iPainting Stocked Up For Winter

In Nashville, the snow is fleeting, but somewhere a family is stocked up for winter in a little cabin with a wonderful blanket of snow falling outside.

Sketch J R R Tolkien

He’s famous for The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings, but my favorite story about J. R. R. Tolkien is his friendship with C. S. Lewis. It was Lewis who helped him with an impass with a certain Hobbit. Friendship is one of God’s great gifts, and like Tolkien I treasure mine more precious than, well you know.
iPainting Snowlake Cabin

In honor of the snow that fell in Nashville, I did this iPainting in the style of the Russian Artists. There is a verse about God having snow in His treasuries, it’s truly a rich and beautiful world with all of God’s amazing treasures, including a winter wonderland. I hope you enjoy Snowlake Cabin.

Sketch Tai Shan Schierenberg

I enjoy watching Sky Arts Landscape and Portrait Artist Of The Year programs. Here is a ink sketch of one of the judges, Tai Shan Schierenberg. It fascinates me how many artists can see the same scene, and paint so many different variations. It’s a reminder that God makes masterpieces, for we only copy what He created.
January 3 – On This Date

On this date, Washington won the Battle Of Princeton, construction began on the Brooklyn Bridge, and Apple Computers is incorporated. Each event overcame obstacles to accomplish something incredible. A battle, a bridge, and new opportunities, what a wonderful way to begin a work week.

Art Unboxed Angles

In this first Art Unboxed post of the year, and our first post of 2022, I would like to talk about angles. The simple pencil sketch above is just that, very simple, except for the angle. The angle of the Ship’s Purser walking along the deck of the ship is interesting because of the composition of the picture.
It’s not that I was being very creative, it’s from a photograph of the same angle, but that’s what Art Unboxed is about. Looking at, and incorporating existing tools or techniques, in a different way. First, let’s talk about the looking.
Looking can either be, looking at something a new way, or looking without preconceived ideas. Let’s pretend you were about to paint a portrait. No doubt, from the time you see the subject, and idea forms as to the composition. Purposely rejecting the angel that comes to mind, and doing something unusual, will breathe new life into your composition.
One way of looking at things in a new way is to frame a scene at a different angle. For example, if you have a rectangular view finder, and you look at a picture in portrait or landscape, try turning the view finder ten degrees. One little change can transform your art project.
Another method of using angles is to design the composition in a way that causes the viewer to look at the picture differently. For example, a keyhole view in a painting. For example, you can have a painting of someone in a building, looking through the door. The keyhole view would show a glimpse of what was happening outside the open door.
Changing angles, will develop your compositional eye, and help you become habitual about changing your projects in some way. This can be an additional safeguard to falling into a pattern or rut, that would lead to burn out. Playing an angle in your painting, can help you to come out a winner with every design.

iPainting Violin In The Spotlight

Looking at this violin in the spotlight. My mind goes back to December 31, 2019, mostly because we had no idea what the next two years would hold. Really and truly, we never know what to expect might happen tomorrow. However this past two years that knowledge really hit home for all of us.
What does the picture have to do with the unexpected? Simply this, in a concert, the audience doesn’t know what the violinist will play, and the musician doesn’t know how the they will react to it. What both expect however, is for the violinist to have practiced, and the instrument to be in tune. There’s a lot we can’t predict going into next year, but with God’s help we can be ready for whatever we face.

iPainting Fox Sleeping In Snow

I hope everyone has a peaceful and restful Thursday and New Year’s weekend as we wrap up 2021.
iPainting Armstrong And Crosby

For the day before New Year’s Eve, I thought this iPainting of two of my favorites was appropriate. It’s Mr. Louis Armstrong and Mr. Bing Crosby, taken from the film Now You Has Jazz from 1956.
