Poems A Tough Fit
Poetry, the most precise and precious of literary forms, is also so far the least adaptable to the growing e-book market. A three-line stanza might be expanded to four if a line is too long or a four-line stanza compressed into three if the second and fourth lines have sharp indentations, as with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Hymn to the Night."Royalty disputes, philosophical objections and

Slush Pile
Talk about earning a bad name for yourself. "Slush pile" is loaded with numerous shady insinuations. From the Post's first deployment of "slush pile" to Van Loan's unethical reporter and ship slush emerges the foul and mercenary undertones that resonate into our modern use of "slush pile." One does often associate slush piles with the trash bin. Is that where J.H. Seward & Co.'s rotten sawdust

When you look at the speaking roles in all animated films that one out of three are going to be girls or women. If you look at just the acceptance of sexism in the media,

An obvious better alternative
It seems like editors at big fancy lit mags (BFLMs) don't know what to do with all their submissions. Look, I read for a BFLM (Ploughshares) for many years, I know the sheer onslaught of mediocre to lousy or even good submissions is pretty tiresome. But there's a really easy way to limit the number of submissions you receive and ease the burden on readers: Just close submissions for most of the

Aries - Week of July 8
Have you added some bulk and stability to your foundation any time recently, Aries? Have you grown your roots deeper and asked for more from your traditional sources and recommitted yourself to your primal vows? I hope so, because this is a perfect time, astrologically speaking, to strengthen your link to everything that sustains you. You have a sacred duty to push harder for access to the stuff
