Stop and Smell the Baked Goods

I could shamelessly plug my upcoming book, and don't worry, I will. But first I'd like to address the last seven weeks of the year 2013.
Every year, the so-called "holiday season" seems to grow in days. I remember, a long, long time ago in a faraway time known as the seventies; we didn't begin to celebrate the "holidays" until after Thanksgiving. Black Friday was merely a term of mourning if your NFL football team was the Detroit Lions and they lost on Thanksgiving Day, or KU's grid failed as a result of too many people putting up their Christmas lights.
Now, people are skipping the fellowship of being together and giving thanks (not to mention the turkey and dressing) in order to be first in line at Best Buy in order to purchase a discount flat screen that will further their quest never to interact with a live human or use their imagination. Ever. Again.
In fact, retailers have moved the "holidays" so far back, you can Christmas and Back-to-School shop all at the same time in August - which makes sense due to the Christmas in July sales coming to a close.
I'm all for a strong economy folks, but with all this commercialism, I worry that we've lost our humanity. And that's the one thing we should be celebrating these last few weeks.
So here's my advice, for what it's worth: In the next seven weeks, stop and smell the baked goods. One of the best parts of November and December is the food. I'm not saying to throw off the bowlines of your current diet and exercise plan. In fact, exercise will help you cope these last few weeks. What I am saying is don't make war these last few weeks, make cookies.
You don't have to eat all your yummy creations either. In fact, goodies are always better if you share them with others. And guess what? You'll have a chance to interact with a real live human due to the fact you can't email, text, Tweet, Vine, Instagram or Facebook your baked goods to your friends.
As we wind down the year 2013, it’s time to celebrate our love for one another and our accomplishments. So spread a little love, spread a little joy and spread a little sugar. Preferably on a cookie.
P.S. buy my new book, Sex, Lies & Sweet Tea, out this month. You can read it while you snack on a cookie or while you wait in line at Best Buy.
