Art Unboxed Art Supplies

The idea for Art Unboxed began as a different play on art unboxing. While I love getting new supplies, I wanted this to be less about that, and more about ‘unboxing’ or reexamining art techniques we already have. I believe your greatest art supplies are the experience you have when drawing or painting. Please note that I didn’t say skills or talent, those come in time, but the experience brings the enjoyment, increases the skills, and helps talent to grow

I mentioned in the last post that my wife bought me a heat gun for my watercolors, and how it has added to my watercolor journey. Today I’d like to elaborate, not on the heat gun, but the technique of the wet on wet watercolor method. Until recently I have to admit, it was not where I was in any way comfortable.

This is not to say I don’t care for it, because my favorite Watercolor Artist is Joseph Zbukvic. I have seen him transform scenes with this technique, and it’s mind boggling. I also love Alvaro Castagnet, Steve Mitchell, and Eric Yi Lin, who have a looser style.

However, since I’ve been using the heat gun, it’s allowed me to have more control on my wet on wet washes. Recently, I did a watercolor of King Oscar II of Sweden based on an oil painting. It was far wetter than I was previously comfortable with, but the ability to dry layers allowed me to add more detail.

As the happy and proud parent of a toddler, time is an issue that comes up. The heat gun allows me the benefit of time, which allows me to learn more. It’s amazing to me how adding water before adding pigment, directs the flow of water.

It not only directs where the water and pigment flow to, more importantly where they do not go. This allows me to not have to correct finished areas that I’ve done previously. For this painting both the wet on wet technique, and the flow of water made a huge difference in completing it.

As always, there are areas I would change or redo if I could, but I was happy that I was able to produce a finished painting. It encouraged me to keep going, and to try some additional things that same day I would not normally have. When you unbox a new idea, or an old idea that’s new to you, it can definitely add a new dimension to your artwork.

Watercolor Cheer Deer

#WorldWatercolorMonth #Cheer #Deer

For today’s prompt I went with a Dad joke/rhyme. One day a happy deer jumped over a log, and gave a cheer, lol.
