to kids need not apply…

Kezia Murphy plays her widow card well. When you don’t trust people not to let you down, it’s easier to not get involved—and getting involved with a man who makes her skin sizzle just by looking at him would be una pazzia—crazy! Four years ago while Kezia’s daughter, Zoe, battled leukaemia, a tragic accident stole her husband’s life. Starting over in the little town of Oban where she’s adopted into the close knit community on Stewart Island, Kezia and her daughter are all the family the other needs. Except Zoe yearns for more.

New Zealand’s worst candidate for instant fatherhood…

Ben doesn’t do gooey emotional stuff.  He doesn’t do cosy home and family. And he sure isn’t the big teddy-bear Kezia Murphy, the woman he secretly fantasises about, thinks he is. So when Jade, his surprise eight-year-old daughter arrives on his doorstep, he’s a D-minus student struggling to pass a crash-course in parenting.

They’ll either melt or raze their lives to the ground…

When the sparks of attraction between Kezia and Ben fan into an inferno, Ben doesn’t know how much longer the layers of resistance around his heart can resist melting into the gooey mess he fears. The more he fights it the harder it is to make the choice that will destroy the family he now longs to claim.

Kezia swayed toward him, his gravity too strong to resist. His fingers still stroked her knuckles, distracting her from the close bulk of his body.

“How do you see me now?” she asked.

If his legs weren’t in her way, she would’ve kicked herself for the breathy, flirty words falling from her mouth. Her toes curled inside her slippers. She wasn’t a flirt—well, she hadn’t been a flirt for many, many years. Had assumed she’d forgotten how in the midst of rebuilding her and Zoe’s lives.

“As a woman. A beautiful woman.” His low voice twined around her, as rich and luxurious as the most expensive silk.

“You shouldn’t. You have to stop.” She tugged her hand from the sweet torture of his fingers and pushed against his chest. His broad, muscled, warm-to-the-touch chest.

Big mistake.

Fine lines around his eyes crinkled. “What I’ve seen can’t be unseen.”

Kezia’s gaze dropped to his lips, outlined with the dark growth of five o’clock shadow. Soft and rough and oh-so-bad for her. “Ben—”

He dipped his head, and like a flicked switch, her eyelids slipped down and her lips parted. If her mind had forgotten those exquisite moments before a kiss, her body hadn’t. Breathless anticipation squeezed low in her belly at Ben’s salty, smoky scent. His soft breath feathered her skin. One large, calloused hand covered her fingers, which clutched fistfuls of his tee shirt.

“Easy.” He followed the word with the pressure of his lips to hers, the impact of his touch like a zap of static electricity.

Her eyes popped open, a shiver skating down her spine. Ben stared, his eyes narrowed, lashes masking his expression. Had he felt the spark of intense connection too? Or was it the overactive imagination of a woman who hadn’t had sex in almost half a decade? Sexually frustrated widow over-reacts to a simple kiss. Like a newspaper headline running through her mind. Mortifying.

Kezia half turned to watch her go, her dark curls spilling over the shoulders of her red blouse. The silky material stopped just short of the curve of her hips, pointing like an arrow to her shapely little ass. An ass that, no matter how many cool showers he endured, held a reoccurring role in his dreams. The fiery color suited her dark hair and olive skin. If he touched her now, would she burn as hot?

Really. Bad. Idea.

He dug his hands deeper into his pockets. “Holly got sick, and I tried to ring, but—”

“It’s fine. Jade keeps Zoe entertained too, so it’s win-win.”

“Thanks, I owe you one.”

“I guess you do.” She paused. “There’s something you could do for me.”

Though he needed her help, he couldn’t resist the opportunity to tease. “Does it involve a leather riding crop and you dressed only in stilettos?”

Her serious expression dissolved. “In your dreams, big guy.”

He waited for the tell-tale blush to warm her cheeks. Nothing. She smiled at him with the same patronizing smile she gave every other man who came on to her—and he’d seen a few crash and burn since Kezia arrived in Oban.

Huh. She thought they could return to polite acquaintances. After that kiss? The one that kept him awake at night?

Not gonna happen. Game on.

He imagined everything he wanted to do to her, with her, before he spoke. Hoped the echo of those thoughts would filter through his tone. “So…what can I do for you?”

A sudden stiffening of her spine shouted, “Message received, loud and clear.”

She met his gaze, serene and cool as a marble statue. “I want Jade to go the Easter gala on Monday. Zoe’s told Jade all about it.”

Not the request he’d hoped for. “I’ve already arranged for her to go. Mum and Piper are taking her.”

“I think you should take her. It’d be good for her to see you loosen up a little.”

“I’m loose.” He shrugged to demonstrate his laid-back-ness.

Kezia rolled her eyes. “Not with Jade, you aren’t. You edge around her like you’ve got that riding crop stuck up your butt.”

Goddamn—sparring with this woman was the best fun he’d had in months. “Why Kezia, I thought you were a good Catholic girl…yet you’re thinking about my butt.”

That shocked a full-out belly laugh from her. “It’s been a long time since I’ve been a good Catholic girl, and don’t change the subject—you and Jade need to relax and have fun.”

“Oh, I know how to have fun.” He closed the gap between them and braced a palm against the door jamb.

She sniffed and arched a brow. “I mean fun that doesn’t involve the kinds of things men like you think is fun.”

“Beer, sports, and sex?”

“Precisely.” She placed one small palm on his chest and shoved him out of her doorway. “Now stop flirting, and go swim with the sharks.”

She shut the door in his face.

The brief warmth of her hand against his tee shirt sizzled through his skin and he grinned at the closed door. “Yes, Mistress Murphy.”

Melting Into You Teaser Excerpt Week 2

Melting Into You (Due South Book 2)

Released June 16th, 2014.

In this excerpt, Kezia is pumped for information about ‘the kiss’ from one of her besties, Shaye, who, awk-ward, happens to be Ben’s younger sister.

Shaye’s eyes bugged open. “Holy guacamole—what kind of kiss are we talking?”

“The regular kind.” Kezia’s cheeks warmed, and she took another long swallow of wine.

“Regular, as in a quick peck on the cheek to say thanks for a nice day out?”

“Not exactly.”

“Were tongues involved?”

“Shaye!” Now her face was hot enough to sauté on.

Shaye laughed so hard she snorted tea down the front of her shirt. “Seriously, Kez? You haven’t been near a guy since you arrived in Oban—and from what you’ve told me, you haven’t been near any men since Callum died—so a kiss is a big deal. And as an almost re-virgin-ised twenty-four-year-old, let me sigh wistfully over this one regular kiss, okay?”

“Re-virgin-ised? That’s not a word.”

“Evasion, Ms. School Teacher. C’mon, tell me. Rapido, rapido!”

“It was on the lips.” Kezia’s voice sounded prim and snooty in her ears; it’d been sooo long since she’d been in the conversational hot seat involving a man. “I’m not talking about tongues or any other body parts with you. It was a nice kiss.”

“Ah-ha! That’s how the cheese sauce got burned. You guys got so into a smoking-hot kiss—”

“No, no. The sauce burned later.”

“Completely missing the point, Kez! Stop torturing me. Now”—Shaye jabbed a finger at her—“did your heart beat faster?”

“Oh, good Lord.” Kezia face-palmed, wishing for a way to escape Shaye’s merciless guerrilla warfare.

“Just answer the question, sister.”

“Yes. My heart beat faster.”

“Did your toes curl?”

“Yes. Inside my Donkey slippers, there may have been some toe curling.”

Shaye sat up straight. “A guy gives you a heart-beating, toe-curling kiss and you’re wearing your old Donkey slippers? Kez, what were you thinking?”

Kezia shrugged. She hadn’t been thinking about her choice in footwear, that was for sure.

“Anyway,” Shaye continued. “Was he a good kisser? Please tell me he wasn’t like my last date, who whipped his tongue around my mouth as if he were beating cream?”

Kezia forced her mind to remain blank. If her thoughts slid back to the kiss, she might embarrass herself more—by gushing like a teenager. “No, nothing like that. He’s a good kisser.”

“On a scale of one to ten, pick a number.”

“You’re relentless, aren’t you?”

Shaye just grinned.

“Six,” she said.

“Knowing how unforthcoming you’ve been so far, I’m calling it as an eight.”

“Seven point five, max.”

Shaye twirled her ponytail around a finger. “Not too shabby—though plenty of room for improvement next time.”

Momentarily caught up in the teasing banter, Kezia froze, her stomach plummeting. “There won’t be a next time.”

Melting Into You (Due South Book 2)

Released June 16th, 2014.

He didn’t need or want a woman picking up after him. Ben slid off the barstool and walked into the kitchen, angling behind Kezia at the sink and tugging the bowl from her fingers. Her arm, bare to the elbow since she’d rolled up her long-sleeved top, brushed his. She stepped sideways out of his way and he sucked in a breath, praying he wouldn’t swallow his lustful drool the wrong way and end up coughing up a lung.

“She was happy watching TV.”

“Happy, and you didn’t have to interact with her, correct?” Kezia edged into the family room and perched on a couch arm.

“Hey, I interacted with her today. I took her to meet West’s parents—who also think she’s the Second Coming—and I bought her an ice-cream at the store.”

“Did you play any games with her?”

“Games?” He finished rinsing his bowl and left it to drain.

“You know, like Scrabble or backgammon—that sort of thing?”

Did he look like the type of guy to have a host of board games tucked away in a cupboard? Don’t piss her off Ben, play nice.

“Ah, no. I’m a bit low-stocked on board games.”

“Hmmph. You should take her over to the city and buy a few, they’re good ice-breakers. Playing a board game means you can spend time with Jade without much talking—if talking’s hard for you.”

Of course talking was hard. He had nothing in common with an eight-year-old girl. “Sounds like a plan.”

He wiped down the counter. Surely five minutes was long enough for Jade to fall asleep?

“Can I get you something? Tea? Coffee?”

“Instant noodles?” Kezia’s dark eyes twinkled.

“Food of the Gods,” he said.

She snorted and snagged her jacket off the sofa. “Thanks, but I’d better go. Zoe wasn’t amused at being left at home with Shaye and missing our girl-time.”

“I appreciate you dropping everything to come by, Kezia. Name your price.”

She paused, one arm in the jacket, the pull of the leather across her shoulders emphasizing the thrust of her breasts beneath the soft knit of her jersey. “My price is you stop being such a stronzo.”

“Do I want to know the translation?”

She pulled her jacket on the rest of the way. “I’ll give you a clue. It starts with ass and ends with hole.”

He bit back a grin. “I’ll try not to be such a stronzo.”

Kezia’s lips lifted into a small smile. “Try harder.”

He moved like a much smaller, lighter man. A runner or a gymnast—all coiled power that could switch from casual swagger to lightning-fast action in a heartbeat.

She licked dry lips as he stalked closer, a witty response swallowed by the slow burn kindling low in her body. Both English and Italian deserted her, and she simply drank him in. Too good-looking, too confident—too much of everything that eroded her determination to resist him.

Bracing her spine as he stood alongside her, she waited for the punch line or another double entendre.

But he said nothing.

Just gazed down with a small half smile. Which was another word for a smirk—a baby, you know you’re impressed smirk.

She fanned herself with the edge of the board. Did she need a reminder of why she hated Alpha males? After growing up in a home full of five bull-headed Alpha brothers, no, she did not.

Ben’s arm brushed hers as he moved to let Noah past. Beneath her summery dress, her nipples puckered against her lacy bra cup.

Oh, no! Not again.

Kezia hugged the clipboard to her chest and closed her eyes. Please St. Paula, let the clipboard base be wide enough to cover my boobs.

A soft, rumbling sound next to her—Ben chuckling.

Sweet Mother! Had she spoken aloud? A quick glance confirmed her worst fears unfounded. Ben stared blandly into the crowd, as if he had no idea how much his closeness affected her.

Honestly, she should ask the Patron Saint of Widows for more than boob coverage. She needed strength—brute strength—to resist either the urge to murder the man, or the almost-as-terrifying urge to jump his bones until he begged for mercy.

On Teenagers & Tattoos

I have a boy teenager (age 17) and a girl teenager (age 13) and I have a confession to make. I’ve never written a teenage character into my books.

Here’s why:

1. Male teenagers grunt. A lot. This makes a pretty uninteresting conversation when written down.

2. Female teenagers talk. A lot. Also hard to capture on paper. Plus, they’re usually talking ‘a lot’ to their friends, not to adults.

3. The hero and/or heroine in my books would not look good sitting in a prison cell after throttling said teenage character. Personally, after yet another grunt or eyeroll from one of my beloved kids, I can identify with the urge.

Take a recent shopping trip I experienced with Master 17. He needed school shoes, so I dutifully accompanied him into the store, because apparently, the act of selecting his own shoes is just that much easier with Mum there. While Mum hunts for the right color/size/style he can then take care of more pressing issues, such as texting his mates. Once we’d found the shoes, we were served but a lovely, but highly inked/body-pierced young lady.

Out of the shop, I casually lunged for a ‘teachable moment,’ and to show Master 17 how cool I was.

Me: So. You ever gonna get tattoos like that?

Master 17: *grunt*

Me: Must’ve hurt a lot, don’t you think? And those studs in her face? Ouch.

Master 17: *grunt*

Me: (A little desperately) So. Body-piercing. You into that?

Master 17: *grunt*

Me: (And this is where I go into super-laid-back-hipster-mum mode) Yeah. Well if you do get a tattoo – don’t be a dick and get a McDonald’s receipt on your arm or something.

Master 17: *grunt & bonus eyeroll* - BUT HE LAUGHS!

Then, because I’m so thankful that the kid so far hasn’t permanently doodled anything on his body or jabbed any foreign object into his skin, we go into another store and I offer to buy him a new shirt. Nope, doesn’t want it. New pants? Nope. New jeans, pyjamas, slippers, a book? Nope. Thank goodness I didn’t have Miss 13 with me or we’d be eating instant noodles for a week – she LOVES to shop.

Maybe one day I’ll pluck up the courage to write a teenager into a book. I’d better make it fast before Miss 13 and Master 17 change yet again. That’s the thing with teens – they’re never predictable! :)

Do you have teenagers in your life? Do they talk to you? (If so, what’s the secret??) I’d love to hear from you.

Men: Top 10 Sexy Things

What do you find sexy in a man? How about a romance novel Hero?

Armani suits? A six-pack of abs? How about a bad boy straddling a Harley Davidson?

My Top-Ten:

10. A man that actually listens when a woman talks (and isn’t thinking either, ‘hmm, how can I fix her problem,’ or alternatively, ‘what the hell is her problem?’).

9. Hair that’s ready for a trim (but not Fabio long).

8. The way he walks.

7. Stubble (but not a full beard, sorry guys).

6. Dimples.

5. Tall, athletic build – pumped up body builders need not apply.

4. Confidence, but not arrogance.

3. Good teeth – and okay, I’m fussy, but some personal hygiene would be nice too.

2. Sense of humor.

1. Tight ass in faded, low slung blue jeans (hey, I’m not gonna lie!).

What’s on your Top Ten? I’d love to read them in the comments. :)

Fascination with Fairy Tales

Last night I watched one of my favorite movies, ‘Ever After’, starring Drew Barrymore. It started me thinking about why some of the movies I love the most, and enjoying watching over and over, are based on some of my childhood favorites—fairy tales. Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Rapunzel, were stories I read constantly. I’d daydream about the handsome prince, and before I moved onto chapter books (and sometimes even afterwards), I’d sigh over the gorgeous color illustrations of the character’s gowns.

But it was the heart of the story, I think, that kept me returning for more. The fight of the ordinary girl, the underdog, who captured the heart of the prince. Of course she was beautiful, but somehow she was more. She was different and she was special, and the prince couldn’t help but instantly fall in love. Not much like the reality of dating, and dealing with the stream of Mr. Wrongs. And this is where the modern take on the old fairy tales hooks me.

In ‘Enchanted’, Patrick Dempsey’s character, the cynical Robert, has to explain to the dreamy Giselle about the practicalities of ‘dating’. The movie shows us how the two fall in love – nothing instantaneous here, in fact Robert thinks Giselle is nuts to begin with. There is no perfect fairytale world for Giselle in New York city – and the twist on the helpful little forest creatures is a hoot!

In ‘Ever After’ Danielle is a girl ahead of her time, she knows her mind and has the guts to scold the Prince of France—not to mention a lethal aim with apples. And yet she wonders how the gulf between them can ever be breached—“A bird may love a fish, signore, but where will they live?” Of course there is a happy ending where the Prince declares his love: I kneel before you not as a prince, but as a man in love… But I would feel like a king if you, Danielle De Barbarac, would be my wife.

Awww. Swoon.

“Tangled” has another heroine who is both sympathetic, innocent and strong at the same time. Flynn Rider, the roguish, endearing hero, is the underdog who ends up winning the heart of the princess. There is witty banter, slapstick humor and let’s not forget Flynn’s ‘smolder’. Flynn had to suffer a few hard knocks before he discovered true love in this movie.

Isn’t this what we all love about romance? The Happily Ever After? I certainly do. :)

I’d love to hear in the comments what your favourite fairy-tale based movies and books are! :)

Cover Reveal: Summer Sky – Lisa Swallow

Book title: Summer Sky by Lisa Swallow
Series: Blue Phoenix #1
Genre: Contemporary romance
Release date: April 2014
Cover designed by Najla Qamber Designs
Models: Madison Wayne & Chad Feyrer

Sky changed her life for a man once, and she has no intention of doing it again – even if he is a six foot, tattooed rock god who makes a mean bacon sandwich.

Sky Davis is fed up of boyfriend Grant taking her for granted and when she comes home to find him wearing a girl, Sky suspects the relationship is over. She takes an unscheduled holiday and leaves the life (and guy) she hates behind.

Rock star Dylan Morgan is struggling with fame and infamy, sick of his life being controlled by other people. Dylan cuts his hair and walks away from his role as lead singer of Blue Phoenix, leaving chaos and speculation behind.

Outside the English seaside town of Broadbeach their cars and worlds collide.

Sky decides Dylan is an arrogant guy with too many tattoos, and Dylan is amused by the smart-mouthed girl with no idea who he is. Dylan and Sky soon discover they’ve travelled to Broadbeach for the same reason – to escape from reality back to a place with happy childhood memories.

Losing themselves in a world where they know nothing about each other, Sky and Dylan begin a summer romance that soon heats up their rainy English summer.

Fantasies can’t last forever and when reality crashes the party, Sky isn’t sure she wants to be more than his ‘summer Sky’ but Dylan doesn’t want to let her go.

Returning to the real world and public scrutiny isn’t their only problem. Blue Phoenix bass player, Jem Jones, has a reason for wanting Sky out of Dylan’s life, and is determined to come between them. Some things won’t stay hidden, even when they’re paid to ‘go away’.

Summer Sky is a quirky romance where occasionally more than the bacon sizzles. This is the first in the new ‘Blue Phoenix’ series of contemporary rock star romances.

Please note: this is a romance with a rock star hero, and not an erotic rock star book!

“Sky! Waves!”

I have my back to the ocean and a wave crashes against my legs, destabilising me. I regain my footing and attempt to move before the retreating water sucks my feet into the sand. At that moment a larger wave wipes me completely, dragging my body underwater. I panic at the confusion of being pushed and pulled out of my control, seawater swirling hair into my face and the bubbles rushing into my ears. The shell remains tightly gripped in my hand.

As water draws away, I push my head free. Dylan stands on the edge of the shore, water lapping his ankles, laughing. I spit out sea water and stagger to my feet. The weight of the damp hoodie threatens to pull me down again as I push hair from my eyes.

“That was fucking funny! You should see your face!” He wades towards me, arm outstretched to help.

Attempting to keep my footing, I lunge at him and slap his hard chest with both palms. “It was not! Screw you!” Dylan catches my arms as I make contact, and pulls me towards him.

Scrutinizing my face briefly, Dylan takes my cheeks in his broad palms and crushes his lips against mine. I gasp again, but it’s not the sea snatching my breath this time. A new wave sways us, and Dylan holds my face tightly, his own footing steady as his mouth claims mine. A small voice in my head asks what the hell I’m doing but I ignore it – Dylan overwhelms all common sense the moment I have any physical contact with him. Losing myself in his mint-flavoured kiss, in the slide of his cool tongue, I yield to the power he holds over me. Dylan curls his fingers into my wet hair and pulls me closer; I respond with a deep kiss, tracing fingers across his stubbled cheek.

Fierce or gentle, his kisses mould my soul to his as perfectly as his body shapes with mine, as if we’re in a place created by our coming together. Kissing Dylan last night pulled me into his orbit, and when I see stars again, I swear his kisses will always take me to the edge of his galaxy. If Dylan can remove me from reality with just this, god knows what anything else he’s skilful at would do to me. The thought of us skin on skin, united through more than a kiss, lights a fire deep inside that would take more than the cold Cornish sea to extinguish.

Dylan loosens his grip on my hair and slides his hands across my damp back. He closes the final gap between us as our bodies meet, and I wish the rain-soaked clothes weren’t in the way. “I have never met anyone so…” He grasps for a word then gives up and rests his forehead on mine. “I feel as if I’ve waited my whole life to meet you and then suddenly you’re here.”

For a moment I consider whether he’s teasing me again, but I guess I’m very different to the people in his real life. “I can honestly say I’ve never met anyone like you, Dylan Morgan.”

He wipes water from my cheek with cool, damp fingers. “No-one’s met Dylan Morgan apart from you. Not for a lot of years, anyway.”

I stare at the truth reflected in his pale blue eyes, unable to believe any of this is reality. His grip on my back loosens, and I step back. Rain drips down his face, soaking through his T-shirt and clinging to his body in a way that does nothing to help my mounting desire to get my hands on him.

A subject change is needed rapidly, before I begin drooling.
