A New Interview - Our Write Side, by Stephanie Ayers

http://ourwriteside.com/interview-mar...

Interview: Mary Woldering

Mary R. Woldering is an author, artisan and art historian, devoted wife to Dr. Jackie Woldering, mother of two and grandmother of three. She lives in Euclid, OH.

Mary Woldering

Name: Mary R. Woldering

Latest Release: Children of Stone (Book 2) Going Forth By Day

Genre: Historical Fantasy

We are delighted to share our exclusive interview with historical fantasy author, Mary Woldering.

How long have you been writing?

About the time I could write a sentence on paper. Poetry was first. Novels began at about age 14

What kind(s) of writing do you do?

Some poetry, but mostly novels. The genre is Historical Fantasy.

Why did you choose that particular field or genre?

It chose me. I have always looked at period in history and thought about “What if?” or found the offbeat stories and myths more interesting than the standard tales.

What inspires you?

My dreams and meditations inspire me. Life and people’s journey through life has always fascinated me. I am a chronicler of dreams.

Where did your love of books/storytelling/reading/writing, etc. come from?

I can’t think of a specific place. I always loved adventure stories and theater. When I was older I discovered my father was a writer of mostly scientific articles. He self-published a few copies of a fiction series.

How do you find or make time to write?

I try to write every day. I can do more of it now that I am retired.

Do you write more by logic or intuition, or some combination of the two? Summarize your writing

process.

I write by intuition exclusively. There was a standing joke about me being all right brain and the antithesis of logic. I agree with that assessment.

How did you get to be where you are in your life today?

I lived and experienced life.

Children of StoneWhat projects are you working on at the moment?

Book 3 of my Children of Stone Series Opener of the Sky and a short story spin-off in the Steampunk genre that features two characters from the novels.

What process did you go through to get your work published?

Many years ago I tried traditional publishing but never sold a manuscript. In 2012 I discovered Indie Publishing and the following year published my first of the Children of Stone Series.

What is the hardest part of writing for you?

The mechanics and the revision are hard…Marketing is worse.

What do you enjoy most about writing? Share your favorite work.

Telling a good story with characters people can actually care about. My ONLY work so far is the Children of Stone Series…so yes that one.

What is the biggest thing people THINK they know about your subject/genre, that isn’t true?

I have no idea what they think about the genre. As my stories deal with unconventional concepts of mythology and ancient history/culture/religion, some might find it hard to understand or might disagree with the worlds I build.

What is the most important thing that people DON’T know about your subject/genre, that they

should?

That it can include the paranormal, sci-fi, romance, and epic… It takes real history and actual historical figures and re-casts them in fantasy. So far, no actual person has risen from the grave to bother me about my depiction of them…yet.

For those interested in exploring the subject/theme of your work, where should they start?

Study history, art and culture. Look at what exists from the literature of the day.

What are some ways in which you promote your writing? Do you find that these add or detract

from your writing time?

Marketing ALWAYS cuts into my writing time. I wish I had the money to pay other people to do it. I try anything that isn’t illegal, immoral or fattening.

Child Stone17. Who are some of your favorite authors?

Robert E. Howard, Evangeline Walton, Joseph Campbell, Herman Melville. I love adventure, personal journey, mythology and legends.

What makes your writing stand out from the crowd?

I have been told my writing is “very deep” and mystical; that it makes you think. I’ve been told that my characters are very, very real and that people care what happens to them.

What are you currently reading?

The Lost Princess of Mona – Guy Donovan

What do you think is the future of reading/writing?

As long as there are stories to be told…

Thank you for taking time to answer our questions.

A new Book 2 review! 5 stars

Best thing about Friday the 13th for me was waking up on the 14th to a warm and windy rain, coffee and a 5 star review for my second book (Going Forth By Day - I only had 2 reviews for total til today) Thanks Wendy. Book 3 (Opener of the Sky) will be available soon as my son can finish formatting it.

Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Great continuation of the 'Children of Stone'. Can't wait to read Book 3. Sorry that it took me so long to decide to read Book 2 as it was a good read. Interesting to see how the female characters developed.

Haven't picked it up yet? Here's the link.Going Forth By DayMary R. Woldering

A 5 star review

A Historical Fantasy set in the Ancient Near East!
By Reed James on April 20, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
In the 2500s BC, two men of drastically different background, separated by culture and geography, are linked by one event. The arrival of the Children of the Stone. Marai, a Semetic shepherd living in the shadow of Mount Sinai, prays to the Goddess Inanna like he has done every night since the death of his wife in childbirth many years ago. To the west, the the Land of Kemet (Ancient Egypt), Hordjedtef, one of the sons of Pharaoh Khufu (the guy who was buried in the Great Pyramid at Giza) studies with a wise priest, his bid to become the next Pharaoh failed.

Falling from another world, the consciousness of powerful beings arrive to the bronze age Middle East. Though Hordjedtef and his master sense the arrival of the Children, they are not the ones chosen to bear their knowledge. That falls to humble Marai. Called out of his prayers, Marai finds the fallen rock. When he enters it, he will never be the same.

Marai is charged to bring the knowledge to Hordjedtef by the Children. But will Hordjedtef respect the power or will he crave it for himself. Marai, joined by three women each broken in their own way, travels west to Kemet where he hopes he will find his destiny.

Voices in Crystal is a Historical Fantasy. It is set in our world, amid the mythology of the Akkadians, Sumerians, and Ancient Egyptians but with real, supernatural powers. It is well researched, illuminating the often harsh way of life of the bronze age near east along with the esoteric splendor that Kemet (Egypt) achieved. Though the novel took me a while to read (I kept being distracted by other books) the tale of Marai and the three women called me back over and over.

I greatly enjoyed the book, and while it has flaws, it kept me reading to the end, eager to find out more. And the ending left had me on the edge of my seat. I will definitely read book 2. If you're a fan of mythology, Ancient Egypt, the bronze age, the mystery religions, or looking for a different story then what gluts the fantasy and historical markets, pick up Voice in Crystal.

JANUARY 24, 2016 WILL THE REAL JEDI PLEASE STEP UP

Mary R. Woldering One of the great providers for a background story for Children of Stone is a tale from the 4th dynasty called Khufu and the Magician. It was already written down by the 14th dynasty and likely written much earlier. It had two characters: Djedi or Dedi (or Jedi) a short and heavyset old wizard aged 110 and Hardaduf or Dedephor (which I then spelled Hordjedtef) as a young prince trying to impress his father King Khufu with the great knowledge of the ancient man. (This was so the king would favor him) This magician could cut the head of a goose off, then reattach it. The goose would live. The king tells his young son to get the man and bring him to the court to demonstrate this. After the trick with the goose, the king asks the old wizard to cut the head off of a prisoner and re-attach it but he won't. For his wisdom and mercy the old magician is given a fat pension and a place to live in the prince's house for the rest of his days.

In Voices in Crystal I show the elder teaching the prince as his heir of knowledge. Together they collect artifacts of the gods that may have come from other worlds and store them for future use. One night they see a certain falling star... (the same one Marai sees from his cave several hundred miles away)

In so many ways I wonder if that elder master/younger noble template played through history... certainly it did in Star Wars in the form of Yoda who teaches young Luke.
The Jedi (or should I say Djedi) tradition

Below is an illustration I found of the prince taking old Djedi to his boat so he can show the king his magic

ON CHANNELING - or whatever the heck that was

Children of Stone: Voices in CrystalGoing Forth By DayIN 1970 It started as a past life regression. I had become friends with a girl named Marilyn (current name/status unknown) She was a "genetic witch" which meant the women in her family all practiced.
I would lie in a darkened room and visualize the number 10 at my third eye. I would breathe slowly and relax until I saw it. Then I would visualize the number 9, becoming more relaxed. It was always guided. At the number one I would visualize a door and walk through it. First I would see things that happened in my child hood. Then I was in a room on Pearl Harbor day, lonely old lady coughing up bad lungs. Another jump and I was a Regency Buck fond of women & the British Navy. Something decadent in the days of restoration, a gay sculptor in Spanish Mexico on the run from the Inquisition and further back to medieval, Celtic twice as a wise woman and earlier as a male warrior, a Roman seeress, Aegean mystic, and a certain Egypt/canaanite thief...then fantastic places that weren't even on earth. Mars? Other Dimensions? I didn't know. My friends Buddy & Annette took Marilyn's place changing who controlled and who was regressed. Many times I would channel other spirits and so would Annette. We drew pictures. A regular was Raemkai for a while (Yes he ended up in my story)...and other guides who would rather not be named on this page...
I can't prove to you that it was a past life, a co-life, time travel remote viewing or any and all of that.
I really just consider myself so fortunate to have had those friends and these experiences for 8+ years.
It's a place I can't get to any more because of all that living I've done in the here and now.
A view through the doors of perception - and the gift to write about it...hoping you'll read and enjoy what I wrote about the Ancient World life based on these notes in Children of Stone

Werewolves - the origin.

SO... WEREWOLVES Where wolves? Most of us think of the wolf shifter as something Rom, Celtic, Native American or Germanic - at least in the stories I've read. An even earlier tradition dates back to Greece and Rome...before that, Egypt.
Most of us have heard of Anubis, the God of the Dead who is half jackal and half human
(If you wanted to portray a shifter in art, how else would you do it?) Many scholars now think this "jackal" may have actually been a smaller, black wolf-dog. An even earlier tradition shows Anubis or Anpu as a "Guide of Souls" linking him to the earlier more wolfish form of Wepwawet who was the "Opener of the Way" being the Way to Eternal Life -- hence death.
A person could become a werewolf by having been bitten.
Priests in his cult were known to "shift" on Lunar festivals.
The Greeks who conquered Egypt renamed his cult city Lycopolis "City of the Wolf"
It's one of the reason I built a character on him...clip posted earlier
But don't take my word for it. Here is a link
